Well, you've read the notes, the notes were quite Swedish, and now it is time for you to post until the Swedish cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  languages spoken other than English...none. :-\

My mom is German, but she never taught us to speak it and I never took a foreign language in high school.  I did take one quarter of Spanish in college, but that's it.

When I was going to Western Washington University (and was planning on becoming a choir teacher), I took a class on how to pronounce foreign languages, so that I would at least sound like I knew what I was singing. ;)

I gotta tell you.  Part of the problem of arising at noon, is that at one in the morning you're just starting to get tired again.

Time for bed.  I'm actually taking today off.  It's my aunt's last full day and I'm going to spend it with her and the rest of the family.  She leaves on Tuesday to go back to California.  Fortunately, we're not meeting at my parents' until 2:00 pm, or so...so I get to sleep in.  I love it when that happens. :D

Good night!

Morning all!  Have to make this quick because I've decided to start walking again so I don't have the time I did to post in the morning.  I walked a mile today.  I figure I will work my way back up.  I really do need to get this weight off.  I look horrible.

I can sing in a couple languages but I really don't speak anything fluently.  A few words here and there in German, French, Latin, Spanish and maybe one or two in Russian.  Oh and Klingon.  That's a language too! :)

We shall see.

Good morning, all! I slept well, I think, but there were a lot of dreams about the Appalachian Christmas show. Go figure.

First thing this morning, i am back to the McGlinnventory to ship these orchestra parts to Dublin. I have to raise hell with the mail room for not emailing the last trcking numbers to our paralegal on Thursday or Friday. It's currently 74 and the weather site predicts a high of 85 today.

After I ship, I will head up to Toyland for a bit and then catch a bus home. I've got BALLET BALLADS begun, but it's a lot of music to proof. I may attend a wedding party tonight, but it's all the way down by City Hall, and everything depends on how the day goes.

TOD: I've studied German, Spanish and French, but I have forgotten a lot of all three because I don't use any of them enough. I have picked up some Italian and Portuguese along the way. I could only must about three words of Greek (the words for please, thank you and wine).

My facility for speaking another language seems to increase with alcohol intake.  ;)

For all you Jessie Matthews fans:

Finally, one of her movies is becoming available on American DVD.

It's FIRST A GIRL, which served as the basis for Blake Edward's VICTOR/VICTORIA.  My wife and I watched it last night.

It's a fun movie with some enjoyable, albeit forgettable, songs.  Dance numbers are Busby Berkeley light.

Matthews is a real charmer, and her husband (doing the Robert Preston role straight), is also excellent.

The 1935 movie has been nicely restored and looks great.

TOD:  I have language guilt.  I'm pretty fluent in my native English, and through the wonderful world of music I've gotten familiar with lots and words and phrases, but I only ever studied German.  I think I got into my third year before giving it up for some reason, and I regret that.  Nowadays I most wish I knew French, and I daydream about just diving into it sometime and seeing how far I could get with.

In the third or fourth grade in Columbus (the one in the Buckeye State) my class was taught some beginning words and phrases of French.  The only reason I have any memory of it at all is that several of us were taken down to one of the TV studios to be shown off on some local daily show as learning French.  My word to show off was "hand" - "main".

In junior high school in Fort Lauderdale we were taught Spanish for a semester or maybe a year.  I remember a few textbook phrases, but probably picked up more Spanish living in L.A. later.

I've only been exposed to Swedish through Bergman films and a couple of contemporary films like INSOMNIA.  I remember starting to recognize certain bits after several of the Bergmans, but couldn't tell you any of it now, so I'm hanging on to the newly learned TACK, BRA, and PUSS PUSS for dear life.

The only other Swedish I know is hut sut rallson on the rillera and a bralla bralla suet.

The Rallson is a Swedish town, the rillera is a stream.  The bralla is a boy and girl.  The hut sut is their dream.  I don't know what the tack the suet is.

The office next door to our has been vacant since I first started working here over two years ago.  About two months ago, workers have been busy renovating it, reconstructing walls and installing a stair case between this floor and the one beneath.  There was a mad rush to finish during the past two weeks and all I can say is that the completed reception area that is on view on our floor looks like a tacky airport waiting area.  If I can sneak a few pics later on today, I'll post them here.

This play may be about Presidents and elections, but it makes no political statement whatsoever.  It's just fun.

It's also the (extended) book of the musical that I worked on with BK.

Monday morning greetings!  I slept much better last night and woke up in time to tune into GOOD MORNING, AMERICA for their "coverage" of the World Choir Games in Cincinnati.  There were brief cut-ins at 8 and 8:30 live from Fountain Square, but it was a lot of build-up for not much substance.  Now I remember why I stopped watching the early morning network shows - superficial coverage and too many commercials.

