Title: THE FINAL MAY DAY
Post by: bk on May 31, 2012, 12:31:51 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a final day of May vibe, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - obviously that's not going to be in May.

RE: LEAP of FAITH having to pay $200K to be on the Tonys. i've always found it ridiculous that musicals have to pay to be on the Tonys or other talk shows. I was stunned when i first found out.

I think they have to pay the cast and the musicians and then pay for the scenery to be moved.

I also have something else to share.  I don't know how you feel about Hypnotherapy but I found a wonderful app for both the iPhone and the Android phone.  It's by Joseph Clough.  I won't go into a lot of details but I went to see a counselor and she felt I am very stressed out.  Of course the first recommondation was to put me on some kind pill.  If you know me, you know that I don't like taking any kind of drug and asked her for a more natural alternative to help relieve it.  We discussed a few treatments and Hypnotherapy came up.

I felt more open to trying that then the "take a pill" method.   I did some web research and stumbled on Joseph's website.  Since he gives most of his sessions away for free I decided to download his free app and to make a long story short, I honestly believe he is helping me.  He is on Facebook as well and is very accessible.  He seems to be a very nice young man.

Just thought I would throw this out there in case anyone who is stress out can give it a try.

Good morning, all! I have been up since 7:15, but I have been dealing with emails to Dublin, pdffiles, and a long email to a friend I've recently reconnected with on Facebook. I will shortly head out of here to see Joshie at City Center and to deliver a disk of the remaining orchestra parts to be printed.

I finished reading the dramatization of Rory O'More last night, and today I have to reread the EILEEN libretto. We've got abad leak in my apartment building at the moment, and I fear the broken pipe is under my bathtub, meaning a lot of excavation and other possibilities to disrupt my routine. I am not happy, but I also admit that I think my tub is the culprit.

I've got to get out and about. Thank you, all, for the vibes for Zach!

I'll check in from Toyland.

TOD:  We had a parakeet for several years when I was in junior high and high school.

A little before that, something had got me going on mice -- I'm thinking it might have been someone's school science project (was it one of my own?) -- and I went out one day and bought a lovely little white female mouse who lived in a little cage in my room.  Later, a male was acquired, and history was made -- history to the tune of a few very large cages and a few hundred mice overall.  That lasted for a couple of years, till either I lost interest or my parents called the party off.

Years later I babysat a friend's Yellow Nape Amazons a few times.  Okay, that doesn't count.  I think that's it.  The family was always dogs, and I have been always cats since.

JohnG, I haven't ever seen it and so am not sure how exactly it plays into his writing, but according to some private letters I have, Odets' affair with Frances Farmer and her subsequent breakdown was much on his mind when he wrote THE BIG KNIFE.

I was just linking this excerpt on rats on All That Chat, that WILLARD THE MUSICAL spoof with music by Skip

(lyric by Ellen Schwartz) I may have linked this  here before, but seems on-topic today: (it's about a minute-long, trailer-length :) )

To us he's more than that, boy
He's Willard, the star of our show

Fascinating, JMK. I love the play. I once saw a great production of it in Albany's Capital Rep. But the movie is uneven, more about too many guest stars than anything. i wonder if Frances is informing the wife (Ida Lupino is not my idea of Frances Farmer) or one of the other characters.

TOD:  Had dogs and cats.  Once had a chameleon and a baby (Easter) chick.  Untimely deaths for both the latter.

I once found an interesting rock and kept it on my desk throughout my Navy career...and I called it my "pet rock".  It never complained, never cried or sought attention, it never Number Oned or Twoed, it never spit up, it never ate or drank.  It was the "ideal" pet, actually.

It was my favorite non-cat non-dog pet.

On Saturday, Tacoma officially opens its latest bid at immortality, the LeMay All-American Automobile Museum.  It is located next to the Tacoma Dome; and, in fact, it took away about one half of the parking lot for the Tacoma Dome.  It will be the largest auto  museum in America (so they say)

It already has my vote for Ugliest Building in America.

On my way down to Toyland, I tried to check my home phone messages, in case there was word about the plumber. On every call, I kept getting a busy signal, which sent me into apanicand I hopped on the subway and came home. No messages, no busy signal now when I call my phone, and no word from a plumber. Damn.

So, I'm home.

Now for the frustration of the week.....

