Well, you've read the notes, the notes were breezy, and now it is time for you to post until the breezy cows come home.

And the word of the day is: CANTRIP!

And the new Kritzerland CD is:
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
Kritzerland is proud to present its latest release – a brand new, shiny holiday treat wrapped up in a beautiful and talented singer!
SANDY BAINUM
THIS CHRISTMAS
It’s a Kritzerland Christmas this season, with singer Sandy Bainum. This Christmas will put you in the Christmas spirit all year ‘round, with such classics as “Happy Holiday/White Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” “Sleigh Ride,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and other great Yuletide hits, including several new Christmas songs to warm your heart, and some Christmas songs from Broadway musicals that will surprise and delight you.
Sandy Bainum made the leap from small town Pennsylvania to Broadway when she was hired for the chorus of David Merrick’s legendary production of 42nd Street. Within just a week, she’d clinched the role of Lorraine and was the understudy for the plum role of Annie. Not long after, she took over the part of Annie, a role she continued to play on tour, and ultimately in the Broadway company. During a stop at Washington’s National Theatre, Sandy was noticed, wooed and eventually won by then Maryland State Senator Stewart Bainum, who brought her to Washington and a new phase of her busy career.
Over the past several years, Sandy, a classically trained coloratura soprano and dancer, has performed at many of Washington’s top theatrical venues. At the Kennedy Center she appeared in a solo concert on the Millennium Stage honoring Roger Stevens, founder of the Kennedy Center, on the anniversary of his 100th birthday, as well as in Regina with Patti LuPone, and Celebrate Broadway. At The Washington Savoyards, Sandy performed the lead in Kiss Me Kate and Marion in The Music Man for which she received a nomination for the 2010 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical. She garnered excellent reviews as Ellie in Showboat for the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, where the cast was nominated for a 2010 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical. Also at the Signature, Sandy appeared in a production of Sunset Boulevard in 2011. She played the featured roles of Sally Slaton and Mrs. Phagan in the Ford’s Theatre’s production of Parade and most recently she appeared as Gertrude and the gravedigger in an innovative production of Hamlet for DC’s Fringe Festival. She has recently done her new cabaret show, Something to Sing About in New York, Washington, and Los Angeles.
This Christmas is produced by Bruce Kimmel, with musical direction, arrangements, and orchestrations by Lanny Meyers. Scored for full orchestra, the album is a great big, beautiful, heartfelt, and fun look at the sights and sounds of Christmas. It’s a perfect stocking stuffer and an album that’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit.
The price is $17.98 (plus shipping). CDs will ship by the first week of December – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.
Sandy will be performing songs from This Christmas at the Signature Theater in Washington on December 3, and at The Metropolitan Room on December 17 to launch the CD.

Good morning, all.
Hope I can stay awake today. Took half a Benedryl last night and I can still feel it in my system.
Safe vibes again for all those in Sandy's path.

TOD:
There were ice storms when I lived in upstate New York that scared me when I got out on the road. One time I didn't realize how icy it was as I was driving down the mountain from Windham. Slid right past my exit. Then when I finally got onto my street, I couldn't even make it up the slight incline to my house. My car slid off the road into a friend's front yard and I stayed there until they finally came and iced the road. Because the town's top Democrats lived on that road, it was always the last one treated in that county of Republicans.
-
It's quiet in Manhattan right now. Who knows what will happen as the day goes on. I'm at the office and will stay for a while and then leave the computer on and work using Remote Desktop.
Later.

Goodmorning.
Safe vibes for everyone on the East Coast.

Nice hot day yesterday, really nice full moon right now.
Off to work.
;D

Did manage to listen to one cd yesterday. That was nice.
Sports are ok, at least I did get my laundry done while baseball and football were on.
It's cold right now, what a treat.
Oh yea, Holloween on Wednesday. 8)

Must order cd's tonight. Think I will stay home so that I get some things done.
Off to work.
Mega vibes for everyone.

Good morning, all.
All is well in these hours before the storm. But it's official: I've decided hurricanes move too slowly. There's more than enough time to get prepared, but then more than enough time to sit and anticipate, and the latter is less fun. And then there's still the actual storm to endure.
