Yesterday was hot and it's supposed to be hot today.

We may be going to a pool, depends on what's happening with a friend's sister.

If we're not at a pool, I'm stayin' in!!!

Morning all!   We had a couple of good thunder boomers and some big flashes of lighting.  I didn't realize there was a storm around until that first flash when I was posting.

BK asked about hats.  I just bought 2 but they are because of the sun and I will wear one for yard work and one when going to something out doors.   I wore one to the medieval fair not that long ago.

I've told several people about us and invited them to post here.  I guess they just want to use Facebook.  There are people from work and old friends who I've found though using it.
I talk to Joseph there and Jason Carter (who is very nice,  approachable and fun)  as well.

Funny thing though, we can be on the board and I've seen fifty or more lurkers.  Who are these people and why don't they step from the shadows to join us?  They must know we don't bite and always like to make new friends. :)  Please, post with us!

Have a wonder filled day!   Vibes to all!  TGIF!

Last night's run thru was actually much better than I expected it to be.....first night with the lights, so that was a bit rough - but it should be better tonight.

Tonight our photographer is taking the production photos.

AND of course it's another expected 100 degree day.

Good morning, all.  Leaving for home and hearth soon.  Though, trust me, I'm not using the hearth in this weather.

TOD:

CD - SHOW BOAT (McGlinn), thanks to DR Elmore talking about the movie versions, and I hadn't heard or seen it in a while so I needed a fix.  Listened straight through on the way up here yesterday.

Also had a hankering for some CAROUSEL, so I've got the 1994 Lincoln Center and London cast CDs with me, which is all I have on CD.

Speaking of SHOW BOAT...
At the risk of getting DR Elmore's hopes up only to dash them to smithereens...
I have some good news and some bad news.

The Good:  I  have both the complete laserdisc set, and Criterion's release of the 1936 with its own extras including a commentary by Miles Kreuger.  They should all still be in perfect condition.

The Bad:  My DVD recorder recently started getting temperamental with the DL (dual layer) DVDs that are the lifeblood of a project like this.  I might have simply had a few bad ones, but I need to order more and work with it a bit.  These machines tend to be fussy anyway, and I had just moved it into a new setup.  If I can get it all working again, I'll see about getting these (cough--ahem) backed up.  But it will be a few weeks before I'm able to sit down to that.

Also, if I'm remembering right, the 1951 version on laser at least includes a good stereo soundtrack and a commentary by director George Sidney which might be of some interest.

Good morning, all! I slept late. My day is a slow one: laundry, which I musty begin; vacuuming and tidying; BALLET BALLADS proofreading. So, I slept late.

DR JRand61, there are a lot of other clips from ONE MAN; the British production was shown in movie theatres. It would be great if they released a DVD . I did order a copy of the script and the CD of the band last night.

DR ChasSmith, you had my heart fluttering like a wild thing for a moment. I really detest the 1950s version of SHOW BOAT intensely: listening to the Rhino soundtrack can have me in fits after the first track, which is usually when I turn it off. I generally hate the rescoring of Broadway shows for the MGM orchestra; Salinger and his team are good and theband plays well, but everything is so huge and hyper-inflated. It's never bothered me on soundtracks of film musicals like GIGI or SEVEN BRIDES FOr SEVEN BROTHERS, but I think the only Broadway to movie soundtracks I love are KISMET and  THE MUSIC MAN.

As to the McGlinn recording on 3 CDs, it's one of my proudest achievements to have been apart of it, although I believe its success was the beginning of McGlinn's descent into complete madness and megalomania. He was always difficult and a social misfit with stunted adolescent problems, but the huge success of SHOW BOAT turned him into an unhappier and uglier person altogether.  It will all be in the memoirs.

So, more coffee and laundry.

TOD:
DVD:  BONES Season 6, whatever else is sitting there
CD:  ONCE: THE MUSICAL, Guy Haines, Jacques Offenbach
   VCR: Oy!

There are some stories I don't tell here,  but are certainly wrth being made known. I've wrked with some of the best and some of the worst. It's the middling worst I bitch about here.

