Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in Uranus, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - the cows are currently in Mars trying to figure out why they're not in Uranus.

Good night...anyone. 8)

Thinking about moving back to the valley next year.   It was even 80 degrees most weekends here at the beach, not much of a break from the valley weather which I tried to get away from.

Also really really miss the city a lot.   Miss being able to have everything interesting at my doorstep.

I've been waiting over 2 weeks now for the Blu-rays of "This is Cinerama" and "Windjammer". They were both above the import-free value limit so I suspect they've been held by Customs, in which case I will no doubt receive a bill before they can be released. :(

Get a pan of water, add three tablespoons of Italian dressing, boil the macaroni in the water.....then put it in a glass baking dish or pyrex bowl.  Add one can of tuna.....put four slices of Velveeta cheese on top along with some crushed potato chips - bake at 350 degrees for about twenty minutes.

TOD

Grew up eating one or two casseroles that my mom made a lot and I suspect they were some of my more favorite foods, but I don't remember what they were.  Probably tuna, but I don't know which kind of pasta or much of anything else.  (I remember a couple of my other favorite childhood dishes much more clearly.)

I've made only a couple of casseroles myself, which is ridiculous because they're simple and they can be such good comfort food, and they make great leftovers.  (I learned somewhat late in life to not just tolerate leftovers, but to actually love them -- as long as they are good ones and you reheat them right, because of course some things make lousy leftovers.)

In 1979-80 I took some between-jobs and between-apartments time and spent a few months on a friend's sailboat.  In sharing cooking duties and trying to come up with interesting and varied dishes, we came up with some good casseroles, one of which I've always meant to re-create, and I do have notes on it somewhere around here.  I think it was tuna, and it included black beans, but I need to flesh it out.

A good casserole ranks with the other great comfort foods, which is both the good and the bad news where my gluttonous appetite is concerned.  With comfort foods I just don't stop until it's coming out my ..... ears.  But I'm trying to do better on that, and I'm happy for this reminder of a wonderful foodstuff.

TOD: Casseroles? Mom used to make them, and in the best worst way possible. Open a can of cream o' something soup, add pasta and canned meat, some canned cheese and cook. That's the way it was back then. Of course, they tasted great, despite all the canned food involved. Maybe it was all the sodium.

Nowadays they have recipes for casseroles from scratch down to handmade pasta. That's a little too ridiculous, and frankly, they don't taste anywhere near as good.

Since I moved to Texas, I have discovered the local enchilada casseroles, with cheese enchiladas rolled up and laid out in the pan and then topped with sauce and, of course, more cheese. A gooey mess. And great.

That's the thing about comfort foods.  They rarely work when given the "gourmet" (for lack of a better word) treatment.  That's not what they're about.  Yes, one should stick close to a proven recipe, and much badness can be avoided or minimized, but you mustn't screw around with their basic character.

Casseroles:  Oh!  My!

My favorite casserole is a "Corn and Tomato" casserole.   Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.  Take a number 2 can of diced or crushed tomatoes (you'll use the liquid, as well), a (smaller-than-no.2-sized) can of white corn kernels (drain off the liquid), dice a medium or small (depending on how you like it) onion, cut up some green pepper and mix it all together in a bowl.  The green pepper is more "to taste" and for color.  You also need saltines...and most are packaged with either two bags or four bags (those longish, squarish bags).  Use HALF of one of those bags, crumble them all up and add to the mixture.

Grease (i.e., use butter) a casserole dish (the rectangular kind...not large, though***), add the mixture and dot the top with pats of butter.   Put into the pre-heated oven for 30 minutes.

Le voila!   A fabulous "go-with" that tastes absolutely scrumptious.

It's also better "the next day" after it has been refrigerated and re-heated.  I don't know why.

A friend of mine once visited and made a squash (yellow, crookneck) casserole.  That also involved onions plus a can of Campbell's cheddar cheese soup.  I didn't pay close attention at the time and have pleaded for the recipe over the past 30 years to no avail.  He says he doesn't remember it, but I can assure you there's no way he could forget it...it was absolute heaven on a fork.  Ah, well.

*** The size of the dish I use is "roughly" (or approximately) 10 inches long, 4.5- 5 inches long, and approximately 4.5 inches deep.

Had a very fun time last night.