I guess I'd have to say last year's Halloween snowstorm was the worst thing I've been through -- first and foremost, for the power outage in winter temperatures. And I was one of the supremely lucky ones, as mine came back on after only 30 hours. Others nearby, inexplicably, didn't get power back for a week. And it may have been Halloween, but it was winter. My new motto became: It's The Heat, Stupid. If you're at least "comfortable", you can endure one hell of a lot of additional inconvenience, but fighting freezing temperatures is a killer.
Second and also foremost, for the amount of destruction the falling trees caused and for how long it took to get it all cleaned up, and for everyone's personal expense of having to call in tree people take down hanging limbs and such. Not a nice impact at all.
So, that's the big one, at least in my adult life. When we lived in Florida in the 1960s, we were personally spared any particular damage from the hurricanes in those years, and I just don't recall anything else of note.
-
Vibes to you all in the hurricane's path. And also vibes to those of you aren't.
-
I am delighted -- delighted, I tell you -- to report that the Christmas CD has just been ordered. I was really blown away by what I heard in that recording session, and have been looking forward to adding this modern day version of a truly musical and entertaining Christmas album to the collection this year.
-
Off now to try running a couple more important errands.
If/when we lose power (which I think shouldn't be till at least later in the day), you'll know it by an E&Tness of more than a couple of hours duration...at which point, once it's safe to be out and about after the storm has passed, I'll be seeking public places with Wi-Fi to check in.
-
Good morning from windy Northern Virginia. Guess I'll go to the supermarket and see if there's any bottled water left.
-
Good morning, all! I got up and decided to do laundry in the basement laundry room. I usually go down the street, but I can wash the rugs this weekend. Since I'm stuck here, i thought I would remake my bed and get ready for winterizing it.
Manhattan is completely quiet. The only difference between today and a heavy snow day is that you'd hear the scrape of snow shovels against the concrete. Today, no sounds at all.
So, the laundry is in the washers and I need more coffee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safe Vibes to Everyone, Everywhere! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday morning greetings! It's blustery here in SW Ohio - I think we're in one of the weather systems that's supposed to collide with Hurricane Sandy.
-
Thank you to DRs Ben, KevinH, ChasSmith, and Elmore for your on-the-scene reporting. Your posts are a lot more interesting than anything I've seen this morning on NBC, ABC, or CNN.
I have a midday appointment with my gastroenterologist that is almost 2 years overdue. I was due for the dreaded exam in December of 2010, but was kind of busy adjusting to cardio issues. My cardiologist said, "Don't even think of having a colonoscopy while you're on Plavix!," which I stopped taking a couple of months ago. Today is just an office appointment, but I KNOW what he's going to tell me :P
-
That sky is scary, Elmore.
-
I agree that sky is scary...
-
Good day one and all...
-
I hope those on the east coast remain safe and sound...
-
I see we blew on to Page 2!
Ginny, I wonder if the system you are getting is the one we had late last week where we got over an inch of lovely rain. We desperately needed the rain. It has been terribly dry here.
Good morning from windy Northern Virginia. Guess I'll go to the supermarket and see if there's any bottled water left.
Let me save you a trip. There isn't. :)
Filling tub now.
Hi everyone. Quiet here in the Bay Area. Going to go pick up dog #3 from the sitters, then back home for some errands and chores. Tonight, I start year 7 of A Christmas Carol - The Musical. Not a lot of new people this year, so vocal rehearsals should be a breeze. More like a brush up, I guess.
-
Continued vibes for those on the East Coast!!
CD ordered....it looks great!!! We will be playing it this season at World of Wisdom!!
-
Vibes for DR DAKOTA CELT.
Mr David Cryer and his wife Britt were very pleasant to meet and speak with last night. Tonight we start working with them, they just watched the show last night.
They are in from their home in New Jersey, so there is some stress about what they will find when they return home in mid November.
Worst weather was probably the Blizzard of 1978 when the ENTIRE state of Indiana was under a blizzard warning. We had more than five inches of snow on the ground that January 28 when it started to snow about 5 p.m., and by the time the snow stopped 34 hours later.....we had over 20 inches of snow on the ground.
