Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pummeled by an Emu, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently being pummeled by the hens.

Sondheim sticks to his guns. Here's a quote from an interview in the Guardian:

What's the worst thing anyone ever said about you?

I remember a sentence from a British review of Sweeney Todd by a man named James Fenton, which went something like "Sweeney Todd is a tissue of bullshit from beginning to end". But hey, if you're going to have a thin skin, you're not an artist that's going to be reviewed. I try not to read my reviews, but there's always some friend who'll come along and, under the guise of trying to comfort you, let you know that you've been speared.

Can you request/suggest ebooks? I'd think it would work the same way as regular books. And do they have the other books as ebooks?

Also, is it really that bad on your shoulder that you can't read any hardcovers? Even if you lean them against something? I know I usually use my bagabook. BUt even without it, I don't find I have to hold the hardcovers much.

Good morning, all.

Oy, what a night!  I woke up in the middle of it, with the sudden realization that I'd scheduled two things for Thursday evening, and just pounded out a note of apology to the lesser (but not Loesser) of the parties involved.    :-[

I am ready for my coffee, Mr. DeMille.

This goes without saying.

So let DR Jennifer and I both say it.

DMVs, alas, do not get quite into that level of customer service and satisfaction.

RE: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS

DR Cillaliz, I am surprised that your mom dislikes Tony so much. Almost everything I had read prior to the result was from people saying how much they liked Tony. I think people wanted him to win just as much (or maybe even more) than they wanted Melissa to win.  Think about it. He's been on for 14 seasons and never won.  Part of the reason I was happy was for him. He seems like such a nice person.  I was pretty surprised with the result. I liked both teams fairly equally. But preferred Derek and Shawn a bit more (I have a soft spot for Derek since I think he is the most fabulous professional on the show).  And with their gymnastics/dance and with the high of their instant dance... well it seemed like they would win for sure.  I really think that their first dance didn't sit right with some people. I love Derek and I love that dance, but it just didn't sit right with me.

I swear, there can't possibly be one thing that BK missed while growing up.  And I can't begin to say how much I envy that.

This LADYBUG, LADYBUG, for instance.  Never heard of it!  I did go to DAVID AND LISA, and even if my memories of that are sketchy, I'm forever grateful (not sorry) I honed in on the Frank Perry type of film at that tender age.  I have to see this one.  Stat.

Anyone 'else' watching "The Voice" this season?

I've been following since the first audition.  Last night, we learned who the final 6 are.

Things I've learned this season:  Adam Levine is a phenomenal singer.  Blake Shelton and Ceelo Green are great artists.  Christina Aguilera is vastly overrated as a singer.

Last night, one of the season's three best singers was sent home.  Happily, the two very best are still in the competition, but the front-runner has not, IMO, evolved in his presentation the past couple of weeks and is only going for "moments" rather than putting effor into the whole songs.

Sigh.

Good morning, all! This cold is Fionnuala's Malady, since I believe, in examining the past month of my health history, that Fionnuala brought this cold from Dublin and passed it on to me when she was here several weeks ago. Last night, I took the Nyquil at 9pm, went to bed at 10pm, coughed until midnight, when I decided this was SHIT and decidedto try my newly purchased neti pot. Couldn't hurt.

Well, by 12:30, I had clean sinuses and there was no more coughing for the remainderof the night. I don't think I got to sleep until after 1:30, but that neti pot is my new friend.

But, I have no voice today and I'm staying home. At some point Idohave to meet up with Niall and, possibly, Paul Byrum. I would like to see Niall before he returns to Ireland tomorrow. So, I will workhere, peel and chop potatoes andcarrots and finish Th Soup.

It's windy this morning.  I think The Association already took care of musicalizing Windy.  Not be confused with The Beach Boys song Wendy.  And of course, Lerner and Lowe went as far as giving the wind a name called Mariah.  Or was it Maria?

Glad to hear that's on their lineup, DR Jrand62!  I'll look for it.

My first thought was of the TWILIGHT ZONE episode "The Shelter".  Or even "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".

That time period, that subject matter, the thought provoking films and TV shows created around those ideas back then ... they have "DR ChasSmith" written all over them.

