Title: FOLLIES
Post by: bk on July 10, 2012, 01:35:13 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Follies, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently seeing the Cow Follies, a variety show about cud.

And the word of the day is: ECTOPIC!

The only time I have ever heard the word "ectopic" was in Rosemary's Baby, spoken by Dr. Saperstein.

Hi all and good morning!

Vibes for DS Craig that he makes his class today!

To answer your question DR Jane, I wouldn't lose my seniority or vacation/sick time.  I might take a hit in pay but it is also possible that since I'm not even to mid point (thanks to the raise freeze we have suffered this past FIVE years) they may decide to keep me at my current level.  It's possible because the job is just one step/level down from my current position.  I just have to cross my fingers that it happens.

Thank you to everyone who wished me luck.

Vibes and a wonderful day to everyone!

Good morning, all! I slept poorly and I will most likely fall into a coma at Toyland today. I have to be there early to meet the electrician who is checking all of the circuits in the space. WhilebI am there, I will print a third copy of the Act One full score for DEAREST ENEMY: the first was comletely missing No 4, and yesteday I got an email from David telling me that his second copy is missing the first 39 pages of the opening chorus! The third time is proverbially the charmer, so we'll see!

While i am at Toyland, I need to prepare a list of office vendors and their monthly costs, so we can set them up. In addition, I will call NYU and Columbia about their intern programs, so I can get the office a couple of interns to deal with organizing, proofreading, research, and a lot of mundane tasks. I also need to call Time Warner about Wi-Fi.

I am hoping that today, as well, I can get back to Tekserve to purchase an adaptor for my LaCie external hard drive so I can plug it into my new MacBook.  This depends on when the electrician finishes.

TOD:

The list changes with time.

When I was a kid, I played "A Little Night Music" so often I wore out my first copy. The same with  "On the Twentieth Century," which, on vinyl, has my vote for the best sound. A few other candidates that got played quite a lot:

Make a Wish
The Good Companions
Grand Hotel
I Can Get It for You Wholesale
Ragtime, the concept album
Dreamgirls
Nine
Promises, Promises
The first side of Sugar

My two cents on "One More Kiss": The show's fans know the history of its not having been included on the original vinyl album. With  the release of the CD and the song's inclusion, it was presented in order with, as I recall, a footnote about the aural quality. To make yours different, I would include it at the end with a similar footnote, because as you state on the cover, this is the remixed and remastered recording, but "One More Kiss" won't be.

Late last night I knew I would fall asleep watching something, but I definitely wanted to have something on, so I chose a Midnite Movies DVD for which I'd never seen the movies at all:

COUNT YORGA, VAMPIRE and RETURN OF COUNT YORGA.

I had no idea what to expect, and what I got seemed in my drowsy state like something fairly unusual in terms of pacing and atmosphere.  I was delighted to see a few 1970 L.A. location shots, but dozed through the last half of the first, then dutifully got up and turned the flipper disc over and started the second, and missed even more of that one.  But little bits of them would work their way into dreams, so the whole thing was rather surreal, and the second film seemed to go on forever.  I even checked the running time to see if it hadn't actually lasted three or four hours.  So, a bizarre night on the TV couch.  It'll be interesting to watch these in the cold light of day to see what the heck actually goes on.

I would have to echo DR John G. and say that the original A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is still, after all these years, my favorite recording.  Not only because it was my first Sondheim OCR, but because of the sheer (for lack of a better word) intelligence of the score.  The interplay throughout between the surprising and humorous rhymes and rhythms of the lyrics and the waltz variations that vary from playful to challenging demand that you pay attention and experience every number.  Like listening to Mozart, I feel smarter after listenting to this recording.

Aurally, it's I think it's just about perfect (though I think "Now/Soon/Later" and the ending of "A Weekend In The Country" are a bit muddy.)  I'm not crazy about the extended "Night Waltz" on the CD rerelease--the mid section sounds like they just looped through twice--there's no variation.  But I do love the inclusion of Night Waltz II--it's one of my favorite parts of the recording now.