It was fun for about a day and half....then it was miserable!!!
-
TOD - DR JRand, my first thought was also the Blizzard of '78. But my answer would have to be September of 2008 when Hurricane Ike made its way to SW Ohio. The actual weather - specifically, high winds - only lasted a few hours, but the aftermath was awful. Our power was out for 5 days, because our utility companies had sent crews to the Gulf states that they then had to get back here. Fortunately, we didn't need heat or air conditioning, but we lost a lot of food from our refrigerator and freezer. The challenge for me was getting ready for work without my hair dryer, curling iron, and lighted make-up mirror. What kept me from going absolutely crazy was that we still had running water, including hot.
-
Off to see Dr. Gerber - bye for now!
I remember driving home in that blizzard around midnight from Cincinnati on Rte 75 when my shift at Peaches Records ended. At one point I hit some ice and my car - it was a Gremlin - did a complete spin before I got it under control. There was so little trafficthat I caused no harm, but it scared the crap out of me, as well as the drivers behind me. I washappy to be home in one piece.
I am now listening to Britten's wonderful children's opera, NOYE'S FLUDDE, with its fantastic development of the Navy Hymn during the storm sequence. Always makes me cry.
Last load of laundry is in, dishes are done, and paper plates and cups will be the order of the day if the power goes.
The President made a short speech about the storm..... It is very serious....and I continue to send vibes to our East Coasters.
I had to chase my trash can lid down the street a few minutes ago....we have a Wind Advisory for Indiana right now as well.
Thanks for the good wishes from everyone!
I ended up buying two 24 packs of small bottles of water at the supermarket, but when I stopped at Rite Aid I checked and they had gallon bottles of distilled water (not spring water) --I guess that's okay.
I got home and realized I forgot to check to see if they had ice! So I guess I'll venture back out before it get s really bad.
From TheaterMania:
Victor Herbert: Eileen (New World Records) A thorough job of detective work has resulted in this impressive first full-scale recording of Victor Herbert's 1916 operetta, set against the backdrop of Irish rebellions at the end of the eighteenth century. Herbert's felicity for lush melodies is in boundless evidence here. But what might be most extraordinary about his work is how it not only presupposes work by Jerome Kern and George Gershwin, but also draws on Irish airs and even John Philip Sousa. Backed by the Orchestra of Ireland, the principals all deliver robust performances, particularly tenor Eamonn Mulhall as the show's hero.
Hmmm... the worst weather I have been in that is a curious question.
Since I live in an area of the country where do not have a lot of earthquakes and hurricanes, we get floods, snowstorms, windstorms and thunderstorms.
There are so many to choose from... The winter of 1996-97 was not a fun winter... AT ALL!
A quick geography lesson. The Red River of the North flows north and is at the bottom of an ancient glacial lake called Lake Agassiz. There fore a lot of things flow into the valley, including overland flooding.
I would have to say one of the worst was in March 1997. During the winter we had over 140 inches of snow and that is way above our normal amount of snow. It was very dangerous for driving in towns as one could not see another vehicle approaching from an intersection. There were places where the snowbanks were so high you could on them from a second story window. We had a lot of blizzards that winter and including three in one week. Due to the amount of snow we received that winter, they were already telling people to prepare for a severe spring flood. The entire Red River Basin had between 90 to 140 inches of snow and all the water had to go somewhere. One report of snow cores from different areas had the water level in the snow at over 8 inches and as high as 15 inches of melted moisture.
In March 1997, we had an ice storm just as the rivers were starting to rise. The rain melted a lot of the snow and the rivers were full. In the Wahpeton area they were sandbagging in a blizzard. The ice storm brought 50 tp 70 mile an hour winds in addition to precipitation creating interesting patterns on houses. The power and phone lines snapped from the weight of the ice on the lines. We did not have power for nearly a week in Thompson. Temperatures were in the 20s and I wore many layers of clothes. The river did go down a little and left ice shelves on the trees in the Wahpeton area. It was rather cool looking. Less than a week after the storm it started to warm up rapidly and the rivers were on the rise and fast. Fargo was within two inches of being lost due to the height of the river. Water started to flow in from the tributaries and overland flooding as the Red River is the lowest spot in the area.
