Well, you've read the notes, you know I must hurry along, and you know what you must do to keep the home fries burning.  To it, I say.

Welcome fourteen GUESTS!  We're talkin' about the FUTURE, Mr. Gits, the FUTURE.  We're talkin' about Gene Kelly.

I am, sad to say, not as familiar with John Huston's career as a director.  As an actor, I think his best work was in Chinatown.  Nasty, evil man, Noah Cross was.

His Noah Cross is one of the great screen acting jobs.  The FUTURE, Mr. Gits, the FUTURE.

If you don't know Mr. Huston as a director you have a lot of wonderful treats in store, including The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre for starters.

And add The Asphalt Jungle, and his very strange films of The Night of the Iguana and Reflections in a Golden Eye.

Favourite Huston movies: "The African Queen", "Key Largo", "The Maltese Falcon" and "Heaven Knows Mr Allison". There's a lot I like about "Moulin Rouge" too.

Best Gene Kelly dance number: "Our Love is Here to Stay," with Leslie Caron, from An American in Paris.  Done without the costumes and the flash and dazzle of the title number, putting Caron beside Kelly as he tells her he loves her in a way that surpasses words...This one dance summarizes the rest of the film (not to mention a raftfull of other movies).

ADDENDUM:  "Our Love is Here to Stay" reduces Kelly to his dancing essense, his most simple and basic.  It displays the ground upon which everything else he did was built.  "You Were Meant For Me," with Debbie Reynolds (Singin' in the Rain) comes close, but his dance with Caron is a more complete film moment.

I've seen African Queen, although it's been several years.  My problem is that I haven't seen enough of Huston's work as a director to compare and decide what I think is great and what isn't.  (I mean, let's face it, Annie does not count as a top-drawer flick, but I'm not going to judge his output based on that film.  It just wouldn't be sporting.)

I'm very curious, now, to find out how he handled The Dead.

Jane, I remember the Opera House very well.  Never went to the tower restaurant actually.

Fav John Huston directed:  Maltese Falcon (in my top five films); Key Largo (Eddie G. whispering to Lauren Bacall); The Unforgiven (with its strangely disembodied score); The Life & Times of Judge Roy Bean (wonderful essence of folklore...like someone sitting on a stump, whittling, spinning a yarn); The Man Who Would Be King (Colonialism last gasp)

Best Huston writing:  Juarez; High Sierra

Huston as an actor:  Chinatown; Wind & the Lion

Fav Gene Kelly dance numbers:  Singing in the Rain & Moses from Singing in the Rain; the roller skate number from It's Always Fair Weather; Nina & The Pirate Ballet from The Pirate; The newspaper & the squeaky board from Summer Stock.

Fell asleep -- and woke up. Here I am. Huston - haven't seen THE DEAD since it came out. But I saw it twice then and loved it. Will list other favorites tomorrow.
Gene Kelly - dancing with the mouse in ...is it Anchors Away? And SINGING IN THE RAIN, natch. MOre tomorrow on Kelly, too. Tomorrow is actually today.

Once again it's in the cards!  My best wishes to MR BK as we go "on location" at HHW....that sounds like that television show from the 1960's.....gosh I can't remember it's name....where the host took us to studios and movie sets and parties.....   8)

Ah......The Asphalt Jungle, The Man Who Would Be King, and The Maltese Falcon.  TMWWBK had been one of my favorite short stories, so I was very excited to see it done as a film....and I was not disappointed.  How could I be, with Houston directing Connery and Caine?

Acting wise....probably Sierra Madre and Myra Breckinridge.

Gene Kelly has never been a favorite of mine...sorry MBARNUM...but I do like the motorcycle number he does with Mitzi Gaynor in Les Girls.  And of all of his performances, I also really like his Noel Airman in Marjorie Morningstar.  All of Singing In The Rain of course.

But Mr K really screwed up the screen version of Hello, Dolly! when he directed it.

I think I would have liked him best....if I had seen him onstage in Pal Joey.  That seems the kind of character I imagine him to be...though his "hero" in For Me and My Gal was not a particularly good guy!

Favorite Gene Kelly dance number: "Singin' in the Rain" from Singin' in the Rain.

y favorite Hustons have mostly been named already: THE MALTESE FALCON (by far my favorite), TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, KEY LARGO. Of his later work, I like THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, FAT CITY, and I loved PRIZZI'S HONOR.

REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE was one of those films that did the best it could with non-cinematic material. I haven't seen THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE in many years, but I remember being impressed with it when I saw it.

Hard to believe Huston won only two Oscars (one for writing and one for directing SIERRA MADRE) in his long career.

Favorite Gene Kelly:

solo - "You Wonderful You" newspaper dance from SUMMER STOCK

"The Pirate Ballet" from THE PIRATE

"I Like Myself" from IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER

"The Hat My Father Wore on St. Patrick's Day" from TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME

"Alter Ego" from COVER GIRL

Gene Kelly duets:

"The Heather on the Hill" from BRIGADOON

"The Portland Fancy" in SUMMER STOCK

"An American in Paris Ballet"

"Moses Supposes" from SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

"Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" in WORDS AND MUSIC

Speaking of Gene Kelly, how many have seen his experimental dance musical INVITATION TO THE DANCE? This film done only in dance contained three sections: "Circus" where he played a clown in love with a woman who didn't love him back, "The Bracelet" which was a story told in pantomime as an expensive bracelet travels from one owner to another, and "Sinbad the Sailor," which was excerpted in THAT's ENTERTAINMENT II and was a more sophisticated blending of live action and animation that his earlier dance with Jerry the Mouse in ANCHORS AWEIGH.

Definitely a curiosity but worth seeing once. The stories of the enormous problems shooting this film mostly in Europe are pretty horrific.

Ah, yes, what a witty Porter song!
Even Cybil Shepherd can't hurt it!
There's a nearly great scene towards the end of AT LONG LAST LOVE, in a ladies powder room where Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn and Cybil launch into this number with mixed results. (in the television cut, it seques into "I Loved Him.)"

A very good John Huston film is Under the Valcanoe with Albert Finney. Not a favorite of mine, but one I think that should be seen.

He did slum as director and a good example is Phobia. He should never have directed Annie. He had absolutley no feel for that material and was wrong for it.

I have a lot of affection for Beat the Devil. Unfortunatly the film is in public domain and I have not come across a decent copy out there on DVD. Side note composer Stephen Sondheim was a clapper boy on this film.

But I think his best films were his earlier ones. The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo they are my favorites. Never could get into the Treasure of Sierra Madre no matter how many times I have started to watch the film.

I have to agree that his role of Noah Cross in Chinatown was excellent and his strangest role has to have been Buck Loner in Myra Breckenridge. What was he thinking????

As for Gene Kelly the simplisty of the Kelly-Caron dance in An American in Paris was mentioned I would also like to mention the Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire dance at the end of That's Entertainment Part Two. From what I read is that the dance was not original planned to be in the film But it was nice to see two of the best film musical dancers together one last time even though they styles were different and they did not necessarily mesh.

Mary Martin is famous for having introduced Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" in LEAVE IT TO ME!, but this was the other song she introduced in that show. I have her singing it on an old LP of famous female vocalists from the 1930s and 1940s.

Hundreds of Actors (based on Hundreds of Girls by Jerry Herman)

Bruce Kimmel sings
I'll fill the stage with Tammy and Bob and Brad and Billy and Ben
I'll pull the greatest stunt this business has seen
Till ev'ry fella from Weho to Bev Hills sees
All of his fantasies!

One on stage right
Two on the left
Maybe a dozen or
Twenty or more
I'll get hundreds and hundreds of boys

What gives a man
Power and punch
Brian for breakfast
And Danny for lunch
Having hundreds and hundreds of boys

Tammy sings
Show him a blonde
And something in his soul will leap to respond
But then again he's also terribly fond
Of this brunette and so
Instead of one dandy trip
Pass him the licorice whip
I'll sprinkle spice
Into his life
To make him forget
That he's stuck with his strife
Give him hundreds and hundreds of boys

Bruce sings
Benny and Brick
Kenny and Kurt
Two for the entree
And three for dessert
Give 'em hundreds and hundreds of boys

Four in the wings
Five might be swings
I'm gonna make
The cash register ring
Having hundreds and hundreds of boys

I'll fill the stage with Tammy and Bob and Brad and Billy and Ben
I'll pull the greatest stunt this business has seen
Till ev'ry fella from Venice to Torrence sees
All of his fantasies!
Look!

