Title: TICKLING MY FANCY
Post by: bk on July 07, 2004, 12:01:46 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have tickled your fancy, your fancy has tickled the notes, we're all now tickled and slightly pickled, so now it is time to post until the tickled cows come home.

Okay, it's about 12:20 and I'm finally going to bed.  Good night all!

But wait!  Questions for Ask BK and Anyone Day:

What's the longest that you've stayed up?  And why?  And how long ago was it?

Me?  I've been involved in The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life for the past 5 years.  Teams raise money any way they can and then the teams all get together (within a county) and walk for 24 hours.  Well, at least one person from the team should be on the track at all times.  This past relay, which was in June, I woke up on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. and didn't go to sleep (for the night) until 9:30 p.m. Saturday.  I did get about three hours sleep (in half hour chunks), so I don't really count that.  One year I was awake for 37-1/2 hours with not even a nap!  Other than the relay events, I haven't stayed awake that long since college!

The day before my scheduled draft board appearance back in 1967 or '68 was an all-nighter, because I wanted to look really haggard and awful, which I did.  That is a whole other tale, however, and if I ever ultimately do a book of Kritzer short stories, that may end up in it.

I and The Lovely Wife shall be attending 110 In The Shade this Friday.

When we fly to London, I routinely am up early the day of departure and usually stay up all through the 10 and half hour flight and, once in London, try to stay up until ten or eleven that night...we often go to the theatre the first night we're in.

Also on long drives across country, I've been know to stay up twenty four hours and then some.  Larry Drake and I would be known to close a dinner theatre show in Dallas on a Sunday and then get immediately in the car and drive through the night all next day to the next theatre we were touring...be it Columbus or Atlanta or Florida, usually getting in on late Monday and then being ready for brush-up rehearsal bright and early Tuesday morning. Sometimes we'd beat the rest of the cast who would be flying in.

DR George: I can not sleep on planes so anytime I have been from here to London has meant about 26 hours flight time between Melbourne and London plus the 4 hours before I left plus another 16 hours or so on arrival in London.  A Flight from New York to Melbourne via LA was almost as bad. I don't watch movies on planes either - reading is it!

Last year, spring finals week...I was awake almost from Wednesday morning at about 6 to Friday night late...can't quite remember when I went to sleep, but sometime after 1.  I slept about 4 hours on Wednesday night, but that was it.  I had a killer final on Wednesday afternoon, so I woke up early to study for it...then a final Thursday morning and two papers due Friday, so I just didn't sleep, except for a few hours, until everything was done...then went to work Friday afternoon, went to a concert in Seattle Friday night, then came home and helped a friend move until about 1 am.

Going without sleep?

When I index a book (one of various freelance jobs I take on) I find that, no matter how organized I try to be, I'm working down to the wire. The deadline is tight and not negotiable (everyone's breathing down your back because it's the last job before printing - which has been booked). I've vowed not to put in any more all-nighters, but it's a promise just about always broken.

Let's just say I needs my beauty sleep! :)

The longest I've been awake for would probably be from this christmas' trip to NYC where I was awake from 9:30am on a thursday until 3:00am on a saturday.

There was a little hour nap in there somewhere... but that was about it. :)

I just caught up on last night's late posts. DR Ann, good luck with the weights.

I recently found an excellent program, which I'm about to start on:

1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb. potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can.

2. Try to reach a full minute, then relax. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

3. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb. potato sacks. Then 50-lb. potato sacks, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb. potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

4. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks. But be careful.

Mornin', all... I began my day with CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, but in a much more focused and "normal" state of mind. I'm sure I'll have a few bouts with temptation to pick up the phone or feelings of sadness and anxiety, but right this minute I feel alright.

BK: I'm sorry about your licensing woes. I'm sure something will work out soon enough.

And now, off to work. (Bleh!)

Wasn't "What Tickles My Fancy" one of Benjamin's favorite songs?

And speaking of Benjamin, I have now received the money from the readers who promised to help cover the fee to submit it for a Pulitzer.  As soon as I get the books from BK, off it will go to tickle the fancy of the Pulitzer judges.

