Title: FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT AND THE GYPSY IN MY SOUL
Post by: bk on November 29, 2012, 12:05:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes fought the good fight and had some gypsy in their soul, and now it is time for you to post until the fighting cows come home - they're currently singing about Caroline, the new cow, the true cow, the moo cow.

With all this talk of "Gypsy," I went to Screen Archives Entertainment to (finally) pre-order the Blu-ray of Gypsy (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/22974/).  I decided to look at what other Blu-rays are about to be released and I saw that Dick Tracy (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=22840) is going to be released on Blu-ray!  I ordered both!

I saw Deathtrap twice on stage. Stacey Keach on Broadway and Brian Bedford in Toronto. Keach played the role with a bit more humor than Bedford.

I disliked the film mainly because the changed ending of the play. (A minor plot point is explained in the play)

The film played up the moment when Caine and Reeves kiss.

The final moments of Act One is one of the most thrilling and exciting moments I ever had in the theater

TOD: The "Gypsy" I saw with Patti LuPone is probably the best night of theater I've had. She writes that she was different every night, and her "Rose's Turn" was different from the one I saw on YouTube, but her intensity and Laura Benanti's growing steeliness made for a great evening.

In all my years of reviewing theater, I recall seeing the show only one other time. It was a summer stock production that had a stage in the round, so they wrote in a fourth stripper for "You Gotta Have a Gimmick," so someone was facing each part of the audience during the number. They also wrote in lyrics for her to sing. Not very good lyrics, either, as you might imagine.

YouTube has a host of ""Rose's Turn" videos, including some great rarities. There's a recording of Merman during her final performance, performing the number at a much slower pace than the one on the album. Betty Buckley, Tyne Daly (much better than the recording suggests), even the boy from "Glee" are all there.

TOD

Of the several productions of GYPSY I've seen (none of which I'm sorry to say were any of the Broadway ones), the most recent was the best -- a community production last year in Torrington, CT at the wonderful renovated 1930s movie palace, the Warner Theatre.  The woman who played Rose could not have been more believable or brilliant in every way.  But everyone else was very nearly her equal, and I had to sit there and eat my heart out because I'd been asked to play in the pit, couldn't because of schedule conflicts, and the orchestra was spot on perfect and thrilling as well.

And then I've seen a few stinkers.  But the thing about the stage version is that it's perfect -- book, songs, orchestration -- and something of that always comes through, however excruciating the performance.

I'd grown up loving every note of the original cast album, and when I first saw the movie I was thrilled to see the thing unfold on screen but somewhat less thrilled with some of the music.  I bought the soundtrack LP, which I still have, but it wasn't one I returned to much over the years.  Now I can much better appreciate all that's great about it, and I shall do exactly that very soon.  (I spot-checked the Blu-ray when it arrived yesterday, and it looks and sounds fabulous.)

Have to agree about the extreme key changes acting as black holes and sucking in everything around them.  But as we have all learned to accept here or there, "it is what it is", and that Warner production is something to behold on a good screen and sound system.

And to portray that (perfect) original overture being played/dubbed onscreen under the main titles = pure genius.  (If I recall, it's unaltered, but I'll check it closely when I watch next time.)

Good morning, all! I thnk this neti pot is a good thng. I was asleep before midnight, and at 7:15 when the alarm rang, I didn't feel drugged out of my mind.

I will shortly head to Toyland, where it will be a looooooooong day: I have work to accomplish before the 1:30 meeting with the Man from Philadelphia and my colleagues, which could be either a good thing or a disaster. Either way, it will be long meeting, since the Man from Philadelphia likes to hear himself talk. It will be good, though, to see my colleagues, and - much as I gripe about TMFP - I like him, and I think he's a good man.

TOD:
I've seen onstage Lupone and Tyne Daly, and I once played Pasty, the stage manager at the strip joint, in a summer theatre production.

I found Lupone too hard driven, and all of her music too fast and charmless, as though she confused the words aggressive and speedy. I did like Benanti.

I liked Daly better, although her weaknesses as a singer are really apparent on the cast album.

Midler? I have no memories of it now.

I saw the Midler the night it was first broadcast, and likewise have no memory of it.  Didn't it at least follow the book pretty well?  Not even sure about that now.

I think the Tyne Daly recording itself leaves something to be desired, but I've heard nothing but great things about her portrayal on stage.

