Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sitting and standing, and now it is time for you to post until the sitting and standing cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VENTOSE!
-
Enjoy Los Otros!
-
I really like Michael John LaChiusa's stuff, as well as Michelle Pawk's. Just saw her at Symphony Space a few nights ago--she was wonderful.
-
Happy Holiday Weekend for everyone!
Sailors all over New York at the moment for Fleet Street.
Our forecast? "Muggy Fog".
Lovely.
-
Meant to say Fleet Week.....not Fleet Street.
Oops.
-
Has anyone seen the new Wes Anderson film "Moonrise Kingdom"?
-
Good morning, all.
-
Want to see the new Wes Anderson. Want to see "Marigold Hotel." Will likely catch "Bernie" tomorrow. And hopefully there will be something good on the flights.
-
Good morning, all! I'd rather have my ears drilled than sit through the work of a pretentious twit like MJL ever again. His "I write art" and "Mark Shaiman grinds out popular crap" article for OPERA NEWS still angers me. I know he's a critic's darling and the "artistic" theatres love to produce his oeuvre. I hope to never hear another note he writes. There are far more interesting wirters looking for work.
And so, I am off to tape orchestra parts. Yesterday I finished the reeds and brass. I either missed on Friday the two horn parts or Joshie forgot to print them, so we'll deal with them next week with the final eight numbers. Until then, I've got the strings and harp to tape, and I should finish this round up by Tuesday.
I have nothing else to report. I am off to Toyland.
Good weekend vibes to one and all!

Do not miss "Hysteria!"

THe BBC's latest Swedish import series "Sebastian Bergman" about a criminal profiler started last night in the first of a two part three hour episode. I gave up after less than 30 minutes. It's made by someone who thinks constant hand-held shaky camera work adds realism.
-
I'm starting the last episode I have of Downton Abbey season 2. I'm guessing it's the Christmas episode, since i've seen Ep 8. But i guess i shall see.
-
It remains very hot with clear blue skies. Forecast is again 81 today.
-
Greetings from Toyland! Easy bus rides this morning, although the 104 bus driver never met a red light he didn't try to run; it was a little scary. He only missed one at 42nd Street and I suspect that was because of all the police cars.
-
Good morning, all.
Up too late last night watching wonderful movies, conked out on the couch, transferred self to bed at six in the morning, and am just now up and sipping wonderful coffee. It's going to be a hot one today, though only moderately hot, not hot like in DO THE RIGHT THING which is the first movie I watched yesterday. Hadn't seen it in close to ten years, and it was wonderful to experience it again, especially in HD.
Next, BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA, with John Wayne oddly but enjoyably cast as the first American Consul to Japan in the 1850s. This was all new to me and I really liked it.
Finally, coincidentally to the above notes, that masterpiece THE CONVERSATION. I'd seen this a few times over the years, of course, and always loved it, but I'd had the relatively recent Blu-ray release sitting in a to-watch stack for too long, and suddenly, that time was now. Having recently thrilled to FIRST NUDIE, I'd wanted to revisit some more Cindy Williams of the period, and that's all I had, so I put it in thinking I'd watch a few scenes and continue to save the whole movie for another day. Think again. From the opening shot in the main titles to those curious strains of music by David Shire, I was hooked. Hooked! And I stayed hooked to the very end. It had been too long since I'd been blown away by this film on any level at all, and this was the greatest yet.
I don't get in a triple feature like this as often as I should. These followed EARTH VS. THE SPIDER the night before. Haven't decided what's next.