Traffic was good so I made it to Lake Oswego in just under and hour. Amazing, for 5 o'clock traffic!

As I drove up to former DR JMK's home, I saw him drive away. My first thought was "Uh, oh, he saw me coming." But come to find out he was just heading to Portland to pick up former DR Edisaurus and her everlovin' Greg. So I visited with JMK's wife Betsy until they returned.

For those who have met her, I don't have to tell you how delightful and charming Betsy is! And oh, what a great cook! Main dish was a meatless spaghetti with almonds. I believe I had two or three helpings, it was quite yummilicous!  ;D

Dessert was coffee cake...next to chocolate, this is my favorite kind of cake!

Finally meeting former DR Edisaurus and her everlovin' DH Greg was such a wonderful thing! Fine people, the both of them! I hope they have great fun exploring Portland today and much success with the new documentary "Doc Pomus." I am very disappointed at not being able to attend the showing on Friday night  :(

One additional highlight was visiting, petting, and hugging dogs Beejee and Blanche! Such beauties! I wanted to take them both home with me!! Normally JMK locks them up in the dungeon when guests come over, for fear of them slobbering on people...however, I begged Betsy to let them roam free with us for the entire evening! Oh gosh, I just love those two dogs!

This weekend I will post photographic evidence of our get-together!

Of course, when DougR mentions that gas in his country is close to $10.00 a gallon...well, I guess I can't complain too much! Yikes!

I signed a contract for an audio version about 10 days ago.  The actress lives in Tacoma.  I'm hoping to get the first 15 minutes by the end of this month.  Then, I will give her notes, and we will continue.

The audio version of my Orson Welles play, however, is now complete and, unless ACX finds a technical problem, it should be up for sale in a week or two.

Maybe actress isn't the correct word in this case.  Perhaps I should have said, the talent.

Druxy, I asked the other day if there was an audiobook of your one-woman play, LOMBARD.

The actress, Judy Cullen, is a good friend of mine.  She has a great voice.

I didn't mention her name....

 ::)

...but it is Judy Cullen.

 :)

She gave an excellent audition, and I am looking forward to working with her.

I have a meeting at 10:15 in the morning and I need to get there earlier so that I can make sure that everyone who wants/needs to be there will be there.  And I'm still up and I have a freakin' meetin' at ten in the mornin'!  But now I must sleep.

Good night...anyone. 8)

Well, I made it to work with plenty of time to get ready for the meeting.  It was just more of an informational exchange.  One of our book vendors (a subsidiary of a family-owned business) was sold to another of our book vendors and the transition is happening now.  We loved the company that's being sold and although the company that bought it is good, the original company's customer service is much better than the buying company's customer service...they're not bad by any means, but they're just not as accommodating as the soon-to-be-no-longer-existing company's. ::)

Capital Playhouse's production of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (http://www.capitalplayhouse.com/).

I have never seen a production of the show, although I really like the cast CD and I bought a souvenir book of the show so I could look at the pictures.

Hi All,

I don't usually post, mostly because I don't really have anything to say worth hearing.  But today I think I'm going to make an exception.  Someone sent the link below to me, and I think that some of the folks here might be interested in seeing it.  Be forewarned:  the video is very difficult to watch, at least it was for me.  But those closest to her want people to see it, so I'm doing my small bit to get the word out.  It broke my heart to see it, so if you're not up to it, don't click on the link.

I still wish I hadn't watched it.

Jrand62,

I feel the same way.  Still, I believe that it's worth seeing.  I think we're often isolated from unpleasantness to the point where we don't always do what what we might to help.  I was ambivalent about posting the link last night but finally decided today that it was the right thing to do, as long as I warned people beforehand how difficult it is to watch.

No, it's pronounced just like the "s" in the city name "Brussels".

Thing is, when you hear someone pronounce it, the two esses are sounded as one:  "Brusselsprouts." There are really two esses, but unless someone over-enunciates the words, you only hear the "s" once.

If the City of Flanders had some seals, you would probably tell your friends you saw "Flanders seals" but it would sound like "Flanderseals"

If you had shingles on your house made in Sweden, they would be "Swedish shingles", but it would sound like "Swedishingles".

And let me tell you, "Swedish ingles" are something entirely different from "Swedish shingles".

I'm envious.  :)

Thursday evening greetings from HOME!