Revealed-all men auditoning

Boys (Speaking variously)
Hi Bruce
How's it goin'?
It was great last night!
Hi Pal!
Let's play
Did I get the part?
I'll see you later.
See you tonight.
Cute butt
Oh he's such a sweetie
Are you coming out?

Goodbye Bruce
He's so cute
See ya Bruce
Bye Sir

Men sing
What gives Bruce
Ginger and snap
Goin' through life
With his little ol' lap
Full of hundreds and hundreds of boys
What gives a man
Power and punch
Charles for breakfast
And Michael for lunch
Having hundreds and hundreds of boys

Analysts find
This thing called actor man
Was never designed
With only one eternal role in mind
And so we gotta yell to
Hell with propriety
Viva variety
Sinner or saint
School boy or queen
One boy is boring and
Two are obscene
Give 'em hundreds and hundreds of Boys

I don't know what the best Houston film is, but the worst is THE BIBLE.  Almost, but not quite, a camp classic.

My favorite Gene Kelly film  --- and probably the most under-rated MGMusical ever made --- is "It's Always Fair Weather", but only in a widescreen print.  And "I Like Myself" from that film is his best number.

BK's theme: "And another hundred actors just got off of the freeway..."

One word of audition advice BK:  Make sure that these actors are interested in being in a play and not just using it to show themselves off to casting people from movies and television.  Also make sure they will commit to the entire run and not call up one day and say they have a bit part in a sitcom and can't do the play that night.

Good Afternoon!

I have yet to step outside my apartment today, but from all the various reports, it's a good day to stay inside.  It's not too hot, but the humidity finally kicked in today - well, it started "hinting" yesterday. So, in the meantime, I'm watching "Catch Me If You Can" on HBO right now - my first time.  So far, so good.  And I'm digging John Williams' themes and scoring.  I'd like to see a score or two to see how some of the figures and motifs are notated - and in what meter and/or meters they're in too.

I'll most likely venture out after the movie is done to stretch my legs and get some air - even though it may be a little "thick" outside.  And then...  I may go ahead and venture back up 95 to Fairfax to see my family again, and to spend the 4th with some family and friends.  We shall see...

That's what I always say when I have a moving sale. But then I count the hundreds of dollars at the end of the day, and I stop saying it. Anyway, you'll have lots left over to give to charity. So everyone winds up happy.

BK, re: auditions.  When I was an actor, I used to love helping director friends during auditions.  I would volunteer to read with the actors.  Directors always liked having someone competent that they trusted up their feeding the auditioner.  Sometimes when you have two people auditioning, reading with each other, a bad actor could cripple a good actor's reading because of bad choices or strange rhythms.  The ones I always hated were the ones that tried to act out all the business in the script while reading...and then would proceed to get lost in the script, lose pace, and just make a bollocks of everything.

re: Tarzan documentary.  As always, BK, good to see my pal Rudy Behlmer.  Another of my pals, Tracy Griffin,is also on it.  Tracy was president of the LA Sub-ERBS, the local branch of The Burroughs Bibliophiles out here...in fact, founded the organization.  I remember him when he was just a green kid fresh from Mississippi, having him up to see my library when he was trying to meet all the local Burroughs fans out here.  He's become quite the Burroughs scholar and one of the movers and shakers in Burroughs fandom and writes lots of articles, not just on Tarzan, for professional film and comic genre mags.

Ex-Tarz Denny Miller and I were just emailing each other the other day about the how grey and decrepit the annual Burroughs Dum-Dums (ape language for 'gathering") have gotten over the years and how new blood is needed to keep the literary fan contingent alive.  If Tracy can't do it, no one can.  He actually threw two of the best Dum-Dums out here that were about three years apart.  Harlan Ellison was the guest-speaker at one (where I met him) and our mutual pal, Bill Stout, did the T-shirt artwork.  It was through our local Sub-ERB meetings, I met Bill.  So it was good to have Tracy's insights on the films and glad he got the gig.  After all, he called my screen adaptation of PRINCESS OF MARS (the very first script written), the most Burroughsian script ever!  So he must know what he's talking about.