DR Ginny, the next time - although why you'd want to go is beyond me! - you go to the dying Middletown Mall, would you see if that men's clothing shop is still there and if they have any more of my caps? The manufacturer is Broners. The style is the O'Malley.

Thank you, dear!

Nice.  I've been a PC user since the beginning of time, but have been thinking very seriously for the past several months that when it comes time to buy a new computer, I will cross over to the other side.  Looking at the prices causes some wavering in that conviction, but really, I think it needs to be done.

TOD - I started Spanish in 9th grade, took it all through high school, and placed into the second semester of second year college Spanish as a freshman.  Then, with some room in my senior year schedule, I took one year of college French.  Didn't keep up with either and I've lost most of both languages, except for words here and there.  When we were in France last fall, I found myself remembering the Spanish words for things I wanted to say in French!

Craig could use some traveling vibes today.  His first flight has been delayed, hopefully not too long so he can catch his connection.

He is headed to Maryland to take a class he hasn't even been able to register for due to the major power outages and the holiday & weekend.  This has been the only class out of the five he needed to take this summer that he could find available.

At least he was able to set up his introduction to Johns Hopkins while he is there and will be looking for a place to live.

American English (fluent)
British English (tolerably fluent)
French (I remember my verbs...and given an opportunity, can piece together the gist of what is being said)
Italian (the saltier it is, the better I understand it and can respond in kind)
Greek (woefully at a loss, but very much in love with it and was learning it when I lived in Athens).

German:  Have always wanted to learn it.

A Facebook  comment from Varla Jean Merman, love child of Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine, on the death of her  father:

Thank you all for your kind words. The loss of a parent is devastating, and my love for him was unrestrained. He was a quiet man, but his lawyers often conveyed his true feelings for me, and at least reassured me that he did know I was out there, especially when I came within 400 feet of him.

DR JohnG. I had meant to thank you for the nice comments about the Herbert Songs. I don't know if anyne else on HHW has heard the collection or even liked it much, but we could sure use a positive review on Amazon. Both reviews posted there seem negative to middling to me, much like Suskin's for Playbill, generally dismissive. One says the first disc is great and the material gets worse and the other says (s)he could get six friends and a bottle of wine together and produce something similar, which is an insukt to most of the singers we cast. I know there are clinkers in 102 numbers, but I feel there are listeners happier with the recording than these two critics.

Sure, there are a couple of songs that are not as wonderful as others, but the point of a collection is to show everything. I have only made it through about two and a half of the discs (mostly starting one and not having the time to listen to all of it.). What I particularly enjoy is the wistful feeling a lot of the music has. I had played some George M. Cohan last week because of the Fourth, and there is a definite musical heritage that both express that, well, deserves to be heard and preserved. The singers are gorgeous. I will also say I was a little worried that I would miss a full orchestral sound, but I don't. The music and the singers are that good. Zachary Strains (is that his name?) is the one newcomer so far who has stood out for me alongside the more familiar, to me, voices of Rebecca Luker and Ron Raines.

So, yes, I will try to go on there and post a review when I have finished. I owe BK a rave, too, for "Album Produced By ..."

Watched all four of the films on the TCM/Universal DVD set WOMEN IN DANGER.

It was wonderful to finally see FEMALE ON THE BEACH again. Joan Crawford was at her sneering best and Jeff Chandler was dreamy. Natalie Shafer and Jan Sterling were both excellent, as well.

My only disappointment with the set was the print used for THE UNGUARDED MOMENT, a film that is one of my all time favorites. The print was not very good at all and it was not even anamphorphically enhanced for wide screen TVs!! THE PRICE OF FEAR, the only other widescreen film on the set, was anamporphic, but not THE UNGUARDED MOMENT.

I am guessing that because the print was not very sharp, rather fuzzy in fact, that it would look even more ghastly blown up to fit a wide screen tv, so they didn't bother. Oh well, after awhile I didn't notice and just enjoyed the film. Edward Andrews is by far one of the creepiest actors I have ever seen. George Nader and Esther Williams had very good chemisty, I thought, and John Saxon showed what a good actor he was/is.

I am very happy that these films were finally released on DVD, and I have heard through the grapevine that more vintage Universal and Universal-International stuff is in the works over the next year or so, including more sci-fi and horror films.

I sent all the singers an email saying "if your friends are liking your work, tell them to post a good review." I hate being a shill. I don't think we'll be sending EILEEN to Suskin. It would be a waste of money and time.

My grandmother (on my Dad's side) was Norwegian.  The older she got and longer she had been in America, the heavier her accent.  She would often slip into speaking Norwegian with either my dad or one of my aunts, usually if she didn't want us to know what she was saying.  My sister and I were taught to call her Mormor, which was actually incorrect.  Mormor is actually the mother's mother.  We should have called her farmor (father's mother), but hey, there were six of them vs. only the two of us.

