Title: BILLY BARNES
Post by: bk on September 26, 2012, 12:05:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had love and admiration for Billy Barnes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in rehearsals for a new revue called The Billy Barnes Cows.

So sorry to read about Billy Barnes.  I also remember him from my childhood and how he made me laugh.

Vibes of comfort to his family and friends.

Vibes to all who need them.

Have a wonder filled day!

Good morning, all.

The heat is on to take the chill off, the coffee is in front of me, and I sit here contemplating my day.  What is my day?  It's Wednesday, I believe.  I'll be puttering around the house, and this evening I'm going to see LAWRENCE OF ARABIA on somebody's home projection system which I hope is as good a one as he says it is.  I haven't yet seen a really good one, just pathetic demos at stores.

I also sit here thinking about Billy Barnes.  BK, I will add that CD to a future Kritzerland order and shall look forward to letting it take me back to a wonderful era.  Even if I don't get every last reference ... I'll "get" it just fine.

I do recall Andy Williams because I liked the song "Catch a Falling Star" when I was a kid. My grandmother had an album of his amidst the Lawrence Welk and polka albums.

I am trying to place Billy Barnes... I vaguely recall Laugh-In.

More and more of the wonderful performers from my youth are going to be leaving us now. Some will be known to a wide audience like Andy Williams and others no so like Billy Barnes. But both contributed greatly to my foundation of my love for theater, film and popular song without at first knowing who they were exactly at the moment

Between the Andy Williams Show, the Dean Martin Show, the Tonight Show and Laugh-In (not to mention the Bob Hope and Jack Benny Specials), the NBC studios in beautiful downtown Burbank must have been a gas to work at during the mid to late 60's.

I don't think that he is shorter than her in the book. But I don't think it's mentioned. But I just feel like the actor playing the part should be taller. I would have had him in running shoes that had a platform to make him appear taller.

I read that wrong.  I thought the book character was short, not the actor.  I also think platform shoes might have distracting.   Interesting though, not having read the book I never thought twice about his height.

Good Afternoon!

When I ventured out earlier, I had intended to check out a friend-of-a-friend's new chocolate shop/boutique. Well...

To fuel up for my trip, I first made a stop into the third floor of Macy's at Union Square to check out Yigit Pura's new pâtisserie, Tout Sweet (http://www.toutsweetsf.com). Alas, Yigit was not in, but I did try some of his creations... YUM!

And then it was off to check out the chocolate shop...

I hopped on the 9L... As did about 20 other people... And at the next stop another 20 people tried to get on... So, at the next stop, I got off and decided to walk it. Well...

On paper - well, on my iPhone, it was just a 2-mile walk - quite normal for me by NYC-standards. However, I guess I should have enable the new 3-D mode. For a while there, each turn I took, took me up yet another hill(!). Needless to say, I got a good workout.

...And the chocolate shop was nice. Alas, the adjacent Chocolate Lab (http://www.recchiuti.com/blog/?tag=dogpatch), won't be open until October.

And, DR Jose, I do hope you got your debit/credit card hotel double charge taken care of.

DR MBarnum - Chase Bank really stepped up to the plate again, and helped to get things straightened out. Because of my "skimming" incident while I was in Palo Alto, my account has been under a higher alert status just in case someone is still out there trying to use my old card info. Consequently, any errors and such tend to get scrutinized a bit more. Which, in the end, is a good thing - even though it may slow down some other procedures. But... All is well. :)

I can't believe the number of political commercials on TV!  I know I've mentioned this before, but it's amazing--there's one after another, if not for the Presidential race, then for the Senate race.

I guess it's because Virginia is a swing state, but the channels are based in Washington, DC and the people in DC and Maryland are held hostage!  (Just like when there's a hot contest in Maryland and I have to put up with their ads).

it was just a 2-mile walk - quite normal for me by NYC-standards.

At this point I started laughing out loud.  I knew what was coming.

NY is soooo easy to walk long distances.

I think the actors in the Hunger Games movie are good. But it was hard at first for me to get used to the actor who played Peeta (he is quite short). He wasn't how i pictured the character. So even though he is a good actor it took me a while to warm up to him.

In the book he is much shorter than she is?  I looked up the actors and she is 5'9" while he is 5'7"

I thought he was quite good in the acting department. He was the character I was most worried about when I heard about the casting choices. The actor's hair is much darker (luckily the lightened it in the movie).  I think he was a good actor. But probably not the right one physically for the part. Peeta is a huge favorite for those who've read the books. And he was supposed to have worked in a bakery and should be very big and strong. Definitely should not be 5'7 when the leading lady is 5'9.

I get what you mean though when the actors are so physically different from the characters in the book.  If they capture the personality & can act I can usually warm up to them.  If they do either I have been known to scream about it. :)

DR Ron Pulliam took me to Asena (http://www.asenarestaurant.com) for dinner. It was Mediterranean restaurant and it really seemed to be a true "Med" rather than focusing on one particular country, cuisine. I believe DR Ron Pulliam said the owners were Turkish.

We started off with their deep-fried artichoke hearts and haloumi-watermelon-arugula salad. Then we moved on to the entrees: Pan-fried Tilapia (Ron) and Italian Eggplant with "Loose Lamb" (a.k.a. ground lamb) for myself. Then we just had to have dessert: Crème Brulée for Ron, and Panna Cotta with Caramel for me - along with a nice Orange Blosson Muscat.

And it was all quite deelish!

After dinner, DR Ron Pulliam gave me a nice tour of Alameda and Lake Merritt, and then he dropped me off at the BART station...

And once I got back to my hotel, I went ahead and (re-)packed my luggage. I don't need to head to the airport until Noon, so I'll have a few hours in the morning to do some more exploring - a.k.a. eat at the Ferry Building again.

I do recall Andy Williams because I liked the song "Catch a Falling Star" when I was a kid. My grandmother had an album of his amidst the Lawrence Welk and polka albums.

I think that the first time that I heard "Catch a Falling Star" was on The Muppet Show, when Wayne and Wanda sang it...if I remember correctly, a star actually fell and landed in Wayne's pocket and caught on fire and he, of course, went into a panic trying to put out the fire on his clothes! :D

If anyone doesn't know/remember Wayne and Wanda from The Muppet Show, that was the running gag with them...something ALWAYS went wrong with their songs.