EARTH VS THE SPIDER and ATTACK OF THE PEOPLE? Get out while you can! If you are not careful, every full moon you will have DR MBarnum baying under your window like a lovesick puppy.
-
I really like Michael John LaChiusa's stuff,
You're the one! ;D
-
DR ELMORE I feel pretty much the way you do about MJL, and I didn't even read the article in OPERA NEWS.
-
We had an honest to goodness thunder storm last night, replete with lightning and torrential downpour. As odd as it may sound for a rainy clime like ours, it's quite unusual to have thunderstorms with really heavy rain.
-
Continued vibes to DR VIXMOM!
What a lovely present DR EDISAURUS sent to DR JANE!!!
When we lost our kitty a few years ago, she sent me a book titled THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A GEORGIA CAT which was a great read!
-
I will say there is usually one knockout number in every MJL score. Unfortunately there are usually about 20 songs in every MJL score. ;)
-
Good morning!
-
Thanks for the travel vibes,DR Jane! I'll be here in Buffalo till Tuesday morning.
-
When I drove up to Tacoma years ago to review the Symphony for The Sondheim Review, I had Spring Awakening and a couple of MJL CDs to listen to. Perhaps that's the reason I so enjoy Spring Awakening. :)
-
Temperatures up to 95 degrees today....for the Gotham City 100.....or whatever it's called.
It used to be that the entire month of May was Indy 500 in the city and the state nearly 24/7.
However the brand has been tampered with, and now it's just another race....and not a very interesting one at that.....and the celebrations in the city are comparatively non-existent.
-
We have almost completed the shopping for Zach's incipient trip to China in a couple of weeks. The shopping list is quite odd. They don't want the kids to bring any cotton clothing since they want stuff to be able to dry quickly. Finding non-cotton t-shirts has been quite the adventure.
-
DR JMK I would be horrified to contemplate a Lois Kibbee commentary for a KRITZERLAND SHOW.....although, it would certainly be typed well.
-
DR Cillaliz--I'm in Buffalo visiting my family. I come here several times a year.
-
DR GINNY thanks for the MM/DRJOSE report.
-
Here are some lillies I have growing in my front yard. ;D
-
So I guess that is the Page Two lily dance.
-
I enjoyed last night's concert very much. I was hoping the vocalists would have had more songs to sing, though. It was the Buffalo Philharmonic's final Pops show of the season.
The orchestra played a "Hollywood Salute," "Moon River," a Lennon/McCartney medley and a Ray Charles tribute. Not sure if the Ray Charles tribute was wise--it just doesn't fit with a big orchestra.
A special guest was accordionist and local opthamologist (really!) Dr. Albert Schlisserman. He was really great!

And The Song Of The Day Is: I TALK TO THE TREES

I think a bottle of water has to be standing on the table because it cannot bend at the waist and/or knees in order to sit down. Then again, because the bottle has no power of locomotion of its own, and it is placed in its position by another life form....it is set down on the table.....
So - if you were the life form that placed the water bottle in said location....said bottle could be said to be setting on the table.
IF, however, you come into the room, and the bottle is already there, and you are not aware of the circumstances of its placement, the bottle could then clearly be described as standing on the table.

Concert report cont'd: Jan Horvath and George Dvorsky sang "Another Opening...," and a short Irving Berlin medley and "You're Not Sick, You're Just in Love." It was funny when Jan sang the line "put your head on my shoulder"--George had to really lean down to do that--I think he's about 6'4" tall.
Jan sang "I'm a Brass Band" and "If They Could See Me Now" and George sang "All I Care About is Love." Their solo showstoppers were "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and especially "Bring Him Home."
-
George, I assume you know this already, but I will say it anyway: if you have DirecTV or cable tv, you need to turn on CC through them in the Menu options, not on your tv itself.
-
DR Cillaliz--I'm in Buffalo visiting my family. I come here several times a year.
I'm in Phoenix, and I'm here all year.
-
Those are beautiful, JRand.
-
I will say there is usually one knockout number in every MJL score. Unfortunately there are usually about 20 songs in every MJL score. ;)
I like some MJL, but not as much as he writes. And yet, I buy it. All of it. I will Queen of the Mist eventually. And Giant.
And I agree with Elmore that he's a bit too pretentious and self-important.
-
Great photo, JRand.
Travel vibes for KevinH, FJL and all moving about.
-
Elmore, I plan to see Hysteria if it ever comes here. "The Vibrator Play" is playing here, so I can hope the movie will get here eventually.
-
Thanks DR LAURA and DR JOHN G - they are really prettier than my photo might suggest. Kind of like their owner.
-
LOL the governor of Indiana was introduced as The Mayor of the State of Indianapolis, Mitch Daniels.
-
Maybe Indiana has only been a state of mind all this time! :)
-
It's nap time.
But, ChasSmith, maybe it's just Hoosiers that are a state of mind. (Said by a native Kentuckian.)

I'm up after eight and a half hours of sleep.

Sunday afternoon greetings! We attended a beautiful service at The Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes and sat behind Ambassador John Campbell (ambassador to Nigeria, 2004-2007). We didn't know that until we got home and did some internet research, but I'd heard someone greet him as Mr. Ambassador and at the end of the service he turned around and introduced himself as John Campbell. The parishioners there were as friendly today as when we went there 5 years ago.
-
Fairly new sign at the church we attended this mornig:

True....true.... DR CHAS SMITH and DR JOHN G
-
They are having to repair the small tower and the roof and, then, the organ. The organ was damaged when rocks and roofing fell into it. This is damage from last August's earthquake, which also damaged the National Cathedral and the Washington Monument.

