Well, yesterday was a day.  The whole library staff (all 27 branches and administrative service center...except for those who used vacation) convened together for our All Staff Training Day.  Our keynote speaker was the controversial (and first cousin to our HR manager), Orson Scott Card.  MANY staff members were quite concerned about him being our keynote speaker because of his outspoken religious-based views on homosexuality, but I didn't hear of any incidents happening during the day.  I wore my "It Gets Better" t-shirt and a "NØ H8" button.  Nothing that anyone wore caused any incidents at all.

But what really had EVERYONE talking was that his speech was pretty damned BORING!  He talked about baboons, about how they had big teeth so that they could chew.  He talked a bit about how stories developed in societies, and a whole lot about nothing...he never tied anything to his books.  He never talked about his own writings at all, not Ender's Game, not the movie that being made about it, nothing.

Seriously...WTF? ???

The only things that we could figure out was that a stroke that he had last year affected him worse than anyone thought. :-\

Or something that I just thought about last night (and it's only MY theory):  that he somehow heard about our "issue" with his opinions (which would require inside information...his cousin) and he decided to fulfill his contract and give us a speech, but the contract probably didn't specify what he had to talk about so he decided to give us a horribly boring speech as a big FU.

Just a thought.

Other than Moon River

Two songs that had the lyrics written after the film theme's became popular.

Speak Softly Love (Theme From The Godfather)
Where Do I Begin (Theme From Love Story)

Two film songs he recorded that didn't become popular. Both were nominated for an Oscar

The Peeking Theme - "So Little Time" (El Cid) as it is credited; is not heard in the film, but as this was a "roadshow" production it was played as people walked out of the theater.

Marmalade, Molases and Honey from The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. It was used as an interlude much in the style of Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head but movie was not a success and neither was the song. But I like it

Good morning, all! I'm still in a je ne sais quoi orpourquoi mood, and I will be glad when it passes. I don't know if it's my body slowing down from all of the rush and hurly burly since June, or if I'm just uhappy and discontented with things.

i'm heading off to Toyland to work on ROBERTA and ponder.

Where is DR Ben these days?

TOD:

My favourite Andy Williams number is his dubbing (when he was a teenager) of Lauren Bacall on the Hoagy Carmichael number, How Little We Know, for TO HAVE & TO HAVE NOT.  Of course, whether his version made the final cut is in dispute.  Howard Hawks insists Lauren Bacall performed the number in the final cut, but this from yesterday's London Daily Mail:  "Williams would never confirm that he was ousted, he just gave his slow smile and said, 'Maybe', giving everyone the impression he was the real star."

Other than that, I think I'd have to go with Canadian Sunset.

BK's description of his impressions of "Temple of Doom" are PRECISELY how I felt when watching it at the National Theater in Westwood.  The revisiting of it once on DVD is even the same.  I know it's generally considered the weak one of the original trilogy, but the notes conveyed the nuance of the experience just perfectly.

(My showing at the National even included a film breakdown, the handling of which I wrote a letter of complaint about to the theater, and I received a nice reply with a couple of passes to Mann Theaters -- which like a complete idiot I completely neglected to use!  I still have the letters.)

Y'all aren't probably going to be familiar with "my favorite Andy Williams" song, but it was on one of his late 1960s albums (don't remember the title).  The song is "I Want to Be Free".

Words and Music by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart

"I want to be free like the bluebird flying by me
Like the waves out on the blue sea
Your love has to tie me, don't try me, say goodbye

"I want to be free, don't say you love me, say you like me
But when I need you beside me
Stay close enough to guide me, confide in me, oh-oh-oh-oh

"I want to hold your hand, walk along the sand
Laughin' in the sun, always havin' fun
Doin' all those things without any strings to tie me down

"I want to be free like the warm September wind, babe
Say you'll always be my friend , babe
We can make it to the end, babe
 Again, babe, I gotta say

"I want to be free
I want to be free
I want to be free"

Sigh.

I have a 45 rpm that was part of the "Christmas" when I got my first hi-fi record player.  It's Andy Williams singing Hawaiian songs....Blue Hawaii, Sweet Leilani and two others.  I played that record THOUSANDS of times...that and the other 45 rpm....Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas" and three other songs, including the Latin version of "Adeste Fidelis" which I committed to memory and sang along with him, even in the summertime!

It would be another couple of years before I discovered film music and soundtrack albums.

That's the smart way to eat, BK.   I love it when I can sit down to a good midday meal.   Other times, though, the main meal gets relegated to an early evening time slot.  Some days just don't allow time for anything other than a quick bite.

Well, I've done the show.  So, it's the complete-est in me that must include this in my library.

I do like Wildhorn, and I just looked - I have both the concept and Broadway recording of Wonderland - have I listened to them?  I don't know. Did I pay for them?  Probably not -I have very generous friends that feed my habits :)

Every week the teacher puts their names in a draw for prizes. She is a good kid so usually she has her name in a bunch of times. But this time I asked her how many times her name was in the draw and she said only once. Because every time the teacher was adding names in for doing good stuff she was blowing her nose.

Somehow she won anyhow. She got to take the class stuffed animal home for the weekend.

The guy whose name was drawn first declined and took a prize from the prize bag. For some reason everyone else but this one kid always chooses to take the class pet home. They all think this is the greatest thing ever.

