Good morning, all!
I have nothing much to report. I've got a busy morning at Toyland, and I'm hoping that I will find in today's mail a couple of checks I've been waiting on.
I'm happy to see DR FJL's report on Sandy's show. I'm happy it went well. Last night I attended a small party at my neighbor Alice's apartment. I don't know if she invited the whole building or only the long-time residents, but it was a pleasant gathering. Lots of apartment gossip, which was fun.

Just wanted to alert everyone to the new Broadway Radio Show that is now up for your listening pleasure here on HainesHisWay. This edition is my phone interview with songwriter Charles Bloom and features selections from his new CD entitled "In Here" with performances by talented Broadway performers such as Christine Ebersole, Howard McGillin, Liz Larsen, Josh Grisetti, Aaron Lazar, Vicki Lewis, Jill Paice and more! And just a bit of fun trivia, Charles is the son of screenwriter Harold Jack Bloom (The Naked Spur and You Only Live Twice) and actress Carolyn Kearney (The Thing That Couldn't Die and Hot Rod Girl)....Charles, himself, was an actor and appeared in the long forgotten NBC sitcom The Waverly Wonders starring Joe Namath!

Tuesday morning greetings! Today is Baking and Wrapping Day for me. Richard was supposed to visit the doctor who did his foot surgery, but she is ill today and they will have to reschedule his appointment.
-
As for last night's frivolity over my "studying for England," I walked right into it, didn't I?
No, dear DRs John G and TCB, I am not studying the language! The Nashotah House professors who are mentoring us on this tour have sent some fairly scholarly readings on church history. As an auditor, I don't feel compelled to read quite so heavily but I'm at least scanning some of their recommendations. One of my book group friends gave me her copy of Sarah Vowell's The Wordy Shipmates, which is about the Puritans. And I'm about to add the first 2 installments of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy onto my Kindle for airplane reading.
Then there's Rick Steves and the Eyewitness travel guides...

Chrome is fixed. Hooray!

In a bit I am going to do my last shopping for Christmas. My sister Molly and her husband finally got to move into the house that my brother Dane owns....but of course there are NO appliances.....the former tenants took everything.....even though everything was there when they moved in. Said tenant told my brother that they bought ALL NEW appliances in the five years that they lived there, and so they took them.
Said tenants have disappeared......owing a $350 sewer bill and electric and gas bills as well..... My brother had to pay the sewer assessment, but the utility companies will have to find the tenants. Good luck.
SO ANYWAY......my sister and I are going shopping today to get stove/refrigerator/washer and dryer for Molly..... This will use up the rest of my savings from 2012....but that's all right....it's the end of the year anyway....and I wasn't saving it for anything in particular anyway.

Happiest of birthdays to DR Dan (the Man)!

I'm also a little envious of that sandwich/panini grill. I haven't the slightest idea why I've never bought one. Actually, I think I had some very early version of one some years back and eventually let it go. Can't imagine doing that now. But I so love that kind of sandwich eatin' that I'd surely put on an immediate hundred pounds if I had one in the house.

Um if they bought all new appliances then what did they do with the old ones? That is ridiculous. Your brother should go after them too.

Glad you got some good vibrations from that Theremin, ChasSmith. Did you ever see the documentary on him? It was a real trip.
You mean the one on Theremin and Clara Rockmore? It's an essential piece o' my library.
I got so fired up about them I bought the kit and assembled my own Moog Etherwave (is that the name of it?) a decade or so back. Unfortunately, I have to shamefacedly say I've never done much in the way of learning to play it. I also believe I must have crossed wires somewhere because one or two of the controls work in reverse -- and I really don't have a good place to set it up that's free from all manner of metal and electrical interference. Maybe someday I'll get back to that....

You could always play it along to "Pet Sounds." At least until you were ready to give concerts.

Keith is outside shoveling snow. We knew there was snow this morning because at 6:15 the school district woke us up with an automated call telling us the schools were closed. Then they called & woke me up again at 7:15 >:(
It wouldn't have been so bad except I woke up at 2:00 and didn't fall asleep until 6:00.
I called back the number & just got the same recording they called us with. I'll try again later & hope I reach them before the next snow day.

