Title: WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL DAY
Post by: bk on June 15, 2012, 09:35:47 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wonderful, wonderful and spoke of a day, and now it is time for you to post until the wonderful, wonderful cows come home.

And I'm the first? -- at two thirty (not to be confused with tooth hurty) in the morning?

It was necessary to find out what E&T meant, since it's invoked by all too many DRs.  Now that I'm enlightened, let's have a little less of it.  Not mentioning any names here (producer Julie).

A longer wait than anticipated in Grand Central (I never check return times, and I apparently just missed one), plus the annoyingly lengthy ride itself (why do the return trips always seem to be twice as long?), afforded the time to speed-read through about two-thirds of a very entertaining book I just happened to pick up this evening.

That's all for now, time for some zzz's.

The Jumble Puzzle, which appears on page D1 of Thursday's edition, actually was the puzzle scheduled to appear today.  The Jumble originally scheduled to appear Thursday as well as the answers to Wednesday's puzzle are on page E1 today.  The answers to the puzzle published today appeared Thursday, and the answers to the puzzle published Thursday will appear Saturday.

I had a wonderful time yesterday with the group.

The reading was lots of fun and Peter F. asks great questions.

That Guy Haines, apparently he got lost on the subway so he never showed up. He acts like he's never been in New York before!

Deb, unfortunately no pictures were taken so the even will live on only in our minds.

I ate light at Joe Allen's. I had black bean soup and a spring vegetable salad. Very delicious. Mr. Kimmel kept trying to tempt those of us who didn't order dessert with his cobbler but I (and Julie) resisted. BTW, Julie does look great.

I had to leave around 9:30 (as Larry said at one point, getting up at 5am every day is a killer).

I'm really glad I had a chance to attend yesterday. Seeing everyone (including Tom Nondorf) was a treat and meeting Chas was excellent. He fits right into the wacky HHW crowd.

TOD:

I was email-acquainted with DR JMK through our mutual interest in Frances Farmer.  A couple of times he asked me some Broadway trivia questions.....and then told me that they originated at a site called Haines His Way...which he told me how to find.

I looked at the (old) board, and it was most entertaining.  So I joined, and have been around to annoy the populace ever since.

My profile shows that I have been a member since October 22, 2003.....so almost NINE years.

Good morning, all! As soon as it was light in my apartment, I was awake, but I fought the urge and slept until 7:15. Most of my day will be spent on the notes to EILEEN. The deadline is in place and i've got to meet it. Around 11, I will head down to Kinko's to pick up the five orchestra scores I had bound yesterday, then I will head to the NYPL to retrieve the information I managed to lose yesterday. I am really angry at myself for this carelessness since every other note is here, close to hand,

BK, thank you again for hosting a trememdously entertaining evening. The company was great, the food was excellent, and your presence was the most sparkling gift one could have, much more sparkling than the dress of the blonde at the table next to us!

DR Julie looked glorious last night, and everyone - beginning with me - gave her hell for being E&T; she is truly missed. I usually see DR FJL only at his apartment when I get an invitation to one of Skip's wonderful meals, so it's always a treat to see him out and about. Marriage hasn't changed our DR Ben at all, and I really enjoyed talking to DR ChasSmith, who assimilated with the crew from the madhouse very quickly. No dog he!

We have to get some of our regional DRs into the City. DR MBarnum is excluded, since he assimilated so well he now thinks he's Eloise and my fire escape is the Plaza.

I ended up at HHW, thanks to Liz Callaway in 2003. While I credit, and daily thank, BK for revving up my career, as his production schedule got heavier, I often turned him down because I was on another project. As a result, I missed completely the ugliness he was going through with the label that shall not be named, and when I finally heard about it, it was an an even uglier, and prejudiced,  picture of the mess from the source of allegations who replaced BK.