No. A new publication.

We need a membership drive. The Kritzerland site gets visited by zillions, one of the reasons being Peter Filichia's column, and this site gets hit on daily by tons of lurkers, several of whom I know are daily readers from comments I occasionally get about things I post, and a few I suspect end up here by googling some topic or name and get directed here. So, how do we convince these regular lurkers to join the insanity?

bk, I think we are all looking forward to the Follies re-release.  However, some of us don't have the ear that you do and might not notice the work you've done on the old masters.  Is it possible that maybe you could have clips of the original and then the same clips from the re-mastered version so people can hear the actual difference?  Maybe put it on the website or something?  I don't know, it's just a thought.

Been on and off, around and about, much to catch up on.

I'd been planning to get to the D.C. environs at some point in July to spend some quality time with friends and family there, but that had to be put on hold of course because their lives have been on major hold due to the effects of the power outages there.   So I won't have my cheap mini-vacation, but on the bright side, more time to catch up on the backlog of what I've missed.  :)

TOD - I'm now listening to audiobooks that I download from my former employer to my iPhone.  The selection is somewhat limited, so I listen to things that are a bit of a "stretch" for me.  Currently, it's Kathy Reichs' VIRALS, a novel about Temperance Brennan's great-niece, narrated by Cristin Millioti, the girl from ONCE.

My office team and I were stunned yesterday to learn of the death of a guy who worked with us as a consultant a few years ago.  He was shot and killed on the street in Philly late last Sunday night, probably the victim of a robbery.  He was only 32.  He loved the city and had bought, gutted and renovated a house that he turned into a showplace.  He loved music and was always introducing me to new bands and recordings.  What I remember most about him was that though he was on the shy side, he didn't let that get in his way when meeting people or doing a professional presentation.  He was really a sweet guy who didn't deserve to die so young and in this manner.

I'm up, I'm up - got up at nine-thirty, then stayed in bed for another hour.  I didn't get to sleep until two last night.  I was in bed by 12:45 but we had a helicopter show that was so annoying I'm sure no one in the neighborhood could sleep.  I looked to see if they were chasing some hoodlum but could find nothing.  I tried to fall asleep but it was useless, so an hour later I sat up and started playing on the bedside iPad - the MINUTE I did that, the helicopters were gone and we had blessed silence.  Unfortunately, I was also fully awake.  I fell asleep about fifteen minutes later.

How many volumes are you considering for these memoirs?
There's one volume devoted to the video collection. Oy!

I guess I can count on selling at least three copies, then: one to you, Barnum, and TCB!

I don't even know what a dual-layer DVD is.

I don't know the specifics, but essentially dual-layer DVDs can hold twice as much info as regular DVDs.

Most movies that run over 2 hours (?) are dual layer.  That's why you often see a slight pause when the player switches to the 2nd layer.

The discs that seem to cause the most problems are the two-sided dual layer discs.

Back home.  With just time to relax a bit before getting ready to go to a party that I really could do without going to.  But go to it I must.

My recorder specifically handles dual-layer; i.e., until the day it doesn't, and I really hope that day hasn't arrived.  It's like with tape -- you want to record at highest possible speed for quality, so you want to use the highest capacity discs in order to fit things on there decently.

Had some bacon and eggs and picked up a small package.  I'm now trying to do damage control - supposedly my helper shipped out a book to the NY Daily News critic - overnighted on Monday.  Of course, she's out of town right now and unfortunately she shipped it overnight at our UPS Store, which seems to have absolutely no record of the shipment.  The helper is quite definite that she was there at exactly two pm on Monday, saw the gal put the book in an overnight envelope and type the info into the computer.  She said it was charged to my house account.  There is no charge to the account on Monday and no record of the package being shipped.  Obviously someone has screwed up and I tend to trust my helper more than the people at the UPS Store.  The helper swears she has the receipt in her car and is trying to get her roommates to go find it so I at least have a tracking number.  Meanwhile, I've called the guy and left a message at his office about where to send a new package - I can get it to him tomorrow if he gets back to me in time, otherwise it will have to be on Monday.

