Title: SIX MUSICAL NUMBERS, PART TWO
Post by: bk on November 16, 2012, 12:08:52 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of six musical numbers, part two, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're taking the day off and going to the MOOseum to see the Stanley MOObrick exhibit.

DR TCB

You wondered why Shawn Phillips recorded the song for Lost Horizon I think he was recording for A & M label at the time which I think owned the Bell Label that the soundtrack was released on.

If this is not the case I don't know why, but it was a nice choice.

I am wrong about  A & M.

Bell records

Side note: In the 60's The Bell label merged with two other labels and was bought by Columbia Pictures

in the 70's  "Columbia Pictures music consultant Clive Davis, took over as President and would merge the various Columbia Pictures legacy labels (Colpix Records, Colgems Records, and Bell) into a new entity renamed Arista Records..."

One of the groups that recorded for Bell was THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY which BK has some dealings with.

Good morning, all! I slept well until around 4:15am, when the neighbor above me arrived home quite noisily. After many bumps. thumps, and assorted footstepsd, he quieted down and I went back to sleep. As a result, I slept later than intended, and the laundry is now in the washers.

At noon, I am seeing LINCOLN at 68th and Broadway. I'm looking forward to it. My mother's family is ain the family tree of the sister of Nancy Hanks, Lincoln's mother. Ithink that on Thanksgiving, I may see ARGO, which is the other film I've been wanting to see.

Speaking of movies there are some book movies that are coming out next year. The Host (also by Stephenie Meyer). The book was amazing so I have high hopes for it.

Also two others that are getting a lot of promotion: The Mortal Instruments based on the book City of Bones (which I have and need to read ASAP). And Beautiful Creatures. Need to read this book ASAP too (have wanted to but just haven't had the chance).

Today I'm off to a very abbreviated day at school as later this morning, I have to play a prayer service for a younger lady who was tragically killed by a falling tree.  It's all Beatles songs, of which they chose 11.  I may need to whittle down a few- one of them is "Oh Darling" which I'm not familiar with and one is "Please Mister Postman" - which I'm not sure will work in ANY service.

Then tonight is a rehearsal for A Christmas Carol - The Musical in which I will go, run the play back, fix the vocals if needed and keep my mouth shut as they stage the opening sequence.  I say that because I made quite a few suggestions early on about the need to keep the story focused, we'll see what happens.  It'll just look like a blob on stage if they don't. for 6 years now.

I have to blow leaves off my grass and into the woods, a ritual repeated several times during the fall and post-fall seasons.

I hear a neighbor doing it right now.  I heard another neighbor doing it yesterday.  A way of life here in Leafville, USA.

Hopefully, this one is the last big effort of the season.

REEL-TO-REEL (yes) - Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain.

BLU - LEON MORIN, PRIEST and FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET.  How's that for a double feature?

One more thing about the former:  There were, indeed, three Gozzi sisters, and all of them played the same girl at different ages in this film.  Patricia was in seven films (one was a TV production), Chantal was in five, and Marielle in two.

My friend Jerry Waters who is a great Frances Farmer fan attended a preview of the revival of GOLDEN BOY on November 9th.....at the same theatre where it originally played in 1937.....The Belasco.

He took lots of photos of the theatre and posters, etc....and sent me a Playbill.  I certainly would like to see this show....the cast includes Danny Burstein, Jonathan Hadary, Anthony Crivello, and Seth Numrich as Joe and Yvonne Strohavski as Lorna.

Official opening is December 6!

Jerry put the photos into a nice bound book for me....very nice!

There are some students who are REQUIRED to attend THE CRUCIBLE and it is absolute agony for them, so they text and TALK throughout the evening....  There is also some laughter at strange times during the play....  We have decided that someone should be dragged onstage and accused of witchcraft and then should be dragged backstage never to be seen again.....

Because tonight the show will be attended by the College Theatre Festival adjudicator, and the evening will end with his/her notes.....and tomorrow night is closing night and STRIKE....we had a party last night at a local pizza place....Mama Nunz.  It was most enjoyable.

Mr David Cryer talked a bit about his experiences of playing Firmin in Phantom for 19 years on the road and then on Broadway.  He said that one night the pyrotechnics that usually go off in the Phantom's lair - all seven of them - suddenly went off during the MASQUERADE number....   He said the audience loved it!  He also had some rather ribald lyrics to his songs that he sang for us.....  And also proceeded to do Mr. Danforth as the Swedish Chef.....

Ratiocinations generally don't present themselves as disbosomings, but they can be.  On the other hand, it would be nearly impossible for a ratiocination to be an eructation.

Who else is excited about Warner Archives issuing Blu ray titles?

The most exciting aspect of this is that they are going to be pressed discs vice "burned" (BD vs. BD-R).

And then, there's the issue of "Gypsy" which, if it's anything like the HD version aired on TCM a few months back, will be spectacular.

Is anybody watching "Project Runway All-Stars"?