So, since I didn't get my first computer until September 2001, I completely missed BK's website, but Liz told me that he had one, and as soon as our meeting was over, I came home, found HHW, lurked a bit, and sent BK an email. My memory is that it was around Thanksgiving, and I wished him a happy holiday. In his response, he asked me if I'd do an interview and i said yes and forgot about it. A few weeks later, the interview showed up, and I answered all of the questions. When the interview wwnt up on HHW, I lurked about out of curiosity to see what people would say. Very little was said about the interview, but I found that I really enjoyed relating with the DRs daily, and so, at some point in the spring of 2004, i joined HHW. I've had two periods where I was off the board for several months with poor health, August 2004 was the first, after I got back from a good job at Goodspeed  to deal with a horrid abscess requiring surgery, a eighteen feet ofcollapsed bookcases needing repair and no air conditioning. I was in no mood to be social, and I would respond to BK's emails with "I'll be back when my mood improves." Shprtly after that, for reasons I don't remember now, there was an HHW get-together, with me on crutches, and DRS Noel(?), Ben, and td(?) at Barrymore's as I rcall. It's been too long now, but I feel the HHW clan has become a major part of my family.

TOD: I lived in Middletown, Ohio, for about a year in the mid-1980s during which time I interviewed a native son, one Larry Moore, for the newspaper. We kept in touch off and on over the next 20 or so years, and it was through him that I came to HHW. I peeked in occasionally before joining through him, and I, too, am grateful for the family I've made here.

Our DR JohnG is the sort of gentleman I aspire to become and know I'll never reach. What he doesn't tell you is that once he'd interviewed me, I killed the article.

Several well-intentioned friends in Middletown who knew about my participation in the Pulitzer Prize win for SUNDAY iN THE PARK WITH GEORGE decided, without asking my opinion, to take my story to the local newspaper. One day I got a call from this young reporter asking for an interview about the subject. I was very unhappy to learn about this turn of events since I felt, while I was proud of the achievement, that it was Steve Sondheim's business, and not mine, to discuss my involvement, if he chose to do so.

After my interview with this pleasant young man, I called the editor of the newspaper and begged him to kill the story. My friends in Middletwn were very unhappy with my decision and I think I did the right thing; it was my tale to tell when I chose, not when I was forced.

Then, in 1989 or 1990, I was working on a show by Barry Kleinbort in Cohoes, NY, at the very haunted and spooky Cohoes Music Hall, a jewel box of a theatre and one helluva a scary place. As I left the theatre one night, a pleasant young man introduced himself to me. It was Mr JohnG who was working for a local newspaper.

Interesting to find so many DRs who came from, or are living in, the Midwest.  Columbus is my hometown and my dad now lives in Cincinnati, as does my sister and her family, and a couple of branches of the family were clustered in both the Ashland and Sandusky areas for a while.  I later went to school in Cleveland, so even though we (as a family) also lived in Fort Lauderdale for some years, and I lived in L.A. for even more years, Ohio is still the home base.

TOD - When I started going to NYC for work in October of 2004, I spent some time with DR Elmore, our longtime friend from here in Middletown, OH.  At the time he and my high school/college friend Doug were the only 2 people we knew in the city.  Larry told me then about this site and I lurked for about a month before DR JRand posted a picture of a mystery woman who I could identify.  Signed up, ID'd the photo, and the rest is history.  Thanks to DR Elmore bringing me here, we now have many friends in New York and we no longer feel like tourists when we're there.

And, that same week in 2004, DR Elmore kept saying he was "juggling two women," because his friend Jane was also visiting from out of town.  I'd been on here for several months before we connected the dots and realized that he was talking about our very own DR Jane and a year later she and I met in person.

My office is fairly relaxed about listening to music or other things (with headphones) while working. That being the case I scoured the Internet looking for radio stations and/or Web sites that played show music. I found the BBC and I also found Bruce's old site which had a radio program by the great Donald Feltham. I didn't know at the time that these were old, archived shows because the meltdown had happened. Once I listened to the last of the shows that's all there was. I began looking for Feltham and Kimmel and that lead me to this site (in it's old format) way back in 2002. I haven't been here since the beginning in 2001 but I did arrive a few months later in the spring of 2002. I came for the music and just stayed.

I'd been playing the trivia contest in Bruce's notes for a while before I'd been aware of the postings.  then Bk mentioned he'd put clues in the postings (or something to that effect) so i became aware of the postings.  All this was around the time BK got involved with doing Skip and my THE LAST STARFIGHTER original cast album in 2005.