I was in Grand Forks the day the city went under. The sirens sounded about 6 am as water started to top the dikes in Lincoln Park. It was surreal.
The flood of 2009 in Fargo was another surreal esperience. We had heavy snow in the winter but not to the level of 1997 and heavy rain that spring. The river rose rapidly and again Fargo barely survived as we had a blizzard and it created ice chunks on the river. Ice chunks are not good for earthen dikes.
-
The surreal thing about overland flooding is that it makes the country side look like something out of the Louisiana Bayou country or a sea...
-
I bought a few cases of those 16- or 20-oz bottles of drinking water, too. Good stuff to have around anyway, and I still have a few gallons of spring water that need to be used up. The filled tubs will take care of all other needs. Necessities. "Rhode Island's out visiting the necessary."
Helper has come and gone.
You are *this* close to hearing stories. Trust me on that.
Success! I found 3 bags of ice. They fit in my freezer for now --in the (apparently inevitable) power outage I can put two of them in my coolers.
The weather's been pretty much the same in my neck of the woods in the South of Jersey for the past 12 hours--blustery wind and a constant pouring rain. While I know it's going to get much worse (core of the storm will pass just south of here), I'm not overly worried. My house is brick and the roof structure was reinforced a few years ago when I put on a new roof. If anything, I'll keep an eye on the aluminum awning and bay window in the front of the house (fortunately, the wind seems to be blowing at the back.)
-
Yesterday morning I ran out to a supermarket to do my panic buying. In spite of my dislike of bottled water (on environmental grounds), I did wind up buying two 24-packs. I also bought some more Halloween candy (it was on sale…)
-
Back from a reunion pub lunch. Round the corner from the pub, a smart new fish and chip takeaway plus fish restaurant has opened which I must try out some time.
-
What drove me crazy while driving back and forth to the store was seeing how many households were not hurricane-proofed. People had trash cans and recycling containers out on the curbs, large halloween decorations on their lawns, chairs and rockers and planters on porches. I saw one woman blowing a huge pile of leaves into the street gutter, where they will most likely help clog up the storm drains. A house on the next block from me had a huge pile of junk piled for trash pick-up (the township sent out phone messages informing residents that trash pick-up has been cancelled this week.) And believe it or not, I saw one family setting up a yard sale! What is wrong with these people!
-
TOD: It would have to be the "Blizzard of '77," Buffalo, NY. There was already a lot of snow on the ground when the blizzard hit. People were stranded in offices since it hit so suddenly. The average snow for a Buffalo winter is about 100 inches--that year the count was 199.
That's easy. No question about it, The worst weather I've ever experienced is what became known as "The Great Storm of 1987". This affected mainly the south of England and was the worst storm to affect Britain for several hundred years. I awoke about 1.00 in the morning to the sound of the wind and of roof tiles falling to the ground and the sound of all kinds of things being blown about. In the morning, many of my tiles had gone as had most of my fences, with rubbish and branches strewn everywhere. By 10.00 in the morning the winds had lessened to the extent that I could still cycle to work - although not many people turned up. On the roads I passed and manouvered around numerous fallen trees and other debris. I had no electricity for over two days so I couldn't even see the news coverage of the devastation.
Hurrincane Gloria in 1986 really devastated the area - that probably was the worst -- large parts of long Island (including my neck of the woods) were out of power for 10 -14 days
I was living in a windowless basement apartment at the time so I moved into my boyfriend's house for the duration - he had a four bedroom house and three room mates.
His parents, brother, sister and her husband all moved in as well so it was a little crowded
TOD:
In September 1999, I was staying at the Omega Institute when, towards the end of the week, the remains of Hurricane Floyd came through. On Wednesday night, the storm was just approaching but there was a heavy rain. The workshop I was attending, a theatre/dance/poetry hybrid, held an open-to-all night time session that culminated in a clothing-optional outdoors dance in the rain. A good time was had by all.