Maybe you could get one of those book holders (you place the book in it and it holds the book for you!). I've seen pictures of people reading books in the bath with a bath book holder. I'd be too afraid that the book would fall in.

Midler is out of her element in the heavy-lifting scenes of Gypsy, and she later admitted that she didn't get it. Vocally, she's not bad.

I'm not fond of Russell. I never get the feeling that she could have ever been anywhere near as good as Natalie Wood. Arthur Laurents once said, in his inimitable way, that Russell's "Rose's Turn" was all about the shoes, a pair of black-and-white things that shine so brightly they upstage the performer.

I heard the production was terrible, but Bernadette Peters' version of "Rose's Turn" on the Tonys was a knockout.

If BP had done in the theatre every night what she did on the stage at the Tony Awards it would have been a different show. I saw her Gypsy and I saw the Tony Award performance and they were two completely different animals. She didn't do well in the show. I remember Laurents going on and on about how Rose was a small woman and Peters fit her physically so well. Bullshit. Just because you're right for a part physically doesn't mean you'll do a good job. She was a knockout on the Tonys but she was a mess on stage during the show. It's all supposition on my part, but that's probably one of the reasons why Laurents finally agreed to let PL do Gypsy, because he was not happy with the BP production.

TOD:

I saw Angela Lansbury do GYPSY at the Shubert several years ago.

The movie, though directed by Mervyn LeRoy (one of my mentors) is okay; not great.  I think that Bette Midler's TV version is better, but its been so long since I've seen that version that I don't have any distinct memories of it.

Despite the fact that Jule Styne was once (briefly) a publicity client, GYPSY has never really been one of my all-time favorite musicals.

I ordered DEATHTRAP too, but as an afterthought so it'll be here in a few more days.  I only ever saw the movie on pan-and-scan TV years ago, have never read or seen the original play, so it's actually one of my rare gambles in buying a film.  But I wanted to enjoy the opportunity to properly view it, and if I don't like it enough to keep it, I have a DEATHTRAP-fanatic friend I can gift it to.

I grew up on breakfast cereals and shredded wheat was one of those I ate dutifully but never really liked, preferring all the sweeter stuff instead.  Of course you can sugar it up yourself, but somehow that one never rang my bell.  I don't normally eat cereal these days, but I'd probably like it now.  That said, if I were to go on a good cereal binge (which is exactly what it would be), I'd end up sticking with my all-time favorites -- Frosted Flakes, Raisin Bran, and just a couple of others.  And I actually forget what those other favorites are at the moment.

He goes on and on in his book on directing about how upset he was with BP. But he also says he went in after the show opened and helped her with her performance. Perhaps that's what did it.

TOD - The only time I've seen GYPSY on stage was a local high school production that was awful.  I think too often high schools cast kids who can sing and dance but have absolutely no acting ability.  When I was too young to see the show myself, I remember my parents seeing Ethel Merman on tour in Detroit (maybe pre-Broadway?).  They were quite taken with the "If ya wanna bump it..." lyric.

I've only seen Gypsy on stage once.  That was last year.  Rose was played by a 28 year old actress who really did a fine job, but there is something to say for life experience and maturity - not to say she was immature, but I think you understand what I mean.  That said, with me not really knowing the show at all, I found it dull.  I haven't see either movie all the way through either.  In fact, the only time I've seen parts of the Midler version was a long time ago in a gay bar.  While I love a lot of the score, I was just never into it like I guess I should be as a musical theatre person.  People say it's the epitome of musical theatre, but I don't get that.  Chock it up to ignorance, I suppose.  I've experienced all the "Rose's" from recordings and such, and never understood why Bernadette Peter's played the role.  She does nothing for me past her performance of the Witch in Into the Woods and I find her CD of Gypsy in it's proper place on the shelf between Midler and LuPone.

GYPSY.....   I have loved the musical since the first time I saw it at the movies!!  So terrific....all the dancing and the songs!  And I love Rosalind Russell as Rose.....

I think it was said here once....perhaps by MR BK.....that she is the only first class actress who has played the role....Lansbury and Daly, nothwithstanding....

And I love Natalie Wood.....Karl Malden....eh....