Mike, the higher frame rate is only being shown for the 3D version and only certain venues.

Episode two has just passed 15,000 views, the first episode to do so. Episode three just crossed 11,000 views in eight days, and episode one is heading towards 13,000. Pretty decent numbers.

My sister in law is in surgery right now. It was a planned knee surgery. I think she's getting a new knee, but I don't remember the details. My parents were going to drive to Sioux Falls to be there with her and my brother. I was very worried this morning because they had snow and ice up there. Luckily, after they started out, they turned back and went home. My niece was going to make the trip (about 1 1/2 hours). It took her over 20 minutes to go just a couple miles and she had the baby with her, so she turned back too. I feel better knowing they are safe
-
Thanks John G.

Surgery vibes for DR Cillaliz's sister-in-law! I'm glad the relatives didn't risk the driving.

Great dog photo, Jane.
Thanks for the link to the Kander interview, Ben. Funny, but somehow he seems to be coming more into his own after Ebb's death. Either that or he was just comfortable letting Fred do most of the talking before.

Wise decisions to return home. I'm glad they are safe. Did your sister in-law get to the hospital easily enough? When I had surgery I told Keith to go to the gym, no point in sitting around waiting.

DR CILLA, VIBES THE SURGERY & RECOVERY GO WELL!!!!
-
Oh man, chocolate covered strawberries. Ours is the cocktail pack a full dozen. I shared with the office next door and we've each had one. There are cake pops too. A lot of sweets for a two person office!
-
THanks Jane. Just talked to my brother. He said he got a page that the surgeon is done and they are sewing or stapling or whateve they do. He was expecting the surgeon to talk to him any time.
-
A page is nice, cuts down on the waiting time to know when the surgery is done. Keith could have used one when my shoulder surgery took an extra hour. I had warned him & he still got scared.
-
Will she need the other knee done later or "just" the one?
-
She'll need the other knee too. She wanted to do both at once, but they wouldn't do it
-
People who have done both at once were happy to get it over with, but I understand the reasoning behind one at a time. I think it helps to have one functioning knee for balance.
So close to Christmas, I think she wanted to avoid cooking dinner ;)
-
And I am home from Toyland! Not a bad morning there at all.

He does seem to be much more available and willing to discuss but based on a comment in the interview about not being, I don't remember if this was the exact word but it's the essence, ambitious enough I think he probably didn't mind Ebb doing all the talking.

Just sent Richard to the little grocery down the street, because I'm baking cinnamon pecan coffee cakes and was willing to take a chance on the baking powder that expired a year ago but not on the baking soda that expired in 2007 :o

Um if they bought all new appliances then what did they do with the old ones? That is ridiculous. Your brother should go after them too....
Exactly! There were appliances in the apartment when the people arrived...there should appliances when they leave! >:(
Since the tenants disappeared I'm guessing not much can be done to retrieve the lost appliances or money. :(
-
This is true DR JANE. They were renting to buy.....but the husband passed away in July and they were having some difficulties....
I ended up spending only $1600 for all of the appliances I wanted.....the washer and dryer were "scratch and dent" and are really nice high end machines - and they will be delivered on Thursday...and set up for us.
My sister thinks she is just getting a washer and dryer and does not know she is also getting a refrigerator and range....so it will be fun to watch her when they are delivered!
-
Just sent Richard to the little grocery down the street, because I'm baking cinnamon pecan coffee cakes and was willing to take a chance on the baking powder that expired a year ago but not on the baking soda that expired in 2007 :o
He said he thought he'd splurge and buy both...
I think this is a good plan.

Thinking they would buy the house explains the appliances. It is obviously a sad situation all around.
Good job on the appliances & the extra surprise gift from you. You are a very generous brother.

Some of the spices, I was trying really hard to recall which place I lived in when I purchased them...
-
And I've lived in this house for 18 years...
-
I've been dealing with calls between my insurance company the doctor's office for the pre-approval on the injection I should have taken last month. It has been denied :(
-
And I've lived in this house for 18 years...
That doesn't mean anything. I've moved expired spices from one house to the next.

Okay, but one of the places I was thinking back to was 1985...