Although I did do one final thing last night.  One actor who is an irritant......full of suggestions for others.... interrupted my notes last night to ask a question.

In case you don't know the play - the last few moments of the play, the residents of the Cloisters go into a dream state....Jeffrey is playing the piano, Hannibal (the said actor) plays the violin after screeching the strings all through the play, a plain girl wears a beautiful dress, a mother who lost her child is embracing a real live child, and a woman who paints straight lines is painting a beautiful seascape.

Hannibal has the last line:  "Here is your song"  after which he scratches on the violin, there is a light change, and he joins Jeffrey who is already playing the piano.

Hannibal puts some tape over his strings - and he said last night:  "Can I have just a smidgen more time....I need to get the tape on the strings...."   Well he has never disguised it....even though the lights are down, the audience can see that he is doing something....and he always misses his cue anyway....so....I said:  "No.  I tell you what.  You have the tape on the violin when you come out.  You say the line and then we will do the light change.  No scratching on the strings at the end....."

I told the light operator, lights change when he says the line.....no extra music.  So he lost a bit of business for being a pain in the ass for the last six weeks.

Not yet sure on what I think is the worst sounding recording.

As much as I love listening to PIPPIN, I wish the score had been recorded as it was presented on stage.  I don't know if it was Motown or Phil Romone or Stephen Schwartz deciding to remove any sense of Fosse's staging but the OCR is not half as fun as it could have been.

DR JRand61, you might be right, but I believe the published script, as well as the recording, are the National Theatre British materials with new covers. I also can't tell if the show is closing on Sept 2 or if that's the date when the National Theatre players go back to London and, if the show continues, it's with American replacements.

It's a tough call, because there are many Broadway score recordings I've listened to multiple times, but it's "A Little Night Music" for me, too.  A close second might be "Dear World".  Then "Mack and Mabel", "Sweeney Todd", "Mame", "The Music Man", "Into the Woods" and "Follies."  "I Do, I Do" is also a runnerup.

I find the London cast recording of "A Little Night Music" a more revelatory listen as far as orchestrations go.  There is so much exquisite detail that comes through my speakers.  Sadly, I cannot listen to it often because of the mostly lackluster vocal performances of the leads.  Jean Simmons would have been perfectly fine had she had a better vocal co-star than Joss Ackland.

I have an odd "Rosemary's Baby" story for you, Bruce:

When I saw this film in the theater I was totally engrossed.  Unhappily, the ill-advised soda I bought upon entering the theater finally worked itself into my bladder and forced me to leave the theater for a relief break.  Late in the film, Rosemary and Roman were having a confrontation with Rosemary not wanting to believe what he was saying:  "You're in Dubrovnik, I can't hear you," she declared!  I puzzled this over for a very long time.  I couldn't understand what she meant about him being "in Dubrovnik."  For some reason, I imagined "Dubrovnik" must have been some evil curse of some kind.

I had never heard of Dubrovnik, you see, and the scene I had missed was the one in which he and Minnie pretended to be leaving on a trip to visit Dubrovnik.

For many years, thereafter, any time anyone said something to me that did not make any sense, I'd think "You're in Dubrovnik.  I can't hear you."  Once I finally saw "Rosemary's Baby" on home video, the problem was solved.  The light bulb was lit.  And the fun was, seemingly, done.

Still...I do get a kick out of thinking "You're in Dubrovnik.  I can't hear you" any time someone blathers on and on about something that doesn't interest me.

If anyone here has "thought about" buying "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (Or, How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours and 11 Minutes)" on Bolu ray disc, I can assure you it is worth every penny of its $29.95 cost.

The Blu ray is spectacular.  I know it didn't look this good when I saw a CinemaScope print in the theater during December 1965 (I actually saw it about five times that December).  This transfer was done from a 65mm negative, if I read the specs correctly.  It's absolutely stunning.  Great depth.

