And here's a photo from the first night - this is Sami (on the left) and Sara Staitman.  Sami will be playing a prominent role in an Outside the Box episode, and Sara will be in another one.

I see that the AFI have a 70mm screening of PORGY AND BESS in September. I assume this isn't a new print? I saw the film when it was first released and it's a great shame that it's been unavailable for so long. Unfortunately I didn't see it in its 70mm roadshow presentation but saw it on general release - at a very packed cinema I recall.

Good morning, all!

DR ArnoldMBrockman, enjoy your holiday! I hope wherever you go or whatever you are doing, you are out of the heat, enjoying cool refreshment and good times with friends and family. I look forward to your report.

I have another lazy day and I am looking forward to it. I have to find those BALLET BALLADS proofs and get to work on them.

DR TCB, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's condition.

DR JohnG, before you watch that dreadful Puppet People film, get very drunk.

I don't know if we should be happy or concerned that DR MBarnum is seeing MAGIC MIKE today; much as I hopeand pray to God for a cure for his erotomania, I fear this may only aggravate it.

Last night I watched a VHS copy of the 1953 Disney film THE SWORD AND THE ROSE, which I hadn't seen since its first release when I was six or seven. After all the seasons of THE TUDORSwith their bumping humping grinding nudity and skinny Henry VIII, it was interesting to see Disney's take on a Victorian novel's look at the same Tudor court. I quite enjoyed the film. The color was beautiful, and late in the film, when Glynis Johns as Mary Tudor, Henry VIII's sister, slugged villain Michael Gough with an oar, I had a sense of deja vu and was back in the Middletown OhioParamount Theatre, where I first saw the film.

It was interesting to see a film where Katherine of Aragon isn't a suffering victim of Henry's adultery but a bitch, and I womder if the pretty young thing dancing the La Volta with Henry was Anne Boleyn. I loved the actor playing Henry, and both Richard Todd and Glynis Johns  look like fantasies of  Disney heroes and heroines. It was a great deal of fun, and I've discovered that the film isavailable on DVD as a "special" to members of the Disney Movie Club. I may have to join to get myself a copy.

Never saw that - it would be interesting to see it. Unfortunately Disney haven't taken much interest in making available their early '50s live action films.

Alas, I was e&t yesterday.  I was a tough day.  Starting with breaking up another dog fight with DD's 2 & 3 and of course being injured in the process.  Not a good way to start the day.  Legally Blonde callbacks went well and I do believe we have all but 1 person for our cast providing everyone accepts.  We'll know more later in the week.  I played and sung a wedding in the afternoon which was great.  Then the DP and I went to PF Changs for dinner, got some frozen yogurt and came home.  Upon coming home, there was this HUGE party two doors down from us and a live mariachi band had just begun to play.  So, I sat in my backyard like so much fish and listened to the band until it got too chilly to be outside.

That was my Saturday.   Now I'm off to church for the morning and I'll plan on catching up around these parts in the afternoon.  I need a nap already.

Yes DR CHAS SMITH - I am hoping that MR BK's recording of FOLLIES is my ticket to understanding the show - or at least liking it a little more.  I think I have all of the Midnite Movie series DVD's......I enjoy most of them.....

DR JOHN G I hope you enjoy Miss June Kenney in her defining role in ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE......

I've been listening to BBC broadcasts of CANDIDE this morning: 2005, with Michael Slattery and my friends Varla Huhtanen and Kim Criswee, and the 2007 Edinburgh Festival broadcast with Matthew Polenzani and Laura Aikin. Both concerts star Thomas Allen as Dr Pangloss and Martin, the Streetcleaner. I prefer the 2005, not just because of Kim and Carla but I think the conductor is better. Then I listened to part of a live performance from 2007 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, with Brandon Jovanovich and Laura Aikin. The Italian narriation is a bit wearing, though. I think the video clips might be more fun:

Sorry for the Cinemascope! I hate it when others do it, and I'm too retarded to figure out how to condense the information. I need to wtch someone else do it andape their process till it's ingrained.

