Well, you've read the notes, you know what the big announcement is, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I'm sure there will be a big announcement about that any moment now.
-
And the word of the day is: TERPSICHOREAN!
-
And here is the new Kritzerland limited edition CD release:
Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release:
CAREER
Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman
In 1959, Paramount brought Career (based on James Lee’s hit off-Broadway play) to the screen with a terrific cast including Dean Martin, Anthony Franciosa, Shirley MacLaine, Carolyn Jones, Joan Blackman, and Robert Middleton. The film was directed by Joseph Anthony, who was a successful theater director and an expert at turning plays into films – prior to Career he’d already done two for Paramount: The Rainmaker and The Matchmaker. The film was a success with audiences and critics, and received three Academy Award nominations – Best Art Direction (Hal Pereira, Walter H. Tyler, Samuel M. Comer, Arthur Krams), Best Cinematography (Joseph LaShelle), and Best Costume Design (Edith Head). But the film shines in every department, none more so than with its dynamic score by Franz Waxman.
From the exciting opening chords that lead directly into the big city theme, the score is absolutely thrilling. It is the kind of dramatic scoring that Waxman did so brilliantly. He gets inside the drama and the characters – the yearning, the hunger, the nastiness, the competiveness, the romance, the first taste of success, the bitter taste of failure after failure – it’s brilliant music from start to finish. By the time of Career, Waxman’s own career was filled with masterpiece after masterpiece – the 1950s alone brought forth Sunset Blvd., My Cousin Rachel, A Place in the Sun, Prince Valiant, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Rear Window, The Silver Chalice, Mister Roberts, The Spirit of St. Louis, Sayonara, Peyton Place, and The Nun’s Story – to name just a few. During his long and distinguished career, he was nominated for twelve Oscars and took home the prize twice, for Sunset Blvd. and A Place in the Sun. He had a unique musical voice and will forever hold a high place in the pantheon of great film composers.
Waxman’s score for Career is presented here complete and in stereo from the original session tapes housed in the Paramount vaults. We’ve included several bonus cues that appear in the film, including the source music song “(Love Is a) Career” by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen, and a little dance music cue composed by Gus Levene, as well as a couple of the cues from the mono music stem.
It’s always thrilling to be able to bring an unreleased Franz Waxman score to CD, especially one as dynamic and beautiful as Career.
Career is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98, plus shipping.
CDs will ship the second week of December. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I'm testing my new nook only i can't see what i'm typing.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
The end is in sight!!!
-
We had an unexpected viewing pleasure yesterday. On Saturday we took out the 1985 BBC Pickwick Papers with Nigel Stock, Clive Swift, Patrick Malahide and others. It's a 12-episode adaptation, with each one lasting a half hour. We ended up watching the entire 6 hours in one afternoon/evening marathon with a break for dinner. It was great fun and very well done.
-
Oatmeal, walnuts, apple, cinnamon and coffee.
-
Twas a beautiful day yesterday. Temperatures in the 50s and lots of sun. A little more than 3 weeks ago we had a hurricane!
-
There is no way I will get my performance evaluation finished before I leave for my end of year vacation. My boss knows that and agrees. It will have to happen in January unless I come in for an hour during my time off to appease the gods of HR.
-
And on that note, I will take my leave.
Bowl to wash, coffee mug to wash and news and weather to consume on line and on the television.
Bye for now.
-
I so much agree with today's Notes about the mumbling voices on screen today. I have to switch sub-titles on for most modern films because I can hardly understand a word the actors are saying. And, yes, Christian Bale is one of the worst.
-
Good morning, all.
Happy Monday vibes.
Congratulations, bk, on the move to Broadway World.
-
Ben, that Pickwick miniseries sounds like fun. I'm going to have to see if the library has it.

good morning to all

Good morning. I don't know from today's actors. But in my opinion, some of these local women radio/television personalities need some speech therapy or something because many of them have little girl voices. I don't trust an adult woman who talks like a baby.
In other news, I got a permit to enter the newest sewage ponds in town, so maybe I will have a photo or two this afternoon.

Good morning.
It's been rainy since Friday. Very wonderful for me. Winter weather almost.
Busy weekend. Ojai has the holiday lights and decor going up. Ventura shops have their decor in the windows. Winter walk is on the 1st, where Main St., brings in a snow machine for the event during the evening hours.