Today is 10-11-12.

One year ago today was our first day in Paris.  Today we were in Cleveland until about 2:30pm and then we had a long drive home, due to some major traffic back-ups on I-71.

Gas is 4.97 a gallon on the corner where I live, glad today is payday, need to fill the tank.

Think yourself lucky. This side of the pond it's the equivalent of about $9.70 a gallon.

:o

I knew that it was more expensive than in the US, but I didn't realize that it was that much more expensive.

I know...they really haven't updated their show photos since before last season.

DR TCB, cheese in a can is that stuff Kraft calls Parmesan, but no Italian would ever recognize. It has its uses. And casseroles are one.

I attended a funeral today where one of the grieving family members looked like Mr. Barry Pearl.

The music was painful to hear. Truly.

From DR TCB:

Nicky had a urinary blockage that could have killed him if we hadn't gotten it taken care of in time.  They knocked him out, managed to drain the bladder and remove some backed up poop, and I was able to bring him home.  He didn;t speak to me for the rest of the day, but he is much better today.

We have been there and know how horrible ithat is.  How is Nicky today?

He seems to be getting better all the time, and his appetite is back to normal.  However, every time he hears a noise he thinks someone is coming to take him to the vet again.

The newest Bollywood hit film BARFI! has been playing all week at Clackamas Town Center Theater and I didn't know it! Dang...it ends tonight.

I am told it is quite good and has shades of THE NOTEBOOK.

Here is the trailer...DR Jane, I think you will like this much more than the E.T. remake1

It is also to be India's entrant for the Oscars.

I would rather see India's E.T.

my favorite casserole is the ahm casserole my grandfather would make ---

the best is use the left over Christmas or Easter ham!

butter sides  of casserole dish

mince up left over ham
boil broad egg noodles until soft
melt some butter into the noodles
take a quart of sour cream and break an egg into it and mix it up until well blended
combine noodles ham and sour cream mixture (reserve a little of the sour cream)
put in the casserole dish, spread the remaining sourcream on top  and sprinkle with bread crumbs, dot with butter put in oven at 425 until brown and bubbly

serve with more sour cream

sooooooooooooooooo good

Ron":  you could add asparagus  to the mixture before baking

chicken casserole:

mince up leftover chicken

boil broad egg noodles in chicken broth or boullion

sauteed thinly sliced sweet onion and sliced mushrooms or button mushrooms in  a little butter

mix them all together and add a can or cream of mushroom  or cream of chicken soup

you can add peas, or asparagus or sliced carrots, as you choose

sprinkle some bread crumbs on top and bake at 400 until firm and bubbly

Oddly, I am drinking a Stewart's Cream Soda.  I say oddly, because (1) I haven't had a cream soda since I was a kid, and (2) I'm on record as saying they're too cloying for me, though I'm absolutely crazy about root beers and such.  Well, I was a little thirsty and also needed something sweet, and someone had left a couple of bottles of this here, so... here I am, enjoying a Stewart's Cream Soda.  And I normally drink diet sodas, which this is not, but hey, it's a treat.

BABY JANE is on TCM and I think I'm going to call it a night by falling asleep to it.

I'm interested in the next thing coming up, another Robert Aldrich film called  LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE (1968) which I know nothing about except that it stars Kim Novak, Peter Finch, and Ernest Borgnine.  I might be the last person in the U.S. of A. with no DVR, so I can't record it.  But I see it's in the Warner Archive.

Tonight, I had a dream come true... and a new job.  I've always wanted to play piano in a restaurant.  We have a small local chain of restaurants in the Bay Area that had a chain of "Opera" Cafe's where the waiters/waitresses sang.  Over the years, the singing became less and less and recently, the pianists sang as well as played.  Well, to make a long story short, I "Auditioned" this eve, played and sang and accompanied some people, and got a position there playing on Saturday nights starting in November.  I'm really excited to finally get to be able to do something like this.

How did I get in?   Well, I guess I can mention that the DP is leaving the Four Seasons Hotel to take a job as Bakery Manager for Max's Restaurants here in the Bay Area.  Same people that have the aforementioned "Opera" cafes.  He will over see the bakery for the restaurants as well as their wholesale and catering departments.  It's a great move for him financially and for his career.  It's a great position for lots of room for growth and incentives.

And these are the days of our lives.
