Well, you've read the notes, you've slogged your way through the notes, you've waded through the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the endless short cows come home. 8)

I fell asleep and missed... I guess I didn't miss much. now I think I'll officially go to bed.
JRand - I agree with Jay - you look nothing like Annette! An amazing transformation.
-
OOHH!!!
I realized that now that I'm out here again, I can go to Phillippe for french dip (and whatever the other place that claims to have invented it for comparison), DuPars for pancakes, try that Parisienne Cake BK raves about, Musso & Frank, etc., etc., etc..
Oh, never mind, it's not a food topic day... ;-)
As for media players... Nothing (as usual).
Goodnight.

LOL....I did mine own makeup (sounds like a great title for a play)...and since I didn't look anything like Annette to begin with...well....it wasn't difficult. :o
I would guess that SPINOUT and THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST have Mr Theodore J. Flicker in common as writer.... And TPA also has Kathleen Hughes from IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE! If you can spot her!
I just saw Patricia Neway do At the Consulate's Office from Menotti's THE COUNSEL....I was stunned at her powerful acting....I only knew her from THE SOUND OF MUSIC soundtrack. I love the Classic Arts night time schedule....you never know what you are going to see.
DVD - Bonjour Tristesse....I love this movie.
CD - Welcome to Woop Woop soundtrack
VHS - What's My Line from November 7 & 15, 1965. Goodbye, Dorothy!!
-
What a lot of excitment and activity out there....
It makes me tired to think about it.

CD: Barbara Cook (All I Ask of You)
DVD: Call Me Madam (Is George Sanders making the request? That's what it looks like in the cover layout.)
Reading about Walter Marks in this morning's notes made me check out Golden Rainbow. There's a CD, but it's available only through Steve and Eydie's own website. And it's $25 (US), plus $10 shipping to Canada. I think I'll pass, though I do like parts of the score.

Quiet morning here at HHW. I have nothing in the work CD player. I will probably be listening to BBC and AccuRadio.
Home CD player(s) empty at the moment. No burning or playing right now. I'm seeing Frogs tonight and Anthony is visiting a cousin on the Upper West Side so we will tape Jeopardy to see Mr. Jennings in his 27th appearance.
That's it for now.
-
So we will tape Jeopardy to see Mr. Jennings in his 27th appearance.
From Slate:
Self-deprecating and sweet, the blond, elfin Jennings has host Alex Trebek wrapped around his fast-on-the-buzzer finger. (One evening, the bemused host opened with, "Welcome to the Alex and Ken show," and David Letterman has an ongoing gag in which he speculates that a lovestruck Trebek is helping Jennings cheat.)
Watching Ken Jennings play is like witnessing any great athlete in top form: He's the Michael Jordan of trivia, the Seabiscuit of geekdom. Note his systematic habit of moving down the categories vertically, one by one, rather than skipping around the board. His nearly preternatural ability to land on the hidden Daily Doubles. His obscure betting tactics, which, as near as I can divine, are inspired by an obsessive-compulsive need to end each day's winnings with a round figure. His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers (which, this being Jeopardy!, are of course phrased as questions.) If the topic is a foreign country, he'll answer in that country's accent, and in answer to one clue about hip-hop music, the ultra-white Ken memorably responded, "What is rap, yo?"

Note: The GOLDEN RAINBOW CD mentioned above (as well as WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN also sold only on the Steve and Edie website) are CD-ROMS and not playable on all CD Players... plus it will take you forever to get off the Steve & Edie Spam list.
***
DVD - NIGHT AND DAY, the only movie in which Eve Arden is less than her usually wonderful self. Actually, with the exception of Mary Martin, it's worse than I remembered.
CD - OBC of HOT SPOT starring Judy Holliday with music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Martin Charnin (assisted on one song by BK's good friend Steve Sondheim); OBC of ANKLES AWEIGH with Betty and Jane Kean; and the studio recording of archy and mehitibal with a pre-Dolly Carol Channing.
VHS - An ABC documentary about how dogs act when their masters are not home.
-
Note: The GOLDEN RAINBOW CD mentioned above (as well as WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN also sold only on the Steve and Edie website) are CD-ROMS and not playable on all CD Players... plus it will take you forever to get off the Steve & Edie Spam list.
Thanks for the warning, WEL. I modified my post so that no one will inadvertently connect to their site.
How's Hot Spot?

Good morning. I woke up more tired than I was before going to bed. What a waste of six hours!
Off for a walk to wake me up -- although I'm tempted to crawl back to bed.

DR Ben, please let us know what you think of THE FROGS. Since ASSASSINS is definitely closing on July 18 (less than a week before I had tickets for it, sobbing quietly), that leaves me with Saturday night open to see something else. I had wondered about THE FROGS and also thought I might venture to FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. My traveling companions will probably opt for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS if it's still running. Its grosses, and those for CAROLINE and WONDERFUL TOWN, are looking quite anemic, much more so than ASSASSINS. Just my luck!

DR JRand!!!!
THE SOUND OF MUSIC soundtrack? Patricia Neway is on THE SOUND OF MUSIC cast album. That's Margery McKay singing for Peggy Wood on THE SOUND OF MUSIC soundtrack.

Friday Media Alert:
CD - MICKEY AND JUDY - the four CD boxed set of soundtracks from Rooney and Garland's four most famous movie musicals.
DVD - THE DAY OF THE LOCUST and maybe another Charlie Chan film.
DVR - last Tuesday's QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY.

