Title: FATHER'S DAY
Post by: bk on June 20, 2004, 12:04:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, all you mothers out there in the dark can just get off your high horse for a moment and celebrate all us fathers out there, just as we fathers celebrated all you mothers on Mother's Day.  And how best to celebrate?  A plethora of posts, that's how.

I had a turkey sausage with salad for dinner. Heated up the sausage in a frying pan --- and my entire abode now smells of sausage - even my pillow. It's a tad disgusting.

I am almost afraid to ask when you celebrate Christmas, DR Tomovoz?

Coconut cream pie pillows, spaghetti and meatballs pillows, eggs benedict pillows (what a way to wake up in the morning) - I love my Scent of Pillows.  I'm hungry now.

And what, may I ask, is Summer Solstice?

Forgive me for being absent for most of yesterday, but it was just too darn hot around these here parts.  As promised, I did have Chinese food for lunch today with some good friends.  I then came home, laid on the bed, watched my Mariners, napped (frequently) and watched various and sundried movies and television reruns.  I watched a couple of episodes of LAW AND ORDER: THE SVU, in order to get my Christopher Melloni fix.  I then watched THE MUMMY to get my Brendan Fraser fix.  Do you see a pattern developing here?

I finally ended the evening by switching to CBC and catching most (but not all) of SPARTACUS.  Although this was the fully-restored version, I arrived too late to catch the Tony Curtis / Laurence Olivier bath scene, but I am sure that I can live out the rest of my life quite comfortably without having witnessing that.  What I did find fascinating about the film, besides the performances of Kirk, Tony and Jean, was the sheer brilliance of Charles Laughton.  Over the years there have been so many impressions, so many jokes, that I had somehow forgotten the incredible talent of the man. He was indeed a genius.

Favorite Laughton roles anyone?

Love Charles Laughton and only wish he'd been alive when I became friends with Elsa L.  Love him in Witness for the Prosecution, in which he delivers a brilliant performance.  He's one of the highlights of Spartacus, too.

Ismail Merchant, while reclining on a Viktor Benes Parisian Cake scented pillow, concludes his article about what has happened to movies today with:

I believe we have entered a new Dark Age, a barbarous age dominated by greed and profit, by the mentality of lottery riches and cheap celebrity. The culture that once civilized us has been dramatically eroded over the past five decades, and soon it will cease to have any meaning because there will be no one able to appreciate or even understand it.

Those who value the artistic and literary achievements of the past, who have been enlightened and inspired by the genius of generations, are now in the minority. It is time for the minority to speak: to defy political correctness, to put politicians in the dock, to attack those in positions of responsibility who have failed to fulfill their duties and obligations.

Bravo, Izzy!

Re TCB's Laughton question, then I should really try to get to my sausage bed...
Lots of favorite Laughton performances...
O'HENRY'S FULL HOUSE - which I haven't seen in the proverbial coon's age and would love to view again.
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
bk has already mentioned WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION
(I'm embarrassed to admit I've never seen THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII)
Title: Re:FATHER'S DAY
Post by: TCB on June 20, 2004, 01:15:53 AM
I suppose I should answer my own question.  Prior to today, I probably would have said WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, or even ADVISE AND CONSENT, but after watching it again, I would have to go with Laughton's performance in SPARTACUS. Damn, I wish I could be that good.

This isn't as far-fetched as my fellow DRs may think!

For example, buckwheat is used to fill pillows, which stay cool and conform to the head that rests on them.

Various seeds and spices are used in sausages.

Why not, then, use seeds other than buckwheat?  Fennel, for example, has a wonderful smell.  So does caraway.  I can easily imagine any number of seeds being used, perhaps in combination, to create a fragrant pillow upon which to rest one's head.

And if you ever get tired of the smell, you can eat your pillow!  (But, probably not if you're on the Atkins plan.)

I am shamed to admit I have never watched the film Spartacus.  We have it on DVD, but I have not yet taken the time to watch it.

For that matter, although we also have them on DVD, I have not wached the first two Godfather films.

Am I alone in this guilty pattern?

The sun will be up soon here in Rehoboth.  The sky is baby blue dappled with pink clouds.

I need to go back to sleep.  G'night.

Wow, so many posts to read through from Saturday!