But Skip  knew Bruce since at least 1996, when Bruce saw Skip's show TIME AND AGAIN in San Diego.  And I'd known BK's work since the 1970's of course, and I was even at the NY premiere (well, the 6 pm showing anyway, i had to work during the day) of FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL back in the day..

Before DR Elmore introduced me to this site, he'd introduced me to BK's work by sending me a copy of Liz Callaway's Frank Loesser CD.  A few years later, I stumbled across a Borders special compilation of highlights from the V-S series and that led me to many of BK's other CD's and a lot more of DR Elmore's work.  That Borders CD is still a favorite.

T.O.D.

I came to this site by way of six degrees of Jerry Herman.  My dear friend Sharry and I had just finished (I think) our run of HELLO DOLLY!; and since she was not computer savvy, she asked if I could try to find an address or P.O. Box for Jerry Herman by way of the computer search.  Well Jerry Herman took me to HELLO DOLLY!, which took me to Carol Channing, which took me to recordings which took me to producer Bruce Kimmel, which took me to Guy Hianes and this site.

I lurked at the site for about a week.  I was amazed at this little group of witty, knowledgeable, and entertainment-oriented souls.  One day I got up the courage to comment on something, and they were all so wlecoming that I stayed.

My profle says I joined October 21, 2003, and since DR Jrand's profile says October 22, 2003; I believe this must be the date of the new board, and not the day we joined.  I thought I had found this site in 2002, but what do I know?

And, as elmore said, the people who gather at HHW quickly became friends and then, over the course of the years, they have become an important part of my family.

And I bet he will learn some great Chinese swear words!

Back from a good but not long enough rehearsal - she'd booked the room for three hours and I'd asked her to change that to four but she forgot, I guess.  So, we spent the first two hours running the show but constantly stopping and starting so I could make little changes or give notes.  Then we took a fifteen-minute break and then began doing what I assumed would be a full run-through, but at the halfway point we had to vacate the room - a shame, it was going very well.

The significant and act-altering changes I'd made at the last LA rehearsals all worked well.  And the final large addition I made just two weeks ago really helped everything and finally made the act seem structured and whole.  The new order works really well, and the patter all works now.  Most of my notes today were about speeding up the delivery - she has a tendency to make very unnatural pauses within sentences and it seems like she's trying to remember her next line - she isn't, but that's what it seems like.  And then I just hammer home that she has to speak the patter as if it's the first time and she's making it up and is excited to be telling these stories.  When she does it right it works great.

Rehearsing next door to us for a play I've never heard of at some theater on some Cape, was our Brain leading lady from NYMF, Amy Bodnar, who I thought was amazing in the Brain.  Hadn't seen her since, but it was great to see her and she looks fantastic.  We had a nice chat and I gave her many compliments.  And then out came Randy Graff, so it was like old home week.

Then we moseyed on over to Joe Allen for some lunch.  I had the tostada with eggs, chorizo, and whatever.  It was, as always great.  Now I'm relaxing until show time, and after the show I'm meeting Crista Moore at Joe Allen.

And finally this cherce correction from DR Laura's own Arizona Republic:

The Jumble Puzzle, which appears on page D1 of Thursday's edition, actually was the puzzle scheduled to appear today.  The Jumble originally scheduled to appear Thursday as well as the answers to Wednesday's puzzle are on page E1 today.  The answers to the puzzle published today appeared Thursday, and the answers to the puzzle published Thursday will appear Saturday.

Oh, that is cherce indeed!

Received a vintage program from a long ago concert (I'll let you guess who the artist was, and, no, it's not Edmundo Ros), and inside were two ticket stubs wrapped in a paper with these cherce comments:

October 25, 1970
U of U
Debbie & I
rained
Negroe folk singer
Jewish comedian

The really funny thing in all of that is that U of U is no doubt my alma mater, the University of Utah.  I probably knew the note writer.