Ken from Jeopardy is beginning to get boring... but somehow I still watch with my ENTIRE family every night to see if he'll continue on. That's a lot of people crowded around a tv screen literally screaming out answers in hopes of not being labelled an "ignorant youth" by my trivia-king father.
The time he got the dishwasher final jeopardy answer (question?) a few weeks ago, I knew Ken was something special. :)
-
My friend Steve bid on and just won a dress once worn by Ethel Merman. He says he's now looking for shoes to match.
-
Has anyone leaked approximately when Ken will lose?
I know a few weeks ago the paper here said that his run was over (and I think it said it taped in February). So I guess he will be ending eventually.

Media check:
CD: DHAANI by an Indian pop group called STRINGS. I am addicted to this CD which I just picked up the other day.
VHS: Several 1930s James Cagney films taped off of TCM.
This weekends Bollywood movie:
CHINA TOWN (1962) An action thriller starring Shammi Kapoor. Mr. Kapoor is the gayest actor I have ever seen in my life! LOL! I do not know how he became an Indian matinee idol, but he was very, very popular! But if that man is straight I will eat my hat! LOL! Also in this film is my favorite Hindi femme fatale Helen! She is a doll and her dance numbers are always a joy to watch!
-
DR DiT - Why bother? Ethel's shoes never matched HER dress???
Thanks MATTH....I remembered Peggy's name from SOM but had it on the wrong album. I had never heard her sing anything else, in fact had never heard anything from this Menotti opera, and I was stunned! She was a great singer AND actress in this part!
GOLDEN RAINBOW.....I love the overture and a couple of the songs....FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE is a cute duet/dance with Eydie & Steve and the boys. And Eydie does that irritating slide up to a screech that is such a favorite with her.... The description of the show in William Goldman's book THE SEASON is a great read! He talks about its problems on the road and it's New York run.
-
DRMBARNUM - I also like Helen....although you have sent me many films and I have bought many - PAKEEZAH remains my absolute favorite!
-
See what I mean, DiT? If ya got the dress, just wear the first shoes you can dig out of your closet!

-
Jrand53. That is hilarious. I'm going to post the dress that Steve got. It comes with a certificate of authentication, but I wonder - it's a bit classier than the one in your pic.
This - posting a pic - is a first for me. I'm working from DR George's thorough instructions from the other day.

-
Lovely dress!
Red velvet shoes or black shoes will be fine....and yes when Ethel wore THAT dress, she was a bit classier.
Ethel was allergic to roses, ya know!
-
Much nicer than the schmatte she's wearing in the first picture. That one looks like it was made from an overrun of beach umbrella fabric.

'Course if you're gonna sing with Eydie - ya might as well WEAR the umbrella itself! :o

A question for our New York Dear Readers: Has "On Stage and Off" been dropped as a regular Friday feature from the New York Times? The last one to appear (on-line, at least) ran on June 25.

TOY (Topic of Yesterday)
Not an interesting Hotel, but an interesting time!
It was a dark and dreary night. It had been snowing since before noon. I had returned to my hotel (The great and glamourus Howard Johnson's in Newport RI) to pack my bags for the flight back to CA in the morning.
After dinner (HoJo's finest) I picked up a drink from the bar and headed to my room and curled up with my lastest book, "The Shining" by Stephen King.
I read and read, and it snowed and snowed.
The characters in the book get snowbound in a Hotel - I look out the window - I'm snowbound in a Hotel.
The wind in the the story howls about the Hotel.
The wind in Rhode Island howls about the Hotel.
Up for Breakfast (HoJo's finest) - the streets are completed impassable - no trip to the airport today!
Back to the room for more "Shining" and more sympatheic weather effects.
Lunch (HoJo's finest) - watch the kids on their snow-mobiles crusing up and down the white pile that used to be the highway.
Back to the room - more "Shining" - more howling wind and blowing snow.
Cocktails and Dinner (HoJo's finest)
More creepy reading with real effects.
Midnight!
The book is ended!
The Great Blizzard of 1978 is ended!
The Great HoJo's Finest meals marathon must still run another two days until the roads are clear.
What reading Stephen King brought to Rhode Island:
(That's Lizzie Borden's stomping grounds, Fall River, just up the highway.)
Official Statistics:
Official snowfall: 28.6 inches at T.F. Green Airport, the National Weather Service measuring station.
During the most intense 24 hours, 27.6 inches fell, a record dating to 1905.
Deepest Weather Service-listed unofficial snowfall: 54 inches, Woonsocket.
Most intense snowfall: 3 inches/hour Feb. 6, 7 to 8 p.m.
Biggest wind gust: 58 knots, or 67 mph, Feb. 6, 8 p.m.
Duration: Began Feb. 6 at 10:10 a.m.; ended Feb. 7 at 10:44 p.m.

DR Jay,
I think the column usually disappears during the summer.
Loved your schmatte line.

A couple of people mentioned it the other day, but I do think THE SEASON is probably the most informative insder look at the theater as a business that's ever been written.
One wishes another book like it would come along. Some aspects that Goldman reported on in that book aren't true any longer and some are more than true even today.
-
So true MATTH...I learned so much from that book. And I re-read it now and then.
Is it our DRMatthew who is in Footlite's SUESSICAL? There was an article in the newspaper about it today...concentrating of course on the costumes....

