Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no struggle whatsoever, and now it is time for you to post until the occasionally struggling cows come home.

Good morning, all.

Happy Thursday vibes.

With regard to a TOD earlier this week, here's Lee Remick doing a trippy version of "Whatever Lola Wants" from an ultra-mod TV production of "Damn Yankees." She's quite good, even if the approach is dated.

Good morning, all!

I will shortly head to Toyland to begin the loooong "Don't Ask Me Not To Sing, which was initially even longer. This was the Act Two showpiece for Bob Hope and the California Collegians. The number was dropped from The Cat And The Fiddle and revised to allow the seven Collegians to  impersonate Rudy Vallee, Helen Morgan, Arthur Tracy, Ruth Etting, Morton Downey, Ethel Merman, and Bing Crosby. It's a lot of fun, but it's endless! It includes these lyrics:
Melody soft and low, melody loud and strong
Melody sends this microphonic, diatonic world along.

Other lyrics for "microphonic diatonic" include:
Old melodic, idiotic
This burlesquey, old Mae West-key
Harvest mooning, Crosby crooning
Chansonetting, sweet Ruth Etting

So, that's most of my day. I'll check in from Toyland.

More coffee!

Sally Field:  SOAP DISH

I really want to see Lincoln.

Sally Field was on The View when the movie first came out.  She had mentioned that she had wanted the part many years ago when they were originally casting the film (was it 10 years?). I think she was cast.  Anyhow when they went to do the casting now they said she was too old (she is 11 years older than Daniel Day- Lewis).

But Daniel wanted to meet with her and for some reason he really wanted her to do it.

I kept going back to that picture and thinking the same thing, but I concluded that it just wouldn't be comfortable, or perhaps even possible, to lie back in, because of its narrow depth.  And if it were made deep enough to accommodate us, then the book storage depth would be ridiculous.  In the end, my taste doesn't run to storing books (any books) in such quirky fashion.  Have to agree, though, interesting design, and might work in the right place.  Just not my place.

Actually, even the way it's meant to be sat in doesn't look like something you'd do for more than a couple of minutes.

Watched those.  Definitely interesting, but dated, and a bit of a chore to get through.

Vintage TV versions of Broadway musicals is a category I'd love to catch up on, but were they all as quirkily adapted as this one?

Kate the Great, as Cole Porter wrote:

She made the butler
She made the groom
She made the maid who made the room.
She made the army
She made the marines
Made some of them princes
And some of the queens
And when she still was discontent,
Kate'd create a new regiment.
So, beautiful ladies, before it's too late
Follow the lead of this potentate
Give up arranging affairs of state
And stay in the hay like
Kate the Great.

I can't believe how fast these days are flying by.  What turned into "Oh, I have four weeks left" of school has turned into -"What??  The Christmas Program is next Thursday???" So, while we're not scrambling to get it done, we getting things done at a good pace.  It's a rather extensive production I've put together that I'm calling "Holidays Around the World", students and teachers alike are excited by the program, and I guess I am to.  I have to write (to use a bk term) the "contextual commentary" this weekend and get it to the appropriate students that speak well, and tomorrow we head to the church (where we present this thing) and work on our Olympic Style procession (countries of the world using the music from "It's a Small World" of course because I take ALL my inspiration from Disney) and if we can walk and sing at the same time, we're golden.

I'm up, I'm up, and guess what I woke up to?  A missive from the dealer who was offended I'd put out there what I did in today's notes.  I told him there was nothing to be offended by, that it's my little corner of the world, I don't name names, and that it wasn't really even about him, but about the gluttony of releases this time of year by any number of people, and how hard that make it for others when they have to postpone to release dates to not go near the madness.  THAT was the real point.  I like this fellow and his co-horts and frankly we would not be in business if it wasn't for their company and I've told them that any number of times - very few of us would be in business if it wasn't for their company.  The fact that some little twit felt it necessary to direct them to the notes - THAT'S what's offensive.   Happily, I have the e-mail address of the twit.

A. O. Scott has reviewed The Hobbit (http://movies.nytimes.com/2012/12/14/movies/the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-by-peter-jackson.html).  Here's the first paragraph:

Quote
In “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s first Middle-earth fantasy novel, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) sets out with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a posse of dwarfs to battle a fearsome dragon. [Spoiler alert] they do not kill the dragon, although [spoiler alert] they eventually will, within the next 18 months or so, because [spoiler alert] this “Hobbit,” which is [migraine alert] 170 minutes, is the first installment in [film critic suicide-watch alert] a trilogy.

and then later...