Now I don't know what real insights Johnny Weissmuller Jr. can offer but it was fascinating just looking at his craggy, worn face.  Looks like he done some hard living somewhere.

Has anyone ever seen Huston's SINFUL DAVEY?  Not a good film, but I was somewhat intrigued with it, the only time I've ever seen it and would like to take a look at it.

I see where TCM is having fans vote on films they'd like to see on DVD.  Top five will released.  Saw RANDOM HARVEST on the list.  Gets my vote.

Yes, it's horrible to audition with a bad actor. Back in my acting days, I once auditioned for Second City in Toronto. Would've given anything to be part of that troupe. And I was funny and good at improv. Well, at the audition, for the first cut, I was sent up with someone who was SO bad that Chaplin would have found it impossible to be funny with him. End of my Second City hopes.
Oh well, this way I can always comfort myself with the thought that if only I'd been sent up with someone good, I too could have gone the route of Gilda Radner and John Belushi and John Candy...  On the other hand....

Jose - If I'm not being too nosey (nosy?) - Did you finally meet with "the doctor"...?

DR Panni - You're not being nosey (nosy) at all...  I was just being elusive, I guess.

The doctor and I have yet to meet.  Due to the continued illness of the doctor he was covering for, he remained on-call and at the hospital for two more shifts.  I think he finally gets to leave this afternoon.  And, again, since he was at the hospital, he wasn't able to get back to me until after the fact - well after the fact.  Needless to say, being kept in a "waiting pattern" again didn't sit too well with me.  Ah, well...  So, for now, that's it, I guess.  Not really upset, just more annoyed than anything else.

And this stuff with the doctor actually ties in with my friend, Don, who I was waiting for two weeks ago.  And, from whom I have yet to hear back from.  He was supposed to come down to Richmond for a job interview in the morning, and we were gonna spend the rest of the day together playing catch up.  -We haven't seen each other since finishing college.  I even tried calling him when I was back up in DC earlier this week, but still no return phone call.  I'm actually getting worried now.  So...  I'm just hoping that all is well, and that "something" just happened, and that's he in his own world right now for whatever reason.

But all this waiting... ah, well...

Ah ...DRJOSE....I bought the CATCH ME IF YOU CAN soundtrack...it is very catchy and a fun listen.

I may actually have to pick myself up a copy now too.

I avoided seeing this movie when it originally came out since I was still put off by Leonardo DiCaprio-mania/over-exposure.  -And I still can't get his "Growing Pains" image out of my mind.  I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by both Mr. DiCaprio and Mr. Walken in this movie.  Both of them seemed to be not so "them" - not using their usual bag of acting tricks.  It ended up being a nice way to spend the afternoon.

OK... I need to head out for some food..  I'm thinking of stopping by the seafood shop down the street.  They cook things to order - just pick what you want out of the case, and then they fry, steam, boil, broil or bake it for you.  I know it's hot outside, but I'm in the mood for some calamari, hush puppies and cole slaw.  Hmmm...

DRJANE what is a Walla Walla onion onion?

WHAT'S A WALLA WALLA ONION??  It's a sweet onion grown in Walla Walla, Washington (hence the name).  There are other sweet onions, but it can't call itself a Walla Walla sweet unless it's grown in that area (unless I'm wrong...someone, please correct me, if necessary).  Anyway, they're supposed to be so mild that you can eat them like an apple.  I haven't tried that, but they are very mild and delish!  Click HERE (http://sweetonions.org/) for more information!

Since I'm going stir-crazy over here in Eastern Washington, and there's not a darn thing festive to partake of for the 4th, I am headed west to the Oma of Tac for the weekend.  DR Ann has assured me that the fireworks at the waterfront are quite enjoyable, and, if nothing else, it'll get me out of this town of mine for a day or two.  Perhaps we'll bump into TCB lurking about!

Barbecue foods that I like to cook?  Basically, just hot dogs, hamburgers, s'mores...standard, simple things like that.  Nothing fancy...nothing with too many ingredients (other than my dad's potato salad, but he makes that, not me).

Official Topic of the Day:  Favorite John Huston Movies (that I've seen):
Does Casino Royale count?  He's listed in imdb.com as one of the directors (or something like that).
The African Queen
Key Largo
The Maltese Falcon
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

As for Gene Kelly Dances, I don't remember specific dances, but I really like these movies that he was in (that I've seen):
An American in Paris
Brigadoon
For Me and My Ga
On the Town
Singin' In the Rain (just about anything in this!)

