Title: PRAY FOR ROSEMARY'S BABY
Post by: bk on November 03, 2012, 12:09:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes beat a hasty retreat and prayed for Rosemary's Baby, and now it is time for you to post until the hasty cows come home from their hasty retreat where they ate hasty pudding and spoke of their hasty hearts.

We have a loaf of bread and some English muffins in the refrigerator.

We do have oatmeal which can be made without cold ingredients.

We will need to do some shopping soon but I know that the stores in the neighborhood won't have much (at least in terms of milk, yogurt, eggs, cheese and other cold things) until their cold units and freezers are back up and running and full of goodies.

John Cassavetes I am not so crazy about......except in RB.

Ruth Gordon - of course as Minnie and as Maude in HAROLD AND MAUDE.  She was a rather lackluster host on Saturday Night Live once....decades ago....and I thought she would be much better....could have been the material of course.

Always like Mia Farrow....ever since PEYTON PLACE....and I will always remember Cleveland Amory's TV Guide review of her in that series:  "....I don't mind that she never gives us a new inflection....but couldn't she at least get another speed?"

Good morning, all! I will shortly head for Toyland and catch the lay oftheland around 27th Street.

Last night I slept poorly and had many weird dreams, one about a meeting at Toyland that began in the ffice and ended in the front yard of the house where I grew up. In my last dream I was putting away magazines for Barnes & Noble.

It's good to see DRs Ben and vixmom back with us.

More Coffee!

DR vixmom, the gas stove and fireplace (especially the fireplace) are certainly essential and go a long way toward keeping one not only alive but sane.

Up to a point.

With temperatures taking this dip from where we started at the storm, the lack of real heat for any appreciable length of time is something I truly do not know how people deal with.  On Thursday night I had just arranged to jump ship and stay with a friend in a neighboring town, and was contemplating that being my last night trying to get some sleep huddled in a comforter in front of the fireplace, when the power here was mercifully restored.

Whatever else I do today, I'm picking up ROSEMARY'S BABY and will be watching it tonight.

TOD:  I saw a few of the films with Woody (I always like CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS and HUSBANDS AND WIVES), but honestly don't have a lot of Mia Farrow films in mind besides ROSEMARY'S BABY and THE GREAT GATSBY.

However, I must note that upon glancing through her filmography, that she was in:

HURRICANE.

Truth be told none of these actors kick me in the butt.  Other than Rosemary's Baby and Harold & Maude Ica't think of anything else, I've ever seen Ruth Gordon in (and I'm not that sure I've ever seen H&M, maybe part of it on TV).  Mia Farrow has never compelled me and has absolutely no sex.  Cassavettes I liked in the Dirty Dozen and The Killers, but beyond that, though I know I've seen him in other stuff, nothing sticks out.

I'm pretty much in agreement.  I've never really been a fan of any of these performers.

I do enjoy THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, but that's because I like Woody Allen's films.

Two tiramisus made. One with peach, almond and amaretto, which is really pretty. And one with blueberries and coconut, which is rather messy. Should taste good, but isn't the most appetizing-looking dish ever.

Because there is no subway below 34th Street, the uptown buses are packed with people.  I ended up, after too few packed buses passed by, getting a taxi to 42nd Street and catching the 104 bus from there.

Went to the Dogwood Pet Hotel this morning.  It's clearly more of a dog hotel than a cat hotel. The  Cat room has the below modues in it. (I got these photos from the net. This isn't the actual place) I don't like the idea of putting the cats in these cages, but there is one cool thing.  I can get three across the top and they can adjust them so all three cats could go back and forth between all three modules.   Could be worse.   I have a feeling this will be harder on me than the cats.

I can take cat beds from home and they encourge it.  I take their regular food to help woth digestive issues and they can give Callie her meds.  The cat room is right next to the office so they would be within earshot, but the cat room is far away from the dogs, so they can't hear them.   Also the owner lives on site so bad weather wouldn't prevent someone getting to them.

I'm thinking of trying it over the holidays for a couple nights and see how it works out

Yeah, TCB I know, on the other hand, the cats were pretty freaked out with the last cat sitter, Callie does hide at medicine time and then hisses at other people and if there's a snow storm, they may be trapped in the house with no one able to get here.  Against that backdrop, they are safer in the pet hotel where they can be together.

I think the big thing is when Katie told me "I had no idea it would be this hard to take care of the cats" I had to think about how hard it would be for someone who doesn't live here and doesn't know Callie's hiding places.  My cats really aren't that easy to take care of if you aren't as familiar with them as Sharon was.  I have to consider that.

Oh, I know what you mean, Cilla.  In Nicky's case, he is, at the moment, and only child, so taking him to a cat hotel would be tougher.  Having three babies, all at the same place, it sounds llike a better idea for their sake as well as yours.

