Title: THE SUPERFLUOUS "P"
Post by: bk on February 22, 2012, 12:05:51 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were superfluous and contained the letter "P", and now it is time for you to post until the superfluous cows come home.

Good morning, all! The ghost struck again last night. Around 5:45 this morning, I awoke to find the computer on. That really creeps me out.

Today is my tax date with my accountant; I hope it goes well. I suspect I will end up owing both State and IRS money, so I'll be happy to take care of this before March. It's hard enough putting the estimated taxes together by April 15.

When that's over, I will walk down to 16th Street and pick up from Anthony the work he's done for me. give him a check and head back uptown. Until I get some more of DEAREST ENEMY to proof, my day will be spent on ROBERTA.

Speaking of Ghosts in the Machine:  my smartphone has gone completely wonky.  Believe it or not, it managed to "Buy it Now" on eBay for an item I had bookmarked (I've PMd the seller, begging for forgiveness), and it also "called" Betsy's work voicemail,  despite being supposedly "locked," which should have made "dialing" impossible.  I called Verizon and was on the (landline) phone for an hour yesterday trying to figure out what's going on.  They haven't a clew.

We watched J. EDGAR last night.

Great performances.  Fantastic production values.

But, there's no emotional involvement, since none of the characters are sympathetic.  The film is more "interesting" than "entertaining".  I almost felt like I was watching a documentary.

This is a story that should probably have been done as a TV mini-series.  The script tries to cover too much material in too short of a time.

Found this mini review of Melody Hollis cd

Melody Hollis - Welcome to Melodyland (Kritzerland)
13-year-old Hollis -- seen on Broadway in White Christmas and in title role in Annie in L.A. opposite Andrea McArdle -- displays an impressive set of pipes on this recording, taped live during a West Coast cabaret appearance. Hollis' wide-ranging choices include "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid, a medley of songs by the Sherman Brothers, and Mary Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim's "Boy From…" (from The Mad Show), all of which display her ability to belt out a tune, But the real stunner on the album is "Children Will Listen" (from Into the Woods).

And one for INSIDE OUT

Inside Out (Original Off Broadway Cast Album) (Kritzerland)
This cast recording of the 1996 Off-Broadway show about the members of a women's therapy group and their leader has been out of print for a while, which has been a pity, because it features some wittily conceived and executed songs from Adryan Russ and Doug Haverty that brim with pop appeal. Adding to the luster of the album is the show's top-notch cast, which includes the likes of Ann Crumb, Harriet D. Foy, Jan Maxwell, and Cass Morgan.

I see the musical NEWSIES is going to Broadway for a stricty limited run 101 performances.

I think this is BS.

IMHO if the show get reviews there is no way they are going to let it run 101 perfomances especially when it can be nominated for Tony Awards

Elmore's CD was also reviewed in that batch Michael S. quoted earlier, even if his name weren't mentioned:

Victor Herbert: Works for Cello and Piano/Solo Piano Works (New World Records)
Simple "parlor" pieces -- works that were intended for ordinary people to play at home -- are the welcome focus of this two-disc set, which brings 26 absolutely beguiling works by the man behind such operettas as Babes in Toyland and Naughty Marietta into the 21st Century. Pianist William Hicks and cellist Jerry Grossman bring Herbert's graceful and elegant melodies to life with finesse, making them almost impossible to resist. Particularly enticing are "The Little Red Lark," a duet which has echoes of the "Old South" in it, and the whimsical piano solo "Scherzo."

I have never seen Downton Abbey either.  Is Downton a family name in the show, or what is the use of Downton in the title.  The first year the show was on PBS, I assume that Spellcheck kept going in and correcting the title on different TV listings.

If I have one minor gripe about DOWNTON ABBEY, it's that the characters are showing no signs of aging.  Seven years have gone by, and no one looks a day older.  Maybe there's something in the waters in that part of Merry Ol'?

Neither have The Simpsons!!

I'm awake, at school, and I haven't read the notes yet.   Still haven't heard about the shipping of my blasted eBay item.  Needless to say, trying to work on my attitude towards stupid people during this Lenten season, it's not starting well on this Ash Wednesday.
I've never given up humanity for Lent. That's certainly different.

I have, sometimes, given up Catholicism for Lent.  But, of course, I am Methodist.

My "noodling" at mass this morning sounded a lot like "Lament" from "Evita" and the theme from
"Downton Abbey"

I guess what I am asking is if the last name of most of the characters is Crawley, why don't they live in Crawley Abbey?  Or if they are the Earl and Countess of Grantham, why don't they live in Grantham Abbey?  I am just asking!

TOD:

BK, when you were producing the Terry Trotter series of jazz recordings, how did you approach the material? Strictly in terms of music? Or were the song lyrics ever used to determine an approach, even though the lyric wasn't used? In other words, when it came to a song like "Being Alive" from "Company," would the dramatic nature of the lyric affect the way it was played?

DR John G, where did you find this review? I can't find any source information from the reviews for the other CDs.

I found it OK, but too talky and technical for its own good.

Loved the script and the performances.

I talk about this in the book, but only about the first of them, Passion.  Terry always took the music and came up with his approaches, most of which were fine.  When something didn't grab me, then the two of us would talk about it and I'd suggest a different approach or feel, and he'd try that and we'd find something that worked for both of us.

This morning I finished reading THE NIGHT CIRCUS.  All told, it was a disappointing book.  While I enjoyed the author's imagery, her characters were rather dull and her story was just as unexciting.

While I'm glad I read it it didn't turn out to be the incredible book I expected.

And congrats to BK, Adrian, Doug and Cast of Inside Out!

So, I go to the place, it lists the series, I go to the page and the episode  is listed:  Season 3; Episode 35, WARRIOR PRIDE.  When I click on either "Watch Now" or "Download" it tells me I have to download this viewing site called Graboid Video.  I did that, opened it, and it tells me that it has no such program as HIGH SCHOOL STORIES.

There is also another button that says "Stream This Now"  Every time I click on that button it takes me to a site, but each time I go there, the name of the Streaming company is something different.

I am very confused.

The reason is, that episode is not uploaded to the site yet, it's simply listed in the "available" (as in they know about it) episodes.  It looks like the only one you can actually watch is that single one separated and listed below.

First day back at work was a mixed event. I did get tired, but I made it through OK. I also discovered where the massages are offered and have one set for Friday.

Did you work a full day today, or did you work just a few hours?
I worked a full day. Just took a little nap before the final episode of "Top Chef" starts.

Sorry, Doug R, George and those non "Downton" watchers, but this one is fun. Broadway.com suggests casting for  "Downton" the musical, should there ever be one:

I'd love to see that! ;D

And on that note (D-natural), I'm off.

Be back later.

Watched two episodes of Downton Abbey, which leaves two more and the Christmas special.  A couple of the attempts to keep drama going on a couple of story lines  is starting to be just a little irritating, especially the evil wife of Bates (just let them be happy already - enough) and the endless stuff with O'Brien and Thomas.