The water bottle is standing.
(Which could be spoken like "The water bottle is INSIDE THE HOUSE.")
Yes, a water bottle can "sit" as in "being set" somewhere. But water bottles, in fact, stand. It's all they can do. Like cows.
Ten dollars, please.
-
So strange to see a notice for "earthquake restoration" in Washington, D.C., DR Ginny.
-
We're back at the hotel watching the Indianapolis 500. When it's over, we'll head for the Folger Shakespeare Library for the 7pm performance of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. I read last night on their website that it's going to be a Wild West version - hmm.
-
Nice to see that we all agree about MJL!
:)
-
I had forgotten about that scathing attack that he wrote in Opera News.
Most unseemly.
-
So strange to see a notice for "earthquake restoration" in Washington, D.C., DR Ginny.
Yes, DL Iris, they were telling us at church that they didn't have earthquake insurance and the National Cathedral didn't, either. Who'd have thought they'd need it?
-
However...
I still love "Hello Again".
Anybody else?
-
And I liked "See What I Wanna See".
-
Page Three.
-
DR Ginny---true. That earthquake was quite a shock.
No pun intended.
:)

I loved the "Bird Proofing" part of it.
-
And I liked "See What I Wanna See".
I like parts of "See" and I really like much of "The Wild Party," which I know is scorned by others here, and a couple of songs from "Marie Christine."
Not the Opera News article.
-
Staying at a hotel close to the airport ready for early morning flight. First hotel I've been to where you check in automatically at a screen which prints out all details andissues a room key card.
-
I just had a visit from the charming and delightful DR / DD Ann. I had to send her an e-mail asking if she could possibly go and pick up my pain pills for me. She very sweetly did just that. My other friend ( who llives about a block and a half from the pharmacy) informed me that she was no longer available to help me on weekends. Oh well.
-
Arrowhead water bottles are a lot like Weebles; except they wobble and sometimes do fall down.
-
Watching a lousy movie called "Bad Actress." Doubt I will finish it.
-
Here are some lillies I have growing in my front yard. ;D
Lovely lilies!

Since 1914? That seems a long time for a restoration.
-
The string parts are going slowly; I'm checking page turns and all sorts of nonsense, so they're taking more time. I hope I can leave here in another hour.
-
Why did it niot occur to me how small 8 oz. bottles of Arrowhead water would be? No wonder I got such a great price on a twelve pack. I have chess pieces that are bigger thann these water bottles.
-
Did Jane and Keith already head out on their trip? Whoops, sorry, none of my business.
-
Cleaned up the deck and grill and all that good stuff. Even rearranged and restacked the firewood racks for summer. Today was much nicer than yesterday, but tomorrow the temperature is shooting up -- and with it the humidity, I have little doubt.
-

Your pain relief and a visit from DR Ann, not a bad combo ;)
DR TCB are you doing ok on your own? Will you be getting some PT soon?
-

We are still here. We went into town today and out to lunch. We went to a restaurant which doesn't permit dogs & then walked in the dog unfriendly park along the creek.
-
When we first planned to go to the graduation we were going to take Craig with us. Then we asked him to stay home with Sherlock instead, and to avoid getting a pet sitter with Yogi here. Now I suppose we could have taken Craig. It is just as well we didn't get him a ticket as the company that gives him consulting work had some for him.

I just found it odd that they would expect people to buy a whole new wardrobe to take a trip. I could see them suggesting certain things. But having them buy all new t-shirts seems a bit much.
-
Thank you DR TCB and DR JANE.
-
It has been a quiet day here....and hopefully another quiet day tomorrow.
I hope we get a report from DR GINNY on the Wild West KMK.

That doesn't surprise me. The year Bryan went away to camp I think the supplies cost almost as much as the camp did. Heck, if the kid had non cotton t-shirts he wouldn't need to purchase any ;)
-
ANOTHER eBook became available at the library. If I start over with the queue there will be 43 people ahead of me. I didn't expect this book for another couple of weeks, yet the one I expected hasn't come in yet. ::)

I'm off to read.

Well, today's final matinee of "Good Night Moon" was quite the success. There was only one light goober (the stage manager forgot one light cue but quickly realized that the picture of the cow jumping over the moon was still in the dark) and we had a full house...a waiting list, even! We only have one more weekend (six performances) and it's done. :)

I don't have DirecTV, I have a Comcast DVR. I couldn't find a CC option within the box set-up options, but I know that if I reset it, then the option comes up. I wouldn't want to have to do that every time I wanted to change it. :-\
-
Well, now that I've caught up with all the posts, I'm off again. I'm not going anywhere but I want to watch some TV up in my bedroom and my computer's not up there.
Until later...again.

That's funnier than anything in the movie, which played until the end though I was barely in the room as it was going on.

