Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the best of intentions, and now it is time for you to post until the best-intentioned cows come home.

TOD:

I've usually always had a bicycle. I was about 10 when I had my first one which was second hand and I can remember learing to ride it in the road outside my house (there were few cars in those days). In my 20s I was living in a city in the north of England but it was very hilly so I didn't use a cycle there. Coming back to London I cycled all over town and for very many years I cycled 20 miles every day to and from work.  I'm lazy now and drive everywhere!

Good morning, all! I was not up so late as I feared, abd I slept rather well. By 11pm I figured that I'd heard enough of the debate commentary andturned off the lights.  I can't imagine that Mitt is doing too well with his supporters this morning; I suspect he agreed just a bit too much with the President on issues, but it's always fun watching him do somersaults, jump through hoops and do everything short of pulling balloons out of his ass to cozy up to potential voters. I still don't know what his policies are beyond protecting the rich and looking down on us poor folk; they seem to change every debate.

I will shortly be off to Toyland and that's my day.

I had several bikes through gradeschool and high school, all Huffys, as I recall. When I was in college, I had a wonderful bike whose manufacturer I no longer recall. I also owned a bike between 1973 and 1979 that got me around Middletown for fun and, on occasion, when my car died.

Off to work.   Have a wonderful day everyone.

Great pictures yesterday, maybe I should move somewhere closer to trees.  In the hills near where I work.  That would be nice.

I have nothing else to say.  Great night of sleep, and I am very foggy right now.  It feels good.

I have a bike. It is in the storage room. I bought it because my birding buddy and I were going to take them to New Mexico last year so we could move quickly around the wildlife preserve we planned on visiting. Sadly, she broke her shoulder and couldn't ride. Maybe this year.

TOD: I got my first bike when I was about 5. It was a hand-me-down from the girl down the street, who had gotten it from her older brothers, etc. It did not have training wheels on it, so my sister was nice enough to hold it for me -- for about five minutes. Then it was pedal or fall. So I pedaled.

Another one of their hand-me-downs was a black Schwinn that I loved. It had bars across the middle that you could stand on while coasting. I used to love to do that down the street. Couldn't do it now as there are speed bumps everywhere.

I have a stationary bike now and I need to use it more. But it's boring, even if I'm reading and watching a movie while on it.

TCB, regarding your Brent Barrett comments last night: You can tell in that clip from "Grand Hotel," which I have watched dozens of times, that Jeter's character (or maybe just Jeter) is swooning, too. Barrett is certainly stunning. And he has that ineffable ham charm. The reason I would need to see his "Kiss Me, Kate" again would be to see if he could accomplish what Alfred Drake did in a severely truncated version of the show: He almost made me cry at Fred's reprise of "So in Love." In that moment, the ego was stripped bare, the heartbreak was there. He was genuinely moving in a show that's more known for its wit than his heart.

I do not recall my first bike, although I am sure it had 3 wheels.

I do recall my parents buying me a bike at K-Mart when I was in in 5th grade. It was after we moved from Medford to Central Point. Central Point was sort of like Mayberry RFD and I rode all over the place...to the Library where I first read bios of Judy Garland and Groucho Marx...to the store that sold Goldfish...to the Stamp and Coin Shop...to my buddy Dave's house...to the Rock Museum...to the Pharmacy where I would buy my issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland and Marvel comic books.

Only thing I remember about the bike is that it was one of those with a banana seat, which was all the rage in 1975.

TOD:

I had a tricycle when I was little, but I don't know much more about that.

When I was 7, my grandfather gave me a bicycle for Christmas.  It was as high as I was tall (as I recall).  I was excited but confused.  When I was lifted onto the seat, my feet wouldn't reach the pedals.   At some point during the day, the bicycle disappeared with my grandfather.  Later, he reappeared with a smaller bicycle, much-used with faded paint.  I was disappointed I was getting someone's seconds (or thirds), but it was pointed out to me (by my mother, in private, in my bedroom) that this bicycle was better for me because I could actually learn to ride it.  I did learn to ride it, and after a while, I loved it dearly.

For my 8th birthday, Santa brought me a big boy's bicycle...all shiny (red) and with multi-colored streamers on the ends of each hand grip.  I had grown quite a bit since the year before and I was able to mount the bicycle from my front porch steps.  My feet reached the pedals and generally stayed on them as I rode down the street with only the occasional wobble.