Longest I have stayed up?  When I was in college I was a dj on the campus radio station (I did a Broadway show weeekly, plus a more general show as well) and over finals week we stayed on the air 24 hours a day with an all request show.  I would take the all night shift the day after my last exam, answering phones and playing whatever was requested.  I also used to pull all-nighters when I worked in summer stock but as someone in a tree said, I was younger then.

Theatre historians?  Since Ken Mandelbaum has only written two books and Peter Filichia only one (currently being updated and revised), I'd have to say Ethan Mordeen.  It's interesting that I find his books on musical theatre so informative and readable but I don't care for his fiction.

I picked up the Post yesterday, and all I could think was, "Well, this is stupidity in action.  I mean, Dick Gephardt's going to hurt the campaign.  Way too many think negatively of him.  The ticket needs some new blood.  Like that guy I voted for, what was his name?"

Yes, I saw Liza Minelli in Victor/Victoria, one of the low-points in my theatre-going life.  When she expresses disbelief at the idea that she could pass for a man in drag, the audience wanted to shout, en masse: "But you are, Liza, you are!"

Whenever I hear an intriguing song that's been cut from a musical, it brings up the BK question, was it considered for Lost In Boston, and why didn't it get on?

That Old Piano Roll from Follies
Long Live the King (If He Can) from The Girl Who Came To Supper
I've Never Had a Manifestation from High Spirits
How Much Richer Could One Man Be? from Fiddler on the Roof
We May Never Be Younger from Kiss Me Kate

I enjoy Mordden a lot, even when I find myself taking his writing with a grain of salt.  I'm a bit frustrated, though, with his next volume of theater history to cover the 80s onward, while we wait for his book on the 30s.  I've a hunch he's got something to say about the connection during that decade between Broadway and Hollywood, which could be VERY interesting...and controversial.

Ethan Mordden would also be the theater historian I most respect. Like William Lurie, Ken Mandelbaum and Peter Filichia just haven't written enough books (although Mandelbaum's daily columns could be collected into MANY volumes of helpful theater information) for consideration.

Craig Zadan's SONDHEIM & CO. is invaluable, but I guess he's too busy producing films now to write anything else.

Exciting news for Percy Faith fans (and you know who you are):  quite possibly the rarest set ever of Faith recordings is finally available here in the US on the Living Era label.  Though the 2 CD set is called "Delicado," it actually contains all (as in *all*) of Percy Faith's pre-Columbia recordings for labels like RCA, etc., all from compiler Alan Bunting's personal collection (and all really well remastered and noise reduced with CEDAR).  Alan also included the first few Columbia singles as a bonus, hence the title tune, and a nice reedited version of "Moulin Rouge" combining Percy's vocal and instrumental versions.  There are a couple of tracks featuring Hildegarde and quite a few featuring Percy's early "vocalese" choir, the Magic Voices.  Highly recommended, especially to Faith fans who know his late 50s-early 60s oeuvre, as this set features the first recordings and arrangements of tunes he later did during his Columbia years.

Looking forward to cracking open my CHARLIE CHAN box this afternoon and beginning to watch these six films. I understand from reading reviews that these six Monogram features are the only ones owned by MGM. The other Monograms that featured Sidney Toler and the last ones with Roland Winters aren't controlled by them. That's a bummer. These may be the only CHANs we get.

That Old Piano Roll was, of course, recorded by me, but on Unsung Sondheim, my very first Varese album, done before Lost in Boston was a reality.  The only other song on your list that I heard was the Fiddler song and I didn't like it as much as the two we chose.

Tammy has made her decision - we are moving to Plan B, which I'll talk about a bit later.  But, in a final Blue Surge irony, the agent of the original leading man of the Public Theater's NY production called this morning and said her client would love to do the role in our production and he'd be willing to fly out to do it.  In the letter I'm going to write that will be included and that letter is also going to the author, because I think she ought to know what her representitives are doing.

Good morning. Have some errands to do, then plan to put in a heavy day of writing. Which means I won't be around here much today. Tomorrow I lose a good few writing hours at the Humanitas Prize Luncheon. That's always a nice occasion and I'll report on anything interesting. (It's one of the few awards of its kind with which big checks are given -- and to the writer, no less. My kind of thinking.) I'll take my handy dandy phone camera and see if there are sparkling people to snap.

Also, things will be a bit Cuckoo in Scotland

A question for today. What are some of the things you do out of sheer laziness?