Looking at the list of titles offered, I have to assume that there is another major Judy Garland box being readied for release within the next year. (I know there's a Garbo box coming in the fall.) No, Garland, no Kelly, no Astaire among those twenty possible selections. Also, only THE LETTER among the Bette Davis classics they have at their disposal, and none of their Joan Crawford MGM or Warner titles . I was hoping for THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX for Davis and FLAMINGO ROAD for Crawford. I'll bet on DVD that Technicolor used in ELIZABETH AND ESSEX would be dazzling.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from my walk and my dinner.  And, yes, I did end up getting the calamari from the local fish-monger.  It was quite good, and a great bargain too.

So... I'm pretty sure I'm gonna head back up Fairfax tonight, probably around 9:00.  I do need to make a run to Ukrop's to pick up some groceries that I know are on sale this week - I can never resist a sale ;).  This way, I'll have some fresh pantry supplies for next week.

I've never eaten a Walla Walla onion like an apple before, but I have had raw slices atop salads and sandwiches, and they are indeed on the mild and sweet side.  Being in Virginia, I usually have easier access to (real) Vidalia onions, but with the produce biz being what it is nowadays, there are other sweet onions that I've come across on my grocer's shelves: Oso Sweet, Hawaiian Sweets, etc.

*There's a restaurant in DC called Vidalia run by chef, Geoff Buben.  They underwent a major remodeling of the dining room last year, but the food that comes out of the kitchen is still as good as it was when the place first opened.  And during Vidalia onion season, some of the creations that get brought to your table are simply amazing.  If you do happen to make it there one day, if the Baked Vidalia onion is available be sure to order it.  So simple, and sooo good.  In fact, NPR did a story on it a few years ago!  -I wonder if the recipe is still available somewhere on their website.  Hmm...

Back from doing some errrands. Had an interesting chat at Trader Joe's. I tend to talk to people who interest me if they seem approachable. I'm a writer, I'm curious. This drives certain of my dear friends nuts, but hey. Anyway, I chatted with an older gentleman who is the father of Slash (of Guns N' Roses, now of Velver Revolver). His son is number one on the charts this week. That's what we talked about - how does it feel to have a child who is a huge rock star.  Same as having one who isn't is the consensus. As a parent you're grateful they're healthy and happy. That applies whether they work at Hamburger Hamlet or happen to have the number one album in the nation,

They went to pick up their car, so I came home and ate.

I just love these kids and I brought the boy a spiderman that has a raft you can take in your bath.  He decided to take off the paddles and play hockey with a ping pong ball. :)

Parks - I used to enjoy High Park in Toronto. I think that DR Dan-in-TO lives near there.
In Boulder there was a little park onto which the the back of my house opened. Beyond that - gorgeous mountains in the distance. I constantly had deer in the yard.
Here in Studio City, a small neighborhood park is a three minute walk from the house. I take the Wonderdog there twice a day. I've gotten to know a lovely group of other dog owners there.

Ashland has the beautiful Lithia Park which was designed by the same man who designed the Golden Gate Park.  Though not as large, I believe our park is prettier.

Growing up in Cheviot Hills, CA I lived around the corner from Rancho Park.  I practically lived there. It was a large park with lots of activities, including tennis.  When things got tough at home it was my refuge.  It also had a great area in the back of the park-perfect for “parking”.  Most of my dates would “park” in the front lot where I knew I was safe as the police would be by shortly to chase us away.  ;D Of course I showed Keith my special spot. ;)

Enjoyed the new Special Edition of DRIVING MISS DAISY so much. Compared to the laserdisc, the DVD is very sharp, and the sound is much crisper and more distinct. I suspect they used some softer focus filters on the lenses for the earlier scenes to hide Tandy's age a bit because the film got sharper as it went along. Haven't had time to explore any of the special features, but I should be able to get to them tomorrow. Then, if there is time (going to a cookout tomorrow afternoon), I'll watch MYSTIC RIVER.

Oh, my aching belly!

Sushi at a picnic?  How is this possible?