The Best of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Shame on me! Ultra skammen. I put on all my walking gear -- took it off and went back to bed.
Much work to do and I'm in a fowl mood (cluck cluck). Will walk when the sun goes down.

Good Morning!
I'm here! I'm here!
And I was up soooooo early today! ;)
I headed out around the neighborhood, and found a great little health-food store that was jam-packed with all sorts of stuff, had great prices (even in comparison to Richmond!), and some very friendly and helpful clerks. So, I picked some "supplies" - including my favorite cereal - and now I'm set for my day! -And for this week... sort of... more or less... -Well, I think you know what I mean.
OOHHH!!! In a case of "It's A Small World"... The young gentleman who BK mentioned in the notes happened to recognize me from his days at American University in Washington, DC! I had played a few rehearsals for a production of FORUM he was in - he was playing Hero. AND... It turns out his musical director is my friend, Chris... And I'm currently staying with Chris while I'm out here! Truly, a small world. -And it turns out, Tammy and I also have a bunch of other people in common.
Well, I'd write more, but I need to get ready to head to BK's storage unit. -And I need to run out and get some other stuff done before then too. So...
Laters...
-
From An AP Story (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,125156,00.html):
While no one in the GOP establishment suggests there's much chance that Bush would dump Cheney, there is still a lot of "what if" talk as the political conventions near.
Is BK planning a political Musical Revue?

I'll be gone for a few hours this afternoon helping a friend move some things for a yard sale he's having tomorrow. Then, we're dropping by the pool for an afternoon of sun and swimming. Back in early evening.

DR Jay, as D-i-T mentioned, the column, On Stage and Off takes the summer off. They usually announce tho, when the last column for the season will appear. I don't remember them doing it this year. The column will re-appear sometime in late August or early September when the "official" beginning of the new season approaches, although Frogs is opening soon and Dracula, the Musical is about to begin previews and will open later this summer, both of them before the August/September date.
-
Looks like George Hearn is getting Wicked.
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/87274.html
-
Jay - The column takes off every summer. In the last one for the season it lets you know it is the last one. I think it returns the weekend after Labor Day. This has been the policy for years.
Dan - Just got HOT SPOT and will let you know my opinion after I listen to it over the weekend.
-
Thanks, everyone, for the information about "On Stage and Off."

As I mentioned earlier, I'm in a foul mood. So some helpless assistant at Disney just heard me at my best (trans: "worst"). I was calling to RSVP the invite to this big DGA premiere of "my" movie. It's going to be quite the night, I think, because it says on the invite "Please join us for a special event to honor those in the industry who have worked to make Disney Channel original movies a success." And when you fold the thing out it has a full page of "my" movie... and all the info (reception, screeing, etc)...then you fold it out again and it has tiny posters of all the other films from the past. So it will be An Event. Anyway, I call, and the assistant goes into the computer -- and can't find my name. "Where did you get the invitation?" he asks. (Meaning - did you steal it?) I told him it was mailed to me because I'm THE WRITER. When after further searching for my name, he said, "I'm sorry, I have to check with my boss if you can come..." I lost it and yelled, "I'm the writer of this damn thing so there's no "if" involved!" The poor man stuttered his apologies, but stuck to his position -- at which point I had an idea. I looked at the envelope the invitation came in, and it had my last name first with no comma. So I asked the hapless man to look under "ANNA"...and...."There you are!" Never heard so much relief in a voice before. I told him that I was not at all surprised by the mistake... (and added a "said she darkly" to give the poor man a laugh). The End. Perhaps I will meet Hilary Duff.
-
Bk, save your valuable time. I...a big Elvis fan...tell you no one needs to see either DOUBLE TROUBLE or SPINOUT.
-
But BOTH are still better than TICKLE ME.
-
Our casting breakdown has still not gone up - we did it last night, unfortunately after they'd closed, but it should have gone up at nine, and here we are, almost eleven-thirty and it's still not up. Tammy has been dealing with them, and at 11:08 they promised it would be up in fifteen minutes. That time is almost gone and if it's not up then they'll be hearing from me.
-
(http://www.projo.com/specials/blizzard/gallery/fallriv.jpg)
(That's Lizzie Borden's stomping grounds, Fall River, just up the highway.)
Huh? Lizzie Borden and Emeril Lagasse claim the same home town?
From "Whack" to "Bam!" This sure hints where his cooking style comes from!

You make me feel sorry for the assistant, Panni! Of course, he should have asked if your name could have been submitted in some other form, since clerical errors do happen.
If you meet Hilary Duff, give her the same treatment you gave the assistant. I've heard her ego is highly inflated these days, and a good popping is in order.

Jose: I think the other restaurant that claims the invention of the French Dip Sandwich is The Original Pantry Cafe. (http://home.digitalcity.com/losangeles/dining/venue.adp?sbid=100035361&squery=5%3acityids+AND+45%3avenuetypekey+AND+%28%27The+Original+Pantry%27%29&uquery=type%3dvenue%26st%3dqf%26vtid%3d45%26stid%3d%26tid%3d%26search%3dThe%2bOriginal%2bPantry%26x%3d27%26y%3d12&skip=0) It's currently owned by former mayor Richard Reardon.

CD
Lots of different Broadway related vocalist and concept albums as I am putting together a cabaret act for two friends. Have several already.