I don't have much hair, but it still needs to get trimmed. Of the three people who cut my hair well over the past decades, the first one died, the second got on my nerves, and the third became a potter. There's a moonlighting hairdresser in my building. Kim's prices aren't great, and she gives a truly dreadful haircut. But all I have to do is phone and go down to her apartment, and I'm in and out in ten minutes. She's been cutting my hair for more than a year now.

DRJOSE you are supposed to email BK!!

LOL....I will try the potato sack exercise.  It sounds just like my kind of exertion.

Dress rehearsal - family night went well.  There were some laughs.  And in my BIG scene I received applause upon my egress, which is always nice.

Excited to hear about Plan B.  I am agog!

Hmmmmmmmm....I guess I would agree with Ethan Mordden as my favorite theatre historian, although my favorite theatre BOOK is THE SEASON by William Goldman with PIECES AT EIGHT by Walter Kerr and ACT ONE by Moss Hart tied for second place.

My question...I know that stereo-optican slides were used to view 3-D photos for many years....but when, why, and how did the word STEREO get to be used to phonograph records with sound separation?

Thanks for the Percy Faith news, JMK - when I am rich again, I will get it.

I stay up all night when I am writing!

Wow BK sorry for all the drama.

But boy did you confuse me in the notes.  I thought the choice was between Blue Surge and Plan B.  Now you say it was between The Shape of Things and Plan B.

Talk about confusing.

I wonder if the problem is that they expect you to give them more time between you asking for the rights and starting the play.  Didn't DR Jason say something about that.

Well I am anxious to hear about Plan B.  And I think you are right to send the info to the authors.

Working like mad on Plan B.  Plan B will be fun.  But, in an amusing stroke of timing, I got a call today asking if I was available for a reality TV show, that could conceivably start on Monday.  I sent them my resume and will be dropping off the Penn and Teller DVD to show them my episodes, but I also told them I was doing this show and couldn't get out of it.  That's a given - once committed, nothing can take me away from the commitment.  If they were to want me, I'd have to be out of there by seven at the latest.  They did tell me that I might have to go out of town for a day or two, but that would be fine, especially if it were now rather than closer to the date.  But, they might not even want me, or the money might not be good, or the timing might not work.

Enoyed the first two Charlie Chan movies in the boxed set: CHARLIE CHAN IN THE SECRET SERVICE and THE CHINESE CAT. The former was much more a murder mystery than the latter, but both held my attention. I don't think as B-movies they're as good or as entertaining as the Universal/Sherlock Holmes movies (not all of those were true mysteries either), but I think those Holmes' movies are about the best B-movie mysteries ever made.

We're having a heat wave here (Irving Berlin/A THOUSANDS CHEER reference). Ghastly heat and humidity. We were supposed to have a thunderstorm, but the clouds came and went without rainfall in my neighborhood. Of course, at this time of year, another storm could blow in momentarily. The other night, my neighborhood got a few drops, barely a trickle of rain, while friends who live 15 minutes away had such a downpour that they lost power for some time.

George, there were all nighters before we had children.  Keith worked at night and I worked during the day.  A few times we were partying with friends until late, then I went to work and Keith went to sleep.  I remember one night spent at the airport waiting for a plane to arrive.  We made it home just in time for me to leave for work.  After children, there were plenty of nights without sleep.

More recently, though I did nap on and off, we flew all night to Prague and didn’t go to bed until around 8:30 that night.  I really don’t know how many hours we had been up, but I didn’t fall asleep until 2:30 in the morning.  On our return flights I didn’t sleep at all, so I was awake at 1:00 in the morning after a couple hours of sleep, waiting until I had to get up at 3:00, and didn’t go to bed until about 9:00 pm our time.  Now add nine hours for the time difference.

Charles, I don’t know how you can go to the theater after the flight to London.  I would fall asleep during the performance.

Writing about this makes me want to take a nap, but then I have been waking up by 4:00 every morning since our return.

I'm still reading DAZZLER right now, and I just finished the chapter dealing with the writing and opening of YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU.

[sigh] One wishes that Moss Hart's diaries weren't sealed away from public inspection until Kitty Carlisle dies. While reading this book, I have the feeling with every page I turn that I'm not getting all the story.