Quote
The comparative playfulness of the novel could have made this “Hobbit” movie a lot of fun, but over the years Mr. Jackson seems to have shed most of the exuberant, gleefully obnoxious whimsy that can be found in early films like “Meet the Feebles” and “Dead Alive.” A trace of his impish old spirit survives in some of the creature designs in “The Hobbit” — notably a gelatinous and gigantic Great Goblin and an encampment of cretinous, Three-Stooges-like trolls — but Tolkien’s inventive, episodic tale of a modest homebody on a dangerous journey has been turned into an overscale and plodding spectacle.

I still want to see it/them (the other two movies).

Keith took his car to Medford for an oil change & some other work.  When he was done he called from the road & I met him at Les Schwab.  We then left my car for new tires and will pick it up tomorrow.  Since I don't use my car all that often, & tend not to use it at all when the weather is bad, we didn't purchase top of the line tires for winter driving.  The still cost enough.

I made an appointment to have my snow tires put on Saturday morning.  They're essential, especially with my steep driveway.  What's amazing, though, is how long both the snow tires and my regular all season tires last, swapping them twice a year.  This will be the 6th or 7th winter for the snows, and the others have four years on them, and I've already been told they're still fine to put on next spring.

I'm fortunate in that I was able to move where I live now...it's only one mile from my work and it's completely flat.  I have never had snow tires, and except for a few minor incidents over the years, I've never really needed them.

From the stats department for season two - episode one is about to cross 12,000 views.  Episode two is about to cross 14,000 views, and episode three in a week and a half is about to cross 8,000 view.  Very happy with all this, needless to say.

And oh, just a note to the twit, should the twit be reading this board as the twit obviously reads the notes every single day:  Karma.  The End.  Do penance for your sins if you don't want that bad karma.  Apologize and then stop being a twit - it serves you worst of all and did not seem to cause the problems you wished.  In fact, it seems to have opened a good dialogue.  Oh, well.

Watched Hyde Park on Hudson - very enjoyable save for the absolutely wretched direction - he couldn't kill the good writing and performances but he surely didn't help them.  The film also contains what is now my favorite film score of 2012 by someone named Jeremy Sams, who I have to say I've never heard of.  Thankfully, the album was available on amazon as a download only thing.  I'm listening now and it's just as good away from the film as in it.  It's like the best of Richard Rodney Bennett.

We don't get those trees in the desert. There are some in the mountains.  In the desert most of our trees keep their tiny leaves. Around the creeks there are sycamores, ash, cottonwoods that change color. A few people have ash trees as yard trees.

The oaks do exceptionally well here and are a pain to keep up with.  We are glad to have reduced the ones close to the house, leaving only a beautiful black oak.

Good luck!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I remember my test being slightly nerve wracking. I think many people here used to fail on their try because the teachers were very strict.

For example they would make you parallel park. And you had to get it on the first shot. Sorry, But most adults I know cannot parallel park on the first shot.

I remember doing well on the test. But then I had to parallel park. And I did not get it on the first try (which would normally mean fail). But I asked the instructor if i could have one more try. And got it perfectly. So I passed!

The three Blu-rays are gorgeous, but, as I thought, I wasn't in the mood to watch any one of them straight through tonight.  Instead, I went back to Jacques Tati's TRAFIC which I had watched the first half of a few nights ago before falling dead asleep.  So, watched the second half just now and enjoyed it much more.  I must say that being awake is a pretty good way to enjoy a movie.  I hadn't seen this one before.  It's a bit less accessible, or focused, or something, than the three better known ones preceding it, but there are some great bits in it.  At one point I laughed and laughed like a perfect idiot, and then discovered that the bit wasn't quite finished and had to laugh like an idiot again.

Chocolate dinner was super. My favorite of the six courses was a simple salad that was so fresh and beautiful. I will post photos tomorrow, but I'll describe the salad: Mixed greens with radish, honeycrisp apple and almonds with a Chocolate-Orange Vanilla Dressing.

The real revelation of the evening was the many flavors of chocolate. I love ultra dark chocolate, 90%. I'll even eat unsweetened occasionally, which is super bitter, and cocoa nibs. But the various ways that chocolate was presented was wonderful. Also wonderful was duck breast in an achiote chocolate sauce with a sweet potato and apple latke and cabbage.