Yes, DRSWW - I just saw this claim on television last week. Actually I think Charles Aznavour is the Original French Dip.
LOL DRPANNI - my philosophy has always been Put 'em in their place! I would imagine that the "higher ups" don't know what the people on the telephone are doing. There are local theatres I don't go to anymore because of the way the box office people deal with the public! I don't stop because of one bad experience....but a history of two or three....and no more JR!!
Got a postcard from DRELMORE today.
I will scan it and post it after the show tonight.
-
You make me feel sorry for the assistant, Panni!
No need. I'm sure he gets far worse treatment throughout the day.
BTW - I gave him more grief by asking for three tickets instead of the alloted two. He also had to check about that (I didn't yell - that I can understand). -- But he quickly added, "I'm SURE it can be done. But I do need to check. And I'll be calling you back very soon. Have a REALLY nice day." ...See? He and I were bosom buddies by the end of the call.
-
Breakdown finally went up at 11:50. I've told Tammy she needs to have them refund her money, as it is now so late that I have no idea how many people we'll get, and how many will be available to sing for us tomorrow and Sunday.
-
I would imagine that the "higher ups" don't know what the people on the telephone are doing.
The hapless assistant wasn't really doing anything bad -- just following the rules. And he was trying to be polite. I wasn't angry at him, but at the Mouse House. He just happened to be standing in the way when I drove the truck to get to Mickey.

That's not quite the case. Cole's P.E. Buffet is the other restaurant that claims invention of the sandwich. "P.E." stands for "Pacific Electric" and the restaurant is housed in the Pacific Electric Building, which at one time was the terminus for Los Angeles' long-gone red streetcars.
Each time I've been to Cole's, it's never been crowded, while each time I've been to Phillipe's, it's been packed. In my humble opinion (IMHO, in internet lingo), Phillipe's puts out a superior product.
-
What The Pantry is known for, beyond its ownership by the politician who of late has taken to browbeating little girls and its gargantuan portions, is that it has never closed, even when it moved to a new location. Except, that is, the one time the health department shut it down.
-
That wouldn't count DRJAY - being a forced closure...LOL.
What is this famous breakdown MR BK is talking about?
-
The casting breakdown on the online casting breakdown services. I'm so annoyed about this three hour delay I can't even see straight. We should have had fifty or sixty submissions for each category by now and we've got ten instead.
-
Ah - I remember, yes.....got it! What a great thing the internet is.
Choices are great! ;D

What is Slate thinking?
"Note his systematic habit of moving down the categories vertically, one by one, rather than skipping around the board"
Yes, I've noted that habit in about 95% of the players.
"His nearly preternatural ability to land on the hidden Daily Doubles."
As he's giving the most correct answers, he gets to pick the next question. Naturally, that gives him, by far, the best chance of landing on Daily Doubles - nothing preternatural about that. It's just the odds.
"His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers "
Well, I don't know what that is. ;)
in the tape player:
I'm listening to A Stephen Sondheim Evening and two tapes of shows that I don't think are commercially available (correct me if I'm wrong):

DRPANNI....I can see it now:
Disney Walt presents Funicello Annette in The Dog Shaggy!
And don't forget Mr Mario Cantone will have his own one-man show starting in October (I think) at the Cort Theatre.

Back from a HOT afternoon of sunning, swimming, and working. The sunning and swimming I could handle, but carting a bunch of heavy boxes up a driveway to set someone's stuff out for a yard sale is NOT my idea of a fun summer afternoon. I was trying to be a friend, but it was TRYING!
Anyway, the work got done and the swim was refreshing, but I'm glad to be home.
-
DR Panni, that would not be funny.
Glad your situation got worked out. I probably would have yelled too.
-
And speaking of wanting to yell at someone.
I needed to check something online in my bank account. I had never done it online before, so I had to create a password.
Anyhow it asked me a bunch of questions then said that one of my answers was wrong (my mom's maiden name). Now it WASN'T wrong. So it said to call a 1-800 #.
Now I know the woman was trying to be cautious. But she was literally driving me crazy.
I had my bank card and a check with me. But apparently they need 3 pieces of information (not including easy stuff like birth dates ...). She was asking questions that I couldn't answer, because I didn't have any bank paperwork with me.
Finally she asked when the last transaction was that I made and for how much. Luckily it was today!
But man, I was so frustrated. Wouldn't it just have been easier for her to put the correct maiden name in my file!
:(

Jennifer reminds me of a weird story from yesterday...
There were, as shown in my photo of yesterday, posters up outside the ballroom of past Humanitas winners, one group photo for each of 30 years. So I'm standing looking at my photo from 11 years ago and this woman walks up beside me and says to her companion, "There I am!" and points to the woman beside me in the picture! Now what are the chances of that? 30 photos, hudreds of people milling about. And I've never seen that woman before or since. (It turns out she was - and still is - Barbara Hall who created and writes/produces JOAN OF ARCADIA. - That's why seeing Jennifer on the board reminded me of the story.)
-
I love stories...I love stories.
-
I was just talking to my agent and told him the story of my "reversed name" for the screening invitation. He laughed and said, "That's nothing. They probably have it that way in the onscreen credits."
That's not funny. ;D I sure hope not.