The whole point of sushi is to start with incredibly fresh fish and to eat it as soon as it's cut, within a matter of minutes.

Now I'm trying to picture this, really I am.  Somebody with knives and cutting boards and those roll-the-roll mats accompanies you to the picnic.  But how does the fish stay fresh?  I'm assuming styrofoam coolers are your method of refrigeration.  Good enough for cook-out meats, sure, but uncooked fish?  Ew and double ew!

Good Evening!

Greetings from Fairfax, VA!  I had a nice drive back up 95 earlier tonight.  The only "trouble" I noticed while on the road was a hearse that seemed to be having trouble staying straight in it's lane.  It never left it's lane, but it was weaving slightly.  Hmm...  Could be a horror movie in the making!  I was behind it for a stretch, but finally made my way around it.

I'm happy to report that my niece, Alyssa, no longer screams and kicks whenever she sees me.  She still gets a little look of apprehension in her eyes, but at least she doesn't go into immediate hysterics.  And if you get close to her, motion to your cheek, and say "Un besito", she will give you a little kiss.  -Made my day!  And my week!  :)

Nice dance, JRand.
I was just talking on the phone to an actress friend in Toronto who is one of the funniest people i know. She's a great mimic. Ages ago she was in the Toronto company of Second City with Martin Short and she "does" him perfectly. Suddenly in the middle of the conversation - we were talking about something farily serious - she became Marty. Then, of course, I had to answer as Marty II. We conversed that way for a bit. And now we've hung up and I should get back to serious writing. I think I'll eat some almonds instead.

Tonight, I'm going to try my hand at a tamale pie.  That's pronounced ta-ma-lee, not ta-mail.  How it comes out will be...interesting.

Or, I guess it could also be pronounced "tah-mahl".  In any case...  :P

I usually make a tamale pie if I find that I have a good amount of leftover chili.  Just mix up some cornbread batter, pour it over the chili, and bake.  Easy-peasy as Jamie Oliver would say.  And if I'm feeling very indulgent - which I usually am - during the last couple minutes of baking time, I put some shredded monterey jack and cheddar cheese on top.  Yum!  *And I also usually stir some minced chives and jalapeno peppers into the cornbread batter.

Were you making the whole thing from scratch?  Were you following a particular recipe?  Were you using a recipe as a general guide?  Inquiring minds want to know!

And all of this is INDIANA......talk to people!!!

Speaking of Indiana... I've been meaning to ask you, DR JRand - or any other DRs who might know... When I was working in Evansville, there were two local specialties I became enamored of - and I can't remember the brand names now?!??!  So...

#1 - A brand of potato chips.  I only ever saw Plain and BBQ on the store shelves.  Very homey.  The BBQ ones were "fun" to eat since the seasonings seemed to vary from bag to bag - and sometimes from chip to chip.  Sometimes you taste more pepper and paprika, other times you tasted more of the sweet, the sugar.  The last time I worked at New Harmony, I made a point of stopping at the local gas station and picking up a couple of bags to take back home with me.  I put them out at a party a few days later, and they caused quite the stir.  A good stir.

#2 - What is the chain of chocolate shops in Evansville?  NHT would give out small boxes for opening night presents.  Mine never made it to the second night!  They were also sold at Schnuck's too.

Re sushi in the park: Maybe they caught the fish in the park pond.

Re parks: We have a nice park in walking distance of my house. Part is natural (desert); part is man-made (ponds and palm trees). You've seen pictures of it.

DR Question:

Joy and I had a little picnic in Riverside Park, one block away, and it got me thinking about parks.  I've such warm feelings about SO many New York parks, but am wondering about those of you in other cities: How often do you go to parks?  Do you have parks near you?  If not, do you feel the natural beauty of your surroundings compensates for the lack of parks?

Lately, I've been taking lots of walks in the park since there is one just three blocks away from me.  Byrd Park is actually part of a series of parks and recreation areas in Richmond that are next to each other.  There's also Dogwood Dell, which is the City of Richmond's outdoor performance space (amphitheater) during the summer; and then there's Maymont Park which is anchored by a huge house/estate.  Maymont has some beautiful gardens, walking paths, and also acts a nature preserve with birds, livestock, bears, etc.  There's also a visitors center which has a "scale model" of the James River complete with fish, turtles and otters!  Oh, and Dogwood Dell also has a carillon in it!  One of my former profs is one of the carilloneurs, and he'll be accompanying the 4th of July festivities tomorrow - as well as contributing to the finale of the "1812 Overture" before the fireworks begin.