SPOILAGE

Last night's show was, for me, just a filler episode designed to eliminate those who should never have been on the show to begin with.  Happily, a few of those have departed, but last night's departure of Andrae was three weeks overdue.  He should have gone home instead of Wendy Pepper.  Never understood how he could have been picked for the all stars anyway.  He wasn't one of the bright lights of his season (nor was Ivy Higa a bright light of hers).

I think I liked some of the "safe" designers' outfits better than a couple of those selected as runners-up.  Anthony Michael Auld, however, is my favorite this season as he was during his original season.  He's a smart designer.

Oh, well.

And then some.

End Spoilage

I'm not actually watching Survivor: Philippines, but I'm very surprised that Lisa Whelchel is still in the game.  I watched the first few episodes and saw a couple of meltdowns and felt sure (as did she) that her number was going to be up early.  Last night, there was another scene or two and I thought she'd be a goner.  Not even nominated.

It is very interesting. In the first couple of episodes she did not get along with her tribe. I also thought that her days were numbered. She has done a very good job of managing to stay in the game. Along with Jonathan Penner she is my favorite.

There was really no way that she was going to be nominated last week or this week. Her old tribe needed her. And the other side wanted her.  Plus they were trying to get out the returning players.  Only two people seem to know who she is (the 2 returning players).   I am really enjoying her.

I wish i was watching PR all-stars. It probably won't air here for another month or two. We now have Lifetime Canada. You'd think that would mean we could get the shows at the same time :(

I never much cared for Twinkies when I was young.  Preferred Hostess cupcakes (preferably served on a platter a la the Ann Blyth commercials).

Now, I'm not supposed to eat Twinkies. Cholesteroal, dontchaknow.

Why is it that I'm now craving a package of Twinkies?
I never cared for Twinkies, but a Sno-Ball, now that was something special because it had coconut on it. It didn't matter that the arm rest of my chair probably tasted better than the rest of the Sno-Ball, the coconut made it.

My favorites were Suzi-Qs.  I recently (well, within the last couple of years) discovered orange cupcakes.  They are delish...but no more. :'(

I am back from LINCOLN, which is quite an amazing film. It's much like 1776 in that the film is essentially about the last four months of his life and the necessity of passing the 13th ammendment in the House of Representatives. Like the Declaration of Independence, we know it will be passed, but the suspense hangs over the film until the vote is accomplished. The Kushner screenplay is literate, funny, and very moving; the casting excellent; and the art direction and camera work brilliant. I may see this again on Thanksgiving day.

Yes, the musical film of LES MISERABLES is being released on Christmas day. I saw a wonderful preview. I also saw preview for the new Naomi Watts-Ewan MacGregor film about the 2004 tsunami that looks really excellent. In the 15 minutes before the film I watched commercials for Disney World, Sprite, Sears, the History Channel, and God knows what else. If all these damned sponsors are advertising in movie theatres, why the fat hell ismy ticket so goddamned expensive?

And on a sadder note...Lucille Bliss, Voice of Smurfette, Dies at 96 (http://xfinity.comcast.net/blogs/tv/2012/11/15/lucille-bliss-voice-of-smurfette-dies-at-96/).

Quote
Television icon Lucille Bliss died at the age of 96.

You may not know her face or even her name, but Bliss had a career in movies and television that spanned 60 years. Her achievements included voicing a slew of cartoon characters in movies and on television, including the star of the first animated program produced specifically for TV, “Crusader Rabbit.”

However, a new generation of fans became familiar with Bliss when she became the voice of Smurfette in the 1980s cartoon hit “The Smurfs.”

Other roles included the voice of stepsister Anastasia in Disney’s classic “Cinderella,” as well as the original Elroy in the 1960s television staple “The Jetsons.”

The Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-lucille-bliss-20121115,0,3130903.story) reports that Bliss died a week ago from natural causes at an assisted living center in Costa Mesa, according to the Orange County coroner.

There are two books that came out in the last few weeks that I am really dying to read. My library has them in binding. I was hoping they would be out of binding today so I could see if I was first for both books.

I wonder if they might process them tomorrow. I didn't think they did such things on the weekend but last weekend they did.

I am going to a big craft fair tomorrow at 10am and it is in the same building as the library. But I guess the chance of the books being there by the time I am done are slim.

The allergies still have me down. I'll be off to bed with a Benedryl, even though I'm enjoying my movie, the occasionally mawkish "Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School." Great cast, not the best script in the world. But the dancing makes me want to start class again. I hope that's soon.

Now that there are no more Twinkies to be had, I guess I can't make this dish, which just sounds revolting to me:

Yaya's Twinkie Baklava.

Now that Twinkies may be gone forever, the National County Fair Circuit has announced that their newest junk food item with be Deep-fried Mennen Deodorant Sticks.

Gross!  They could be the reason I am not fond of coconut.

Glad you are home DR GINNY.

Yes Hostess/Wonder Bread is no more.  The flavor of Twinkies changed several years ago when they had to get "healthy" - so it has been quite some time since I had one.

One of the main ingredients in the Twinkie cream filling is also used in rocket fuel and shampoo gel.