I did a slide show with music with Cast Bios......we got a donation of a 22" flatscreen and a 32" flatscreen - and I decided last year - with some help - that it would be great to put these in the lobby on the screen!

I used a couple of programs and finished it up.....took a few hours.

Tech Director sends me a photo of the tv in the lobby - the 22" Screen.......it seems they want the LARGER screen for the PIT....which means all of that LIGHT in the house.....and they are putting it on a beam where it will be visible to all of the people sitting house left....and ALL THAT LIGHT.....although it will go dark during blackouts....

But that means the lobby TV is so small, that it is hard to read the writing on the slides.....since it is also mounted about 4 feet over our heads.

THEN.....the TD kept telling me that the slides were cut off on the sides....although they looked fine on my computer AND on two DVD players and one Blu Ray player and two different televisions at my house.

I have redid them TWICE....still a problem.  We have tried all of the different display settings on the player & the TV.  Finally I asked him - "Are you running the DVD player directly to the television?"

"Uh - well....no....I am running it through the coaxial cable and the CCTV system so we can see it on all the screens....uh....maybe that's why it's messed up....."

"Could we run it directly from the DVD player?"  I asked.

"Oh no.....I want it on all the screens to keep the cast out of the lobby......"

I redid the slides AGAIN trying to keep everything in the CENTER of the screen....we will see if it works tonight.....  He never wanted to use slides....he wanted to use Power Point...which I don't think would be as nice.....but if it doesn't work.....

Well....he will get his wish.....he will get to do the slideshow bios.....JUST THE WAY HE WANTED TO FROM THE BEGINNING.

Back from Dr. Chew.  I must say it was completely excruciating from start to finish.  The shot, which last time I didn't even feel, was horrifying - he kept the needle in there for a full minute, twisting and turning, then he took it out and put it back in in a slightly different place.  The drilling was nauseating (although obviously I didn't feel any of it - you could have hit me with a baseball bat on that side of my mouth and I wouldn't have felt it) - well, just all of it.  My mouth is so numb I'll be lucky if I can eat by six.

I have received three notices now letting me know that my Social Security payments will begin on the 4th Wednesday of October, 2012.

Maybe they will send me three checks, too.

No such luck.  That will be your first check, which will be for September.  They get you coming and going.

Thursday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I went to the Y this morning and I did a mile and a quarter on the treadmill and 1000 steps on the NuStep.  From there I went for a haircut and style and now I'm ready to take on the world - or for a nap.

DR CHAS SMITH I think that WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST is most entertaining....and features Miss Sally Fraser, but not as the titular character.

I hope at some time along the way you have seen the movie it was a sequel to.....The Amazing Colossal Man.....featuring Miss June Kenney from Earth VS The Spider, and other classics.

Seen it as a kid, but I hope to find it.  When I was ordering a few more Gordon films the other day (yes, it's true, I was ordering a few more Gordon films the other day), I was shocked, shocked, to find that THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN doesn't seem to be available except possibly in execrable shape on one of those 50 or 100 movies collections.  I wonder what's up with that.

You are not eligible for August, because you have to be eligible for the entire month.  The first month you are eligible for is September, but you can't be paid for that until the month is over, which means payments start in October.  S.S has split up the payment dates from the third of each month to a staggered mailing schedule.  It is just our bad luck that we ended up as the fourth Wednesday of the month.

I had a pet turtle named Elmer who got soft shell.  My Dad told me he took Elmer back to the store, but I found out years later they actually flushed him down the toilet.
Don't ya just love euphemisms?

Kid: Hey, where's Gramma?
Dad: We took her back to the store.

...which reminds me of this joke:

Quote
Lenny went on vacation and asked Bobby to watch over his house. About a week later, Lenny calls home and asked "How's my cat?"

Bobby hesitated and sadly told Lenny his cat died.

"What?! You shouldn't have broken the news to me like that! You should have done it slowly. The first time I called, you should have told me he was on the roof. The second time I called, you should have said there was no way to get him down. The third time I called, you should have told me that you tried to get him off the roof, but he fell down and died," explained Lenny.

Bobby apologized and went about his day.

About a week later, Lenny called again and asked "How's my Granny?"

There was a long silence and then Bobby replied. "Well, she's on the roof."