That was my last bicycle at home and it lasted quite a few years.  I don't know when or why I stopped riding.

My next bicycle came a number of years later when I was in the Navy and assigned to Vicenza, Italy (1973-75).   When I finally found an apartment, transportation was my main concern.  I could walk to work (it would take about 25 minutes), but Vicenza was a northern climate and when it was cold it was COLD.  I bought a bicycle that served me extremely well during my time there.  In addition, I bought a 1963 Fiat 1300 from my Italian teacher's father.  It ran "most of the time" and was great during really inclement weather, but the bicycle was my go-to transportation because of its maneuverability and the easiness of parking it anywhere.  Additionally, Vicenza would often have days of extremely dense fog and bicycling around made me feel safer than driving.

After I left Vicenza, I never bought another bicycle.  I'm figuring that when I retire, I'll probably bicycle around Johnston SC quite a bit, so I have that to look forward to.

In high school, after my parents divorced and we moved back to Medford, I somehow ended up with a different bike. My mom and stepdad were not the kind of parents that would drive their kid around, so I rode my bike all over,  usually just so that I would not have to be home with my evil step-father.

I would ride from our house in SE Medford to my buddy Dave's house in Central Point...that is quite a trek! A bike trail was built in Medford that started at a park near my home and ended at the other end of town. It bordered the creek that runs through Medford and is rather hidden from view, so it is no longer a safe place to ride...probably it wasn't back then either, for all I know.

When I moved in with my dad and step-mom in White City, I continued riding my bike to Central Point...still a long trip, although more often than not Dave's parents would drive out and pick me up and take me back home.

LOL!  My bicycle in Vicenza, Italy, was also useful when my Fiat 1300 would die (and it "would" die from time to time).  I have a vivid memory of driving down the street outside Caserma Italy (the compound where I worked) in the rain, holding an umbrella and braking suddenly, only to find myself hydroplaning around several stopped cars.  Rattled my cage, it did, but I was safe nonetheless.

I didn't much like what the revisal of KISS ME, KATE did to the score so I've never seen the London production with Brent, nor have any inclination to do so.

DR John G, I didn't understand your Howard Keel comment: the newly released broadcast of KISS ME, KATE is the kinescope of the Hallmark Hall of Fame production. I don't like the film because of one casting disaster: Kathryn "I have no vocal skills" Grayson.

Well, Elmore, I think it goes without saying that even the wallpaper would do a better job than Kathryn Grayson. And Patricia Morison was wonderful, great voice and fine comic flair. But Drake  was so much better than Keel, the guy who got too many of his roles when it came time to make the movie, that I don't know if I realized just how well written the part of Fred really is.

I was not allowed to ride my bike too far, which is something of a shame. I think I would know my hometown more than I do if I had been allowed to roam free. It's kinda funny, too, because my mom is full of stories about how she rode her bike across southern Germany when she was a teen. Still, she's talking country roads, not busy city streets.

TOD:

My first bicycle was a hand-me-down from my cousin.  It was blue and sturdy and had pedal breaks and a built-in light.

I had just taught myself to ride a two wheeler with my sister's bike by repeatedly riding it down a hill until I was able to balance, steer and pedal at the same time without running into the fence at the bottom of the hill.

I loved having my own bike and roaming around with friends.  But I did have restrictions on how far I was allowed to go (never into downtown Camden and never towards the river!)

When we moved to Pennsauken, my parents let me choose a brand new bike at a Toys'R'Us.  I got an orange Schwinn.  I guess my parents believed that the suburbs were much safer than Camden because they let me head off wherever I wanted.

That bike was passed on to the Goodwill during my college years.  I keep in practice by renting a bike to ride on the boardwalk when I stay at the shore during the summer.

DR JRand, the Kindle is equipped with built-in wireless, which allows you to download books directly to the device.  Conventional wisdom, though, recommends that you keep the wireless turned OFF when you're not downloading to preserve your battery.  Also, if you've borrowed an ebook from your library it doesn't disappear from your Kindle, even after the due date, until you turn the wireless on.

Depends on what kind of Kindle you have.  Mine's 2 years old now and only black and white.  The pictures are OK.  Rob has the Kindle Fire, which is more tablet-like and does a better job with graphics.