I didn't watch either of the reality premieres last night either. They were both extended to 90 minutes, and I just didn't feel like watching them at that length. I will more than likely watch THE AMAZING RACE starting next week as it settles into its standard one hour format. BIG BROTHER is one of those shows that you can check in on once a week and get easily caught up on.

Since I've had my CHAN fix for the day, I'll have to find something else to enjoy tonight given that only RENO 911! is not a rerun (of the shows I regularly watch, that is). Just don't know what I'm in the mood for.

Oh, I know. THE DOLLY SISTERS is coming on the Fox Movie Channel at 6 tonight. That's a must!

What fun Plan B is beginning to be!

I think we should now call it Plan Be!  Because it is the Plan that be!

NOW...here is a question.  The actress playing Mrs. Banks in FATHER OF THE BRIDE is thin and tall....the dress she is wearing for her "wedding departure" scene looks like Loretta Lynn's dress to me.

In checking online, nowadays....most Mother of the Bride ensembles include a jacket or shawl....is this the case?  And what should I tell her to get her out of Nashville and into something pretty....I know I have a few choices in the costume shop!

Jane, we can go to the theatre, because my wife can sleep on the plane and I get a second wind once I hit the ground.  Just the energy of being there keeps me pumped up.  Also because plays start at 7:15 or 7:30 and are usually over at 10-10:30. I also will not fly coach overseas...always business class.  With air miles and twofers, we've always been able to do it economically.  Comfort is important to rest.

The longer you can stay up on their time on your first day, the better for the adjustment.  So even if we don't go to a play the first night we still try to stay up till around eleven.

Jet lag usually hits us the second or third day, but we compensate, by coming back to the flat around four or five in the afternoon and taking a brief nap before the theatre.  We also don't overcrowd our schedule with events.  We've now been there so often that we don't feel compelled to be tourists and pretty much just live.  We prefer a flat to an hotel.  That way we grocery shop (yea! Tesco!) and eat most meals in and save time and have very casual pace.

Everything is really geared to seeing as many plays as possible, so the days are very laidback and easy.  We also stay right in the heart of the West End theatre district, so most everything we want to do is within easy walking distance or a quick cab ride.  But we think nothing of walking from the Covent Garden area, where we stay, to Tower Bridge, Camden Market, or Portobello Road.  Just a good stretch of the legs.

There is nothing more romantic than strolling down the Strand and crossing Waterloo Bridge over to the National theatre at night with St. Paul's on one side, with Big Ben and Houses of Parliament on the other.  Afterwards, we stroll along the South Bank cross over the Westminster Bridge past Big Ben and the statue of Bodicea, up Whitehall, the seat of government (though sometimes we go via St. James Park -- our favourite), through Trafalgar on the way home again.

Still you have those days where you're wide awake at four in the morning.

LOL.....DRCP - I was only in London once...and would love to go back!  We saw LETTICE & LOVAGE and walked and walked.  What surprised me is that all of the wonderful things you see on postcards - Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament.....all of these things are in the middle of this big city....not out in the country.  You turn a corner, and there is another historic place.  And I loved seeing the guards in their red jackets and tall black hats!

.....Eros stands in Picadilly Circus....Nelson stands in Trafalgar Square....

Hey...I got the lyrics right this time!

Plan B is definitely definite.  Don't want to give too much away at this point, other than we're all going to have to work like madmen to make it all happen in time.  I can say that it does involve music, and that joining Tammy will be our very own Alet Taylor, along with three other cast members, whom I'm currently trying to cast.

We finally took the Jack the Ripper Walk the last time we were there.  Our guide was Donald Rumbelow who wrote the definitive book, The Complete Jack the Ripper.

And I always look right, but I also look left out of habit too.  My head is swivelling back and forth. The big arrows in the road pointing out the right direction help.

Good Evening!

Well, the storms passed over Richmond a few hours ago, but I've been in a whirlwind ever since then!  Well, at least my mind has been in a whirlwind when my body hasn't.

Yes, DRs, by this time tomorrow I will be in the City of Angels.  Thank You, BK!!!  Needless to say, I'm excited, and I'm sure once BK is able to share all the details about the project all you DRs will be (even more) excited!