I love stories too. Too bad mine are mostly boring. :)

We are ready to go to Portland on the weekend of August 21st. All I need to do is know is the day, time and place over that weekend and I will, hopefully, book the house sitter.
MBarnum great you can slip away for awhile.
George what day are you thinking of? What are the hours of the Road Show?
Ann where is Jed? We haven’t had a response from him yet. Are you still planning to go?
I don’t have email from TCB-wish I had been here when he was. I will try writing him.
Am I correct that just leaves JMK?
-
I just used a drive-through ATM at my bank and noticed something incredibly curious. At this drive-through ATM are user aids in Braille.
-
Jane - I'm still planning to go, without question. I'd venture a guess and say that Jed is also planning on it, but he's been mysteriously absent from the online world the past day or so, so I'm not sure. I am sure he'll post when he gets a chance :) (hint hint, Jed)
-
Off to put in THE DAY OF THE LOCUST now. Will report later tonight on opinions.
A new episode of MONK tonight is also something I'm looking forward to.
-
Thunder and lightning!
Off to the theatre for night two of Father of the Bride!
-
Ann I asked you about Jed bacause I don't believe he read about our plans. Have you spoken to him?
-
Jay that is funny but of course, chances are all new ATM machines have Braille.
-
Jane - not about the August 21st date, but we have often spoken of going to a HHW gathering if we were able, and I'm fairly certain that he has nothing going on the weekend of the 21st, so I'd say I'm 99% certain we can count him in :)
-
I will call the pet sitter. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

...two tapes of shows that I don't think are commercially available (correct me if I'm wrong):
Herringbone, the one-man musical by Skip Kennon and Ellen Fitzhugh
Spilt Milk - the only musical comedy cabaret revue The New Yorker singled out for praise in 1993.
Miss a chance to correct you? Never 8)
Playwright Horizons (http://www.broadwayplaypubl.com/PH.htm) seems to offer a tape for sale:
HERRINGBONE
Book by Tom Cone, music by Walter Edgar Kennon,
lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh
"...It's billed as a vaudevillian song-and-dance show.... That description doesn't begin to scratch the surface of this wonderfully bizarre show.... Ellen Fitzhugh's lyrics may be the most clever I've ever heard.... Writer Tom Cone sends us soaring through the far reaches of the imagination.... HERRINGBONE combines the black comedy of Trevor Griffiths' COMEDIANS, the psychological suspense of EQUUS, the charm of a tall tale and the looneyness of Bullwinkle. In brief, it is an hilariously grisly tale of frog-monic possession told in song and dance. It is a one-man-show the likes of which you've never seen...."
Scott Fosdick,The Daily Herald
· Instrumentation: Piano, bass, percussion & vocal
· One actor, one pianist/actor
· Cassette tape $9.95
(I say "seems to " because you have to send them an Email to order anything.)
An why is it billed as a "one-man show" when it has a cast of two?
The Lortel (http://www.lortel.org/LLA_archive/index.cfm?search_by=show&id=2316) billed it thusly:
Opening Night Cast:
Actors
Name Role
Skip Kennon Thumbs DuBois
David Rounds Herringbone
Only reference to "Spilt Milk" I can find is a 1993 Album by Jelly fish and a comedy improv group.
der Brucer

The Best of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Wow - The Best of Perversion - I know a lot about that, what,
"preservation"
oh...nevermind!
der Brucer (who knows less about that)

He just happened to be standing in the way when I drove the truck to get to Mickey.
NEWSFLASH

Mad Hungarian "Tiger (Cruise) Lady" runs down cowering mouse. Film at 11!
-
My weekends are not the same without François at HHW. I think he is back next Friday.
-
GOOD NEWS.. Elmore should be back with us by Tuesday or Wednesday.
-
I looked at the envelope the invitation came in, and it had my last name first with no comma. So I asked the hapless man to look under "ANNA"...and...."There you are!"
Try going through life with three first names:
Bruce William Albert
Drill Instructor, "Sound Off - Last Names"
Me: "Albert"
DI: "I said LAST name" - Sound Off!
Me: Albert, sir"
DI: Are you deaf, sailor?
(you know the rest)
der Brucer
-
Of course, in Hungarian the last name DOES come first. Thus Liszt Ferenc, Bartok Bela, Kodaly Zoltan, Albert Bruce William.