But the weather got progressively worse the following day. The camp lost electricity and the dining hall was shut down. There was an impromptu gathering at the cafe, where we were treated to free pizza and melting ice cream and a sing-a-long concert by that week's visiting songstress (whose name escapes me.) A good time was being had by all until they announced that, because of safety regulations, we needed to leave the cafe and return to our cabins.
I have no idea what they were thinking as far as "safety" was concerned--the wind and rain were so bad that I was lucky I found my cabin. And once inside, I didn't feel much safer--the walls and roof creeked with every blast of wind. I seriously considered sleeping in the bathtub in the bathroom, but I was also afraid of lightning hitting the plumbing (there was lots of lightning and thunder, too!) somehow, I eventually fell asleep.
The following morning, there was still no electricity and no running water in my cabin. The dining hall had only cold cereal and fruit salad (but they somehow had hot coffee). Trees and limbs were down all over the campus. The final workshop session was cut short. A few of us found a place to take an ice cold shower at the spa. When we got to the Rhinecliff train station, we found that there was no Amtrak service. But at the Greyhound bus terminal in Kingston, I got to meet Ralph Waite ( from THE WALTONS).
The end.
Apparently Anderson Cooper's talk show, the one that helped DR Danise, has been canceled.
-
The blizzard of January 1996 was pretty bad too --- Vixdad was working in Greenlelt Maryland at the time and his office ran a late holiday party in Washington DC
I left 2 year old Vixter with my parents and drove down on Friday aftenoon- the party was Saturday evening --
His office put us up in a beautiful hotel about 2 blocks from the Capitol -- our room had a capital view of the Capitol -
It started snowing during the party and there were already several inches on the ground when we got back to our room
We couldn't see the Capitol anymore due to the whiteout conditions--- we were not able to see the Capitol again until Monday -- it took until Wednesday for us to be able to get out and get back to Greenbelt to the hotel where Vidxdad was living during the week
They reopened the Thruway on Thursday and i took off to get back home before I got stuck again
And despite all the dire warnings on the news and all the announced business and school closings, the HR manager at my place of work sent out an email last night stating that the office would be open this morning be cause the building landlord saw no reason to close it.
I sent my manager an e-mail first thing this morning informing him that I was "working at home". Turned out that he had the same idea, as did everyone on my team.
At 11:30, the HR manager sent out a message that everyone who came in had to leave at noon.
And so it goes...
I just found the story - apparently they were sailing from CT to FL - why they didn't dock somewhere with this storm coming is beyond comprehension - 14 were rescued but two of the crew are missing
-
Apparently Anderson Cooper's talk show, the one that helped DR Danise, has been canceled.
Probably due to the lack of speed they showed in repairing Danise's home
The show prolly blew out its budget on shipping that humongous washer/dryer set.
everything just beeped again if we lose power i wll shut down to save the laptop battery for emergencies
Last night's news reports were filled with interviews with residents of the barrier islands at the Jersey shore (where Sandy is primed to hit) who decided that they were not going to follow evacuation orders and ride out the storm. Most of them mentioned how Hurricane Irene turned into a bust (for this area,anyway.)
Today, there are reports of these people making desperate calls to be rescued, putting first responders at risk. Idiots!
-
In other news, I just spent more than 30 minutes on the phone with the travel agent who's setting up the England trip for Richard's seminary. The basics of our trip are now complete. We will stay with the group in the Russell Square area of London before the week in Norwich and near Westminster Abbey for 4 days on our own afterwards.
Thanks for the good wishes from everyone!
I ended up buying two 24 packs of small bottles of water at the supermarket, but when I stopped at Rite Aid I checked and they had gallon bottles of distilled water (not spring water) --I guess that's okay.
I got home and realized I forgot to check to see if they had ice! So I guess I'll venture back out before it get s really bad.
Distilled water is good.
-
I want to open the windows. It's too warm in here.
-
Success! I found 3 bags of ice. They fit in my freezer for now --in the (apparently inevitable) power outage I can put two of them in my coolers.
That great!
