Good morning, all! I was up at 5:07 and all I need to do is make the bed and finish packing. I'm taking very little, basiclally an overnight kit, change of clothes, and the book I'm reading. I have my ticket, so I'm set.

DR MBarnum, in answer to your question about why no one ever discusses your reading material, it's because the rest of finished DICK AND JANE BUY THE FARM weeks ago, and we're waiting for you to catch up.

Thank you all for the travel vibes last nght!  I'm hoping that I can locate the libretti I need to photocopy. I'm going to look through the ROBERTA cartons in the Kern Collection to see if I missed something important: a note, a sketch, whatever. I'll check in from my hotel at some point.

Driving home last night from the hospital I got caught in a hurricane like rain storm. I drove very slowly for a few miles and then it stopped. But looking in my rearview I could still see the storm.

In other news, a popular Indian comedian was killed in an auto accident yesterday. Punjabi language cinema favorite Jaspal Bhatti died in the wreck when the car he was riding in hit a tree.

(http://images.mid-day.com/2012/oct/Jaspal-Bhatti.jpg)

He and other cast members were traveling to promote his latest comedy film which opens on Friday, and which he also produced and directed, titled POWER CUT.

The film's leading man Jasraj Bhatti and the leading lady Suril Gautam (this is the first film for each) were both seriously injured along with another passenger who may or may not be an actor in the film (none of the news reports mention who he was).

Very sad. He was a very, very funny guy, and I imagine the film's opening will be rather bittersweet. I do hope the injured performers make a full recovery.

The Russians (or whoever is sending it out) must be working overtime because both Anthony, his mother and I have been getting tons of spam in the past few days. Like you said, it can be 15 or 20 or more in an hour. It seems to go in cycles and we're in one right now.

Good morning.  I've been to Costco and back hoping to get new tires, and it turns out they don't carry my size so I had to order them (and pay for them).  They should be here in a few days.

Tomorrow, the DP and I are heading up to Lake Tahoe for the weekend.  We are seeing Leon Russell in concert.  I, of course, have heard of him, but the DP has not and so far is not impressed.  I heard it's a good show.  I'll definitely report back.

Today I'm meeting with the lyricist on the musical that he has written and I'll play 2 songs for him that I set to music in the last few weeks.  Hopefully it will go well and we can continue the process.  He has written lyrics for 18 songs in this musical, which I'm thinking will be more of a "song cycle".  We shall see....

And in more unrelated news:

I watched the final presidential debate and I must say that my favorite part is when the families of the two debators come onstage and everyone is nice to everyone else. It warms my heart.

My favorite was when one of Romney's little grandson who couldn't be more than 4  years old was chatting up Obama. It was adorable. Such a cute kid and the president seemed like he was having fun listening intently to the little guy.

Also, in past appearences I have loved the dresses that the first lady wore, but this time around I thought Mrs. Romney's dress was fantastic! Loved the colors and loved the style!

Just discovered that my high school geometry and physics teacher, Paul Gaddie, died. I thought he was old when I had him in 10th grade. If I do the math right, he would have been 29 then. I guess that used to be old.

I remember that he didn't suffer too many fools gladly, and the cardinal sin in his book was that you didn't fall asleep in class. Otherwise he would take a cattle prod out and head for the student. The student usually woke up before this happened, so there was no problem. Well, one day, a kid didn't wake up by the time that Mr. Gaddie reached his spot, and he jolted the kid. The kid threatened to sue, and that was the last time the cattle prod was seen.

DR JohnG, that makes me curious about something...how many here are Facebook friends with any of their former teachers?

I am FB friends with my old Theatre Arts teacher from High School. It has been such fun catching up with her, and she is thrilled to hear from past students, including many who were in her classes and plays at the same time I was...which would account for the majority of my High School friends.

One of these day I am going to scan all the old photos from the plays we put on during that period and post them on Facebook. But I don't think I will ever let that teacher know of the monkey shines that went on behind her back when she took a group of us to that drama competition up to Lake Oswego in 1982 (even though I do have photographic evidence of much of it)!

No doubt many of my other high school teachers are on Facebook, but can't think of many I would care all that much to catch up with...grade school, yes...but most of those teachers are probably long gone.
Title: Re: COMFORT FOOD
Post by: MBarnum on October 25, 2012, 12:57:26 PM
What made me think of all of that was JohnG's remark about his teacher's age. I had thought my drama teacher was in her 40s or 50s when I was in school..turns out she was only in her early 30s or so.

Tomorrow, the DP and I are heading up to Lake Tahoe for the weekend.  We are seeing Leon Russell in concert.  I, of course, have heard of him, but the DP has not and so far is not impressed.  I heard it's a good show.  I'll definitely report back.