It is now 4:30 in the a.m. Just got home from my wild Saturday and I am beat! I wasn't  tired when I got home at first but now that I have sat down I am getting sleepy!

Panni, I am familiar with the word serviette as it was used a few times in the old Three Stooges shorts from the 1930s...but I can't recall anyone in the real world ever using the word.

Lovely new avatars of the DRs!

DR Robin, I agree that Momoko Kochi was a fantastic actress! I have always adored her, particularly in Gojira. She was good on The Mysterians as well and she pops up in one of the more recent Godzilla films...can't recall which one just now. She passed away a couple of years ago of, I think, stomach cancer.

JRand53, that was a cool picture of the Guy Haines Fan club and I remember those days well...golly we were a swell looking bunch back then!

OK, must get to bed. I am beat and spent. Who knows when I will awaken! But see you all in a few hours!

My favorite Charles Laughton performance is barely contained in the movie Island of Lost Souls, based on HG Wells' novel The Island of Dr. Moreau.  It's also one of the best horror movies ever made.

He's also great in Sign of the Cross.

Happy Father's day to all the HHW fathers.

Re: last night's Trading Spaces

Which episode were you guys watching?  The new 9pm episode had Edward and Frank.  And it was quite interesting because Edward's team changed his entire design.

What did the final rooms with Hildy look like?

And btw, I am a HUGE Hildy fan.  I think she'f fantastic.

Yes, she does a few that I am not crazy about (the records on the walls, the feathers, the cardboard furniture).  But when she's not being crazy, she is an amazing designer.  And I'd love to have her work on my house.

Besides Vern (who is gone) and Laurie, Hildy is my favorite!

I have just finished mowing the grass, and I'm burning up. I wanted to get it done before the temperature got too hellish hot, but even at 78, it was too hot to be outside doing YARD work. Ugh!

Absolutely adore Charles Laughton who could do more with the flicker of an eye than most actors do with their entire bodies AND voices. In addition to the movies already mentioned, I also like him in things like THE BIG CLOCK, IT STARTED WITH EVE, THE PARADINE CASE, HOBSON'S CHOICE (simply magnificent). He also reprised his Henry VIII in YOUNG BESS and stole the film from everyone else in his few scenes.

And need we mention his masterpiece of direction in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER?

The man was underappreciated during his lifetime. One of the most poignant things I read in one of the first biographies of him was that as he was dying and drifting in and out of consciousness, he was convinced he was nominated for an Oscar for ADVISE AND CONSCENT (he should have been). Going to your death thinking about an Oscar; obviously he craved acceptance of his peers more and more as he grew older.

In honor of Father's Day, I was going to watch the Spencer Tracy FATHER OF THE BRIDE but realized I don't have it on DVD yet. All I have is a videotape copied of TCM several years ago on a faulty VCR where the image jumps around and is unacceptable. I know what I'll be ordering today.

Good Morning!  (again)

Well, it is absolutely effing gorgeous right now in Richmond, VA!  I just got back from brunch at Sidewalk - and with Edwina - and I'm just trying to decide what to do with my afternoon.  A walk is indeed in order, but it's just a question of where.  Maybe I'll finally explore the "ri-vah" today, or just take my good ole Carytown walk.  *If I go the Carytown route, I can also pick up some french pastries at Jean-Jacques for my afternoon snack. ;)  Or I could get in my car, head out west and go shopping!  Hmm...

-I do want to head up to school and get some practicing in today too... And, hopefully, find my missing music back on the piano.  But if they're not back... Hmm...  -And the walk up to school is a good mile too, so that'll help "even out" the big omelet I had at brunch.

DR Jennifer - Hildy did a "gumball inspired" room last night on the 10:00 show.  I thought it was a new episode; if it wasn't, it was new to me.  It was the one with the wrapping paper on the walls and the paint cans on the ceiling.  -Yes, that's what I said.  So...  My head is still a little cloudy right now, but I think Hildy was on both the 9:00 and 10:00 episodes last night.  ...Or maybe not...  In any case, it was the "gumball room".  *Oh, but the homeowners liked it.  -I'll have to check the website for any follow-up.  **OH!  Are you in a different time zone?  Could "my" 10:00 episode, been your 9:00 episode?  -Thus, the possible confusion.