I actually wish that I had learnt more Spanish. So many vintage Mexican films are out on DVD now, but without subtitles. Knowing Spanish would make it easier for me to understand and enjoy these films.

The orchestra parts are mailed. I believe I shall go to Tekserve and look at MacBooks, perhaps purchase one.

Nice.  I've been a PC user since the beginning of time, but have been thinking very seriously for the past several months that when it comes time to buy a new computer, I will cross over to the other side.  Looking at the prices causes some wavering in that conviction, but really, I think it needs to be done.

I am with you on the price, Chas.  I was thinking of getting a Mac Notebook, but it seem like the price is much higher than the similar Windows laptop.  That seems to be the only stumbling block at the moment; other than the fact that I have never even tried to use a Mac.

How long will Craig have to be there?

I found this casserole recipe on line and decided it sounded yummy (and simple) enough to try.  First I was going to make it yesterday, and then I considered making it today.  Now, I am not sure if I will make it, at all.  It is an easy throw together recipe, but it requires me to boil noodles and to fry hamburger.  I am worried about trying to do either while I am still in a wheelchair.  I am not sure how to get the boiling noodles to the sink to drain, and I am nervous about knocking over the fry pan.

Thank you.  I never asked how he was getting from the airport to his friend's house.  Once there they are lending him a car to use.

We took Yogi for a walk to the mailbox.  We need to get out earlier in the morning to take him on a longer walk.  It was hot out there.

I have to tell you all about what happened today.

You know I have a really bad boss.  Well, I'm trying my very best to get the heck out of Dodge even if I have to take a step down.  I put in for a Clerk 3 (data) position and that meant I had to take a data entry test.

I hate tests but I took the time to listen to Joseph's Confidence track before I went down to Civil Service on my lunch hour.  I had Joseph's voice ringing in my head--"You are a confident person.  Confidence! Confidence!"  and you know, I went in, had no butterflies or that sick feeling I always get when I'm being tested on any thing and out of the 40 entries you had to do in the time limit, I got 39.  With ZERO errors!  The guy who gave the test said that was very good.  It's a closed position meaning it is only available to folks who already work for county and I am hoping against hope that I get called for an interview.  :)

I'm thinking that sometimes you may have to take a step down or back to go forward.

I'm here, but have not stopped all day.  I finished another set of liner notes and got that off where it's going.  I got the composer's notes for Wallander, so that's all  complete now - he's such a nice and charming guy.  I had some lunch.  I'll be going to my engineer's house at seven-thirty.  I've done track list and road map for another project and will start on those notes, too.  I've never written five sets of liner notes in a week - it's interesting.  I assigned songs and got the singers mp3s via e-mail rather than burning CDRs.

DR Elmore, regarding your executor situation. Just have in your will that all your assets be liquidated into cash and put into my savings account. I will take care of it all for you, I promise. It is the least I can do for you, my friend.

The day I do that, I will declare myself insane and head to the nearest padded cell.

Ok, but remember to sign the will before declaring yourself insane, so that it will hold up in court.

the book was Independent People by Haldo Laxness.   I didn't have time and am getting close to the end of the Howard Fast Lavarette family saga (six books) so I didn't want to stop and read it.   No one got through the whole thing and no one really liked it.  It won a Nobel prize in the 50s.  I'm still planning to read it, but not just now.

Back from finessing the Follies mixes.  We actually didn't do that much to what he'd done - brought up two little brass things in the opening track, smoothed out and lowered two vocals that were a bit too loud and it sounds absolutely stunning.  We compared it to the old CD and there's no comparison and if people can't hear the difference they're deaf in at least one ear.  The ONLY problem is that One More Kiss, a song not included on the LP but added for the CD was not on the eight-track session tapes.  My fear is that they no longer have it, and that what was included on the CD was a rough mix they'd done back in the day.  I've e-mailed my guy at Capitol asking him to look for it, but I'm not holding out any hope at all.  So, I have a decision to make, which is do I include One More Kiss where it comes in the program sequence, where it will sound VERY different - I can help it a little in the mastering by brightening it up and giving it some level, but the mix is worse than any mixes on the old album, which is why I believe it was a rough mix - or I can include it at the end as a bonus track.  I have to give it serious thoughts, but would like to hear opinions.

Good night!

Well, had a great last day with my aunt.  We had spaghetti dinner and played Qwerkle.  I won a couple of times. :)

I said goodbye, since she's leaving in the morning and there won't be time to see her.  A good time was had by all! ;D

I think something is being planned (not exactly a protest), but a way that people can show support for our LGBT employees...such as myself.  But not an out-and-out protest.  It turns out that OSC is first cousins with our HR director (who, I think, shares certain opinions).

I certainly enjoyed it!

It would be nice to have it in show order, but I understand putting it at the end because of the sound...but if you explain it in the liner notes, I think more people would prefer in show order.