Matthew, I hope things are better, between you and your DP, now that the Frankenfriend has gone.

Oh, DR TBC, that's a whole different story   LOL

And in more unrelated news:

I watched the final presidential debate and I must say that my favorite part is when the families of the two debators come onstage and everyone is nice to everyone else. It warms my heart.

My favorite was when one of Romney's little grandson who couldn't be more than 4  years old was chatting up Obama. It was adorable. Such a cute kid and the president seemed like he was having fun listening intently to the little guy.

That was because the little boy was telling the President of the United States, "Your wife looks just our nanny."

MBarnum, there's a place just back of the office that I tried for the first time today. (I don't usually leave campus for lunch.) Anyway, it's called India Chaat and it had wonderful Indian street food for lunch. And there were previews of upcoming Bollywood movies as well as musical numbers from some of the films playing on the big screen. The walls also had several pictures of Bollywood stars on the walls.

It is your own damn fault John, if MBarnum and all of his stuff is camped on your porch come Monday morning!

Tod: rye bread. Butter. Radishes.Swiss cheese. Maybe charcuterie.all together with cornichons and olives on the side.

Does this dish have a name?

Radish sandwiches? I dunno. It's what we would eat for breakfast in Germany. I eat it whenever I have to toss something together quickly.

Interesting.  I have never heard of the combination before.

I will go back, but mostly because the food was really good. There was only one dish I wasn't thrilled with: sev puri, which tasted like fried carbs. But the chicken curry had a whole cardamom pod in it, and that flavor was driving me crazy. Also a good lentil dish and roti.

In other news, a popular Indian comedian was killed in an auto accident yesterday. Punjabi language cinema favorite Jaspal Bhatti died in the wreck when the car he was riding in hit a tree.

Very sad. He was a very, very funny guy, and I imagine the film's opening will be rather bittersweet. I do hope the injured performers make a full recovery.

My condolences to his family & many fans.

I hope you and your DP have a good trip together!

About five radish dishes, then stuff for the poeple who don't like radishes. But many of the guests tried to outdo each other with the inventive radish dishes they would come up with. Terrines, Indian-style curries with lamb, lentils and radishes, you name it. I once braised short ribs in a mix of celery, onion and radishes with a touch of garlic.

I am FB friends with my old Theatre Arts teacher from High School. It has been such fun catching up with her, and she is thrilled to hear from past students, including many who were in her classes and plays at the same time I was...which would account for the majority of my High School friends.

No doubt many of my other high school teachers are on Facebook, but can't think of many I would care all that much to catch up with...grade school, yes...but most of those teachers are probably long gone.

I am Facebook friends with one of my favorite college drama professors, who now lives in Oregon.  He is married to my college sweetheart.  My other favorite professors have all passed away.

That is a scary sounding storm.

It sure is.  My friend who was hit hard by Irene just last week completed the last of her repairs and got her bathroom fixed.

Following is a portion of the warning she received today:

This storm is very serious, and although there is time for things to change it is important to know that this storm will likely be larger then Irene is size, more powerful then Irene and move slower then Irene, it is a completely different monster and should not be taken lightly.

I don't think that it's the bacon that makes rice fluffy.  You probably just need to experiment a few more times...especially if it tastes fine.

Yes, but it adds extra liquid.  I sauteed onions & celery in butter.  I think I need more water & less butter.  When returned for seconds, and thirds, each time it was somewhat fluffier. :)

DR Cillaliz what did the new cat sitter have to say for herself? While it wasn't nice of her to move your bills without asking I am much more disturbed by how Callie was when you got back. She did not call to tell you of these problems?  That is really bad. Poor kitties!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jennifer, she cleaned a little too, she said she was just trying to help me organize, something we talked about doing in the future, when I was home.  She had trouble the first night with callie and said she didn't call because she didn't want to interrupt my trip.  Then I asked why she didn't clean her off and she said she just figured Callie would do it herself.  This is sticky liquid that dries very hard.  You can't brush it out you have to get a wet rag and loosen it up.
She probably had good intentions, but what she really wants is me to hire her to work on my house. I told her that's not what I asked her to do, I asked her to care for the cats. She said she knew that, but she wanted to make the house nice for me.
Not really, once in awhile the dropper drips a little on her coat and I just wipe it off right away with a wet paper towel and it's fine.  She told me Callie turned her head so it went all over her.    Callie can be stubborn and I don't doubt that.  And she has a hiding place I can't find, so I'm sure that was probably happening too.  She did tell me she thought it would be easy and it wasn't.  I get all that and I'm not mad, but she also told me Callie was acting really funny on Sunday morning.  That's when she should have called me and told me what was going on.  She said again she didn't want to interrupt my trip, but I told her I could have either told her what to do or told her to take Callie to the vet.  She said she didn't think of that.
(Sorry if this is a bit graphic).   I stayed with her and cleaned her up and brushed her.  Just before bed she ate some food and kept it down and she was much better in the morning.   I'm afraid to think of what would happened if I had been gone another day
DR Cillaliz what did the new cat sitter have to say for herself? While it wasn't nice of her to move your bills without asking I am much more disturbed by how Callie was when you got back. She did not call to tell you of these problems?  That is really bad. Poor kitties!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jennifer, she cleaned a little too, she said she was just trying to help me organize, something we talked about doing in the future, when I was home.  She had trouble the first night with callie and said she didn't call because she didn't want to interrupt my trip.  Then I asked why she didn't clean her off and she said she just figured Callie would do it herself.  This is sticky liquid that dries very hard.  You can't brush it out you have to get a wet rag and loosen it up.