DR MBarnum - Remember, we want details... and pictures!!!  Especially of the "nakey beach".  Or feel free to post more random pics of your studly, hunky self.  ;D

And since it's Free-for-All Day:

Does anyone have an aversion - or at least an uncomfortable reaction - to the word "moist"?

I'm only asking since I seem to be coming across people - mainly actor types - who really seem to not like that word no matter what the connotation, if any.  There was even an un-official moratorium on the word, "moist", during the Children of Eden rehearsals.

-Just wunderin'...

To Whom it May Concern:

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

If you are the desert, I'll be the sea
If you ever hunger - hunger for me
Whatever you ask for, that's what I'll be

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling, don't think of me

Because all I ever wanted
It's in your eyes baby, baby
And love can't lie, no...
(Greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always telling me so
(Heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won't let you go, my baby

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
So I am gonna love you
Until the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I'll be your daddy
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

I am on the East Coast.  The 9pm episode is always the new one (and last night it was Edward and Frank, no Hildy).

The Hildy gumball room was a repeat, although I cannot rememeber exactly what it looked like.  I do however remember the paint cans on the ceiling. :)

Sometimes I wonder if Hildy just wants to be Hildy when she does those crazy rooms.  I mean everyone expects them.  So she probably gets some joy out of trying crazy new things.

Also, because she is occasionally crazy, whenever she does a great room, the home owners act shocked.  Even though if you think about it she probably does 5 great rooms for every crazy one! :)

I worked for a company called WAMSUTTA. We manufactured Sheets,Pillowcases,Comforters etc.

At a Sales Meeting, we kiddingly commented on the fact that almost everything that was on the Menu in Restaurants were Stuffed with Crabmeat.

We decided to stuff our Comforters with Crabmeat.

Well we celebrated Father's Day already.  We had blueberry pancakes.  We ended up giving my dad some Arnold Palmer clothes.  He loves Arnold Palmer clothes (because everything has the appropriate pockets).  I wasn't sure if he was going to want to keep the stuff.  But he seemed happy.  So he got Arnold Palmer jean shorts and an Arnold Palmer jersey/shirt.

My favorite part was when he thanked my sister's hubby (who had never seen said clothes).  Hmmm, come to think of it my sis didn't see them either. :)

This one's for Panni and tomovoz:

Two kangaroo shooters, way out the back of Bourke. Their ute breaks down. They do the right thing – stay with it. But no one comes along. So they decide to walk out. The temperature is 40 plus C. After 2 days, they’re on their last drop of radiator water when they climb a rise and find, nailed to a tree, a sign saying MERCY, POPULATION 12. In the distance, a collection of ramshackle tin huts. They arrive. One hut is identified as a café. They enter. A lady appears, very proper. “Yis”, she says.

“Bring us a drink, luv. Make it long and quick.”

“We only serve one thing here.”

“What’s that?”

“Koala tea.”

“Well, bring it luv, only make it quick!”

She brings it, and she is not kidding. Pathetic little paws grip the edge of the billy and little furry ears poke through the murky surface. Well, kangaroo shooters are pretty tough but they’re not this tough. They look at each other and beg the woman to “take it away please, and strain it.”

“What?” she says, “The Koala Tea of Mercy is not strained.”

. .and since there IS NO GROANING on HHW:

There is a traditional sport in Ireland, called "Cliff Shoving". It involves a small local rodent called a rarie (which is similar to a lemming) being pushed off a cliff.
The aim of the game is to see who can get the poor animal to go over the edge with the least amount of effort.
Of course, these days people aren't so keen on blood sports, and the animal rights people wouldn't like it either, so it's changed from a cliff into a small shallow pit that the rodents are pushed into.
This in turn has made it much easier to get the animals to jump, to the point where, with a properly trained rarie, it takes barely a touch to get it into the pit.
The sport is mostly based only in Ireland, but they do get the occasional overseas competitor. Recently, they had a fellow come all the way from Australia to take part.
During a break, he mentioned that he'd had a eighteen hour journey to get there.
"But I guess I always knew it would be a long flight," he said. "After all, it's a long way to tip a rarie."