Uh, oh, DR Elmore isn't going to like this:

Middletown Restaurant Closes After 78 Years (http://www.middletownjournal.com/news/news/middletown-restaurant-closes-after-78-years/nS7Wq/)

 :'(

I probably ate there, but I can't remember it.

When I first moved to Middletown, my boss Mrs. Brown and her husband drove me past there and Mr. Brown said, "You need to find some handsome fellow to take you there for dinner."  I did, and that handsome fellow and I have celebrated many special occasions there, including our 15th wedding anniversary.  We will miss The Meadows as much as we miss Mr. and Mrs Brown...

And how does Richard feel about that handsome fella?

I have always had a great deal of respect and admiration for former First Lady Barbara Bush.  Her comments today about the election placed her on an even higher level in my book..

""I'm tired now of the elections  People spoke. Move on, get on with it. I want to do other things and not to be ugly."

Amen!

I only went to the Meadows a few times, but I liked the food. I'm more upset over its closing as the death of one more standard of the presence of class and intelligence in Middletown goes abandoned. Soon it will be a town of nothing but bikers, bars, and tattoo parlors.

My kind of town!

Just spent 90 cents on a CD of Kathie Lee Gifford's "Under the Bridge" musical. I may have paid too much.

How many musicals has she written?

That f&*king Snuggles bear in those fabric softener commercials creeps me out with that weird voice; I want to put it and the Pillsbury doughboy onto a grill and watch them fry.

It is rumored that they are both the illegitimate children of Mrs. Butterworth and Mr. Clean.

"I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts!"

Who said that?  And why?

Wasn't it Merv Griffin?

There are some students who are REQUIRED to attend THE CRUCIBLE and it is absolute agony for them, so they text and TALK throughout the evening....  There is also some laughter at strange times during the play....  We have decided that someone should be dragged onstage and accused of witchcraft and then should be dragged backstage never to be seen again.....

hey that was MY idea!!

Back from a great but long day of shooting, a little dinner, and the lovely discovery that my Paypal debit card has been compromised.  The good news is we know EXACTLY who compromised it - Dino's Pizza's driver, who delivered our pizzas today.  No other candidate and since Dino's was completely willing to give us the guy's personal information it's pretty clear.  I'm going to the police tomorrow and will not rest until that lowlife peckerwood is in jail.  The card was used to make a purchase of just under 400 bucks in a liquor store in Brooklyn.  I got on the phone with Paypal and they stopped the card.  Last year when this happened I was issued a new card IMMEDIATELY.  But now Paypal has all kinds of strict new security things in place - I had to enter a new cc into their system so my address could be verified.  That happened, but they also need me to fax a copy of my bank statement to them, which, of course, I can't do till tomorrow. Meanwhile my Paypal account has had some limitation put on it until they get that document.  Once they have it, they should restore everything to normal and only then can I request the new card.  The supervisor I finally spoke to assured me that if I get the document in first thing in the morning, it will probably get straightened out at some point tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I'm without my key debit card for at least two weeks, maybe four, which is a first-class disaster.  So, I'm going to transfer almost everything in the Paypal account into the bank account until this is all resolved.  They did do an immediate refund of the bogus charge.  To say I am infuriated and frustrated would be the understatement of the year.  The joke is, I said to my production assistant as I handed her the card, "I really don't want to give this card this way."  I shouldn't have and will NEVER do that again!

Update:  Supervisor called back - I really think he heard my anger and frustration, because he got them to not need me to fax anything, and so we went in and applied for the new debit card right then and it should be here in a couple of weeks, or hopefully sooner.  He also said he's putting a twenty-five dollar credit in my account, and the account is now back to normal status.  WHAT an ordeal!

Well, I'm off.  The Olympia Film Festival (http://www.olympiafilmsociety.org) is in full swing and tonight, they're showing The Best of the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival @ Washington Center (http://www.olympiafilmsociety.org/calendar/index.php?event_action=view&eid=3484&instance=2012-11-16).  My niece is in one of the short movies being shown tonight!  The piece, this* is what QUEER looks like (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlzdt5xxj-Q), is on YouTube, too.  My niece is right at 1:44-1:45.  If you blink, you'll miss her.  Anyway, she'll get to see herself on a very big screen with a (hopefully) large audience. :D

Be back later!

I totally forgot that I was supposed to work concessions for this! :o The house manager called me at about 5:15...I was supposed to be there at 5:00.  Anyway, I got there and there was one other concessionaire.  I don't know how many people actually came and watched the short movies, but we only sold two cookies and one cup of coffee.

As for the movie short that my niece was in, they ran it first but I missed it because we had to clean up.  Oh, well.  My niece saw it. :)

That's terrible!  At least you found out about it very quickly.  Just a couple of weeks ago, I bought some books from a website that was hacked and they got my credit card info, but fortunately, the website company was able to find out who did it...someone in Korea.  We had to get a new credit card, too.  I hate it when that happens.

Well, it now means I have to methodically go on every website where I use this card and change it.