She probably had good intentions, but what she really wants is me to hire her to work on my house. I told her that's not what I asked her to do, I asked her to care for the cats. She said she knew that, but she wanted to make the house nice for me.

I am sorry, Cilla, but is sounds like you are at cross purposes with the woman.

Yeah I know.  I was too angry to write about it earlier.  I'm not angry anymore so now I can talk about it

Callie wasn't well when I got home.   She was hissing and howling at me, something she just doesn't do and I've never seen her act the way she was acting in the 10 years she's lived with me.  I stayed wtih her but gave her space and just talked to her for about an hour, then ran to the grocery store.  She had calmed a little when I got home and let me start to clean her off.  Then she started throwing up. (Sorry if this is a bit graphic).   I stayed with her and cleaned her up and brushed her.  Just before bed she ate some food and kept it down and she was much better in the morning.   I'm afraid to think of what would happened if I had been gone another day

As I said, scary and very upsetting for you.  I'm impressed you didn't yell at the sitter.

I didn't say I didn't yell at the sitter :)

ROTFLOL!

I am back from a ver-r-r-ry long day riding on a bus from Lebanon, OH, to Nelsonville, OH, and back, with a lunch stop in Logan, OH, and a ride on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway (http://www.hvsry.org).  I told my Mother and Dolores the next time they want to go on a day trip, I'll drive them.

UPDATE! Just talked to Larry. Sharon is doing well. She is up, and even smiling! Her attitude is good, and falls in line with the Sharon we know, love and respect. However, she is still isolated, so no visitors. He sounded great. I will keep you up to date!

I heard she may get out of the hospital around Thanksgiving

For what she has been through Thanksgiving sounds pretty good.

VIBES SHE WILL BE STRONGER EVERY DAY!!

I tried a friend's recipe for a wild rice casserole.  Mine didn't come out all fluffy likes his.  Either I don't begin with the best rice, I did something wrong, or I'm missing his secret ingredient of bacon.

Ahh...I've never really cooked rice, so I really don't know.

The hissing and howling would seem to suggest that Callie was either mistreated or, at least, frightened by that woman and that she blames you for whatever happened because you left her with that person.

I'm home, not watching the baseball game, though, the DP got the TV  before I did and there is no interest there, only if the Giants win.  So, through Facebook and the iPhone, I'm keeping up.

My meeting with the lyricist was great.   I have 3 more lyrics to set, 2 are ballads which can be tough.  He liked what I had so far and we agreed that one of the songs was good the way it was and the other could use a little more work.  I'm enjoying this process and creativity.  I'll be sure to thank HHW and it's denizens in the cast recording booklet.  :)

Rice is easy to cook, 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water.  Bring to a boil, stirring so it doesn't stick, then cover and let simmer for 15 minutes or until it's the consistency you want it.

Thanks Laura.   I was very upset, but the cats are all fine....well Boo is limping, but that started today.  She was better about it tonight and has been sleeping on the couch all evening, so I'm hoping it will get better without having to go to the vet

That's what I think.  I had her bring my house key back right away and I have no intention of asking her to come over either for the cats or to clean

Edith and I were talking about ways to increase productivity without hiring new staff this week and we decided to go from one monitor to two.  Her computer was set up to do it but mine wasn't.  However, since tomorrow is the start of Windows 8, I was able to get a really good deal on a Windows 7 machine.   I spent 1/2 a day transferring and setting up my new computer and monitors and getting her second monitor installed.  It's really cool!  I am so glad I did it.

Well, Cillaliz, unplug your phone or turn off the ringer. Don't watch tv or listen to the radio. You can avoid most of it that way. It's what I've been doing for the last six months.