And actually the film Electra is Roxanne Arlen who spent many years as Bud Collyer's sidekick on Beat the Clock...... and she was married for awhile to Red Buttons....   :-\

I loved the soundtrack.  A few years ago, a CD was released that included several of Russell's singing tracks....now available only as an MP3 release at Amazon....but it is interesting to hear....  The listing says the last few tracks are Lisa Kirk, but they are indeed Russell.  And I think the Rose's Turn is closer to the soundtrack mix than the one that was originally on the LP, with a bit more Russell mixed in with Kirk.

Some sources say there is a bit of Rose Marie in there some place as well.

Has anyone noted the Ethel Merman caricature in the dressing room?  Or did I have another hallucination?

I love, love, love the movie "Gypsy".

Saw it a few times in its initial run.  Have owned every home video incarnation and watched it dozens and dozens of times.  Never tire of it.

A very odd thing about this movie:  How did a virtual no-name conductor at that time (Frank Perkins) get the plum job of being music director when Warners had Ray Heindorf doing "The Music Man"?  Heindorf had handled more than one musical film at a time in his past.  Why would he pass on one of the theater's most glorious scores?  Any number of versatile folks with immaculate credentials/expertise were available at the time.

I was once told (as a rumor, mind you, rather than as a substantiated fact) that the reason Perkins got credit was that they actually hired some folks still contracted at MGM to work on the music.  The rumor continued that it was Roger Edens, wunderkind of the Freed Unit at MGM, who was conducting the orchestra in the opening of "Gypsy".   Edens worked his magic on Warners' "A Star is Born" with Judy Garland, but was uncredited.  Instead, all credit went to his partner, Leonard Gershe (who was not under contract to MGM).

Officially, though, it's a phenomenal score for a musical movie and I've always considered the orchestral performance second to none.

While I'm talking early 60s, I'll doff my hat to the Capitol soundtrack album to "Bells Are Ringing" -- one of the most captivating soundtrack albums I've ever heard.  The musical performance, conducted by Andre Previn, is fantastic.  The recording has a brillant sound quality.  It's a total joy to me.

I cannot stomach the Bette Midler version of Gypsy.  I didn't say Russell was the only first-class actress to play Rose, as I feel several were, but I do love her performance.  The overture is truncated quite a bit for the film.  As to Frank Perkins, he had written a hit song (Stars Fell on Alabama) and was quite active at Warner Bros. in TV - 77 Sunset Strip, The Roaring Twenties, Hawaiian Eye, and Bourbon Street Beat - he also wrote the music for The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Mary, Mary, The Couch, and Palm Springs Weekend.

As to Deathtrap, yes if one hasn't seen or read the play then I suppose one could enjoy the film on some level, although I don't think I would have.

Watching the YouTube footage of Lansbury is fascinating. Her Rose tries to upstage Gypsy at every turn in "Together." There's more hatred of and exasperation with Louise than any other Rose I've encountered. She is the star, no matter if she's not in the spotlight. Oddly enough, it's the one recording I never bought on CD.

I listen to the Tyne Daly recording the least because of her cold she supposedly had on the day of the recording. It makes her sound unmusical, which her other recordings, "Call Me Madam" and "On the Town," belie. I do like Christa Moore and Jonathan Hadary, though.

RE: The Outside the Box webseries...since I was absent on the day this was being discussed, I do want to make it known that although I might not have made mention each time a new episode was up, I have certainly enjoyed them all, with my particular favorite being the very first episode and the Exorcist episode.

BK, do be aware that people may watch and enjoy, but not comment.

I do that many times on Facebook. I will see a post or photo or a video that gives me a very good laugh or make me smile. Sometimes I will "like" it, sometimes I will comment on it, sometimes I will even "share" it. But sometimes I might just enjoy it and move on to other things. But it doesn't mean that I did not like it.

I am sure you must do the same. No doubt you have read some of my interviews with various B movie stars which have been published in magazines that you have, or have had subscriptions to (VideoWatchdog; Scarlet Street, Scarlet the Film Magazine). However, you have never once mentioned on HHW or in person as to whether you liked the interview or not. In fact there has been total silence from you in regards to my work.

Possibly this means that you did not enjoy the interviews. But if you did enjoy them, and said nothing about them to me, well, there is an example.