I think it was the fall of 2002 when I discovered HHW (old board), and didn't really "Get it" at first, but then I jumped in and I've been here on and off ever since.  It's hard to keep up during the busy parts of life, but I've made some great friends here and it's a great place to ask for an opinion, share knowledge, share "stuff" and things like that.  I'm ever grateful for the support, vibes, and net-friends I've made here.  We all help each other here, it's a wonderful place.

Today I had the Bacon Sundae.  I'm only a little surprised to report that it was delicious.  The vanilla soft serve (which seems to be of a very good quality, but I've never had it by itself), the chocolate and caramel syrups, and the bacon.  Very compatible flavors.

Just what I needed, of course, after last night's Hot Fudge Pudding Cake With Vanilla Ice Cream and Hot Fudge Sauce.

Thanks for expanding the story.  I don't remember hearing this before.

I came so very close to suggesting to DR elmore, who was rather stressed for activities with both of us in town, that we all get together instead of separately.  If only I had we would have met sooner.  I didn't make the suggestion as it was my first trip to NY & my  first meeting with DR elmore.  I was selfish and wanted alone time with DR elmore, but then I didn't know then DR Ginny would become a big part of my life here at HHW.

Yes, DR Jane, that's it.  The NuStep was part of my cardiac rehab routine and I really liked it.  The foot & leg motion reminds me of pumping the old player piano that was in the basement of the house where I grew up.  Another reason I like it is that it's made in Ann Arbor, MI.  In fact, co-inventor Steve Sarns, who received a Master's in kinesiology from U of M in 1988, was awarded an honorary Doctorate at this spring's commencement.

Bruce has know occasional DR Penny O since about forever.  I have known them both since I was 15 when we met at Hamilton High.  Penny was taking a trip to L.A. and I suggested she give Bruce a call.  I had his home number & decided/insisted she also needed his work number which I knew had changed.  I did an internet search & found his new work number was no longer and also found HHW.

On that day in the notes Bruce wrote:
You remember yesterday I mentioned my crush on Hayley Mills and Hayley Mills? Well, to tie all this together, one of my very first movie crushes (on someone close to my age) was an actress named Susan Gordon, who played Danny Kaye's young daughter in The Five Pennies (the "older" version of the daughter was played by yet another early crush of mine, Tuesday Weld, but I can't write about Tuesday on a Thursday). Oh, how I loved Susan Gordon, she was so cute and perky. And, of course, she was/is the daughter of Food of The Gods' very own director Bert I. Gordon. I wonder where she is today and what she's doing. If anyone knows, have her call me. She did attend my high school for awhile, so I did get to know her a teeny bit.

I surprised Bruce and posted:
Bruce, If you want to get in touch with Susan Gordon, give me a call or write. Keith & I are still good friends with her. I have known Susan since 4th grade.

Glad to hear you liked it!

I was home working on something....I think editing some photos I had taken for a photography class...and listening to Lost in Boston (can't remember the number, but it's the one with Rupert Holmes on it) The CD was supposed to be over and all of a sudden I heard "I Love Fish" (I think that's the name of it) Quite frankly, I was dumbfounded. I couldn't figure out how that was on the CD and not listed.  So I emailed Rupert (he's a friend of mine for those who don't know that) and he wrote back and said "That's Bruce Kimmel"  I think he also told me it was an Easter egg.   Anyway, I googled Bruce Kimmel and found this site.   I've been here ever since. Can't remember when that was

Yep, recumbent cross trainer, DR Jane!

If our Y has one I'll give it a try.  I was progressing on the regular cross trainer when I realized it simply hurts my shoulders, in a bad way, too much.  I do weights and a couple of other exercises for my shoulders plus swimming once a week.  I use weights for my legs, 10 minutes on a recumbent bike, 20 minutes on the stairmaster, and 1 mile or more on the treadmill.  I run on and off during the mile and do it in about 13 minutes.  If I have extra time & jog longer I go an extra half mile.

It wasn't too long after that...I think less than a year, and I met DR Jane and her DH Keith, DR George, DR JMK his DW Betsey and their boys at DR JMK's home in Oregon.  After that I went to NYC and was in the first walking and eating tour by DR Jose. I have loved the get togethers since then.  I don't really think of my friends here as net-friends. I think of everyone as a friend.  You don't find many sites where everyone actually gets together like we do.  It is the best site on the internet~!