Perhaps I should wait until tomorrow when it is free-for-all day, but I am curious as to what style of voting do people have in their areas.  Washington, I believe, has 100% mail in ballots, there are the old-fashioned polling places open for one day only, and more and more I hear about early voting available at polling places.  I was just curious.

DR TCB, we have early voting in Ohio, but we have to go to a Board of Elections office.  I did that 4 years ago because of my work schedule, but this year I will go to the new school that was built to replace the elementary school that Rob attended.  Our polling place has moved around a lot lately and I'm glad for us to be back where we belong.

In Iowa, early voting started September 28.  If you had a petition with I don't know how many names you could be a designated polling place for early voting.  It's really just absentee voting.  I went to the courthouse. You first fill out the request for an absentee ballot, then you take the ballot to a voting station and fill it out, then you put it in the privacy envelope and give it back.   You can also request an absentee ballott and fill it out at home then turn it in or mail it in.

So, that has to be on Tuesday only?

Yes, the community polling places are only open on Tuesday.  Early voting requires a trip to the Board of Elections, which is kind of far from our home.  They had pretty convenient hours through yesterday, but they're cutting back as Tuesday approaches.  Today they were open 8-2, tomorrow 1-5, and Monday 8-2.

Hi everyone.  Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday. Tonight is my first night at Max' Restaurant in Palo Alto.  I'll be paying and singing some tunes from 6-10.  The playing part is easy, the singing of said tunes I've had to spend time on. So, I have some Carpenters, Neil Sedaka, and some things like that, mostly 70's and I think I'm in good shape for the evening.  I'll check in after and give a report!

I haven't done much today.  It's been nice.   I do need to make a trip to the store and get some potting soil.  Some friends gave me a big bunch of plants that...well I don't know what they are called, but I hear they do well inside.  It's a big root-bound ball, so I'm going to divide it up into several pots and take them to the office.  I may try to keep one here, but the cats tend to try to eat all plants, so I'll have to look up what it is and if it will hurt them before I do that

TOD, the sequel:

Ruth Gordon -- ROSEMARY'S BABY, WHERE'S POPPA?, and WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO AUNT ALICE? -- which I don't recall seeing, but I intend to like her in it when I finally do.  Never warmed up to HAROLD AND MAUDE (only saw bits and pieces on TV back in the day) but might actually give it a try sometime.

John Cassavetes -- ROSEMARY'S BABY, TWO MINUTE WARNING (I think), HUSBANDS.  Probably more I'm forgetting.

And for a bonus response:  Sidney Blackmer -- ROSEMARY'S BABY and the PREMATURE BURIAL episode of THRILLER.  I feel I've seen him a few other times, am totally blank on what those things are, but wanted to give him a shout-out.

A good wood burning stove in the fireplace that pushes heat into the room is much better than a regular fireplace.

Night time is the worst time without heat, at least for me.

Here's the recipe, Vixmom. I was thinking, Jane, if you did a vegetarian version of this, mushrooms might be really good in the mix.

Mushrooms work well as a beef substitute.  This recipe give me a feel for it, thanks.

Talk of cabbage roll casserole reminds me Craig didn't have time to make his delicious vegetarian version of Romanian Cabbage rolls before he move.

I've decided I'm going to try and make my hair appointments on Saturday.  My shoulder almost always feels better after I swim, until I wash, dry & flat iron it.  Then I have trouble moving it again.  This evening my shoulder is feeling pretty good from the swim & my hair looks much better than when I do it.

I wouldn't think it would be very good to flat iron your shoulder.

Are any of our LA folks familiar with the name Peter Ellenshaw?  He was an artist in the film industry and did a lot of work for Disney.  We were in a gallery last night where I was admiring my friend Pam's paintings and chatting with her and Richard was transfixed with a signed & numbered print of Ellenshaw's "Evensong."  I could just tell that he really wanted it, so I asked if he wanted it for his Christmas present.  Without hesitation he said YES, so I wrote a check to the gallery owner and it's now hanging in our living room:

It is beautiful.

Thanks, DR Jane!  When we were leaving the art center, an acquaintance asked to see what we'd bought.  She compared it to the work of Thomas Kincade, but I don't think it's as goopy as his.

Goopy?

My made-up word for overly sweet and sentimental...

Wonderful rehearsal, wonderful signing (and full up) and wonderful meal at Genghis Cohen.  Must now sit on my couch like so much fish.

Well, I must begin resetting our clocks and get ready for tomorrow.  I'm not going to Lima because Rob and Mary Linda are being received into membership at their church and I want to be there.  Fr. Richard will have to deliver the cookies I'm providing for the annual meeting in Lima.

I like my new Kindle Fire HD tablet, on which I'm typing this  :)

It's called fire but I doubt it would keep you warm if the heat was out ;)

Went to the Dogwood Pet Hotel this morning.  It's clearly more of a dog hotel than a cat hotel. The  Cat room has the below modues in it. (I got these photos from the net. This isn't the actual place) I don't like the idea of putting the cats in these cages, but there is one cool thing.  I can get three across the top and they can adjust them so all three cats could go back and forth between all three modules.   Could be worse.   I have a feeling this will be harder on me than the cats.