MBarnum, I don't think that's quite accurate - I'm fairly certain when I was reading these things, which I haven't for years now, that I said something about enjoying the interview or interviews I read.  The sad fact is, I haven't read anything in any of those magazines for probably six years now - when the new version of Scarlet came I got the first three issues because they sent them to me, but I never had time to actually even open them - they're still sitting in the book room unread.  But of the ones I've looked at prior to all that, I certainly enjoyed them and I'm pretty sure I either said it to you in person or here.

Although, as a child, I may or may not have been stolen by Gypsies.

...or "abandoned" by gypsies?    ;)

Oh, I hadn't thought of that!

I can see it now...a band of roving gypsies native to India...and one of the young women finds herself with child from an American.  The child is born with blue eyes and blond hair...and the king of the gypsies says, "No way, Sanya!  You must give him up."

And "that" would explain a lot!   ;)

Congrats to DR GEORGE on the right person getting the job!

Thanks John and Jack.  Everyone seems pretty happy about it.  And, since she's local, it won't take very long for her to start the job...assuming that the negotiations go well. :)

Excellent.

Tonight on TCM  - The Iron Petticoat starring Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn.

I have never seen this movie.....but I think I will give it a look.   I remember many years ago seeing an ad for it in a book, but I had NEVER heard of it.....the previews look pretty horrendous......and the production history is tumultuous....

I will be there in front of the screen at 8 p.m. EST.

Since BK first mentioned Arleta, I've waited for my brain to kick in and recall where that is.  It never came to me, so I've looked it up and am ready to sit back and enjoy the travelogue.

What the world really needs for these occasions are tiny cams mounted inside and outside the BK-mobile, and a running commentary.

Arleta sounds like the name of a dusty, dried-up Texas town out in the middle of nowhere (except for oil fields and rigs).

Does your library have the other Lisa Garnder ebooks? If so then it makes little sense since Catch Me is part of a series. But i guess if they have the book in hardcover ...

Maybe you could get one of those book holders (you place the book in it and it holds the book for you!). I've seen pictures of people reading books in the bath with a bath book holder. I'd be too afraid that the book would fall in.

Thanks for the suggestions but you forget, I read in bed with a flashlight turned away from Keith & am constantly shifting my position from my back to my sides.  I like the consistency of the size & weight of an eReader.  I know what angles I can hold it without hurting my shoulder, plus and a very big plus it is, I can pick it up from the night table without causing a sharp pain in my shoulder.

My library seems to have her other books making this last one a perfect example of the reduced number of recently released eBooks available at the library.

I have become a big fan of Dick Francis.  Most of the time he writes stand alone mysteries.  He has one series of 4 books, 3 of which are on eBook.  The second book in the series isn't.  I find that very odd.

Book 3 became available at the library so I went ahead and read it.  Sunday while walking around town I popped into a used book store and they had the second book in paperback.  I think it will feel strange now to read a paperback after all this time.  I will read the paperback prior to reading the 4th book.

The drive: Long.  The iPhone GPS thing I have kept trying to have me turn on streets I didn't care to, but I held my ground and took Van Nuys Blvd. all the way up, which was fascinating in its awfulness.  First off, as I passed Roscoe I could not believe how different everything was - that was mere moments from the apartment I lived in from 1971 to 1975.  As I drove north from there it continued to be so weird - I knew the area like the back of my hand - in 1971 it wasn't a great area, but it was still very middle class caucasian there.   The mall by Parthenia is not even a shadow of its former self - May Co. gone, all the other stores gone.  It's now some kind of huge ninety-nine cent store.  The whole area there looks sleazy, and the buildings are filled with graffiti and not American graffiti.  Then I passed the Panorama movie theater - we went there several times back in the day - nice single-screen theater.  Not any more.  A church now - what else is new?  From there it just got worse and worse.  Then I saw why the GPS tried to get me to ultimately take Woodman all the way - because Van Nuys curves around and suddenly the two streets cross each other - both are north/south streets but at a certain point Van Nuys becomes east/west - very weird.  I found the DMV and parked, waiting in line five minutes to get my appointment number - I am here to tell you I was the only white boy in the jernt.  My 1:40 appointment happened at 1:45, got a nice gal, explained the situation, took the vision test, passed with flying colors, and she entered that into the computer, got off that screen, then double-checked by going back and told me it's now showing as "in progress" to be done.  I will, of course, triple check by calling later today.   I was out in five minutes.  I took Woodman all the way to Moorpark, then ended up at Jerry's Deli for a Cobb salad and a bagel.  Home now until rehearsals start.

