Title: BLISS
Post by: bk on October 02, 2012, 12:40:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had bliss, and now it is time for you to post until the blissful cows come home.  They're currently listening to their favorite classical composer, MOOtzart.

Good morning, all!

I slept late. I have a lunchon and theatre date at 1pm, so I will putter around here before heading to the East Side to meet Bruce Pomahac at 1 for lunch. After that, we will be seeing the 3pm performance of MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF at the York. I'm a big fan of the show, and I hope this production is good.

I have things to put away, as well as some beginning work on the DEAREST ENEMY liner notes to deal with before I go.

About three years ago I read every James Bond book in the order written, which was wonderful.  Several months later I watched every Bond movie in the order filmed, also very gratifying, and at that time it was my first viewing for several of them.  There are still about a thousand commentaries and such goodies awaiting my return, and I'd really like to do it all again, both the reading and the watching, but that will have to wait at least a couple of months.  My idea for it next time is to once again read the books in chronological order, but then watch the related film(s) immediately following...then go on to the next book, etc.

TOD:   Oy!  Where to begin?

I know!  I'll begin in 1985-86 when I lived near Chicago for a year and a half and had my life transformed by the discovery of the Chicago hot dog.  That style will forever be number one for me.

http://www.hotdogchicagostyle.com/

Another favorite is a Nathan's chili dog.

So many great variations, though.  I'll probably add to this later.

TOD: I like Chicago dogs, but they're kinda fussy for my tastes. A good New York dog with the onions and some mustard is just fine.

I'm sure the first hot dog that I ever had was made by Mom and was served back from before I can remember much of anything. I don't eat them too often these days, but still enjoy a corn dog every now and then.

Nice photo DR ELMORE - it was worth all of YOUR trouble.

I love MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF.  I bought the LP for fifty cents at a drug store many decades ago.  I have listened to it many times since then, although I took my time unwrapping it - it was probably a couple of months later.

I still haven't gotten rid of that TEXT ENHANCE thing....and it is making FIREFOX run very fast and using up a lot of space.  I used DR BEN's solution and thought it worked, but it instead that just wiped out all of my password cookies so that I have to sign in on many sites every day.

The program is disguised very well on my system and not under any name I can indentify.....most frustrating.

The good news is that Rev. Samuel Parris was back at rehearsal last night so that I get to be who I am.....for now, for always, I hope.

Better news is that it is always VERY NICE when some idiot in the cast calls you something dumb - that usually within a page or two THEY get called on something even dumber.

I used to like wolfing down one or two NYC street hot dogs at a buck each (downtown, not midtown), but I grew tired of their blandness, and as much as I love onions, that soupy concoction doesn't do anything for me.

Went to see the film LOOPER today (a title which I keep having difficulty remembering for some reason).  I enjoy time travel films and this started well with an original and complex idea but at the half way point it shifted direction to become a predictable child in peril movie, with an anti-climactic ending.

At least my local multiplex showed the film with the full height and depth of the screen unlike when I saw PROMETHEUS when they showed the film within a 1.85:1 ratio and simply reduced the height to get it to 2.35:1.

TOD:

When I was small - way back in the early 1950's, the Rexall Drug Store used to have a fountain counter with tall round stools to sit on.

They also had a hot dog roaster with lots of spikes on it.....the hot dogs went around and around and they were bathed in red light.

I loved to go in there, choose MY own hot dog, and then ask for dill pickles and mustard......   It was the BEST hot dog ever.  Of course I was under five years old.....but I remember it as THE BEST HOT DOG EVER.

If you have not tried a hot dog with a dill pickle and mustard, you don't know what you're missing.
Title: Re: BLISS

TOD:

My first hot dog was likely one my mother made.  My father ran a Texaco station in Johnston SC way back in the early 1950s.  He also sold hot dogs, with the traditional steamer for the weiners and buns.  My mother made chili at home and brought it in.  Folks who didn't buy gas from my father would stop by for a hot dog with chili.

My favorite dog has mustard and onions with chili.  I also love mustard and onions with sauer kraut.

Through the years, we'd go out to a drive-in (not a theater, no...a "food" drive-in) and get our hot dogs with chili.  "The Clock" was a popular establishment in Greenville SC during the late 1950s-1970s.   We'd stop for the hot dogs...either sit there and eat them or take them home.

Flash forward to post-1990 after my father had his stroke:  My folks were living in Aaron's Creek VA at the time and my mother would take my father to the doctor for monthly check-ups.  This necessitated a drive to South Boston VA.  After his appointment, my mother would ask my father if he wanted to get something to eat before they went home.  He'd usually be okay with whatever she suggested, but one day she asked him what he had a hankering for.  My father's stroke had seriously impaired the speech center of his brain and he could not often remember the correct term for something.