So... I just got back from a nice dinner - and my friend, Mark, and his friend, John - happened to be supping at the same place.  I had a nice healthy and hearty portion of "Spaghetti a la Greek" (baked spaghetti topped with feta, romano and provolones cheeses with meat sauce) and a nice slice of chocolate mousse pie!  That should keep me fueled for the next couple of crazy hours.

-Speaking of all-nighters... Actually I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight.  I'll most likely get everything packed up here in Richmond around midnight, then make the drive up to Fairfax to my parents' house.  I'll most likely be checking out various things on the net all night, and then my sister-in-law will be driving me to Dulles for my flight out in the morning.  -Thank you, Jet Blue!!

I'm just trying to stay as calm as I can... And after thinking through a bunch of stuff, there is really not that much that I need to clean up, store, and/or organize here in Richmond.  My main mission tonight will be packing.  And, hopefully, packing light.  I just need to figure out if it will be worth clearing out my pantry stuff here in the kitchen, or just leaving instructions for my roomie to throw out things as they start to mold over and/or crawl out of the cupboard on their own.  ;)  I'll see where I am at whatever random time I decide I need to stop, for whatever reason, and I'll go from there.

So...

As for all-nighters...  There were a few times throughout college - and after college -where I just stayed up for at least 36 hours - and a few times where I stayed up at least 48 hours.  For me, an all-nighter just happens sometimes.  And, actually, they usually do occur during full moons.  -Ah, the power of suggestion.  Once I just realize that I won't be going to bed, my body just follows suit.  Sometimes I make up the sleep later on, sometimes not.  And there was that weekend after I got back from DC where I stayed up all-night on Friday, then slept Saturday, but ended up staying up again all-night Sunday-Monday.

OK - Well, I have some more e-mails and phone calls to take care of.  And packing.  And driving.  So...

Laters...

 ;D

I've heard rumours to the effect that James Doohan was suffering from Alzheimers, but this is the unfortunate confirmation.  Back in the early eighties, when I was living on the East Coast and helping put together sci-fi/Star Trek conventions, I had the opportunity to meet him a half-dozen times, and he was always quite the charmer.

The land of the great unwashed - Our hot water tank decided to end its days late yesterday with floods of hot water to wash the floor. Just what we don't need now (I know who does?) is more expense as we prepare for out next trip to Europe. Our clothes drier also has turned up its toes and there is not enough sunshine at this time for "natural" drying here. Time to remind ourselves that there are far worse problems.

Well, I just got a call from my mom.  The sale went through and she now owns a house in Eugene, Oregon.  She is very excited.  Last week there was concern because my father, being my father, had neglected to send in some paperwork that he needed to.  But all went fine and they signed the papers this afternoon.
An interesting thing about this house...about 3 years ago, I had a very vivid dream about my mother in a house.  It was odd because it was just her, my father was absent. Not dead or divorced...just absent.  I didn't understand it at all.  But the dream was so vivid that when I woke up, I drew a picture and a floor plan of the house.  Then I forgot about it...until a few months ago when my mother called me up and gave me the description of this house she wanted to buy.  It sent shivers down my spine...she was describing the house I'd dreamt those years ago.  She had me draw a floor plan of my dream-house as I remembered it, then she compared it to a floor plan printed out of the house.  So identical it was scary...  And my absent father made sense...mom is going to live in this house by herself as she finishes her PhD.  They're not splitting up, just gonna be in different houses for a bit.  Strange, I know.

So yeah, here's a question for all the DR's...has anyone ever had a really vivid dream that ended up coming true??

I'll use up another post to tell you of the STUPID ACCIDENT I had today, DRs. I took my brisk early morning walk as usual -- and I was deep in thought, as usual, by the time the walk ended. I always do stretches before and after my walk. One stretch involves putting my leg up on a chest high wall in my driveway and bending over it to the front and to the side. As I said, my mind was elsewhere (Pomona, I think) -- and when I did the side bend, I didn't notice a very long sharp leafy plant pointing toward me. I bent right into it and it went into my ear. YIKES! It hurt!! That was around 7 AM this morning and my ear still hurts. (Not as badly.) Had I bent in a tiny bit more, I could've done some serious damage. As I said, a STUPID ACCIDENT.