Why, do you want to add heart attack to your list of ailments?  Don't even try it, you might like it. ;)

I met Bruce when I was fourteen. He called me one day and said that I MUST go see ONCE UPON A MATTRESS at the Bluth Brothers Theatre in Culver City. It was my first live theatre experience and my first real musical. I loved it. I auditioned for the next show, LI'L ABNER, and did that show and a couple others. Bruce did several shows there as well, as did Walter Willison and Allen Abelow. An absolutely amazing group of people passed through the theatre during the two years it was in existence. Just knowing Fred and Don Bluth was an experience in itself.

Bruce went off to LACC and I went to UCLA and we lost touch. In 2006, I was doing some web searches when Bruce's name popped up. I went to one of the links (HHW) and yep, same Bruce Kimmel. I emailed him, which was followed by a lengthy phone conversation. He, of course, said I MUST join HHW. (Bruce can be very persuasive.) Thus began my tenure at HHW.

A friend of mine often participates in a blog that is largely political. He's told me many times about the online  arguments the members get into. There's lots of name-calling and very little listening, and even less respect. That does not interest me! We're friendlier here! I've never heard of another blog where the members actually have get-togethers.

Thoughts would be appreciated on this.  We're in the early planning stages for taking the boys to Europe next summer.  Here's what I'm proposing

Flying from Portland to Philadelphia
1=2 days in Philly to see the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, etc.
Train to NYC
2-3 days in NYC, see a show and the sights maybe meet with HHW-ers
Plane to London
4 days in London
Tower, Millennium Plaza, Museum, Buckingham Palace, West End
Train to Paris
2-3 days in Paris
Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Champs, etc.
Train to Venice
2-3 days in Venice
St. Marks, etc.
Train to Rome
3-4 days in Rome
Ruins, Vatican, etc.
Fly home

Yes, except I didn't go to Chicago until after the Specialty was over.  I figured with two big dogs in the car I was safe.  He is also one of my favorite Berner people, very funny guy.

TOD:  I saw a post by BK on allthatchat.com that had a link to HHW.  I realized at some point that BK was the producer of Brent Barrett's CDs and a few others I had.

I sent BK an email and asked if he thought he might be doing another CD with Brent.  He answered that Brent was very busy at the time but that they might do one at some point.

He also mentioned that he had had webtv and was interested that I still had it at that point.

I lurked on the site on and off for a couple of years!  I finally joined in the fall of 2009.  I've enjoyed very much meeting BK and many HHW members!

That's quite a workout, DR Jane!  Be careful with the NuStep, because your arms move in opposition to your feet and I'd worry about your shoulder.  I suppose you could just not hold onto the hand grips and exercise just your legs, but be careful not to get smacked in the face!

Depends what they are into.   Does trekking through the Colosseum in Rome in the heat appeal to them?  I have always read not to travel in Italy & other countries in August.

I asked Craig since he has traveled throughout Europe & also took a trip with Keith when he was thirteen.  At 13 he didn't like Paris & loved it as an adult.  He suggested there isn't a lot for teens to do in Venice ( I say, & he agrees, it's beautiful but very expensive)  Craig asked if you have  thought about Germany (Munich maybe) or the beaches of Spain?

I've never been to the Amalfi Coast or Rome but think it might be more fun staying in someplace like Positano after your tour of cities.

I think Philly is a great city for Americans to visit and that they will enjoy NY & London.

Except for the face smacking part it sounds like the cross trainer.  If I give the NuStep a try I won't go more than a minute to begin with.

I like the routine I have now.  Occasionally I try something new only to find it bothers my back or shoulders.  Rotating machines keeps me from getting too bored.  When I first began going I mostly used the treadmill & had to hold on to keep my balance.  I feel much stronger now & I think the work outs are why my swimming is improving.