One obvious tank scene involves Gert Frobe dangling from his plane over the English Channel.  The blue sky is most noticeably a painted tank siding.  Never noticed that before on DVD or laserdisc.

It's a stunning film with a great Ron Goodwin score that is alternately heaps of fun and soaring magnificence.

Ditto!

In a period of 4 years, Richard and I made 3 moves/decisions that each had a negative impact on our income.  Each time, we gained something that was more important than the money we were giving up.  That was 25 years ago, give or take, and we've survived without having to become Walmart greeters in our retirement!

I have the "Magnificent Men" Blu-ray and it looks truly splendid.  I was going to enjoy a straight-through viewing tonight, but that might have to be postponed.

No idea which print I saw when it came out, and I believe I only saw it once.  I'm pretty sure I know which theater, so maybe I'll find a newspaper ad that will tell me.  I'm kind of a nut about recalling movies and theaters anyway, and it would just be fun to know.

In the movies, whenever a doctor is talking a patient into being a human guinea pig (to save their life), you never hear them say, "Oh, by the way, you have a 50 / 50 chance of getting a placebo.

I guess nobody would want to make a film about the person who got the placebo.

I can't remember if I even saw that one.  I just checked to see when it was released, and it wasn't till 1969, four years later.  I'd thought it wasn't long after "Magnificent Men".

Also "Magnificent Men" was released in June 1965 and "The Great Race" in July, and I'd been thinking of "The Great Race" as the film that kind of inspired the other one.  Crazy, man.

It apparently did inspire "Jalopies" four years later.  I see some comments to the effect that they might have used some footage from it, and Tony Curtis was in it.  But it was also directed by Ken Annakin and scored again by Ron Goodwin.  It must have been really imitative of both earlier films.

It's not as good as either of the two 1965 films.  BUT...it has a great title song that was sung by Jimmy Durante (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tEBXZjJfVQ)that assures it a memorable place in cinema history (if only for the song).  It also had wonderful titles by Ronald Searle who did the ones for TMMITFM!

I got soundtracks for DARING YOUNG MEN and JAUNTY JALOPIES several years apart.....and both for about fifty cents each.....new and sealed LP's......the title songs for both were most entertaining....and DARING YOUNG MEN had dialog intros into most of the songs which were very funny.

I saw both "Magnificent Men" and The Great Race" when they first opened. I enjoyed both but prefered "Great Race". The humour in "Magnificent Men" was too broad and slapstick for me and I find it quite tedious to watch now. I liked the film references throughout "Great Race" which also had, IMO the better cast.

Exactly my thoughts in reverse.  I have always found "The Great Race" pretty much of a bloat with Lemmon overdoing it and Curtis and Wood unable to sustain my interest.  The casting for "Those Magnificent Men.." wasn't "Hollywood" casting but had some of the finest character actors alive giving it their all.

Today my book group discussed REMARKABLE CREATURES by Tracy Chevalier (Girl With the Pearl Earring).  We all enjoyed the book very much.  Our only complaint about the book was that it didn't included drawings of the remarkable creatures.  The woman who hosted the meeting found them in a children's book.

This is an historical, science novel which takes place during Jane Austen's time.

Monday he has his orientation with Johns Hopkins at the Columbia campus.  He said the community college that offers one of the other co-requisite classes, without the need for a prerequisite, is nearby.  He will go in person to sign up for that class so any problems can be addressed on-site.  If that works out he will only have three more co-requisite classes to take vs four.

A woman that works here in my building had a job in one of the branches that was at a higher pay level than where she is now.  She deliberately took this (lower pay level) job because it was full-time, and what she had before was only part-time (24 hours a week, I think).  Getting full benefits more than made up for the loss in her base pay.