ANOTHER eBook became available at the library. If I start over with the queue there will be 43 people ahead of me. I didn't expect this book for another couple of weeks, yet the one I expected hasn't come in yet. ::)
I got my nook last week and haven't really had time to read anything on it. But I tried to check something out of the library. They have plenty of books marked [electronic resource], but only about 30 of those are nook compatible. Of those, five are volumes of Proust, and even those were checked out!
So, I'm on a wait list for a book about pizza.
-
Slow day, but had a nice cookout with friends. We grilled hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages, some vino. The theme was dishes you remembered from childhood, because of Memorial Day. Dessert was a jell-o cake.
-
Now off to finish re-reading the paper. I made it up to page 31 before I had to leave for dinner.
-
But a few more posts.
-
To push us toward page five.
-
KevinH, the concert sounds like fun, though it also sounds like a few of those concerts I've seen before. A lot of orchestra and not enough of the guest stars.
-
There are a surprising number of concerts coming here in June and July, including Idina Menzel and a trio of Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. The one I would really like to see is Glen Campbell, but I doubt after the trip that I would be able to afford it.
-

How is it possible that so many people at your library want the same book. I am not understanding. There ae that many people at your library with ereaders who all want the same book. I would think that most people would still prefer to borrow a hardcover. Especially if there were 43 people for the ebook. Maybe ebook lending at libraries in the US is vastly different than it is here. Here I think there are very limited books and you cannot borrow with a kindle or nook. And I don' know ayone who does it.

Are you on facebook? There are a few groups that find free or cheap ebooks for the nook. There are a lot more that do this for kindles. But a few do it for the nook. I find these pages invaluable.
-
DR Jane I also have a lot of reading to do this week. I have two ebooks from netgalley and one book I am dying to read from the library. Plus there are a bunch of other books i want to get to.
-
We had a great time at the Folger Shakespeare Library Theatre. The rootin' tootin' TAMING OF THE SHREW worked - the performers and staging were perfect.
Anyone who tried to watch the PBS broadcast of the Memorial Day concert from the National Mall knows that it was raining when our show was over, so we had kind of soggy walk to the Metro and to our hotel. We didn't know the concert had been stopped until we tried to watch the rebroadcast, but that explains why the Metro wasn't as crowded as I expected.

Finished editing the paper. Now, I'm waiting for my sister's comments and I send it off. The end of this long semester is in sight.

Travel vibes for Doug R, FJL, KevinH, Ginny and whoever is on the road.

Page five!

I'm caught up.
That's all I have.
Tomorrow, it's all about drums. I hope I'm able to coordinate my feet and hands. There's a reason why i don't play Bach on the organ, I'm sure tomorrow will solidify the reason

DR Cillaliz--I'm in Buffalo visiting my family. I come here several times a year.
Hope you're having a wonderful time!

We just finished THE SECRET WORLD OF ARIETTY and echo BK's approval, though we weren't as upset about the English voice cast as he was (we listened to the first 2/3 or so yesterday in Japanese and then finished up tonight in English). I correctly identified one of the English voice cast artists, whose plangent tones were quite unmistakable. :)

Great!!! :)
DITTO!!

We've had thunderstorms and rain and rain and rain and rain and oh, did I mention it's raining? I haven't checked the basement yet, but I'm really glad. It was so hot and humid today, this should break the heat. Tomorrow's high is 79 and even cooler on Tuesday!

Back from a VERY long day of theatuh. I'll write about Los Otros in the notes. After I had such a wonderful time catching up with its star, Michele Pawk - we'll be getting together for lunch after the show opens next week. And our main reed plays the show, so it was fun seeing him. Dinner was grand with FJL and Joe Kolinski and Harriet Shock. Then it was on to the one-acts, where I sat next to my good pals Richard and Elizabeth Sherman.

From the interesting timing department...
George, Goodnight Moon made an appearance on tonight's episode of Mad Men!
-
An episode, by the way, that is a game-changer.
Best one by far of the season.

Thank you Ginny and John G for the travel vibes. In the British Airways lounge now eating a bacon roll waiting for boarding.

It was lovely to see TCB today. He looks well, and I'm excited to see how the PT will help.
Having a quiet evening at home, watching Quantum Leap with DR Jed.

I just happened to turn to PBS after I finished watching "Harry's Law" (after watching "Mad Men") and Natalie Cole was singing a duet with her father Nat "King" Cole (on video, of course). The song ended and the orchestra played one or two notes and the conductor motioned for the orchestra to stop and you could barely hear someone tell Natalie Cole that they were stopping because of the weather. The announcer announced that they had to stop the concert due to difficulties beyond their control. They then started showing last year's concert, joined in progress.
It's supposed to be rebroadcast on Wednesday at 3:00 am. I wonder if they'll show it exactly as it was broadcast with the concert just stopping, or if they'll just show the whole concert from last year.

Hi George....
I really believe that this episode of Mad Men will be considered one of the best.

I wonder what BK will think of it.

Good night, brush.
Good night, bowl full of mush.
Wishing everyone a peaceful and relaxing Memorial Day.

BK may be heartbroken tonight by Mad Men.
We shall see.