I have spices that are probably older than I am that I took from my mother's cabinet. Taste them. If they have flavor, they aren't expired.
-
I just checked this, and it still smells like, uh, nutmeg:
A jar of whole nutmeg (there are only four left in it), captured in 1972 from a friend-of-a-friend's apartment, kept only for silly sentimental reasons. (The plan is still to someday present them with it just for fun.)
-
Back from a Cobb Salad. Then had to do a minor correction on one of the packages, and then it looks like that one will be approved. And then we just need the other two and all will be well.
-
According to a poster on this DGA Yahoo newsgroup I somehow belong to, they got a very interesting screener yesterday via Fed Ex - no one else had, so I'm hoping it will show up today.

I think I have some of those, too.
When Richard and I combined households when we got married, there were 4 cans of chili powder between us.

We should all have gotten together and made something yummilicious with our >20-year-old foodstuffs!

Alas, my wonderful day of relaxing and ketchuping is nearing its end. Time to start getting ready for another busy evening. I wanted to answer the TOD, so will try to do that tonight when I'm back.

Ginny should leave the expired baking powder and baking soda behind, however.

There is every possibility that the baking soda was from my mother-in-law's kitchen, which we emptied when she died in 2007...

Seven!

Okay, I'm outta here till late tonight. I'm taking DR Elmore's CDs to listen to on the road.
-
Speaking of CDs, I ordered me some of those Kritzerland beauties.
-
People who have done both at once were happy to get it over with, but I understand the reasoning behind one at a time. I think it helps to have one functioning knee for balance.
So close to Christmas, I think she wanted to avoid cooking dinner ;)
With my brother's bypass and my niece's baby, they were well over their deductible. It was an insurance thing

Not sure why I'm still sitting at my desk. I haven't heard any news yet, so I'm just waiting for the phone to ring. I have never been any good at waiting for the phone to ring. That is why I am single and live with cats
-
Worse yet, they are going to call my cell phone. So I could be at home, but I just sit here and wait

I can't find my hardcopy of Les Miserables. I'm looking to compare it to my eBook which just doesn't seem right.
In order:
Preface
Fantine (title)
Book First-A Just Man (title)
Chapter 1-M. Myriel
It has been a LONG time since I've read this, but doesn't the book begin with Jean Valjean and not with the Bishop?

When the musical first opened in London and I got the London cast recording (before an American production happened), I got a couple of translated versions, one was 300-some-odd pages and the other was about 1500 pages. Do you still have your various copies?

Do you still have your various copies?
It's possible, but then, I might not. I still have some books in my garage and only a few in my house. It would be easier to just search and buy a version that I like than to try and find out which box that specific book is in.
-
Just wanted to alert everyone to the new Broadway Radio Show that is now up for your listening pleasure here on HainesHisWay.
I once dated The Thing That Couldn't Die.
Guess what? It died.

Chrome is fixed. Hooray!
So is AMERICAN IDOL!

Maybe I can find my copy. We seem to have books missing & I don't know why. I cleaned out a good number of books, but only those I didn't like. This one just might be too high for me to see the title.

Happy Birthday to DR Dan(theMan)!

We went up to the senior center for tonight's special Christmas dinner - ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, baked apples, cranberry relish, rolls, and dessert - all for $8/person. Dessert was 2 apple dumplings - each - so we came home with 3 of them in a box. When we left there we took a drive to see Christmas lights and now I'm going downstairs to spend some time at the package-wrapping table.
-
Surgery vibes for DR Cillaliz's sister-in-law! I'm glad the relatives didn't risk the driving.
Me too! Good luck to your sister-in-law!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks everyone. I'm excited and very glad that I'll know on Friday. Edith is nervous but excited too. She has been looking at opportunities should I get the job and has already found several that look good to her. She told me that she's learned something from everyone she's worked for and what she learned from me was not to be afraid to take a chance like I did when I left a really good job when I wasn't happy because things can turn out very well. She said she could sit at home and be miserable about it or she can look at it as an opportunity to do even better.
-
Her attitude is really cool. I have a very good feeling that this is going to be a positive thing for both of us