Think about trying out an easy water aerobics class and feel free not to do all of the exercises or only a few of each to begin with.  After going to several classes I began going on my own & continued the exercises I liked.  From there I worked my way up to doing laps.  You might find the class fun & stick with it.  I found the exercises more of a workout than I expected them to be.

A couple of years?  I feel so violated!

Yes, DR Jane, water exercising is what led me to the Y in the first place.  I had a pretty bad flare up of achilles tendonitis in May and attributed it, in part, to doing my walking on the concrete basement floor.  Just had to give my ugly blisters some time to clear up!

DR JMK you might think about giving yourself an extra day in London while you adjust to the time change.

Hi all, I had a ton of things to do today and I didn't get hardly anything done.  Just didn't feel that good and even took a nap this afternoon.  I did manage to get the the yard mowed in the cool of the evening but I feel pooped and will be off to dreamland shortly.

I was posting on another board and Bruce started posting there too.  He mentioned his board and I started lurking.  One night the topic was about Errol Flynn who I have always loved.  I made a post and next thing I knew, I was part of the HHW family.  I've never been happier.  You all have seen me though the good times and the bad.  I hope you know that I adore you all and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

I will never forget the NY gathering.  Or the first time I went Ice Skating and had to call DR Jane to tell her, only she wasn't there and poor DH Keith had to hear me chatter on about how excited I was about it.  He was so nice about it.  Or the very first time I went to NY and met DR Elmore.  I'll never forget his kinds when he gave me his business card and told me if I got lost or scared to find the nearest starbucks (because of them being on every corner) and to call him and he would come get me.  Or the book reading with Bruce.  I felt shy going in and wasn't sure where to sit so I grabbed a seat towards the back and Bruce said "You'll be more comfortable  up here."  I remember shyly saying, "I'm Danise" and he said, "I know who you are"  that made me feel so welcome.  And how the whole gang walked together to go get something to eat afterwards.

I remember going to see Penny's play and how good it was.  I remember the walking tour and the jokes and good food we had.  And after that long day of eating and walking we went to see DR FJL and Skip.  No one went to bed hungry that night after the spread they provided. In fact, I think I waddled back the hotel room.

I remember meeting DR Ben and DH Ant who made me feel so at home.

I've never met DR TCB but I somehow feel a bond with him as well.  I hope to someday meet all of the very Dear DR's I haven't in a another gathering where EVERYONE can be there.

I remember, I remember.........  :)

Danise: You asked about the brand of fridge I got. It's a Hotpoint - a British label (actually made in Poland) whose parent company in U.S. is General Electric.
I don't think i've every heard of a Hotpoint.  I hope it works long and well for you, DR Doug R!

I'm glad.  I know I sounded like a little kid--I was that excited.  And then the next day I hurt in places I didn't know I had!  :)

Oh, before I forget--the time the ladies of HHW went to have our makeup done by Bobbi Brown.  I didn't know who that was, still don't really but it was fun.

Thanks for expanding the story.  I don't remember hearing this before.
I just now recall that there was a missing chapter in there, but I'll settle for the gloss. The Barry Kleinbort piece was "Angelina," which I still have on a cassette somewhere.

Ruins, Vatican, etc.

I don't know why, but these words made me think:  "You've ruined the Vatican for me"  (there's a Walter Matthau reference in there somewhere)

Back from the play and a lovelier than lovely late supper with Crista Moore - she'll be attending the show at the Metropolitan Room.

Thoughts would be appreciated on this.  We're in the early planning stages for taking the boys to Europe next summer.  Here's what I'm proposing

Flying from Portland to Philadelphia
1=2 days in Philly to see the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, etc.
Train to NYC
2-3 days in NYC, see a show and the sights maybe meet with HHW-ers
Plane to London
4 days in London
Tower, Millennium Plaza, Museum, Buckingham Palace, West End
Train to Paris
2-3 days in Paris
Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Champs, etc.
Train to Venice
2-3 days in Venice
St. Marks, etc.
Train to Rome
3-4 days in Rome
Ruins, Vatican, etc.
Fly home

I think you need to add:

Meet Doug  in London

Meet Francoise in Paris

oh yes.... and collect Vixmom in NY and take her with you