Had a nice luncheon date with George (from South Beach). He came up to Salem to have his car serviced. We went for a nice breakfast meal at Elmer's (me: spinach mushroom olmlette. George: potatoe pancakes). Then we went to a great estate sale in a huge old house on Summer street downtown. Tons of stuff dating back to the 50s...much of it...toys, clothes, odds n' ends still in the original packages! Didn't buy anything but it was fun to look.
I am so looking forward to our HHW gathering in Portland, Oregon!!
-
DerBrucer-regarding the news flash- ;D
Your full name sound very nice even if it can be an annoyance.
-
That's not quite the case. Cole's P.E. Buffet is the other restaurant that claims invention of the sandwich. "P.E." stands for "Pacific Electric" and the restaurant is housed in the Pacific Electric Building, which at one time was the terminus for Los Angeles' long-gone red streetcars.
This sounds like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference!
-
"His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers "
Well, I don't know what that is. ;)
It's French. (An Addams Family reference.)
-
Jane - not about the August 21st date, but we have often spoken of going to a HHW gathering if we were able, and I'm fairly certain that he has nothing going on the weekend of the 21st, so I'd say I'm 99% certain we can count him in :)
Don't see any reason at the moment why I wouldn't be there!
-
MBarnum when we lived in Michigan my friend started me going to estate sales with her. We had such fun. I don’t enjoy going to them alone.
-
I just used a drive-through ATM at my bank and noticed something incredibly curious. At this drive-through ATM are user aids in Braille.
I can go one better. On the toll booths on the Florida Turnpike if you want a receipt you can get a receipt. The instructions are also in braille!!
-
Great Jed!!
Michael Shayne- :D :D
-
Wow, you ask for DR Jed and he appears! Poof. Magic.
-
Yea, aren't I somethin? ;)
-
Wow, you ask for DR Jed and he appears! Poof. Magic.
Behold the power of Jane!
-
The lovely and talented Jane sent me an IM about the impending Portland gathering. I am just so busy now I don't have the time I usually do to post here, but if any/all want to connect with me up here, please feel free to email me at:
jmkauffman@aol.com
We would be happy to put up as many of you as we can in our beautiful home in the west hills. You must not be kid or dog phobic, however. :) We do have lots of room, though.
-
I can go one better. On the toll booths on the Florida Turnpike if you want a receipt you can get a receipt. The instructions are also in braille!!
Explain. Why would this be?
-
JMK that is really nice of you!! :)
-
Jennifer, a blind person could have a driver and need a receipt for expenses.
-
Matt H, MONK will have to wait.
Tonight, like Danise, we are watching STAR GATE. :)
-
Question, when paypal sends a real message, do they use https:// in their link?
I am so confused. I get so many fakes that I can't even remember what is real anymore.
Thanks.
-
I was about to boo-boo.
I thought the Stargate SG1 opener tonight was from 8 to 10 pm (EST), which would NOT conflict with Monk.
Wrong. From 8 to 9 is the (lame) From Stargate to Atlantis, which really is about nothing. The Stargate opener is from 9 to 11.
I guess der Brucer will have to tape Monk, or watch it some other time.
-
Poof magic. I know all about that.
-
P.S. Just took a mo to peruse today's posts--if any/all of you are coming up here by Saturday, August 21, you can hear a somewhat diminished (little musical pun there for ya) Tigard Pops concert at the grand opening of the incredible new Tigard Library. We are the featured performers and will be there from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Normally for our regular concert season the Pops is comprised of between 40-60 voices. It being summer and all, we get about 15-25 people for these particular concerts, but it should still be a great time. Plus, loads of dignitaries will be there, including supposedly some Senators and Representatives.
-
Doing lots of things!
-
I just changed MONK to record tomorrow morning and STARGATE to record at six tonight. That way I can watch STARGATE earlier this evening. TIVO makes it very simple to see when the shows will be on again and to record them.
-
Tammy just asked who that CUTE couple on my computer screen was - I said Jane and Keith.
Barring anything going wrong, I just cast the faboo Susanne Blakeslee, one of the brilliant stars of the LA Forbidden Broadway.
-
Wrong. From 8 to 9 is the (lame) From Stargate to Atlantis, which really is about nothing. The Stargate opener is from 9 to 11.
Where did you read this? As far as I can tell the entire show is two hours. Just in case, I told TIVO to record for an extra hour.
-
Thank you Tammy.
Bruce did you tell her how old that photo is?
-
Where did you read this? As far as I can tell the entire show is two hours. Just in case, I told TIVO to record for an extra hour.
TV Guide. The printed edition.
-
And a happy Page Five Dance for Susanne Blakeslee!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPYHAPPYHAPPYHAPPYHAPPY[/move]
-
This was the first week I didn't receive my TV Guide since it expired awhile back. Thanks for the info.
-
TIVO knows what it is doing. That “lame” show is on right now. STARGATE will be on from six to eight.
Bruce are you going to post a photo of you and Tammy working?
-
I depart presently for the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Los Angeles Music Center. I shall be in attendance this evening at the Los Angeles Opera for a performance of A Little Night Music. I shall file a full report, of course, either tonight when I return or, if that is too late, tomorrow morning.

Playwright Horizons (http://www.broadwayplaypubl.com/PH.htm) seems to offer a tape for sale:(I say "seems to " because you have to send them an Email to order anything.)
An why is it billed as a "one-man show" when it has a cast of two?
Confusion abounds, Der Brucer!
If something is only available by e-mailing a theatre (rather than a retailer), does that mean it's commercially available?
And the answer to how Herringbone could be considered a one-man show is right there in the quote section of your post: the pianist has lines. Much as I love Skip Kennon, no one would ever consider him an actor.
If anyone here is in posession of a tape containing numbers from Spilt Milk, well, I hope it's listened to real soon!
-
The Significant Other and myself went off to see a matinee of King Arthur this afternoon.
Lotsa man-candy and male-bonding until Guinevere shows up, and for the requisite sex scene with King Arthur, she's painted blue and looks like she's actually dead. One of the most the most inept sex scenes I've ever watched.
And England is pretty much a shithole. The only break in the overcast skies are as the final battle is being waged, and the sun starts shining through...it's symbolism, get it?
Michael and I had a lot of fun with this movie, but not as much fun as we had imitating the narrator for the trailers, saying "Directed by Ant Juan Few Quah!" in deep portentous voices.
-
As to this weeks Medea Czech:
On deeveedee, it's all superheroes all the time:
Batman: The Animated Series, Volume One
Challenge of the Super Friends--Season One
Wonder Woman--Season One
and just finishing off the box set of Weissmuller Tarzan films with Tarzan's New York Adventure.
In the CD player
Invasion of the Saucer-Men/It Conquered the World by Ronald Stein
Vic Mizzy Suites and Themes
What I've been reading:
I've just finished Sherlock Holmes and the Terror Out of Time by Ralph E. Vaughn. An inept Holmes/Professor Challenger/Cthulu pastiche...I've read it, so you don't have to. It's crap.
I've just started Nothing Burns in Hell by an old favorite of mine, Phillip Jose Farmer.
-
Cute: Medea Czech. lol
-
Susan Blakeslee was also in Forbidden Hollywood for which BK produced the cast album
http://www.brucekimmel.com/forbiddenhollywood.html.htm (http://www.brucekimmel.com/forbiddenhollywood.html.htm)
Sorry to all SB fans and admirers. This was the best photo I could find of her. if anyone has a better one please email it to me.