Christmas in South Carolina, Part 4:
All quiet on the eastern front today. My aunt picked us up at 9 a.m. and we went to Aiken SC to shop til we dropped. At this point in their lives, my mom and aunt drop sooner than I do, but I wasn't really shopping, per se, so I just walked through the stores and looked and looked. We went to Home Depot, WalMart (where I stumbled across, and bought, "Diamonds Are Forever" on Blu-ray disc -- a WalMart exclusive), Walgreens, Prestige Appliances and Belk. Then we went to Red Lobster for lunch (and I have to voice major disappointment at the puny shrimp served in their luncheon special. A dozen shrimp, each about the size of a cocktail shrimp, and most of it breading. I know better now, of course).
After that, we made one more stop at Leverett's Shoes and then we came home. I took a nap, after which my aunt came over and we played three hands of SkipBo. Yesterday afternoon, I won 4 hands and my mom won two. Today, we all won a hand. More SkipBo tomorrow afternoon with a four person joining the fun.
Tonight, I'm going to watch NCIS. It may be my Cousin Debra and her daughter, Becky (newly engaged), will stop by as they're going to be at my aunt's after supper.
Happy Vibes to all who need them this holiday season. Keep your mistletoe fresh and your breaths redolent of peppermint!

Thank you.
If this is the version you recommend, http://books.google.com/books?id=pPF0GH_8BgYC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false, it also begins with the Bishop & at a quick glance seems to be similar in the translation. Maybe my memory is just off. I can't get this one in eBook :(
The eBook version I have was translated by Isabel F. Hapgood & published by Thomas Y Crowell & Sons. It is over 1200 pages, about the length of the first version I read, and what I believed to be an unabridged edition. In high school, just about half a year after I read Les Miz our class read the, very much, abridged addition that stated it was abridged. I find it interesting there is nothing in the book I'm reading that states it is at all abridged.

DR Jane that is crazy that they would call the whole town to tell them about the school closing. You'd think they would just call the teachers and students.
LOL, I hope they didn't call the entire town. We think we were accidentally added to the calling list, either my the wrong number punched in or off the "emergency" number Craig gave last year when he worked in the elementary school here. I should be able to reach someone tomorrow to correct this. It's just a shame it happened on a morning when I needed sleep to feel better.

That's the one!

I'll have to decide to continue with the edition I'm reading or wait for the unabridge to become an eBook.

Interesting. Thank you. Do you have any idea if you read her translation? I wish I knew if I have.

Speaking of books, I just saw this on FB

Here's "One Day More" from "Les Miz." I just wish I knew when it opened. Can anyone help me?

I was very disappointed when I saw this on stage. I'm will be very curious to the reactions here, and as DR Jennifer mentioned, the reactions compared to having seen it live or not.
Does Russel Crowe sing?

He sings in that clip...and he's had a rock band for years, if I remember correctly.

Found out why the big package hasn't arrived - the guy who was sending is from Canada and uses a guy in NY to ship his stuff. And this guy took it upon himself to ship this big package media mail rather than the service I'd paid for - express or Priority. So, heaven knows when it will get here. The guy who made the decision seems to think it will be here by the weekend, but that has not been my experience with media mail ever. It's the cheapest way to ship and therefore the USPS cares about it even less than the packages they already don't care about - bottom of the heap always, and especially at this time of year. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't arrive until after the first of the New Year - I hope he's right and it does arrive by Saturday - the only reason to hope is because it is insured and it does have delivery confirmation. The seller feels terrible and is offering me several things to make up for it. I just want the damn package, which should have been here yesterday had his person shipped the way he was supposed to.
-
Cabinet thing has not arrived - seems like they'll be here at the very end of the window rather than the beginning and they really should call if that's going to be the case, because there's another small package waiting for me that I now won't be able to get. No Fed Ex with screener today and I'm going to be mighty upset if I read on that DGA newsgroup that everyone else got theirs.

He could have been dubbed which is why I asked. I didn't get that far either, figure I would wait to see it without the subtitles :)

But the best part of the afternoon was reconnecting with someone I haven't talked to in literally twenty-nine years. She was in the ensemble in that Likely Stories episode I directed, the musical of The Elephant Man and I remember we hung out together for a bit back then - just friends. Went to movies and dinner, but I was embroiled in that wacko relationship with the actress that I talk about in my first memoir and that was so tumultuous that I kind of blew off all my friends back then. I remembered this gal when I had that episode of Likely Stories transferred to DVD and a mutual friend had a friend who's stayed in touch and so today I got the number and we had a splendidly splendid and fun chat for over an hour. Amusingly, she recognized my voice immediately. Isn't that funny? I invited her to the Christmas Eve Do, but if she can't swing that, we'll have dinner next week.