Tomovoz I have had floods in my house before, but never hot water.  Ouch.  I forget sometimes it is now your winter, not a good time to loose hot water or a dryer.  Sounds like my son’s living conditions.  At least you do have a washing machine.  I hope the dryer can be fixed.  If I need one machine I prefer to get a set so they match.

Panni that is scary.  I hope your ear is better by the morning.  I have never done that, but I have walked my head into trees when I hike.  My excuse is the cap pulled down low and I’m watching the ground for pot holes, not where I’m going.

Archie our spaniel is on a restricted diet. He doesn't beg, but lately he's become quite resourceful. Last weekend, when my back was turned, he climbed on a chair at the table and nearly grabbed a chicken leg off a plate. Later he stole some cookies from a friend's purse. (This is serious because Archie has colitis. He was ill after the cookies, but is fine now.) Tonight we had dinner on the balcony. I cleared the dishes but there must have been some drippings on the table. Later, when I walked past the slightly open balcony door, my heart skipped a beat. There was Archie, perched high on a chair - and high above ground level - licking the drippings. (There's a pretty strong railing there, but still ... ) Not to worry - he's okay. (But I did think about National Lampoon's European Vacation - the scene with the Eiffel Tower, the flying beret, and the poodle.)

Ann what a dream!

Keith and I are both fair and had blond hair when we were babies so I naturally expected my children to have blond hair.  A few weeks before our oldest was born I dreamt we had a boy (didn’t know the sex back then) and he had dark hair.  Well, we had a boy and his hair was dark and he looked very much like the baby in my dream.  The dark hair gradually lightened and he was the fair haired blue eyed baby I expected.

Off to watch DONNIE DARKO.

As the drier is older than some of the DRs I guess it owes us nothing DR Jane. It had a new element fitted a couple of years back so its life has been extended anyway. At home waiting for a new water tank to be delivered and then for a plumber to install it and then $$$.
Good time for me to catch up with some ironing.

Dreams are such a wonderful part of life. Last night I walked (in my dream)quite a distance  to check on bus timetables and realised I had taken a silver tea pot with me!  I know the place where I could find out about the bus times was down a road past a cemetery. I did remember to place the tea pot on the ground before entering the shop that could give me bus information. I didn't want the people in there to know I was absentminded or whatever.

Tea pots are of course an essential part of my life. I do not use tea bags.

A question for our Jewish DRs, from one of the gay goys:

Yesterday, an elderly woman came into the store, wanting to purchase a griddle.  The question came up regarding a cast iron griddle/grill (griddle on one side, grill on the other, and no, I don't mean bar-b-que  >:().

Since part of what makes cast iron work so well is that it is not washed and scoured in the normal way, with soap and water, but is allowed to develop a patina through repeated usages, it clearly cannot be used for both meat and dairy dishes.  However, since the griddle of the cast iron piece is on one side, and the grill is on the other, could it be kosher to use one side of the piece for dairy, and the other side for meat?

Or is this splitting hairs too finely, and should we consult with a rabbi before going further?

I've a hunch this question will come up again at work, so I'd really like to know.

I printed out the next few days of the Fox Movie Channel's schedule and noticed ON THE RIVIERA is coming on a couple of times over the next two days. That's one of Kaye's that I've never gotten all the way through. perhaps this time I will.

And then made dinner (which came off very well)
And now I'm on-line.

Dinner =

Pork Loin Steaks, simply grilled w pepper
Broccoli florets, served w butter, steamed
Cheese grits
And an onion jam.

The onion jam was inspired by Alton's "Bowl of Onion" episode.  Figure one yellow onion per person.  Slice off the ends, get rid of the outer peel, cut in half from pole to pole, and then slice again thinly again from pole to pole.

Toss into a heated pan, in which you've melted some butter or oil.  Separate the onion slices some, which also coats the slices with oil.  Season with salt and pepper (works great with cayenne!), cover, and let cook down a bit over very low heat, sweating the excess water out.

When the onions are good and soft, and maybe a bit caramelized, deglaze with some dry vermouth (I used a quarter cup for two onions), and after that has cooked down, deglaze again with an equal amount of apple cider (filtered or not, whatever you have on hand).  Let this cook down until the liquid is absorbed, and there's your side dish.