I have needed to use this product for a long time, but I never have been able to force the solution into my nasal passages by squeezing the bottle.  My solution:  I bought one of those electric nasal rinse units...you mix the solution in the unit's base and then insert a nozzle into one nostril and turn on the unit.  A gentle stream of solution enters the nasal passage and exits through the other nostril.  It really works for me.

I have also been using BreatheRight strips at bedtime for 18 years...and they work very well for me.

re: DR Ron Pulliam's comments.  It is easier for some people to do the neti than others. It took me a while to be able to do this. I was pumping it vs pushing and not releasing. Also I cannot do the whole bottle, whereas my sister can do it in a few seconds.

I've spent two hours peeling potatoes and slicing celery and carrots , and the soup is finished.  It smells quite good. I'm going to clean up and go to Lincoln Center to meet Niall and Paul Byrum. On my way back, I'll stop at a drug store and pick up some more freezer containers, and put the soup away.

Then, I will clean up the mess I've made.

We are supposed to be getting the first of several big, bodacious rain storms here in Oakland today.

At first, it was going to hit around 2 a.m.

Then, this a.m. around 6:30, I learned it would be happening around 9 a.m.

It is now almost 11 a.m. and I've seen precious little "storm" material.  It's overcast, it has sprinkled a bit and it is windy (oh, windy! windy! windy!).

The rain "storm" is supposed to be furious and end around noon.  At this rate, I'm suspecting it passed us by entirely.

Help me understand something:

A couple of years back, when Peter Jackson was not only producing "The Hobbit" but was taking over the reins as director, the plan was for two films to be made from the one book.

Now I'm given to understand there are THREE films from this one book?  THREE?  Seriously?

Most likely because the uploader is full. You can't upload pictures directly to the site anymore. You have to use Photobucket or some other host site. If the uploader gets emptied you will be able to post a picture but until then it won't work.

What a day!  As mentioned in the notes, I've been having a devil of a time falling asleep before three, and that was certainly the case last night, once again.  Once asleep, however I slept until the phone rang - and that was 11:50.  I couldn't believe it.  I had to to meet dear reader Jeanne at 12:30.  I was out of the house in eight minutes flat, but then had to fill the motor car up with gas.  Timing was on my side going to Beverly Glen - got there very fast, but was behind slow drivers until the road splits into two lanes.  Then I zoomed past Mulholland and was zooming along when an Acura turned right and got in front of me - that they had to do very quickly.  After that, however, they were going about fifteen miles an hour all the way down, past Sunset towards Wilshire at which point I finally got around the fool.  Then I zoomed all the way down to Olympic, turned right, turned left, zoomed down to Pico and got to the restaurant to find no street parking in front, so I had to park a block away.  With ALL of that, I was only five minutes late - pretty good!

Lunch was quite lovely and Jeanne is a wonderful conversationalist.  I was still a bit groggy until I got some Diet Coke in me.  I had a Panini sandwich consisting of salami, pepperoni and provolone.  It was small but very good - if one gets that kind of sandwich at the Subway (spicy Eyetalian) in the footlong size it's over 900 calories, but that's with eight pieces of salami and eight pieces of pepperoni.  Here there were only two slices of each and the sandwich was like having a six-inch size, so I have to assume the sandwich itself was under 500 calories - with it I had a tiny side salad - all very good.

That reminds me, I still need to read CATCH ME.  It still isn't available at my library as an eBook, guess I'll buy it.

Unfortunately yes.  It would be ok if I didn't do most of my reading in bed with the light out.  I even rest the Nook on top of me while I read or roll on my side with it on the bed.

It is my understanding that it is the publisher's who have decided not to sell certain eBooks to the libraries.  I could ask about this.  Our library eBooks are a statewide library service vs through our individual ones so I'm not sure how I could request a book.

Help me understand something:

A couple of years back, when Peter Jackson was not only producing "The Hobbit" but was taking over the reins as director, the plan was for two films to be made from the one book.

Now I'm given to understand there are THREE films from this one book?  THREE?  Seriously?

How ones gets 3 movies from The Hobbit I don't know.

5 minutes late, not bad at all.

I don't go to the movies very often. i don't really enjoy sitting in a seat for 2+ hours.

But yesterday I went to see Breaking Dawn part 2. And I was looking forward to seeing some of the previews. I did see one for a movie that looks funny with Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as the grandparents.

I also saw the one for Les Miserables. It's interesting that the preview is all in song.