It is dirty and my sister made her carry it around in a plastic bag. :)

Great Herbert Lom story in the Washington Post:

In 1953, songwriters Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II informed Mr. Lom that they wanted him to audition for the role of the King of Siam in the London production of their hit musical “The King and I”; Yul Brynner had become a Broadway star in the role.

Mr. Lom sent the composers a telegram saying he was unable to do so because he could not secure a visa to come to the United States. “America would not let me in,” he told the Independent. “I was suspected of being a fellow traveler, a Communist sympathizer. Everybody had Communist leanings. But I was not a lover of Communist regimes. And I admired America greatly, yet for many years I was not allowed in.”

Undeterred, Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote back saying they would meet him in Canada. Only a few minutes into the audition, they gave Mr. Lom the part. He performed it for two years, opposite Valerie Hobson as schoolteacher Anna Leonowens, and received critical acclaim. Theater critic Kenneth Tynan called Mr. Lom “practically an act of God” in the role.

Was his performance recorded?

As a teacher at a private school, students (mostly their parents) are rather generous with gifts either at Christmas time, end of the school year, etc.  Let's just say I've accumulated many gift cards that I'm not "good at" redeeming.  So, I went through my cards and uploaded the iTunes cards into my account and was able to purchase several new cast recordings.  Which is great, because I hate buying them 'cuz they usually aren't worth it, but now at least they are part of my cast recording collection.  In the process of doing this, I come to the OBC of Nice Work if You Can Get It.   Has anyone heard this?  I'm not a huge Gershwin fan to begin with, but is there anything exciting about it?

You make it sound easy.

Well it was definitely easier for me than for my sister. She is used to eating breakfast by 7:30am. She was feeling quite ill by noon.

I was hungryish. But I've got enough fat on me to last for 1 day. :)

My niece has been blowing her nose like crazy for like 3 weeks. My sister is convinced it is allergies, since she doesn't have a fever or any other symptoms. And she has 100% of her energy.

My guess that is allergies.

PEANUT BUTTER HAYSTACKS

10 pkg Reeses peanut butter morsels
2T. Skippy extra chunky peanut butter
5oz can La Choy chow mein noodles

Melt peanut butter morsels
Stir in peanut butter (melt a little longer if needed)
Mix in noodles until well coated
Form little clusters (haystacks) on wax paper or tin foil
Set in frig to harden

I don't do anything little so my haystacks are a bit larger.

The Hal Linden shoot went equally as well as the Euan Morton shoot.  Hal is just terrific and look unbelievable for his age.  He was so cute - he arrived and asked if we had make-up for him and I told him we didn't really do that - he'd brought his own, just in case :)

What a pro he is - just nailed it all very quickly.  He used cue cards but he's so good at it you'd never know.  Very happy with my camera people and I think they will be with me now on all the shoots, so that's great.  Our sound guy has done all the LA episodes and he's great.  Next up, Juliana, in an hour.

It's been an incredibly crazy week.  I can't even begin to explain how crazy it's been.  Not bad, but whew!

I was going to spend the weekend doing nothing, but a friend from New York will be at the lake, so I guess I'll head up there for a few hours on Sunday

Good Evening!

Greetings from somewhere in the air between San Francisco and Chicago!

The WiFi on this flight teeters between dial-up modem slow and non-existent with rare bouts of standard connectivity rates. So... If this post goes through, then good.  If not...

I got to play tonight. I played with a toddler whose mommy is on bed rest until the new baby comes (hopefully a few more weeks). Now I remember why babies are for young people.

I don't know what a peanut butter haystack is, but I require a bunch of them RIGHT NOW.

And some heath toffee cookies.  STAT.

When I was a kid, I always thought it was a Health Bar.  I could never figure out why anyone would want a healthy candy bar.

BK:  What's a typical turnaround time on Outside the Box?  About when might the ones you're working on now be completed and made public?

Didn't you watch it this afternoon?   :)

*We were supposed to have dinner at The Bristol (http://www.thebristolchicago.com/), but since we would have ended up walking in just as the kitchen was closing, well... We'll be dining there on Saturday night instead before we see Sunday In The Park With George at Chicago Shakes.

At the party I went to tonights, scorpions and maggots were offered among the appetizers. And haircuts. And log rolling. And fencing. And henna tattoos. And falcons.

As my friend Sharyn said, "ahhh the old log rolling/fencing/scorpion eating party I should have guessed."

Were the insects fried, caramelized, salted, dipped in chocolate or all of the above?

They were boiled, I think. But they were in a honey-citrus glaze. And on Belgian endive with goat cheese.

And I was glad I didn't get one. Or the maggots, either.

The Juliana rehearsal went really well - first time in weeks that we've been with the pianist - we had some stuff to work out with him and we should be fine for our Saturday run-through.

Then I went directly to watch the Outside The Box rehearsal.  Kay Cole has done a splendid job staging the two number - I only had minor nits to pick and she fixed those things and we're set to go - fun ensemble.

TOD:

It would be another couple of years before I discovered film music and soundtrack albums.

oh gosh yes!  I remember this song!!!

Today was my sister's 48th birthday.  The family went to her house and we had Thai food.  I had some pineapple curry with rice and chicken (mild) and it wasn't too bad.  What is too bad is that I left it at my sister's house.  I won't be able to get it until Saturday because tomorrow night, I'm going to a union meeting after work.  HOPEFULLY, there will be more than four people at the meeting.