-
The weather's been pretty much the same in my neck of the woods in the South of Jersey for the past 12 hours--blustery wind and a constant pouring rain. While I know it's going to get much worse (core of the storm will pass just south of here), I'm not overly worried. My house is brick and the roof structure was reinforced a few years ago when I put on a new roof. If anything, I'll keep an eye on the aluminum awning and bay window in the front of the house (fortunately, the wind seems to be blowing at the back.)
Thanks for the update. Try and keep us posted.
-
What drove me crazy while driving back and forth to the store was seeing how many households were not hurricane-proofed. People had trash cans and recycling containers out on the curbs, large halloween decorations on their lawns, chairs and rockers and planters on porches. I saw one woman blowing a huge pile of leaves into the street gutter, where they will most likely help clog up the storm drains. A house on the next block from me had a huge pile of junk piled for trash pick-up (the township sent out phone messages informing residents that trash pick-up has been cancelled this week.) And believe it or not, I saw one family setting up a yard sale! What is wrong with these people!
Have you been receiving the same warnings other areas have?
Apparently, "I'm Still Here".
Good.
Not too much rain yet but lots of wind -- we lost the front gate to our 6 foot cedar stockade fence --- looks liek the rest of the fence may be going as well
And despite all the dire warnings on the news and all the announced business and school closings, the HR manager at my place of work sent out an email last night stating that the office would be open this morning be cause the building landlord saw no reason to close it.
I sent my manager an e-mail first thing this morning informing him that I was "working at home". Turned out that he had the same idea, as did everyone on my team.
At 11:30, the HR manager sent out a message that everyone who came in had to leave at noon.
And so it goes...
I'm glad you stayed home.
Yes. I can't imagine anything more she can do to be prepared. She won't leave though. Had she not been home during Irene the damage to her house would not have been repairable.
She has a dog boarding license. She sent home the dogs boarding with her & canceled the others. Everyone understood & really wanted their dogs with them. This morning she had several calls from panicked people, new to her, that wanted her to take their pets. It seems it took until this morning to realize the danger they were in & didn't have a plan to take their dogs-idiots. Of course she is concerned they will abandon their pets but there is nothing she can do.
Yesterday, inspired by BK, I went to Subway to get subs for Vixdad and myself -- he had a club but I had a turkey with swiss, bacon and red onion, which they grilled and then added lettuce and lots of avocado
I ordered footlongs - we ate half yesterday and the other halves today for lunch
Our main local tv stations are the same as Philly, so we have had the same advanced warnings for days. Plus, the township has been sending out recorded phone messages. There's no excuse for these people.
Yeah. They don't do that in Florida, as I recall. I couldn't imagine not being able to evacuate without J.B. Yes, things may be different for a bird, but pets are family to many of the people who own then.
TOD:
and I am grateful that I have never had any terrible stories of wild weather to tell about. Oregon tends to be mild, and even the couple of times we had huge amounts of snow or back in 1995 or 96 when we had the really big windstorm, I was not affected. Nothing hit my car or hurt my apartment building.
We did have the major flooding here a number of years ago but nothing near our home.
I remember some whopper storms in NJ, MA, PA & MI. Fortunately we never had major damage to our homes outside of basement flooding. We survived all scary driving incidents & made it home safely.
The HMS Bounty that sank today was created for the 1962 MGM film "Mutiny on the Bounty". For many years, it was docked at St. Petersburg FL. I visited it during Spring Break 1970.
According to reports, it was off the coast of NC on its trek down to St. Pete. I believe the ship was much used in training exercises over the years.
What a pity. And the loss of life is very tragic.
Back from the editing room and locking episode one - I'd asked for one addition, but when I saw it I found it unnecessary so out it went. Then we made the Quick Time files, burned it to DVD and it's ready for the showing.
-
Still have power!
-
Then the editor, his assistant, and I went to the Coral Cafe - since I knew it would be my only meal o' the day, I had their super breakfast - eggs, two sausage links, two bacons, one small piece of ham - and I had one and a half pancakes and one piece of toast. Very full right now.
-
No packages today. Was going to jog but got a call from a florist asking if I'd be here from four to six for a delivery - I have no clew who would be sending me flowers.
1.5 million in the dark.
Sigh!