So, I posted the Auto-da-fe, and links to other numbers are on the sidebar now.

Why are they doing a remake (sort of) of THE SOUND OF MUSIC?  Even as a live event on network (NBC) television, is there really a need?

Perhaps Meron and Zadan are trying to atone to God for what they did to THE MUSIC MAN with Matthew Broderick?

Thank you one and all for your thoughts and concerns regarding my fellow high school graduate.  It isn't the first time that I have thought about this as another danger of living alone.  Granted, chocking on food is not one of the Top Ten reasons for dying, but it is a scary thought.  I have only one apartment in my section of the building that I can reach in my wheelchair.

Perhaps I will have to give up eating any food at home.

I love most of the music from FOLLIES, but I can't say that I think the show itself is great.  Perhaps, had I seen the original production, like BK did, I would like the show more than I do.

DR TCB, when I was teaching college in 1971, the head of the department was going through a divorce and he was separated from his wife who lived ay their house with the children. He was a pig who'd knocked up one of his students. Anyway, that's not the story here. His wife choked to death on a sandwich duting lunch and one of the boys came home to find her dead on the kitchen floor.

For years I have worried about a similar death.

The original was amazing. The youtube clips only suggest how great it was, but the transformation from a ruined theatre to Loveland was one of the great theatrical moments, and there was nothing so spectacular or equal to it in the last revival.

I have that one but haven't watched it.

BTW, I'm a member of Disney Movie Club.  Joined a few years ago to get a couple of things that were otherwise unavailable, such as a couple of Walt Disney Treasures, and a few of the exclusive titles like THE SWORD AND THE ROSE that you posted about earlier.  I don't have that one, but if you want it, I'd be happy to order it.  Unless there are several things right off the bat that you KNOW you want from them, it is NOT worth joining.

Found it.  $9.98 plus shipping.  Let me know if you want it.  Actually, maybe I'll get one for myself.

BlueGobo's new clip is of Lotte Lenya singing "Green Up Time," which is a lot of fun, not the least because the singers in this 1960s show include an interracial couple who actual touch.

Thank you for the offer. I'm happy to know it's on DVD at last.

I'm enjoying the ROBIN HOOD. I had forgotten Martita Hunt is in it as Eleanor of Aquitaine. I love her.

When it was released in 1952, I was to go with a group of friends to see it, and I became sick and missed it. I didn't see it until later when it showed up on the Disney tv program. I don't believe the studio ever released it to theatres again, which was very stupid of them. I've never seen it in the theatre, and it llooks as though Disney needs to spruce it up, rev up the color and release it again.  The VHS color on SWORD AND THE ROSE looked quiye good. Perhaps I should look for the VHS release of ROBIN HOOD?

Very interesting!  The weather is much nicer today than yesterday.  Today it is sunny, a little windy, but still sunny.  And yet there are a lot less people heading for the Taste of Tacoma than yesterday.

I see that it's available from various Amazon marketplace sellers at $20

Just finished the first draft of the Follies liner notes.  I'm sure there will be much finessing, and then, as a courtesy, I'll send them to my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, just for fact-checking.

I loved ROBIN HOOD! I didn't realize that Ken Annakin, who directed it and THE SWORD AND THE ROSE, also directed THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES.  I liked the screenplay by Laurence Edward Watkin, author of the novel ON BORROWED TIME. The cast was wonderful. especially Peter Finch as the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham who gets shafted at every wicked thing he and Prince John attempt to pull off. It has enough wit and adventure to keep everyone happy and just enough romance and nudity for a 12 year-old girl like DR MBarnum to swoon over and make naughty drawings in their diaries.

Now I have to watch the Errol Flynn version again.

I think I will now watch ROB ROY, the third in the Disney series of British adventures, with Richard Todd and Glynis Johns. For all I know, it too is a Ken Annakin movie. Since reading Sir Walter Scott is a nearly impossible task - has anyone read a Scott novel? - I have no idea what the story is about. Tsuris in Scotland, I believe.