The CDs I listen to tonight are the faboo Liz Callaway's Frank Loesser tribute Anywhere I Wonder with the outstanding orchestrations by our own Larry Moore especially with Joey Joey and My Heart is So full of you.
Paige O'Hara Sings Jerry Herman
Sally Mayes sings Comden and Green with my favorite Cy Coleman song Our Private World and one of there under rated songs Learn To Be Lonely.
Skinner and Ripley Duets
Stephen Schwartz Uncharted Territory.
All enjoyable listening and recommend for anyones library.
-
Time to watch STARGATE. :) I sure hope it's good.
Goodnight.
-
Good Evening!
Oohh... Susan Blakeslee! -The things you find out by reading HHW!!! ;)
I'm still adjusting to the whole West Coast time zone difference thingy. I keep wanting to call home - or other people and places on the east coast - and then I remember it's not the same time there as it is here. Ah, well...
I've been spending the afternoon putting together various pieces of music, as well as contacting other people and sources about various peices of music. All in all, it's been a very a successful "hunt".
And I also got in a nice nap. -As I'm sure BK and Tammy did too. ;)
Well, I still have to do some follow up on some of the research I was doing earlier...
Laters...
-
I had to set my cable box/DVR to record MONK tomorrow morning, too, since the USA transmission was for some reason interrupted tonight. Very strange night with the cable service.
-
I was all set to start THE DAY OF THE LOCUST when I heard someone dropping a package on my front stoop. It was my RKO Film Noir boxed set, and so I put LOCUST aside and quickly plucked OUT OF THE PAST from the box and put it in the DVD machine. I've been waiting to see this movie for decades.
And I wasn't disappointed. Lots of twists, turns, and double-crosses, I never knew where the story was going next, and I enjoyed not only the name actors but also wonderful new faces I don't remember seeing in movies before (Paul Valentine in particular). And was Dickie Moore just about the most handsome and soulful young man I've ever seen? I think so. I had no idea he was even in this. Last movie I remember seeing him in was LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY.
As for Jane Greer, well, she may not have had quite the sneaky moxie of Mary Astor in THE MALTESE FALCON, but she certainly ran her a close second.
-
Stargate SG-1 had a fairly good opener. They managed to have three plotlines running simultaneously at one point, with good intercutting. And the changes were dealt with fairly well, explaining the villians and the heroes.
How they open Stargate Atlantis should prove interesting.
-
My cat wants everyone to know that she went to the vet's today and she is NOT happy. But she is too much of a lady to say what they did to her.
-
Good to see you TCB - guess it means that you are winning the war with your computer.
-
GOLDEN RAINBOW.....I love the overture and a couple of the songs....FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE is a cute duet/dance with Eydie & Steve and the boys. And Eydie does that irritating slide up to a screech that is such a favorite with her.... The description of the show in William Goldman's book THE SEASON is a great read! He talks about its problems on the road and it's New York run.
GOLDEN RAINBOW had only one problem.... Eydie!
-
I thought Eydie had some good Ideas.
You Need Hands
You Gotta Have Rain
and of course she knew to blame it on the Bossa Nova.
Much prefer Steve though.
-
Might I just ask, where in tarnation IS everyone?
Everyone is standing in line at Ticketmaster trying to buy tickets to WHAT IF....
-
Still fond of Eydie's Grammy award winning version of "If He Walked In To My Life Today".
-
Not a whole lotta postin' going on. You'd think it was a Friday night or something. I just made popcorn.
-
Friday nights used to be really busy around these here parts. Perhaps a frenzy is in order.
-
Update on media check. I've been listening to "King David". Tonight we will be watching "Bowling For Columbine"
-
Note: The GOLDEN RAINBOW CD mentioned above (as well as WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN also sold only on the Steve and Edie website) are CD-ROMS and not playable on all CD Players... plus it will take you forever to get off the Steve & Edie Spam list.
One way to get around this is to create a new e-mail address just to order from this one website (I have Comcast and allow you to have up to seven e-mail addresses at one time). After you order and have received the item(s), and if you're getting all the spam, just delete the e-mail address! Your regular e-mail address will not be attached to the order and you'll never get spam from them! I have four e-mail addresses: one for personal use...HHW and people I know; one for on-line purchasing...ebay, amazon.com, etc.; one for my bills so that I can pay on-line; and one for assorted potential spam stuff (and things I don't want anyone else to know about. ;) ) If I get to the point of getting too much spam, I only have to delete ONE of the e-mail addresses. The rest won't be contaminated!
-
Lalalalala.