NY Times: Cole Porter's Two Biopics? They're Night and Day

Re: Kevin Kline in De-Lovely, I found this passage very interesting:

To preserve Mr. Kline's ability to act such emotional songs, instead of just sing them, Mr. Winkler let him record them live on the set, instead of lip-synching to a prerecorded track, which is standard practice in movie musicals. The result is an unusual intimacy, in which a filmgoer feels more like an eavesdropper, and the usual postmodern Hollywood worry about whether audiences will accept characters bursting into song evaporates.

"When we did the movie of `Pirates of Penzance,' I was driven fairly mad," Mr. Kline recalled. "I said: `How can you act when you're having to lip-sync, and how can we prerecord it when we don't know exactly how it'll be performed? What if I'm hanging upside down?' They said that's how film musicals have always been done, and I said, `Well, it's wrong!' "

I've always wondered why every movie musical wasn't done this way.

Most musicals aren't recorded live because if the actor is doing anything strenuous, the sound is not going to be the best it can be. Fine to record live if all you're doing is standing there, but, for example, there is no way Julie Andrews could have sung live doing the acrobatics during "The Saga of Jenny" in STAR!

And if you have some non-singers like Burt Reynolds in AT LONG LAST LOVE, we get all the bad notes that might have been bettered in the studio with retakes.

Thank goodness most of the movie musicals of the GOlden Age weren't recorded live.

the nakey beach was an interesting experience. It took us 3 hours to find it. It was located on Sauvie Island but Mark did not look up any directions prior to our leaving his house in Wilsonville. Well, I just presumed he knew where he was going! LOL! Sadly that wasn't the case and we drove around in circles trying to find Highway 30 (almost ended up in Vancouver) and then once we found Highway 30 we ended up going in the wrong direction! Finally we found a store with a Portland area map and we made our way to Sauvie Island. After driving the wrong direction on the island for about 40 minutes, turning around and going the other way, we found the beach....drove past the regular parts of the beach (with clothed people) and then found the clothing optional section of beach. There were TONS of cars! We then discovered that we needed to purchase a parking permit...which could only be purchased at stores near the bridge where you enter onto the island at! So we drove back the 15 miles to the nearest store...Mark bought the permit (a years permit...guess Mark is planning to return! LOL!)...so finally we arrive and....

And what about the actors who were dubbed? I have heard Leslie Caron and Audrey Hepburn try to warble through Gigi and My Fair lady respectively. Rex Harrison did sing live in the film version of My Fair Lady.

It has been used before and is of course not a standard practise, but why make a big deal of it?

Mbarnum, you can't leave us hanging like that!!!

It is a beautiful gorgeous day here in Tacoma.  I feel I really must get oustide at some point today.  As any Northwest person knows, it is a criminal offense around here to be inside on a gorgeous day.  They must be fully taken advantage of, come hell or high water, for who knows when we shall get one again.
My only problem is that I'm still kinda sick...I had to take a rest after taking a shower and washing the dishes.  That was enough to put me back on the couch for a while.  But maybe being outside in the fresh air will do me good...

we tromp through the trail to the beach and...there are lots of nakey people! LOL! Of course there were a lot of people that were dressed as well...it was about 4pm by this time and so it wasn't as crowed as it might have been earlier in the day. Lots of shapes and sizes and ages of people. I must say I think it is wonderful that people feel comfortable to let it all hang out! Decided to find a nice place to put our chairs and relax...found a spot near these young 20-something guys (wearing proper swimwear) trying desperately to attract the affections of three cute 20-something lasses who were sunbathing...2 with swimsuits and one without...closer to the water there were some corpulent 50-something heterosexual couples chatting and drinking beer 2 on a boat anchored at shore and two on land or wading in the water...all naked as the day they were born. By the way as we all know there is good naked and there is bad naked...! LOL! The beach was 98 percent bad naked! At least by this time in the afternoon. Of course I don't mean this as a judgement call...I actally was very impressed that these people all felt comfortable enough to bare all and not care. But if you were to go to a nude beach just to gawk, you would be a bit disappointed. After awhile we got a bit bored in the section we were in and we treked further down the beach to the mostly gay male section. We plopped down where we had a nice view of several very nice boats anchored just off the beach. We watched as a hunky George Clooney look-a-like and his buddies drank maritinis on board one of the boats...! They were all had swim trunks on...so don't get the wrong idea! LOL! But dang this guy was gorgeous!

