Yesterday was strange here. When I left for work, it was below 32 with frost covering the ground. When I got home after dinner at 10:30 p.m., it was 64 degrees and balmy. It's 58 right now and is supposed to get up to 72 degrees.

TURNTABLE - if I have the evening I'm hoping to have, I'll be cleaning up and spinning a few shows and soundtracks that haven't been out of their jackets in a couple of decades.

DVD - Still enjoying a little Jacques Tati binge (with thanks to BK for inspiring this with a mention of Tati sometime recently).

BLU - Might head out to a Barnes & Noble to take advantage of their 40%-off sale (+ member 10% + coupons), so let's wait and see on that.

Good morning, all!

I have a free day since I am stuck here waiting for a FedEx package. So, I slept late, and I am now bathed and dressed and ready to deal with this holiday called Christmas.  I have a lot of packages to assemble and prepare for the post office today. I'd like to be able to hit the 68th Street Station first thing tomorrow morning and post them as quickly as possible.

Once FedEx shows up, I'll begin the laundry. I believe that's all I'm dealing with today. That's enough.

BK, thanks for the good report on HYDE PARK ON HUDSON, which I hadn't been too keen on seeing. Now I want to. I really liked the director's film of Jane Austen's PERSUASION, which is her most moving and perhaps biographical novel. Jeremy Sams is a multi-talented man: a very good translator of operetta, opera and plays, including THREEPENNY OPERA. I believe his career began as a pianist on the London productionof SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM and I think he was married to Maria Friedman. I knew that he assembled the Metropolitan Opera's baroque pastiche last year, THE ENCHANTED ISLAND, but I didn't know he was writing film scores. I am not surprised.

TOD:
DVD: too many are piling up
CS: a lot of Christmas music; I wish Guy Haines would do one.
VCR: shocking!

Friday morning greetings!  My book group friends weren't too hard on me over Catherine the Great.  They even agreed that they were glad to have read it and wouldn't have picked up on their own.  I think the general consensus was that Robert Massie is no David McCullough.  Emilie's husband made us a faboo apple struedel, which we had with cookies from Collette's bakery in Monroe and our choice of tea or wine (or both).

Another Los Angeles landmark, though not of the highest order, is changing in ways that are not necessarily for the better. The King Eddy Saloon, which attracted everyone from Bukowski to James M. Cain, is getting a makeover:

TOD:

Car CD player:

Sammy Kaye - White Christmas

The Caroleers - Santa is Coming to Town

The Swingalongs - Sing-a Song of Christmas

and some other vintage 50s Christmas stuff imported from old LPs via the internet

DVD:

Finished watching the 1974 Bollywood version of the 1955 film THE DESPERATE HOURS titled 36 GHANTE (36 HOURS). It was quite good and it followed that old movie quite closely.

Hope this weekend to get to the other two films from the 1960s Shochiku horror/sci fi set watched, GENOCIDE and GOKE, BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL.

Of course, if I get hooked on more season 6 Perry Mason, then I probably won't get anything else watched.

DVR:

Have no idea what I recorded this week, but likely episodes SURVIVOR, CHICAGO FIRE, THE OFFICE, and MODERN FAMILY. Maybe something from TCM. I know I set the DVR to record some movies from TCM, but don't recall when they were showing or even what they were.

Do you have to have a different set of tires in the winter that you switch out the rest of the year?  You would know if they were studded tires because those are very loud.

The news just backtracked: 20 year-old Adam Lanza was the shooter. 24 year-old Ryan Lanza is in custody.

No less than four Fed Ex trucks have stopped either in front of or near my house - I thought more screeners, but not one of those delivery people came to my door.  Odd.

With the increase of school shootings it is scary having a son working in an elementary school.  I hope Bryan never has to work an emergency room after something like this.

I just downloaded two books from the library off of my wish list.  It has been awhile since anything has been available.  This probably means a couple of books on my hold list, that have been close to available for ages, will finally open up.

And now for something completely different...

So, last week, I saw Capital Playhouse's Nuncrackers.  I liked it but a reviewer HATED (http://www.weeklyvolcano.com/entertainment/stage/2012/11/review-nuncrackers-capital-playhouse-olympia/) it.  But the point of my post is his last paragraph...and I think BK, especially, will appreciate this:

Quote
One last thing: I know local audiences, Capital Playhouse's in particular, are undemanding. But please, for the love of all that's decent and true, can we please come back to our senses about standing ovations in Olympia? They don't mean, "My kid is in this show." They mean you saw exceptional work deserving more than the usual minute of clapping. It's the equivalent of "A+," not, as my wife said, "O for effort." That's an old joke, too, but it's funnier than anything in Nuncrackers.

:D

We live in a society where people can post on theater chat sites grisly things about people being "found dead in their Manhattan Apartment" - and it causes no concern at all to NYC authorities that the anonymous poster might be someone troubled or dangerous and treat it as "free speech."

Or where someone can post photos of someone's name on gravestones, and it doesn't seem to the authorities that this is a deranged person worth looking at.

FedEx delivered the package at 6:00 and I have spent the last four hours in computer hell. I upgraded my Mac from OS10.5 to OS10.6.8, and then I lost my internet connection. It took several hours of plugging and unplugging the modem, rebooting the computer, playing with all cable connections and dealing with Apple support before things sorted out about 30 minutes ago. Then I had to update my software, and I am back.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for cillaliz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The worst part of today's news coverage was the footage that CBS Evening News showed of parents breaking down as they learned their child was dead. It was beyond heartbreaking, it was pure unadulterated raw pain and no one should be shown in that condition to the viewing public.