I was just chatting on FB with my "Irene" friend. Someone actually asked if her daughter was home. Her response cracked me up, "Of course she is home, this is a major storm". It seems the woman who asked didn't keep her children home today. ::)
We still have power in Chelsea. It's not hit us hard yet. They keep talking about 8pm but as far as I know most of Manhattan still has power. It's the outer boroughs and Long Island and New Jersey that are being hit hardest.
Yes, it's very odd that a facade of a building would fall off (makes you wonder what that facade was/is made of, while no one else is reporting any problems at all in Manhattan. Weird.
I don't know that someone recently said that, but John McCain did an entire skit on SNL a few years ago with that theme. I'm assuming that some people still have that attitude.
DR Ben is gone. Can anyone answer my question regarding W. 12th Street?
I looked it up and that is West Village. Now to find out if that area has power, if possible which I doubt.
It's called the television. I've had it on all day.
DR Elmore, those of us not in New York are relying on national news sources that aren't very specific about locations in Manhattan. There was a report on NBC Nightly News about the dangling crane being high atop "one of New York's busiest streets" and the building where the facade collapsed being "about 30 blocks south of here."
-
None of Manhattan is powerless, as far as I know, except possibly the areas closest to the battery or the Hudson River. No on's reported power being out. The only injury reported was a stupid jogger went out for a run and a tree branch fell on her.
-
I haven't seen any indication that the power is out. Interesting. I saw this photo of Lower Manhatten
Yeah, I knew it was 57th, either from here or from Twitter, by the time I heard Brian Williams' report. CNN has much better coverage.
According to the tv news, which is all that's playng on the ABC station, the crane has been providing problems for some time and this collapse is the latest. I hope they can bring it down before something awful happens.
There was a pounding on our door acouple of hours ago and it was oneof our neighbors shouting about embers onthe roof
we ran out to see that the tree across the street had tangled in the power lines and started to catch fire - the firey embers were blowing towards our house and landing on our roof
fortunately the house DID NOT catch fire
the wire fell in the street and began sparking and flaming and making loud banging noises - we called the fire dept and the power went out and a cop showed up
he closed off the street with some yellow hazard tape and sat there until the power company must have shut down the transformer (remotely) because the sparking flaming and banging stopped
but no power truck showed up nor any fire truck
-
No flooding on West 82nd Street. Of course, it may be different at West 82nd street and West End Avenue, but I doubt it. The park is on lower ground.
-
Compared to a fire losing your power doesn't sound so bad. What a scare that must have been.
-
Scary story, DR Vixmom! Hope they get your power back on soon...
-
My "Irene" friend just posted the following:
Just took dogs to pee, I listened as wind sounds like thunder & in the sky we are seeing transformers exploding & lighting up the sky. & it went from being cold to warm & very tropical
-
I just got flowers! I can't recall the last time such a thing happened, but it's been a few years, I think. From the East Coast Singer.
Good to hear!
DRJose just tweeted that the Cheldea Piers is completely under water. I suspect everything along the Hudson is flooded.
I had just started making dinner
I am so glad I invested in some good heavy pots a couple of years ago --- I had just boiled the water with hthe widl rice in it and heated the roasted chicken and peas
the pots were all covered and retained enough heat to finish the cooking so we had a nice dinner
I've had that happen. It is frustrating when it doesn't finish cooking.
Vixdad bought a generator during Irene so he just set that up to keep the refrigerator, one lamp the wireless router and the TV set going
I just heard Coney Island is completely submerged & the NYFD is unable to assist in any rescue.
Vixdad bought a generator during Irene so he just set that up to keep the refrigerator, one lamp the wireless router and the TV set going
I wish we had a generator.
DR elmore do you know of a link that I can follow to see what is happening in the various neighborhoods? What is your's called again?
It's called the television. I've had it on all day.
oooh you are riding the right way for a slap you are....
:D
Scary story, DR Vixmom! Hope they get your power back on soon...
Very scary story.
-
Michael Cassara just posted on Facebook that a lot a lot of Manhattan below 34th Street has no power.
I don't have high expectations - I suspect we are low priority - short block with only 10 houses
COSTCO!! BJ's!! Home Depot! Lowes!