When I was growing up in Arlington, I also loved walking and biking the bikepaths through the county park system.  The paths were/are always well-taken care of, and the distance between each park was always a manageable distance - and made it convenient for potty breaks.  ;)

It also had a great area in the back of the park-perfect for parking.  Most of my dates would park in the front lot where I knew I was safe as the police would be by shortly to chase us away.  ;D Of course I showed Keith my special spot. ;)

I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here.  Saw a wonderful movie, Shall We Dance (not the remake), which I'll talk about in the notes.  Now to eat something (all I've eaten all day was a sandwich at the movie, and am starving).  We just squeaked by tonight - you'd think this was a holiday weekend or something.

The one sandwich a day diet. I hear it's very popular in India (no roast beef sandwiches).

Mmmm.... Bridge Mix... Mmm... I always like the "mystery" involved when eating Bridge Mix.  -Will it be a brazil nut?  -Will it be a caramel?  -Will it be a soft center?  -What flavor?  -Will it be a chocolate-covered raisin?  -Will it be a malted milk ball?  Mmm...

And just why is it called Bridge Mix/ture?  Hmm... ???

Der Brucer and I have taken the dogs on walks along a trail that stretches from the local state park almost all the way into downtown Rehoboth Beach.

But we're surrounded by countryside.  The back yard runs up against a protected marshland, which is fine by us.  We have lots of trees and animals.  It's lovely here.

Back when we were living in Long Beach, we didn't frequent the parks very often.  Sure, when der B and I met I was scorekeeping for a gay softball team, so we'd head over every Sunday for the games (and took the pack that lived with us then along with us).  But there wasn't as much need to visit a park in our neighborhood, as it was filled with single family dwellings (they're called "houses") that had front and back yards.  We had an avocado tree in the back yard, and plenty of room for the dogs to play in.

Much of Los Angeles County, and Orange County as well, is what is called an "urban forest."  There are vast areas where trees line the streets, and grass and bushes abound.  While it may seem like much of the land is paved over, the paving is in lines which divide a checkerboard of greenery.  And while there are public parklands, communal spaces intended for everyone's enjoyment, there is also much pleasure to be found in the neighborhoods.  People take pride in their homes and their communities.  It's a far cry from a towering city, where the residents might not even know who their neighbors are.

I had a recipe, but did my usual "general guide" thing.

Ground beef, onion, and bell pepper, sauteed until the beef was no longer pink and the veg was softened.  Added minced garlic, some fresh oregano (from the garden), chili powder, stirred around, then added a can of diced tomatoes and another of black beans, plus a small tin of sliced olives.  Let this simmer for a bit, covered.

Meanwhile, I whisked corn meal into some scalded milk, and stirred this until it was thickened.  Added corn cut from the cob and cheddar cheese, plus an egg (which I had stirred up and then tempered with some of the corn meal mixture).  This all went on top of the ground beef mixture, topped with a little more cheese, and then the skillet went into a 375 oven for a half hour.

Der Brucer liked it.  So did I.

Oooh, I've just has a spooky Internet experience. I was looking at different movie previews and stumbled upon an animated character who said, "Type anything and I'll say it." So I typed "Hi, Anna" and she said it as promised. Suddenly I was taken to another site where she said, "It's close to midnight, I see we're both night owls..." And then she went on to explain (with a lisp - not a computer lisp, just a lisp) that I could get voice programming for "my website." Then I left.

In Japan, sushi is quite often a part of a bento box meal, which is taken with the diner to wherever the meal is to be eaten.  This has a tradition dating for hundreds of years, to before there was refrigeration.  Maki, the rolled form of sushi, is particularly popular in bento boxes.

While quality and freshness are key to Japanese cuisine, there's never been a dictum that sushi has to be eaten "within minutes" of it's preparation.  Somebody seems to have been pulling Noel's leg on this one, making up rules where there really are none.

Potatoes, mayo, celery and some seasonings.  I don't know what it is about this potato salad, but it's the best ever.