Interesting ride!

I don't know that area -- though I did get familiar enough with the Van Nuys / Roscoe area, and other stuff surrounding the airport, in conjunction with going to my flying lessons, meeting people at their houses around there, etc.  And I now know how it is to find things changed in exactly the way described here.  I've learned some hard lessons in that in revisiting my home towns of Columbus and Fort Lauderdale.

I am trying. She had a very interesting life. We don't have any photos of her when she was young (except one). I think she was orphaned (or abandoned) very young, but I never asked her such a personal question.

I watched soaps for a very short period of time.  It was in 1995. Only because my best friend was very ill and her sister came out to visit. We couldn't do ANYTHING until all the soaps were over for the day because her sister was addicted to them. All I remember is that someone was possessed by the devil. She probably still is.

Thursday morning greetings!  We are expecting DS Rob sometime today to pick up a package he had delivered here.  This evening we'll be at the University of Dayton, where I'm on a panel reviewing student presentations in my friend Andrea's grantwriting class.

Hmmm, would that be a Christmas present for Mary Linda?

It's been a long time since I saw DEATHTRAP on stage or in the movies, but I remember being furious that the movie gives away the surprise ending right up front.  Am I thinking of the right play/movie?

That sounds more like SLEUTH.

No, it was the watch he ordered for himself that she and I tried to get him to postpone so we could get it for him for Christmas!

I love the movie version of GYPSY, and I love Rosalind Russell as Rose.  Of course, part of that, as I have mentioned before, is that my Aunt Connie not only sounded like Rosalind Russell, but she was the real Auntie Mame.

As far as CDs, I guess the one I play most often would have to be Angela Lansbury.  Love it.

I watched THE ARROW last night....and I think I saw John Barrowman on there playing something - but the scene went by pretty fast.

Barrowman is a recurring character...he's the MAJOR bad guy in the city.

Really?  I guess I have no idea who John Barrowman may be.

Ahhh.....well since it was my first time watching, and I missed the opening credits....that explains that.  One more reason to watch.

As if Stephen Amell isn't reason enough!

I TOOK WOODMAN ALL THE WAY is the name of my next novel.

As far as DEATHTRAP goes, I saw it on Broadway with John Cullum.    I did not enjoy the play.  Stll, as an actor I would love to do the show, just as long as I don't have to watch it.  If I remember correctly, the two male leads don't actually kiss in the play, although they did in the movie.

I love the first line in the play Deathtrap:

"Deathtrap. A thriller in two acts. One set, five characters. A juicy murder in Act One, unexpected developments in Act Two. Sound construction, good dialogue, laughs in the right places. Highly commercial."

Watched a TV version of "Miracle on 34th Street" that featured MacDonald Carey and Teresa Wright. Thomas Mitchell, an actor I generally like, was Santa, only he was a little too maniacal in the role. The script lost about a half-hour (the running time was about an hour), and it all felt like it was in shorthand.

The ending was the weirdest, though. The Susan Walker character is the one who has the thought of having the post office deliver the mail to Kris Kringle at the court, yet Carey's attorney takes credit for getting Santa off.

Well, at least it wasn't the David Hartman version.

Did the people on "Grey's Anatomy" ever do any actual medical work besides sit around and talk?

I have never seen any character on the soaps actually work; all they do is sit about andtalk about themselves for the benefit of  viewers who haven't tuned in for over a year.

I don't know about "The Office" or any of the soaps, but the doctors on "Grey's Anatomy" are frequently shown operating...successfully and not. ::)

Tonight's final dress rehearsal of "...Willows" went quite well.  I goobered just a couple of sound cues, but overall, it was a success.  The kids in the audience liked it (there were a few moments of restlessness) and it seems that most of the adults really enjoyed it, too.  We open tomorrow and then we have four, count 'em, FOUR weekends of performances.

As for Roses in Gypsy, I've only seen the original movie (love it) and the Bette Midler remake (like it).  I was also in a local production about 20 or so years ago.  I was George, Uncle Jocko's assistant and one of the placard changers.  We had placards with the names of each scene and Alice and I changed them.  That was actually a lot of fun.  Our Rose was a woman named Karen and she was an old-school belter like Ethel.  That show was a lot of fun. ;D