In my CD player, DVD player, VCR, CD burner: nothing.
I have been out and about all day with my family because my aunt from California is visiting. She will be leaving Monday morning, so Sunday will be her last full day. Today, however, we went to see "Spider-Man 2" at Seattle's Cinerama Theatre (http://www.cinerama.com/). It's pretty darned cool to see it on a HUGE screen. It's a pretty good movie, fairly well written script, great special effects. A woman that I work with walked out of it after 20 minutes, though! The beginning of the movie is how down in the dumps (a Cole Porter reference) Peter is because he can't tell Mary Jane that he's Spider-Man. He loses two jobs, Mary Jane won't have anything to do with him, his aunt is going to lose her house...it is a little too depressing. The co-worker didn't like how depressing his life had become. Anyway, things have to get worse before they get better, which they do, but he does discover himself at the end and he comes to terms with being Spiderman. Very well handled, I think.

Estate Sale today from
One o'clock till four.
You go and get ready.
I'll go start the car.
Better to be early, then we'll be the first in line.
You know how I love this, it's amazing what you'll find.
Going through dead people's houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers and trunks and closets
Don't leave a corner uninspected.
I'll head for the kitchen - you check out upstairs
Old postcards 'n pens 'n blue fiesta ware
Shaving mugs 'n winged eyeglasses -
Giant plastic pins.
Linen suits and flowered dresses - I'm so glad we got in.
They just don't make 'em like this
It's an incredible prize
We can hang it in the kitchen
She was just your size
It's a beautiful frame
And the picture's all right
Salt and pepper airplanes
And that deco light.
Tonight we'll go home and sort through our array
We'll find the best spots to put things on display
You can't get this great stuff anymore, I don't know why
But I'll bet we make some young strangers happy when we die.
Going through dead people's houses
Wonderful things they have collected
Open the drawers and trunks and closets
Don't leave a corner uninspected......
Cheryl Wheeler....Circles & Arrows CD.... I love Cheryl, she is a kind of a mix of Buffy St Marie, the Roches, and Joni Mitchell....a folk heroine!
-
I just read the synopsis on the Cinerama website:
Having graduated high school, mild-mannered science student, part-time photojournalist, Peter Parker--also known as the occasional web-spinning superhero, Spider-Man--is now attending college at Empire State University. Two new villains, Dr. Octopus and the Lizard, set out to ensure his demise. Complications ensue on the romantic front.
I have no idea where this synopsis came from, but there is no "Lizard" in this movie at all!
-
Maybe you went out for popcorn during that part DRGEORGE.
-
Isn't Susanne Blakeslee also Cruella......Cruella DeVille???
-
time for bed....Nytol
-
I just read the synopsis on the Cinerama website:
Two new villains, Dr. Octopus and the Lizard, set out to ensure his demise.
Even though his evil alter-ego doesn't appear in the movie, one of Peter Parker's professors, Dr. Curt Connors, does show up. He's doomed to become The Lizard.
By the way, the fellow Mary Jane Watson almost marries, the astronaut John Jameson, is doomed to become the Man-Wolf.
And of course, Harry Osbourne will become the Hobgoblin in the next movie.
How do I know all this stuff? Because I'm a geek, that's how!
-
Well, we didn't quite make a frenzy but we definitely made a fr.
-
Robin, thanks for the info! It also took me a while to realize that the astronaut was the newspaper editor's son.
After the movie ("Spider-Man 2") we all had lunch at Dick's Drive In. We then walked to the Seattle Center and went up the Space Needle! I hadn't been up there in so long...the last time I went, the gift shops were still on the observation deck!
Anyway, after that we went to Tower Records and I bought the CD archy and mehitabel: a back-alley opera, with Carol Channing, Eddie Bracken and David Wayne, which includes "echoes of archy," as well as "carnival of the animals" with noel coward (all the titles on the CD are in lower case). I also got the new recording, Fine and Dandy by Kay Swift and Paul James with Andrea Burns, Mario Cantone, Carolee Carmello, Gavin Creel and Mark Linn-Baker. Those will be in my CD player this weekend!
-
...Peter Parker...is now attending college at Empire State University.
That may be what they call it in the movie, but that beautiful campus you see in the film, with its classic beaux arts design (by the firm of McKim, Mead & White), is none other than Columbia University.
Roar, Lions, roar.
-
Eddie Korbich
-
Just thought I would throw that name into the mix.
I love to listen to EATING RAOUL....from DR NICK REDMAN and MRBK....and Mr Korbich is featured in several songs!
-
My particular favorite is MARY.
It's lucky I don't bake....
'cos what would cake without you be................
-
George what day are you thinking of? What are the hours of the Road Show?
The date of the Antiques Roadshow event is Saturday, August 21, 2004 but I don't know the hours. When I signed up for the raffle to get free tickets, they asked if I had a preference for the morning or afternoon. I chose either, thinking that it might give me a better chance. I got the tickets, didn't I? ;) Anyway, I would assume that they stagger the entrance times so that they can have an even flow of people throughout the day. The A.R. website says that one should arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before the entrance time on the ticket. I'll post when I get the tickets and what time I'm supposed to be there. I would think that we could meet in the evening. I don't think they have the event go too late into the evening.
-
At least, I would hope that they don't go too late into the evening.