I especially love my Kindle for traveling.  In fact, I just bought a duplicate of the book that my group is reading for November and December - Robert Massie's bio of Catherine the Great.  I'd bought the huge paperback last month, but didn't want to lug it to Indianapolis.  It's now on my Kindle, too, and the e-version cost almost as much as the dead tree version.

I stopped at Penn Station and got my train tickets, and now I am home and dealing with emails.

DR JRand62, my sister-in-law and DR Ginny may be crazy about the Kindle, but I am much happier holding a book and turning a page.

Speaking of books, this A GOOD AND HAPPY CHILD by Justin Evans is getting good and creepy. I have no idea where it's going, but it's creeping me out. If you like a chilly read, I recommend it.

Speaking of Mr. Barrett, I wonder if DR Kevin will be dropping by NYC next Monday?

I got a license renewal form today - have to go down there to renew, but I don't have to take a written test - just the eye test and fingerprint.  On the back it says call for an appointment.  I called.  I think I got one, but they said the confirmation number so fast that I couldn't write it down and nothing I did would work to get it repeated.  Plus, how in HELL do they even know who I am - it never asked for my name, just where I wanted to make the appointment.  Now I'm waiting for a "phone technician" to call me back.  It's almost an hour wait time so I fear the jog isn't happening today, since I was going to go right after I'd made the appointment.  Ridiculous.  So now I'm stuck here until they call back.  If that's by three, I could still go do a two-mile jog so hopefully it will be.

Time for dinner.

Tomorrow morning, I will do laundry while I wait for UPS. I've got new sheets, and a couple of new shirts and pants, so if I do laundry tomorrow, life will be easier over the weekend. I've got a Jerome Moross score to proof as well as more ROBERTA work.

I am thinking about getting a Kindle.  But....is it a wireless device?  Do you download books to your computer and then put them on your kindle?  Or do you have to have a wireless router to buy books directly onto your Kindle?

With my Kindle, it has Wifi.  I download the books directly from Amazon onto my Kindle.  It is usually there in about three minutes.

I might have been seven when I got my first bike.  My mother put me on the bike, ran full speed, and let go.  Totally surprised she did this, and unable to control the bike I crashed hard into the bushes.  I think it took me a year or two to ride my bike.  It totally destroyed my trust in anyone hold the back of the bike.  Finally my sister gave me a gift of a box set of pretty pencils in various colors.  She then said if I didn't go out and ride my bike she would take the gift back.  Guess what I immediately did :)

I rode my bike everywhere, all over the Hills of Cheviot and beyond.   My parents would never get me a 3 speed bike as my brother & sister's bikes had been left to rust.  I rode that bike until I was about 15 when my sister, who only had a rusted bike so rode mine, said my bike had a flat tire and she left it someplace on Pico Blvd.  She wouldn't drive back to get it and that was the end of my bike.

I guess I should have never brought up Brent Barrett and / or his performance in the DVD of KISS ME KATE.  I said it more in jest, because (sorry John) I don't care for Alfred Drake in anything.  I happen to be a fan of Brent's, not only because of his fine singing voice, but also because he is a damn nice gentleman in person.  I also happen to like ham chunks, cheese slices, and cranberries.

I am cooking a roast for dinner tonight, but I guess I will have to go without mashed potatoes.  While trying to get the roast out of its packaging, I attempted to slice off the very tip of my thumb.  I got it to stop bleeding right away, but everytime I start trying to do anything in the kitchen with my hands, it starts to bleed again.  Washing and scrubbing the potatoes seems a bit beyond my abilities for the day.

As others have said some kindles are 3G and some you need wifi to get the books but not to read them. When you buy from amazon you buy the ebook then turn on your kindle's wifi and the ebook is there. But there is such a thing as sideloading where you have the ebook on your computer and then you plug your kindle into your computer.

My father did not like them (I think he had a friend who was killed on one), so we never had one...until neither of my parents wanted to drive my brother to summer football practice at six in the morning, so he got a bike from a relative or somewhere, but by that time I didn't care and would've have probably never learned to balance myself on one anyway.  And, frankly, I was kind of in my father's camp.  I liked something with sides around me.

I wonder if they've stopped giving the written tests to people who already have licenses simply because they need the revenue.  When I moved to Kentucky, I didn't have to take a written test, just an eye exam.