Off in a bit to First Friday, the monthly walkabout that's supposed to celebrate artists but usually ends up being a food and beer fest. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Oy vey! indeed. I think I have to fnd a new executor for my will. My "best" freind is no longer in my social circle these days, and I think I need to appoint someone else. This means a new will and all that crap.

I may ask my brother Randy, but I don't think he relishes spending time in Manhattan to deal with my life. Maybe my adopted son Joshie? I hate this nonsense, but I don't think I'll be keeping things as they stand.

Here's what we have to deal with sometimes:  A guy in Sylmar CA orders a copy of The Good Old Bad Old Days on June 20.  We ship it to the address provided.  Today he opens a paypal claim stating we sent it to his OLD address and how dare we since paypal has had his NEW address on file forever.  I respond and ask him why he felt it necessary to open a claim rather than e-mail us.  I ask him how he KNOWS the package was sent to his old address.  I tell him maybe we've got his old address in the computer and the helper inadvertently sent it there - pilot error and all that.  I ask him to close the dispute and e-mail me and tell him we'll get it to the right address.

I then actually look at his invoice.  Guess what?  WRONG ADDRESS.  Oops.  I write him back telling him he owes us an apology and that the shipment to the wrong address is HIS problem not ours.  Again, I ask him to close the dispute and e-mail me to work it out.  Of course, those who are quick to open disputes are slow as molasses to respond, so I called paypal and am escalating it to a claim - that way as soon as the helper gets me our tracking info I can confirm delivery to the address on the invoice and they will immediately put the money back into our account.  Then, when Mr. Stupid e-mails us he can explain how he knew we'd sent it to the wrong address, and also tell us that IF he knew why he hasn't gone to collect the CD, since it's about ten minutes from his NEW address.  One way or the other, we'll at least have our money back.

Got the tracking info and proof of delivery, called Paypal back, escalated to claim, they instantly put the money back in my account, and they are now out of it - he can no longer do anything with them about this transaction.  So, he'll actually have to behave like a human being and e-mail us.  To that end, I sent him an e-mail from the Kritzerland address.

I guess when you catch someone who really did the wrong thing they get embarrassed and therefore act like jerks.

Until later!

Just heard the mix of Losing My Mind - just fantastic and I was a puddle of mush because there has never been a vocal to better what Dorothy Collins does on this song.  And wonder of wonder, a little piano part that was completely buried in the original mix.  Not any more, baby.

I am finding to my surprise as I occasionally A/B our mixes with the performances on the new recording (which is AWFUL-sounding - dead and dry and ugly) that Mr. Tunick has made all sorts of little adjustments to the orchestration and few for the better.

Welcome seventy-one GUESTS.  Any of you read Peter Filicia's column today - apparently no one here has.  Come on out of the woodwork and join our merry band of miscreants.

I read Mr. Filichia today. Loved hearing what Darcie Roberts was up to. I saw her in "Busker Alley." Twice.

Back from an egg roll eating contest. Not a pretty sight.

Welcome back, Jane.

I saw her in Busker Alley once - which was enough :)  Not her - the show.

How did we go from seventy GUESTS to twelve GUESTS?  We haven't been down to twelve GUESTS in over a year.  Perhaps the thought of coming out of the woodwork scared everyone away.  Or perhaps the lack of new postings today bored everyone to tears.

Back from "Spiderman" - good movie.  In many ways, better than the Toby Maguire film.

I want to see it...however, there are other movies that I want to see first.

Tomorrow is going to be a day of me not doing much of anything. :) My mom, my aunt, my niece and Mona, a friend of my mom's, are all going to spend the day at Mount Rainier.

I wasn't asked if I wanted to go.  I haven't been in many years, but I don't think I would've wanted to go anyway...especially so soon after getting a sun burn last week that's not completely healed, yet.

I will stay home, watch some TV and burn some DVDs...such as "Show Boat" and the 2012 Tony Awards.

I'll also probably watch/record/burn the laserdisc version of "1776."  I've actually been wanting to do that for quite some time.