Panera must have thought if DR Vixmom is complaining then something must be wrong with the food!

Off to work, I'm late again.
I gave my copy of the Dark Knight away, will not be seeing the new one.
Did not like the first, too gloomy.

Monday cheers and vibes.

Still waiting for my visa bill to come in the mail for my new code for paypal. To order cd's. Hope what I want is still available. I hate being in debt. Have been doing better about getting everything paid on time the last few months. It's hard to just cut everything out, cold turkey, but I am learning. Living 65 miles from work has not helped at all. Gas and car maintance is killing me.
But I am cheerful.
;D ;D ;D ;D

I do have music. 8)

Good morning, all.
Oatmeal raisin cookies, banana, coffee.

It's not just the voices. It's the faces, too. They all look alike. There are one or two looks, or styles, or types, for the guys, and the same for the gals.
And it's not a "those damn kids today" old-person rant. The evidence is there on the screen, for anyone who wishes to compare and analyze. Something different has been going on with the young celebrities (I almost said "actors"), and their followers, in the last couple of decades that I don't believe had ever happened in "the arts". They really want -- demand -- sameness, much in the same way they demand the movies themselves all look and sound alike. The plastic-surgery/cosmetic-makeover thing has completely taken over, and has gone completely unquestioned and unchallenged.
-
I so much agree with today's Notes about the mumbling voices on screen today. I have to switch sub-titles on for most modern films because I can hardly understand a word the actors are saying.
Ah yes, I have to do the same thing.

Page 2 DANCE. Maybe we can have Susan the Silent do the Page 2 Dance!
-
Good morning, all! I am off to Toyland.
DR Ben, I love that "Pickwick Papers" adaptation. It's such a fabulous production.
-
The NYPL has some real gems in their collections.

CD is ordered!

Monday morning greetings! Today I have to get my license plate situation resolved and then do some Thanksgiving grocery shopping. I'm not doing much of the cooking - just the turkey & stuffing - but there's still a lot to do.
-
To belatedly answer TCB's question yesterday, the stuffing is almost my single favorite thing on the Thanksgiving dinner table. Like a good actor, its flavor and texture qualities are unique!
-
I'm up, I've announced, and I've approved the Broadway World pages and that should go live any minute now and then I'll provide direct links here. I played the video and it looks fine - someone had a question if you have a choice to play it in hi-def but I believe that's automatic here at least it looks like it to me. They even commented that the files I sent are MORE hi-def than they usually get but they're fine with the file size. I must say that getting them the episode and not having to do the upload to You Tube will be a major plus.
-
Announcement goes live at eleven East Coast time - that is their peak time.
-
"Pickwick Papers" is available by interlibrary loan. A request has been placed. It should be here in a week or so.

Greetings from Toyland!

BK,
Frankly, I hated all of the BATMAN movies; the ones with Bale, as well as those with Michael Keaton, etal.

High praise for an oldie but a great one from BK and Judy Kuhn:

I recall seeing CAREER when I was in college. As an aspiring actor, it have a profound effect on me.
I wish it was available on DVD.

Good morning. That is all I got.

"mumbling" in movies is an issue, as is "mumbling" on stage, especially in musicals.

Oooo, page 3 pancake dance

Well, my The Book of Mormon lottery idea for Wednesday in SF was about a week early. My pal Mark and I decided that we should buck up and go see it despite how we really felt about it and so we planed to go Wednesday. Well, it doesn't open until NEXT Tuesday. And it's here for approx 5 weeks and in that time I don't even have time to see it, let alone try for the "Lottery" as it's all sold out. I'm holding out for the 4th National Tour.
-
The film version of STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF is on TCM at 1PM eastern.
-
I played that album to death, and saw it with Kenneth Nelson (? - I think) in the mid-1960s in Miami.
-
Then I saw the filmed version once, at a drive-in. I still have the soundtrack album as well as the original cast album. Don't remember much of the film.
-
Yes -- Kenneth Nelson and Lesley Stewart, and it was directed by him. Coconut Grove Playhouse, July 1965.

I am curious about this myself....and may tune in for a bit...

From DR Cilla:
DR Jane, thanks for posting the photo of Nikki. Nice to see who the post cards went to and glad she was the envy of all in her class
Thanks. She is a sweet girl.