The cider adds a sweetness, the cayenne a kick.  And don't forget that onions are a good source of potassium!

Yummers!

Oh, picky, picky, picky!   ::)

No, you deserve the good luck, BK.  I hope you can get both projects in.

We only need another 20 posts to avoid that nasty number. If DR Jose splits his food posts into ingredients we should have no problem at all.
Hey, I'm still going through today's posts!  Give me a chance, will ya?!

Good Evening!

Whew!

I'm just taking a breather from my packing.  I actually have all my clothes laid out, so that's good.  But there is a load of two of laundry I want to get done before heading up north.  And then I still have to make sure I have all my necessaries with me - bills, credit cards, mail, good luck charms, stuffed animals, sheet music, etc.  So... I'm thinking I will just keep going here until about 1:30-2:00, then take a nap.  And then I'll head up to Fairfax around 5:00-5:30, take another nap when I get to my parents' house.  Then head to Dulles at 9:30 for my 11:30 flight out to Los Angeles!  Well, Long Beach, but you get the point.

So...  Thanks for all of your Good Wished and Good Vibes!  I couldn't have done it without you.  Truly.  Well, the phone call from BK also helped too. ;)

Back to packing...

*I just saw on the news that there were up to 65,000 people without power in Richmond as a result of this afternoon's storms, and that there are still 24,000 still without power at this hour.  I'm considering myself very lucky/fortunate right now.  I can't imagine having to get ready and pack in the dark - there are people just a half mile from me who lost their power for about six hours.  Whew!

Laters....

*Oh, DR MBarnum and Matt H. - You have mail/private message from me.

Interesting!  Der B and I saw Lettice and Lovage during previews, the same trip that we saw Sir Alec in A Walk in the Woods and Sir Ian in Henceforward.  Which puts us both in London at about the same time!

Thought I should post something - other than the fact that I am listening to Aretha Franklin telling me that I'm all she needs to get by.
Oh, how my heart goes out to you!  The only thing worse (well, comparatively, considering) would be to return home to find the hot water heater had burst while you were gone!  (My family had that happen once while I was growing up.  My mother was so steamed we hardly noticed the lack of hot water.)

So yeah, here's a question for all the DR's...has anyone ever had a really vivid dream that ended up coming true??
No, most of my dreams are firmly rooted in the past.  They're vivid, and highly topsy-turvey, but past-bound.  (I have yet to have a dream that takes place here in Rehoboth, for instance.  I'm actually looking forward to that happening, since that will mean I really believe that this is my home.   :D)

Long Beach Airport is SO much better to handle than LAX.  The lines are shorter, the hassles are less hassley, the people are nicer.  Give me a smaller airport any day over one of the majors.  But by the time you read this, you'll have already landed and know all of this.

Oh tonight on the Game Show Network, should be the November 14, 1965, broadcast - the first What's My Line after the death of Dorothy Kilgallen.  I remember it as a very solemn affair....the panel didn't march in, but were seated at the beginning of the show, and at the end, each panelist said a few words about Dorothy.

It will most definitely be interesting.

As for flying by the seat of our pants...  Well, I've packed five pairs of pants/jeans and plenty of underwear, so...

Dorothy Kilgallen died sometime in the early hours of November 8, 1965.

A time-stamped telegram (3:36 a.m.) arrived on producer Mark Goodson's desk on Tuesday.  It read:

"I know how distressed you are at Dorothy Kilgallen's passing and all in show business share your sorrow.  She is irreplaceable but perhaps I could bring to the 'What's My Line' panel promotional and entertainment values that would be almost as effective. Could we chat about it?  May I telephone for an appointment?"  Goodson gave the telegram to Gil Fates and told him:  "When she calls, tell her it's a bit early to be discussing this."

WHO SENT THE TELEGRAM?  I was surprised and shocked to learn the identity of it's writer.  :P

All about Plan B in tomorrow's notes, up in less than one hour.  I've been watching the Merchant/Ivory film of The Wild Party.  I'll write about it in Friday's notes - strange film, doesn't work, but I gather that what was released back in 1975 was a hatchet job and this DVD presents the original cut of the film.  It's not very good, but it's interesting and it's practically a musical, with a ton of songs by Walter Marks and choreography by Patricia Birch.