I also saw one I was very excited to see, The Host. That book was so good, and also by Stephenie Meyer (Twilight Saga). One preview I really wanted to see but which wasn't shown was for another book to movie adaptation (Beautiful Creatures). I still need to read that book. But met the authors when they came here in September.

Here is a recipe that doesn't use cream per se, but uses good butter.  It's REALLY good

Ingredients:
1 lb. fresh fettuccine noodles
4 quarts boiling, salted water
1 cup unsalted Plugra butter, softened (Or use normal butter if you can’t find Plugra)
1/3 to 1/2 cup Parmesano Reggiano cheese, freshly grated

Steps:
1. Melt butter over very low heat. Go ahead and boil the pasta while the butter is melting.
2. Whisk in grated parmesan cheese; continue whisking over a low heat until the cheese melts and the butter/cheese sauce becomes a creamy consistency.
3. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and place in large pasta bowl; toss with sauce. Garnish with freshly cracked black pepper.

I've not heard of Plugra butter.  I use European style butter for baking & my personal use.  Keith uses regular butter, but then he uses more than I do.

I can't be sure but I think I used both butter & cream.  Is that possible?  It is one of the rare dishes I made that I never had a recipe for.

I"m not sure. Each publisher has their own set of rules. Some don't even allow any bloggers (only librarians...).  I don't really think that my reviewing will change the minds of those publishers who only accept bloggers. But if I do get accepted for a certain publisher and they see my reviews then that might help them accept me next time I request from them.

ChasSmith, Amazon Prime is incredible and more than pays for itself if you order from them a lot.  It's free two-day shipping on anything, and you usually get pre-orders on release day no matter what.  And add to that that you can watch any movie on their site for free - just well worth it.

I agree.  Amazon Prime is a great investment.  It paid for itself within the first couple of months.

Isn't the entire musical sung onstage?

Some days living in NYC is so neat: I got out of a taxi at 81st Street  & Broadway and held the door for Phyllis Newman and her nurse/companion to get in. It was nice to see her. She said she couldn't take my hand since she'd just done her nails. Jungle Red, I believe!

Do you know Miss Newman?

I always want to fall asleep when I get in bed - and I'm tired when I do - there's just so much going on in my head and so I'm thinking instead of sleeping.

Just imitate me.  I don't ever think nothin'.

NY doesn't seem so large the way New Yorker's tend to run into people they know.

I almost always run into someone from Washington when I am in New York.  Or Las Vegas.

Yes, but I think I read somewhere that the movie will not be entirely through-sung.

I've stayed away from fettucine alfredo ever since I heard it described as a "heart attack on a plate."  That doesn't mean I don't eat other food that's not good for me!

I'm enjoying the song, THIS CHRISTMAS, as well as the CD. I've always said that there just aren't enough Jewish Christmas songs.

As one of the two most Jewish people on this site, I should have sung that song as a duet with Sandy.

Just watched "Miracle on 34th Street." In one of the previews from 1947, both a teen girl and a studio boss use the word "Groovy." I didn't realize the word dated back that far.

So, rehearsal wasn't half bad.  It's shaping up to be an ok show.  I'm a little tired of the material, the muscle memory of the returning cast year by year is getting to be an issue creatively.  Some people just can't do something new, or just doesn't want to.   I'll keep trying.  I'm hoping in 2016, we'll switch to Scrooge-The Musical.

Shoot me if I make it that far.

Well, at our rehearsal of "The Wind in the Willows," we had our final run-through without an audience.  Tomorrow will be an "invited" audience and Friday, we open!  The run-through went pretty well.  A few goobers, but nothing horrible.  The sound cues are still being adjusted (and added to), but overall, I felt pretty confident with what I've got to do. :D

Yes, this is true.  The publishers decide who they sell to and for how much.  It's ridiculous that certain publishers will also sell the downloadable audiobooks to libraries for $50, $80, or even $100...for a frakin' download! >:(

Help me understand something:

A couple of years back, when Peter Jackson was not only producing "The Hobbit" but was taking over the reins as director, the plan was for two films to be made from the one book.

Now I'm given to understand there are THREE films from this one book?  THREE?  Seriously?

Not only are they making three films out of the one book, I've read that several characters from the other movies who are not even in the book "The Hobbit" will be in the new movies.  WTF??