There is no way I will get my performance evaluation finished before I leave for my end of year vacation. My boss knows that and agrees. It will have to happen in January unless I come in for an hour during my time off to appease the gods of HR.
If it is "only" an hour why not trade one hour working late before you leave for arriving an hour late on your morning back?
-
I so much agree with today's Notes about the mumbling voices on screen today. I have to switch sub-titles on for most modern films because I can hardly understand a word the actors are saying. And, yes, Christian Bale is one of the worst.
Plus the music and background sounds are often not muted anymore.

I know what you mean. While I have a young voice I also had my "phone" voice for work.
-
It's not just the voices. It's the faces, too. They all look alike. There are one or two looks, or styles, or types, for the guys, and the same for the gals.
Especially the weather girls. ;D
-
I did not see Ray Milland, my absolute favorite male voice, or Ginger Rodgers mentioned.
-
While not as distinctive as some other actors I have always liked Henry Fonda's voice.

I know, right? Faces, looks... I find it hard to keep track with modern day movies, especially ones with people in their early 20's , etc, they all look the same. Same hair, same face, I just can't tell them apart, and then it's hard to understand the story
-
Kenneth Nelson was Anthony Newley's standby on B'way. Joel Grey's standby on the road was Barry Dennen.
-
Went back to sleep for a couple of hours.

Yes the announcement is very prominent. And when you click on "broadway tv" it is very easy to see the Outside the Box section. So those things are great. I still find the site extremely busy. I guess I'm just not used to it. Can't wait to hear what the numbers are for the shows now that they are on broadway world.
-
Well, let me put it this way - in the three hours since the announcement, the season two premiere episode has had more views than in a week on You Tube, so that's heartening.
-
Whoa!! :)
-
The season one episodes are crawling along, but mostly everyone will have seen those, given our You Tube views on those - and they've been around for a year already. Still, they all have hundreds of views in three hours.
-
Well this is an interesting film.....I have never seen STOP THE WORLD onstage.....I have the Cast Album.....
What struck me immediately was that the fanfare before the WB logo was the same fanfare used for the Carol Lynley version of HARLOW....also produced by Bill Sargent... And there was an "Additional Material" credit for the Bergmans....and I heard a bit of "I Believed It All' - also from HARLOW at the beginning...
Didn't watch the entire movie....just bits and pieces....but it was interesting.
-
I guess the connection is Al Ham who wrote that song with the Bergmans and did some other composing for HARLOW.....

I saw Newley in the revival tour. I'd love to see the movie one of these days. Alas, it's not on DVD yet.

The movie was interesting -- I'd forgotten about the B&W portions, and the fact that they presented it as though on stage in front of an audience.

THIS CHRISTMAS (http://www.kritzerland.com/bainum.htm) has arrived!!

Back from lunch and handing off the hard drive to the editor. I had salmon, so very low calories.
-
I'm not going to check relentlessly, but after less than six hours, we've had over 2000 views of the Hal Linden episode, and the other episodes are all creeping up towards 1000 views, which is great considering they've been around for a year.

Actually some friends brought a savory cheesecake to the party Saturday. It was green chile cheesecake on a blue corn crust. They were served in cupcake wrappers with a dollop of chile jam on top. Sweet-spicy and wonderful. I may have to make those soon.
-
DR JANE Thanks for sharing the photo of Post Card Girl yesterday!
-
A very nice young man at the GM dealer was able to remove my old rear license plate and install the new one. From there I went to Kroger for the few things I need for Thanksgiving. It was so crowded and it's only Monday - can't imagine what it will be like tomorrow and Wednesday. Came home and put the groceries away and took Richard to the local public library - his first outing since his surgery last Friday. Tomorrow we go to the podiatrist for his first post-op visit.
-
DR JANE Thanks for sharing the photo of Post Card Girl yesterday!
Ditto!

At lunch I caught the film of STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF. What a train wreck, unable to make up its mind whether it wants to be a movie or filmed theatre and the lead, Tony Tanner, is far from charismatic Anthony Newley...not that Newley would've really helped.

As I recall, I devoted a chapter in my book on musicals to this film. Interviewed Millicent Martin, who confirmed that the shoot was a mess.

RE: Voicss and actors.
I recall Jack Carter, who was a superb impressionist, complaining to me years ago that there were no new actors that you could do impressions of. "How," he said, "do you do George Preppard?"
It's pretty much the same today, isn't it?