When my mother asked him what he wanted, he looked at her intensely and then spat out "Hooley-Dooleys".  From that day to the present, my mother and I refer to hot dogs as "hooley-dooleys".

P.S. to TOD:  Jack, I'm going to have to try your dill pickle and mustard with hot dogs!   My favorite way to prepare hamburgers is to have a grilled bun, grilled onions and mustard with dill pickles spread on the burger.  YUM.

I can almost taste the dill pickles on that hot dog right now!

Thanks. I though the idea sounded good, and I'll probably watch on DVD, but the child in peril part makes it seem as if I can safely miss it at the theater. The same with Taken 2, which may be the worst title of a movie in a time of truly lame titles.

When I was a wee lad, the Snack Bar on the top floor of our Sears Store had the very best hot dogs.  Cooked to order on those roller machines and topped with mustard, relish, and those strange reconstituted onions.  A minor slice of Heaven!

When I moved to New Jersey, I discoved Nathan's Hot Dogs.  And to this day, I have trouble walking or driving past a Nathan's without stopping for a chili dog.

Today I find great comfort in eating a Costco Hot Dog at the end of each visit.  Mustard, relish, and sauerkraut.

Iy was a horrible trip back from the East Side: rain, horrible traffic trying to get to the 59th Street Bridge, so the trip from 53rd to 59th took forever. After that it was smooth sailing to 72nd, when an insane man got on the bus and sat down next to me. He was offendedthat I got up at the next stop and 79th Street could not arrive fast enough. The crosstown 79th Street bus was packed, but I am home, the Man From Philadelpha has not sent a check yet and that's not good news.

MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF was quite wonderful, and I enjoyed it immensely. The production had the original 3-piece orchestration and the cast was quite good.

Current Oakland temperature is Fahrenheit 96 degrees.

That's 10 degrees hotter than was forecast.

This started affecting us on Sunday...and it was pretty warm yesterday.  Today is the hottest day that is expected.

A major cool-down is expected to start tonight/tomorrow.

I guess we're lucky it's only in the 70's today, but humid.

Went and had a bacon cheeseburger and no fries, and then picked up some packages, did some banking.  One of the packages contained Le Cortex de la Planete X CD from Canada - in French.  I listened to it and it's really fun.  Now I'm listening to a new master that should make any number of people happy.  It's a two CD set - all scores by one composer - one score basically complete (only under fifteen minutes ever available before) - a reissue of another score, but remixed and sounding better, with a couple of unreleased cues added, and finally a never before released score.

TOD:  I like your basic hot dog with mustard. Never ketchup.  I do like them with relish too.  Mustard and relish.  I grew up eating a Cincinnati brand, Kahn's...known as "the weiner the world awaited!"  But being from Cincinnati, it is the coney that is the perfect hot dog.  Hot dog, mustard, slathered in diced onions, saturated in Chili (a special Greek style that because of its soupy consistency is really only good as a topping over hot dogs or spaghetti) and heaped with shredded Cheddar cheese.  The debate goes on in Cincinnati which is better...Gold Star Chili coneys or Skyline Chili coneys.  Both are fine (though of the two, I prefer Gold Star), but the best of the many chili parlours serving coneys is, for my money,  Dixie Chili in Newport, Kentucky, right over the Ohio River from downtown Cincy.

I'm also a fan of mustard and relish on a hot dog.

However, I also really like sauerkraut and brown mustard on a hot dog.

And then there's the onion "sauce" at Papaya King.

And Chicago dogs are great too.

And Crif Dogs in the East Village does a great deep-fried hot dog... that's wrapped in bacon. ::)

As for the Topic of the Day - Part Deux...

I'm sure my first hot dog was one my mother or father prepared. They would usually boil them. however, in the summer grilled hot dogs were the way to go - there's something about that char!

Ditch Plains in NYC makes a "Ditch Dog" - a hot dog topped with macaroni 'n' cheese. It's quite good. And it's even better if you added a dollop of chili and a slice of bacon. ::)

Exactly.  Well. not the ONLY way.  But this is a simple classic.  I like sauerkraut now and then, but I usually go with a pile of chopped raw onions.  Build from there, but thems are the basics.

A good brand of hot dog like Nathan's or Sabrett's or Hebrew National, and the Gulden's brown, and a bun that's at least a step up from a flaking-apart store brand.  (But not potato rolls, as good as they are -- they're perfect for burgers, but I think their flavor is wrong for hot dogs.)