Eventually it got very cloudy and we even felt a few slight raindrops so we decided it was time to finish up our first nakey beach visit. By they way we ourselfs (Mark and I) didn't not get nakey. Taking our t-shirts off was as close as we go to baring it all! LOL! Which was fine as there were lots of people dressed.

As we walked back to the parking area we passed by a game of volleyball...of course, what would a nudist place be without a game of volleyball! LOL!

So would I go again. I suppose so...probably will...won't get naked though! But it is a nice beach. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there as opposed to any other beach, but if Mark and our buddies want to go I would go again. All in all it wasn't too big of a deal or a shock for me. After about 10 minutes I got used to the surroundings and wasn't uncomfortable or anything.

The end!

I'm awake and coherent!  I was awake from about 7:30 a.m. on Friday until 9:30 p.m. Saturday, with only about three hours of sleep...and even then I slept only about a half-hour at a time.  I had a pedometer with me but I forgot to write down the steps per lap.  I started wearing it at 4:45 p.m. Friday, when we met to set up at the Relay-For-Life event.  I didn't take it off until about 6:30 p.m. when I got home.  The total number of steps that I took was 15,716!  I don't know how many miles that is, but I averaged six laps per half hour and over the course of the Relay, walked on the track four full hours, which is about 12 miles!  After they Relay was over, I went home, showered and met my family at a restaurant to celebrate my mom’s 62nd birthday...that's why I didn’t get to sleep until 9:30!

Anyway, a good time (and meal) was had by all.  I went right to bed and didn't wake up until 8:30 this morning and felt completely refreshed.  Now I'm up and about, listening to Donald's "June Bride" radio show and catching up on posts.  I will be going to my parents' house at about 3:00 p.m. to celebrate Father’s Day (I got my dad a DVD of "Miles Davis Live in Munich") as well as celebrate my parents' 40th wedding anniversary (my mom only has 5 days left to work before she retires--she's an LPN at a local hospital--and she has to work on their anniversary).  I finally get to give them the $100+ bottle of 1995 Cuvee Dom Perignon champagne!  So it’s all happening today.  Now I'm going to catch up (or catsup) on all of the HHW posts!  Good to be back!

Well, my Evil Cat, Mosby the Grey Ghost, conspired with the Dead Dogs That  Have Gone Before...Hotspur, Humbug, and the most recently staunch old Cully...and with The Lovely Wife to bestow upon me a treasure trove of gifties after midnight last night for Dad's Day.  This morning The Lovely Wife cooked me a fullsome breakie and tonight has a great dinner planned....after a relaxing dunk in the jacuzzi where we shall imbibe champagne.  Pretty good Father's Day for one who has sired no children (for which he is enternally grateful).

YES! To all those extolling virtues and talents of Charles Laughton.  I echo all those choices echoed by other as well as his directorial triumph with NIGHT OF THE HUNTER.  My fav CL's are ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, SPARTACUS, and HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (which is not only a brilliant performance, but a brilliant, meticulous film that not only gives us a great story but a great historical depiction of an age).  I used to do a pretty good half-assed impersonation of Laughton's Witness for the P line: "In fact, Mrs. Vole, are you not a chronic and habitual LIAR!"

Jose like the new pic! Eat your heart out, Carmen Cavallero!

I've always been a little torn about Laughton's Claudius in the aborted I CLAUDIUS film. Perhaps if we hadn't seen Derek Jacobi do it so magnificently, Laughton's few scenes (and the struggles he was going though to get them) wouldn't seem like also-rans. Too bad the didn't just continue filming and just replace Merle Oberon.

It is very HOT here in Tacoma, at least for us.  it has been in the high 80s all weekend and is expected to remain so though Wednesday.  The rain should arrive just in time for next weekend's Taste of Tacoma -- that infamous celebration that keeps me a prisoner in my own apartment one weekend a year!

Charles Laughton....my favorite performances have been mentioned.

Witness for the Prosecution especially was impressive to me....first saw it when I was about 11 years old...on television of course.

The Big Clock - first seen when shown by Frances Farmer on her afternoon television program.

I think my favorite though...is in Otto Preminger's Advise and Consent, as a ruthless senator controlling the confirmation process.  As I got older, and understood the political process more - I was even more impressed that an Englishman would have such an understanding of such a man, a Southern Senator - and our politics.  The whole cast was great...and Laughton's manipulations of everybody was delicious.