At least the seller is trying to do something to make up for the mistake, not that it helps you much but better than if he acted like a jerk.

Everything that I've read says that everyone did their own singing...no one was dubbed and it was all recorded live.

In her short bit, Helena Bonham Carter sounds much better than she did in "Sweeney." I thought she made a good Mrs. Lovett in that on every level but musical.
I did not like the editing, though. Or the hand-held camera work. Or the overly limited color palate.

Delivery will be here ten minutes before the end of the window - which means I've sat here for three hours and forty minutes for no reason.

I didn't realize this would mean closing your office & not having Edith working for you anymore-WOW!
I'm sure with the glowing recommendation you would give Edith she would get any job she applied to.
I gathered it would mean closing the office, but not that Edith couldn't go along. Hope it all works out for both of you.

Second watching of "The Bishop's Wife." Love Jerome Moross' orchestrations and the use of music throughout.

Unless the package is critical, I also think that the seller is trying to be as nice as can be about it. And I'm sure even with media mail that it will arrive soon.

I saw the most heartbreaking thing posted on facebook today. It was a class picture from Newtown CT. And every single child but one little girl in that class was killed. IT said the little girl pretended to be dead. I can't even imagine how hard things will be for her. :(
-
Called Fed Ex to see if they had info on the screener and they did - scheduled for tomorrow at some point, and so tomorrow I'll have Les Miz.
-
What package IS critical? That's not the point. It's not the seller's fault, it's his shipper who behaved like an idiot. The seller is a stand-up guy and he's furious at his shipper.

no
-
The house is filled with the aroma of cinnamon, almond and vanilla. Just made a coffee cake for an office breakfast tomorrow. Now I want to eat it.

Yum

Cabinet thing has been delivered and looks great. I was able to get all the CDs off the floor of the CD closet so I can actually go in there now. I'm not sure I like how the big Grundig looks on top of it, so I'll live with it and if I don't like I'll move the radio outside and put other stuff on top of it.

Happiest of Birthdays to PennyO!!!

Happiest of Birthdays to Dan (the Man)!!!

And do I see correctly that only one person answered the TOD? Shirley, I missed a few somewhere.

Okay, one more.

ELEVEN!

~~~Vibes for Cillaliz's Sister-in-Law!!~~~
Ditto!
TOD
I am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy - were the Hobbit screener to show up in my mailbox I would be a very happy girl indeed
-
I can't think of any other fantasy movies at the moment but I am sure there are many--- just very tired
-
Oh dear I forgot Cilla's SIL!! VIBES for a speedy recovery!!
-
;D
-
Vibes for everyone who needs them. ;)
-
Love the doggie pictures. Better than dressing up kids. More fun because pets do not complain. 8)
-
TOD - not a fantasy fan. I have seen the LotR trilogy only because I'm married to one fan and the mother of another. Several years ago I even took them to Indianapolis to see a museum exhibit on MY birthday. Right now, in the car, Richard is listening to ARTEMIS FOWL and I go to my happy place when it's on.
-
Wrapped many presents tonight - just have stocking stuffers left to wrap. I'm a tired elf - 'night!
-
Eleven pages! That's my kind of posting day. I decided against the radio on the cabinet thing - but what worked perfectly were some oversized art books I had stacked up - I put about twelve of them there bookended by very cool Adohr Farms brass bookends. It looks great.
-
Watched the first hour on an Ayn Rand documentary - this was Oscar-nominated, but while the subject and ideas are more than fascinating and I'm enjoying that part thoroughly, the actual putting together of it is extremely amateurish.
-
But what a fascinating woman she was.
Today at work, the lights blinked but they didn't go out. It snowed yesterday and last night, but it doesn't look like it's going to snow in the foreseeable future...well, maybe a bit on Friday, but that's it.