In the movies, whenever a doctor is talking a patient into being a human guinea pig (to save their life), you never hear them say, "Oh, by the way, you have a 50 / 50 chance of getting a placebo.

I guess nobody would want to make a film about the person who got the placebo.

Maybe not, but someone (several someones, actually) wrote a musical (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004P6V4AU/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=) about it. :D

Or maybe have Dame Edna come in and record a new version. :)

That would be cool. :D

Well folks, it seems I've done it again.  I just stepped in from the walk in clinic.  This time I had an "interesting' reaction to "something".  What I don't know.  My eyes are so swollen they are almost shut.  And while I assure you it looks far worse then it feels, It's not fun either.
The folks at the walk in clinic were great.  I think I scared the sh*t out of them when I walked in.  I just said I think I'm having some kind of reaction to something and after one look at my face, man did they spring into action.   One took me by arm and I was put on a gurney toot sweet while they checked my bp, temp, etc.  They kept asking if I felt my throat getting tight but I wasn't having any kind of breathing problem.
The doctor couldn't believe I drove myself there and wasn't sure I would be allowed to drive myself home but he had to.
I got a shot that hurt like the dickens (still hurts truth be told) and 3 prescriptions.
Anyway, I'm home, safe, going to take my contacts out here in a moment and take the pills I got.  Then I'm going to bed.  I was told not to lay flat but I don't do that anyway because of the sleep apnea.
What an exciting life I have.
No worries, I'm fine.  Just practicing my oriental look. :)

OMG DR Danise that sounds awful. I can't believe that you drove yourself either. That sounds very dangerous.

Hopefully your meds/shots will help. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've driven with very swollen eyes and it is a bit scary.  I feared they would completely close before I got home to take some Benadryl.  Fortunately they didn't and the drive wasn't as bad as I expected.  Unlike DR Danise only my eyes were effected and I knew the cause.

DR Danise, I guess they were asking if you felt your throat closing because that is common in allergic reactions. Did this happen this morning or tonight? Had you eaten something?

When I was young and often dealt with swelling due to food allergies my parent's never mentioned how dangerous my throat swelling was.  I'm glad they didn't, it was painful enough without being scared.

It was the allergist I worked for when I was 19 that was horrified when I told him about my food reactions.  I was kind of shocked when he told me I could die from them.

Anthony loved

The Art of Racing in the Rain (http://www.garthstein.com/arr/)

I'm really looking forward to reading it.  I finished the 6th book in Howard Fast's Series about the Lavette family.  It was wonderful

Right now he's reading

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (http://www.randomhouse.com/rhpg/guernsey/)

and loving it even more.

I'll read Guernsey after him. I may have to renew it before I finish. It's due July 21st.

I read this a few years ago -  I believe it was recommended to me by the much missed E & T DR td -- I greatly enjoyed it!!!
It's been sitting on my to-read end table for more than two years now. Maybe after graduation ...

I need to add it to my nook library

Glad to hear it. A friend of mine recommended it to me a couple of years ago, and I bought it.  Alas it has been sitting on my shelf since then.  I just noticed it the other day, so I guess it's time to pull it down and actually read it.

Then you can come to Iowa and go to Book Club with me!

Today has been difficult.  I lost my cool with the director of Dear Edwina Jr. kids were testing my patience, having a hard time letting things not "bug" me, and on top of all this, it was the first rehearsal for Legally Blonde.  I'm glad today is over.  I do feel like I'm Losing my Mind.  Am I going to love tomorrow??   I certainly hope so.

Well, I'm still an officer-at-large on the TAO board.  There was one upset...literally.  Our current secretary was not voted back.  I don't know what happened, but I certainly voted for him.  The results of the election (it was actually handled through surveymonkey.com) were announced and was the only one who wasn't re-elected.  He was taking notes and you could tell that he was a bit upset, but then he just finished taking notes about one topic, unplugged his laptop and said that he had to leave.  And then he left. :-\