This is NOT what I was expecting you to find. :(

ME either.  I guess that's why there's no photo on the web page.   I said "I thought you'd have a cat room" and they just said "no we don't"

I should have read your entire post before responding.  That isn't too bad if they can open all three across.

And we can put their beds and the pads they like to sit on in the cages, so it won't be as cold

Had an update on my catsitter.  She's in good spirits, getting started in rehab and learning to put on her socks.  Great to hear that

wonder where everyone else is

Today, I watched a couple hours of TV and then went to my parents' house for dinner...meatloaf with white sauce.  After that, we played a couple of games of Qwirkle.  And now I'm home and catching up on all the posts. :)

I considered putting a voice mail saying that I had already mailed my ballot, so please leave me alone.

I actually did mail it last week.

So did I, but I've never been called. I feel so left out!

BREAK A...FINGER!! ;D

Two tiramisus made. One with peach, almond and amaretto, which is really pretty. And one with blueberries and coconut, which is rather messy. Should taste good, but isn't the most appetizing-looking dish ever.

Now, time to get ready for Austin.

John is tiramisu normally made with some type of alcohol in it?
Mine is.

Fun day out in the sun. The paella party was on a 17-acre property east of Austin. Turns out the property has a rum distillery out back near the area where they were smoking and roasting pigs. I don't know about you, but playing with matches around flammables is not my idea of intelligence in action.

Anyway, I was judging nine non-traditional paellas, and that most of them were. There was one in which the rice was cooked in tamarind and Jamaica, or hibiscus flowers, with slabs of warm pineapple, clams and artichoke hearts. Very nice. It won third place.

There was a dessert paella (which I would tend to call rice pudding) with dried fruits, baked pears and rum in it. (It won nothing because they screwed up the rice).

The winner was a paella that put a taste of the South in your mouth. It was soul food paella with smoked ham hocks, ox tails, pig's feet, cippoline onions, sweet peppers and more over the rice, which had been made with a combination of chicken stock and pork stock. The rice was perfectly cooked, which the point and focus of paella, and the source of the most points in the grading. But it wasn't just the rice, but the way it all worked together that made it so beautiful.

All of the paellas were beautiful, so maybe I'll post a few pictures in a few days.

Watched ROSEMARY'S BABY.  Satisfying beyond belief, and because I haven't seen it for a few years, this Blu-ray made it seem all the more as though for the first time.  And I remember that first time.  I have no idea what I'd heard that inspired me to get the book, but I did read it before the film was released.  I remember sitting in the car in the parking lot at "Sears Town" in Fort Lauderdale, either with my dad who was waiting to have the car serviced there, or by myself, likewise, with the car.  I devoured that red paperback, and when I saw the movie I was blown away by it.  Went to it a few times here and there, but my last memory of seeing it in a theater was on one of those two tiny screens behind the Egyptian.  Like I said earlier, I never got around to getting it on any home video release, so this Criterion masterpiece is more rewarding than ever.

I'll tackle the interview feature (wow, Robert Evans is still alive and kicking?*) and the documentary on Komeda tomorrow or ASAP.

*Not a complaint.  I love for people to still be alive and kicking.

I believe the time change happened here half an hour ago.

Ate my first ever Marie Callender's home product tonight -- a can of Chicken Pot Pie Style Soup.  I got on a soup kick recently, and while out shopping for storm supplies last weekend I saw this eight-pack of Ms. Callender's soups in Costco and said what the heck, I'll try it, can't be any worse than any other.  Well, it turns out to be very good for canned soup.  Great flavors, and very little (or possibly none) of that burning sodium aftertaste I seem to have become sensitive to in so many prepared foods.  The other kind in this pack is the Chicken and Dumplings which I'll sample tomorrow.

(This pack cost only half that in Costco -- 11 or 12 bucks):

http://www.amazon.com/Marie-Callenders-Soup-Variety-Pack/dp/B000Q3BK28

I'd been thinking about Marie Callender's since being in L.A., anyhoo, instigated by seeing the disgusting transformation (into a bank) of what I believe BK said was one of their flagship restaurants.  I hadn't known that location, but I grew to love going to them in and around L.A., and to the newer fancier site on Wilshire in later years.  As I recall, that might have been (or be? -- I guess many of the others are still around?) a little "too" fancy, but it worked for a bunch of us who frequented it on many an evening after work for drinks and hearty yummy food.  RIP, Callender's in Burbank.

And with that, I bid you all a good night.  It's almost three in the morning, "old" time.  (I obsess my way through almost hourly comparisons of "old" and "new" time for the first day or two of every time change.  Long time habit.)