We are happily ensconced in the Coon Rapids Best Western Plus. We had a stress-free flight and an easy time at the rental counter. We had a very small directional glitch with the GPS due to road construction but otherwise it was easy peasy. I just got up from a nap. The Ant is still sleeping. We may use the pool next. We also plan a trip to Wal-Mart to get some small toiletries that we couldn't get through Airline Security. I will use the Exercise Facility after dinner. We haven't decided yet if we're going to Applebee's or Baker's Square. It may be Baker's Square just because I used to love that place when I lived in Minnesota. It began as Poppin' Fresh (IIRC) and was actually a Pillsbury operated restaurant. Then it changed to Baker's Square. They made the best French Silk pie and the best Sour Cream Raisin pie.

That's all for now. Later, gaters.

Dr Elmore, I am so confused. On both trips to NY, when I stayed at your apartment, you told me you did not have a bathroom.

I knew that outhouse in the alley looked too much like a garbage can!  >:(

Have fun!

I'm having some Mexican food for dinner. I've discovered a great takeout place on 72nd Street.

Now you complain?

The next time you come to visit, if I'm not suddenly hospitalized or called out of town on any excuse I can manufacture, we'll have to do another HHW get-together  on that street with all the Indian restaurants. East Fourth? East Sixth?

Novocain has almost worn off - of course, now there's some discomfort from all that drilling on the tooth, and I'm starving but can't eat until almost seven, which is when we'll finish the rehearsal.  I picked up some packages, but naturally the two coming from UPS hadn't been delivered yet.  I am so sick of this UPS guy coming whenever he feels like it - if it keeps on he will RUE the day, oh, yes, he will RUE the day.

Another HHW NY get-together would be so much fun!

Of course so many of our NY HHWers have flown the coop, so to speak....but I am certain they would all join us for a meal or two.

And now that DR JRand61 will be getting is SS each month, perhaps he can fly in also! This would make me very happy! I will even let him have my side of the fire escape.

In other news.  Something I didn't post was that I had my yearly Mamo.  I then got a letter telling me that they had "found" something and I would have to have more views and an ultrasound.

I was trying my best to not panic but it was just another log on the old stress pile.   I don't know a lady out there who wouldn't have that horrible "What if?" question in their mind no matter how you try to tell yourself it's going to be ok.

The good news is that it was nothing and all is well.  :)  I feel like I dodged that bullet!

BK, do I remember that you always stock up on chocolate Twizzlers when you're in NYC because you can't find them at home?  Well, I bought a package in NY and now I'm hooked, too.  Yesterday I looked at 4 places here in town and didn't find them, so went to the Hershey website where I could check store availability by zip code.  It told me to go to Walmart, which I rarely do.  I've just come from there with 3 - count 'em 3 - packages!  Have you tried your local Walmart?

On Saturday, Tacoma officially opens its latest bid at immortality, the LeMay All-American Automobile Museum.  It is located next to the Tacoma Dome; and, in fact, it took away about one half of the parking lot for the Tacoma Dome.  It will be the largest auto  museum in America (so they say)

It already has my vote for Ugliest Building in America.

Lawsy, Vixmom, we're going to have come back there and enclose y'all in bubble wrap.  :)

Seriously.  It's not safe for her to leave the house.

I'm heading home.  It's a bit early to go to the theater to begin the last weekend of "Good Night Moon," so I'm just going to take a little nap.  I had to get to work early for a meeting this morning, so I really didn't get a lot of sleep...which isn't unusual, but it was less than the not-enough that I normally get.

Be back later.

Well, I didn't get to take a nap, but I did get to the theater on time.  It was a good show tonight..only five more performances!

Topic of the Day:

For as long as I can remember, we've always had cats.  But when we lived in Germany (when I was between 4 and 7 years old), we had a turtle named Herman.  I don't remember what happened to Herman when we left. :-\

Sometime after we moved here to Washington (when I was 10...we lived in Colorado in between), I think while I was in middle school, my parents thought that I should have a dog.  They got me some kind of black lab or something that I named Muppet.  We had him for a few months and I had no idea of how to train him so he never got trained.  He chewed the bottom of my parents' grandfather clock and their marble table.  Not good.  My parents found someone who would take him and we had to give him away.

It really was for the best.

Well, it's official...I just found out that I have not been cast in "Titus Andronicus."

Oh, well.  I'll still work on the production.  That'll be fun. :D