It is not very big but keeping the fridge going and one lamp is really enough to make things reasonably comfortable
Great priorities! Be careful with the generator - I heard today about dangers of carbon monoxide...
Alyce Mott just posted this on Facebook:
Connecticut has thousands of people stranded in houses totally surrounded by water who were dumb enough to think they could ride this out. They are telling folks to stay put and go to the highest point in their dwelling and hang tough - Connecticut Governor called this a Katrina situation.
250,000 people in Manhattan now in the dark - I'm not one although the lights have flickered a bit.
Now there's a major fire (five buildings) in Rockaway Park - three of the buildings have collapsed - firefighters went to buildings by boat. They saved 25 people in a boat in chest high water - WOW. It just keeps getting crazier and crazier.
-
Last night, one of the newcasts was reporting live from Rehoboth Beach and they were saying how serious the situation was becoming.
~~~~~~HHW vibes to DR derBrucer and DR S. Woody White!~~~~~~
DITTO!! I was thinking of them as I saw that report

My friend Matt reported that his apartment on the 3rd floor is okay, but the first floor is flooded and his car is underwater.
I'm sure the boat dock at 79th and the Hudson is a disaster area.

One hears such conflicting reports. I have to stop even looking at Facebook, for as irritating as the political posts have been, these jokers who keep posting the same fake photos are really beginning to piss me off. Why do reasonably intelligent people do this?
And why does anyone forward those kinds of photos or posts for that matter without checking them out first. When I said the power was out in New York City that was based on coverage on my local news program showing a whole bank of skyscrapers that were dark. And then the newscaster said that NYC had apparently gone dark.

Worst weather I was ever in would be a couple different blizzards, one in about 1978 one earlier, can't remember the year. School was out for over a week. I was in a tornado once, but the damage wasn't close to us, and I was only 8 years old, so while I remember it, I would only rank it as number 3
-
Even though Sandy is supposed to be fairly bad in various parts of Canada, it is not supposed to be bad here. Only thing is the winds are really bad. But nothing like others are experiencing.

Gov. Christie just raked the Atlantic City mayor over the coals. If it wasn't so serious, it would be funny.
I had to laugh at a later Christie announcement--if the weather is still bad on Wednesday, he's going to sign an Executive Order and reschedule Halloween. If you ask me, it sounds like a plot to steal all the Tricks or Treats for himself.
-
I had my fill of the hurricane newscasts this evening and decided to switch to a movie to take my mind off the storm. So I tuned into TCM and watched INHERIT THE WIND.

T.O.D.
Columbus Day 1962. It was a Friday night, and as usual I was going to the Proctor Theater, along with a lot of my friends. While I was eating dinner, I heard the newscaster on TV talking about this big windstorm in Portland, Oregon. That didm't mean anything to me. About an hour into the first movie, the power went out and the emergency lights came on in the back. We went up to the lobby to see what was going on. The theater owner, Mr. Spencer was telling this large group of us in the lobby that no one was leaving the theater until we had called our parents to come and get us. He said there was a large storm outside, and it wasn't safe for any of us to walk home. Just then, the theater door opened and there was my mother! She had been at a meeting at church when the power went out. She saw how bad the storm was becoming so she stopped to see if she could find me and take me home. That was the first and only time I ever remember being in winds over 100 miles an hour. The damage the next day was mindbending.

The barometric pressure in the storm was the lowest ever recorded on the East Coast.
-
I keep seeing all these photos and hearing all these reports, and yet I know not one person in NY who is seeing these problems. It's weird. I've heard of blinking lights and obviously Con Ed has shut down the power in part of the city, but certainly in the mid-town to early uptown areas things seem quiet.
-
OMG, this looks fake but isn't.
That is so sad.
But where and what are we looking at?
Sorry, it said ground zero.

I think newscasters are as bad as people posting on Facebook - I truly think they either make it up, misinterpret, or are told things and then don't check before saying them.
-
I did get to meet former President Bill Clinton tonight...

Elmore posted earlier that power had been shut down south of 39th St., due to flooding in lower Manhattan. This isn't the same view I saw on the news, but this is similar. It is taken from Brooklyn looking at lower Manhattan.