Yesterday in the mail, I received a package.  It was the six Clementi Sonatina's in two piano form.  Basically, piano 1 plays the original Sonatina, and piano two plays something that goes along with it. I remember playing a few of these in high school.  So, thanks to the sequencer on my keyboard, I'm able to record both parts and BINGO, piano duet.  I've been futzing with some of these for an hour or so, and they are fun.  I'm hoping to work these up and record them.  My first CD - "Playing with Myself"  ... It should sell, for the title alone.

Looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight after a very restless night in Lima - 'night!

Did she reach in her pocket and silence it? The old ladies don't know how to silence their phones. I have shown a few afterwards.

It wasn't possible as it was in her pants pocket and she was wearing the AM robes  whicxh don not allow access to your pants pockets

We've had them go off before, but this was during communion. Pretty hard to ignore.

So after grocery shopping I brought Mom home and  as I was heading  home  HUGE flash went across the sky and a clap of thunder shook the ground and the rain came down so hard and heavy I could not see the hood of my car through the my windshield.

We have had elderly ladies take them out of their purses, look at them, get their walkers, and walk s-l-o-w-l-y out to the lobby, phones still ringing, to answer them.

I do, too. As much as don't care for cellphones, I know they will go off at the least likely of times. And thankfully, forgiveness is a great part of what services are all about, right?

We made "Lemon Mistake" once. Forgot the sugar.

I cut up a large Vidalia onion into a heavy skillet - sliced  about a pound of large white  mushrooms, peeled several zucchini and cut them  into large chunks, drizzled it with olive oil , squeezed a lemon into it, covered it  and put the skillet on the barbeque side burner on low and preheated the grill

meanwhile I had three chicken breasts marinading in fresh lemon juice , garlic, and a  little white cooking wine

Once  the onions started getting getting nice and soft and brown I turned off the side burner and put the chicken breasts on the grill ( at around 400 degrees)  until they were brown on one side, then flipped them till the other side was brown

then I added half a jar of roasted red peppers into the vegetables and some white cooking wine, threw the beasts in there , covered the skillet and turn ed the burner back on and cooked it until the breasts were cooked through  and then dropped about a tablespoon of butter on top and turned burner off again - as soon as the butter was melted
I gave it a quick stir and served

I made Rare Key Lime Pie once.  Forgot to bake it.

Used a recipe from a post card that mentioned everything except the oven part.  I was young and knew nothing.  Oh wait, you already figured out that last part.

I didn't make a "starch "to go with it - no potato or rice and since Vixdad and the Vixter don;t eat Pasta or noodles I just dumped the veggie mixture onthe plate with the chicken breast on top

It actually was pretty good and both Vixdad (who ate it hot off the grill) and the Vixter  ( who got hers warmed up when she got home from work) enjoyed it

Very interesting!  The weather is much nicer today than yesterday.  Today it is sunny, a little windy, but still sunny.  And yet there are a lot less people heading for the Taste of Tacoma than yesterday.

I was at my parents' house all day today.  My cousin and his wife and my aunt are visiting.  We sat outside and ate and then played Phase 10.  I think I have a bit of a sunburn...fortunately, it's not a bad one.

BlueGobo's new clip is of Lotte Lenya singing "Green Up Time," which is a lot of fun, not the least because the singers in this 1960s show include an interracial couple who actual touch.

That was pretty cool!

Just finished the first draft of the Follies liner notes.  I'm sure there will be much finessing, and then, as a courtesy, I'll send them to my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, just for fact-checking.

I don't suppose that there'd be any possibility of signed booklets, would there?

:)

Today on PBS, they showed the Met's broadcast (which I saw in a theater) of Phillip Glass' "Satyagraha."  I told my dad and cousin about it today when I was at my parents' house and my dad was interested in getting a copy.  He loves history and is intrigued about a minimalist opera about Gandhi.

The show was fantastic - everyone did great and the two singers I had to work with most really came through and were stellar.  And I have to say that Shelly and I killed with I Remember it Well.  One huge laugh after another and we should do an act together.