I'm sure for Washington, that is VERY warm, TCB. There's nothing here that's the least bit atypical weather-wise. It's like this every year.

And I grew up in a house without air conditioning. I really don't know how we managed except I guess none of us was used to it being anything except humid in the summer, so we slept in a puddle of sweat every night.

Good Afternoon!

Back from my walk...  Still a gorgeous day up here! (DR MattH) ;)

Back from practicing...  I went ahead and headed up to school.  Unforunately, when I got there someone was already in my teacher's studio, but, thankfully, the department gave me a key to the grand piano practice studio so I was able to practice in there.  Unfortunately, my music wasn't back, but it's only Sunday, so...  I did about two hours today.  More scales - added B-flat and D (I'm working my "outwards" in the "circle of fifths" - adding a sharp and a flat scale each day for now)  *(I know that won't make sense to some people on here, but if it does...).  And I added arpeggios today too, which were not as bad as I thought they would be.  After the technique portion of my session, I went ahead and went through the tricky part of the "Hello, Young Lovers" transcription - not that difficult once I picked it apart for a while.  I also settled on three or four Chopin preludes.  I figured the brevity of the preludes would make them easier to learn over the next few weeks - and kind of boost my confidence in a sense since I would be learning complete pieces.  I tried to find a Beethoven sonata, but after reading through a couple, I just decided to hold off on any "major structures" until later.  Then it was back to the apartment...

Back from my second walk... After stopping at the apartment, I went ahead and took my usual Carytown jaunt.  Since it was/is quite a nice day here, there were a lot of people out and about - but not so many that the sidewalks were crowded.  -And there were actually quite a few head-turners walking today too. ;)  On the return trip back up Cary Street, I stopped in the nice independent bookstore and picked up a copy of today's New York Times.  And I also went back to Bev's and got a hot fudge sundae with Rocky Road ice cream.  :)

And now I'm here posting on HHW!

It's been a good day so far...

But I still I want my music back!

-And I did step in some gum today... ah, well...

I have grand news, Dear Readers--Senora Lavadora wasn't at the laundromat today! She must have been celebrating Father's Day with her family and I say that's just fine by me.

While I was away doing laundry I stopped by the local electronics store (always a baaaad idea.) While I was there I bought some new blank CDs and a digital voice recorder so I could record my practice sessions and my upcoming rehearsals with DR MusicGuy in Chicago. I will tell you this, Dear Readers--it is a harrowing thing we do when we first listen to ourselves sing. Oh my gosh, I think I sound horrid. Just HORRID! My vibrato is too fast in some places, too slow in others...and nonexistent in other instances! My pitch in a few spots was off. Not that horrible, "oh, that poor thing is tone-deaf" kind of way, but off in that "that doesn't sound quite right to me" off by a quarter-tone kinda way. I have some major work to do by next Saturday (our first performance). This will be a very helpful (and painful) tool for me to have, and it's a tax write-off, so I decided to splurge on it. I think it was $60 or so. Not too terrible. And it's tiny!

Jose: Sorry you didn't find your books today. Maybe tomorrow... :-\

Hmmmmm....DR Ann connect the cable to the OUT connection on your tv and the IN connection on the VCR.  Turn on your tv to the channel the special is on and do a test....tape a bit and then try to see if it worked.

If not, make sure the VCR is on channel three and try again.

Ann, assuming that nothing is hooked up and you need to use the cable box, connect the cable from the wall into the cable box, then connect the cable box into your VCR, then the VCR to your TV.  This will, unfortunately, make it so that you can only tape what you're watching, but it's the simplest process.  Once everything is hooked up (and it all works), put your VCR onto channel 3, tune your cable box to the History Channel (here in Olympia it's 37), then set your VCR to tape the correct time, but TAPE CHANNEL 3!  Before the show comes on, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CABLE BOX IS TURNED ON AND IS ON THE CORRECT CHANNEL!!  If it's not, you'll tape a whole bunch of nothing.  Even though you're taping channel three, the TV signal is coming from the cable box, which you remembered to TURN ON AND TUNE TO THE CORRECT CHANNEL, right?