THE MOUSETRAP has just had its 25,000th performance after 60 years in London! I saw it around about 1965 but have never understood its long lasting appeal.

To belatedly answer TCB's question yesterday, the stuffing is almost my single favorite thing on the Thanksgiving dinner table. Like a good actor, its flavor and texture qualities are unique!
Thank you, Chas, my opinion exactly. My sister and I were discussing Thanksgiving dinner, and she refers to stuffing as wet bread!

Watching The Dust Bowl. I love Ken Burns' work. Really glad I got to see him in person

Keith's cousin called to tell us about her emergency landing today. The door wouldn't stay closed. The biggest deal was the flight attendant who was overly excited about the landing. Fortunately other attendants told her everything would be ok. When she complained to the overly excited attendant he said he was Hawaiian, whatever that means.

DR Cillaliz do you have a pick for Dancing With the Stars? I really love all the groups but one (Emmitt). He just doesn't do it for me. I feel he nowhere near the same calibre as the other dancers. I would be happy with any of the other four winning. I really don't even want him to get to the finale.

Also, Kathie Lee's "Under the Bridge," at all of 90 cents, arrived today. Good singers (Florence Lacey, Jacquelyn Piro). Hoping something in it is good. But I have my doubts.

Beautiful photos, DR Laura. They added a note of serenity that I needed today.

Actually some friends brought a savory cheesecake to the party Saturday. It was green chile cheesecake on a blue corn crust. They were served in cupcake wrappers with a dollop of chile jam on top. Sweet-spicy and wonderful. I may have to make those soon.
I'm sorry, no way. :P ;D
I agree...that would not go well at my family's get-together, at all. :-X
It's not a dessert. It's a side dish to the main course.
I figured that, but I still don't think my family would like it.

Got another 10-hour work day tomorrow. And I'm fading. Night, all.

Yes -- Kenneth Nelson and Lesley Stewart, and it was directed by him. Coconut Grove Playhouse, July 1965.
Is that "directed by him" as in directed by Kenneth Nelson, or as in directed by Anthony Newley?

Back from a fun dinner and evening with the Staitman family.

However, prior to leaving I checked my paypal account, which seemed a bit light given the orders that have come in today, so I paged back a few pages and sure enough they took the money from the fraudulent charge, which they'd put back into my account on Friday night. Yes, they took it OUT of my account. I think you can imagine how fast I was on the phone to Paypal. The gal I talked to got the debit card department on the phone, but instead of switching me there, she told me that I'd be receiving an e-mail in which I had to confirm the events and explain what happened. I EXPLAINED that I had already EXPLAINED what happened on Friday, which is why they put the money back into my account in the first place. Then she said once I'd responded to the e-mail then the investigation would happen and the money would be put back into my account at some indeterminate time. I told her I was done speaking to her, and to switch me to the card department at once. This she did. I asked her to get me right to a supervisor. This she did not. The fellow I got began to give me that same line and I shut him down instantly and told him not to waste one MINUTE of my time and to put a supervisor on. Once the supervisor came on I calmly said, "Let me tell you how this is going down. You are putting MY money back into MY account right now - there is no discussion and I am not getting off the phone until you do. I am the VICTIM here. You can send me any e-mail you want and I'm happy to answer any questions you need answers, but you have ALL the fact and you've had them since Friday and how DARE you take this money from my account knowing it was a fraudulent charge that you allowed to then go through." He said, "Go ahead and refresh your screen" I did and the money was back. He asked me to please respond to the e-mail he was going to send and I said I would but again told him that I gave every piece of information on Friday and there would be no new information. I got the e-mail and responded VERY strongly to each and every point, most of the responses being variations on "When the fraudulent charge was made in BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, I was making a legitimate charge in NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, and since that is WHERE I LIVE, it would not be possible for me to get to BROOKLYN, NEW YORK one minute later to make a four hundred dollar charge at some liquor store. At the end of the e-mail was the bit about the return of the money being "provisional" until the case is closed - I said "There is NOTHING provisional about the return of the money." Someone stole my debit card number and made a fraudulent charge, a police report has been filed, you've killed the card and are issuing a new one. The End and I MEAN The End." I sent it and that had better be the end of THAT.

Sorry, I had a long day at therapy. I will post tomorrow.