OR I was planning on taping it, also.  I could just send you a copy!  Send me private message.  Any other questions?

Thank you George!  I think I can do it based on those directions, but if it doesn't work, I'll probably ask for a copy :)

I am very tired and need to go soak my feet.

After brunch, I had no plans but ended up going to a street festival downtown with my mom.  It went on and on and I think we walked for at least 3 hours.  Well needless to say my feet hurt by the time we were leaving.

There were a lot of interesting things.  But I ended up only making one purchase, a white crystal ring that was a perfect match for a necklace I already have.

DR MBarnum, I loved your story.  But why are we calling it the "nakey beach"?

And re: singing live in movie musicals.

I prefer it.  I hate lip-synching.  Most people cannot do it properly and it just becomes obvious that they are not singing.  I hate it in music videos, I hate it in concerts and I'm happy that Kevin Kline wanted to sing his parts live.

I've now caught up on all the posts from Friday and yesterday (Saturday), but don't have time to read any of today's.  And I won't be at chat tonight.

Happy Father's Day All Fathers!

And Happy Fathers-by-Proxy-Day for those who have children without fathers!

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and father figures out there!

I am thinking today of DR WFO's and Joe's friend, Angel Jim (I think that is what they called him) and his children today, and I hope they can all be together again soon.

Holy cow it is warm in these here parts of the Pacific Northwest! It has been around 90 all day but as it gets to be later in the day the house is startin' to hold in the heat. I spent from 2 pm until 5pm in slumberland...just couldn't keep my eyes open! Now I am awake and so I went outside and fed the squirrels and watered some thisty plants. My cat Freddy and one of the neighbor cats (don't know his/her name) followed me around the yard as I watered. Freddy has lots of little friends in the neighborhood.

I am listening to "Virgin Tracks" by Lisa Richard. Track #10 is "When You're Waiting for Love" by Bruce Kimmel.

I have two Cds by Lisa - to me she reminiscent of Judy Kuhn. And that's not bad.

Chat fizzled all-too-quickly.
It's true that we can't all go around saying "I agree with you" for very long.  I wish people had faith that talking to someone they disagree with will not result in a fight.  Listening to those who don't agree with you enriches one's mind.

Good Evening!

Yeah.. What happened in chat?  -Sorry I wasn't there (again).

As for "Six Feet Under"... Let's just say it was definitely more "lighter" tonight, but...

Well... it's only just past midnight here on the east coast, and I'm already sleepy - which is good.  -I got suckered into a horrible horror movie on Cinemax last night around 4:30AM... "Wrong Turn".  It was about some 20-somethings being terrorized in the woods by some backwooods cannibals.  Why, of why?!?!?

Goodnight.

Sorry I missed chat...been busy listening to myself sing in various keys of flat. I don't know what's going on with me...I've never been known to sing flat before. I would blame the recorder, but then I would be projecting the problem onto a machine that in and of itself is designed to force me to hear exactly what it has recorded. I will say, though, that there are times that I don't sound like I'm even singing the song I started out singing, and I KNOW I'm better than that, so...who knows. All I can do is concentrate more on being on pitch and practice, practice, practice.

Jason - I'm watching BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES - and wanting to be born again (not in a religious sense, but literally) so I could be a Broadway star. Which is what I ALWAYS really wanted to be. Is it too late? ...Anyway, my point is, that as far as I can tell Jerry Orbach is singing flat.

Yay, I think my attempt to record the King Arthur special was successful.  A big thanks to George for his help!
Now I'm watching a bit of a Peter Paul and Mary special on PBS.  Always reminds me of my mother.  Which is ironic because she's currently asleep on my living room floor.  Staying with me for the night.

I'm kinda glad I didn't visit chat tonight.  I don't do politics well.

I thought that a lot of the OBC of Promises, Promises was sung flat!  I was quite surprised, although I haven't listened to it in quite a while.

Yay, I think my attempt to record the King Arthur special was successful.  A big thanks to George for his help!
Any time!

And I've been watching "Ebert and Roeper At the Movies" and they must be having problems.  During the middle of their review of "Spider-Man 2," the screen went blank and the segment started over.  On the repeat, it's gotten past the point that it stopped at the first time.  Over all, "big thumbs up" by both Ebert and Roeper.  They love it!!
