It's fascinating to me - 90% of our GUESTS have disappeared this Christmas.  And you know what - I don't mind at all.

Deb, Anthony made just one cracker for the small guy. We got the others at Tea and Sympathy in the Village. You can get crackers at Bed Bath and Beyond also. You can order make your own crackers from the Internet.

Good morning, all, and Happy Boxing Day!

Temperatures dropped about 45 degrees yesterday from the upper 70s to just below freezing. And a nasty wind out there. I could feel the car moving in it.

I have to return to work this morning. I have a feeling it will be as empty as it was Monday, only we won't be released from work early.

Good morning, all.

Do we really have to box today?  I'd far prefer to recover from the last couple of days, get a little cleaning done, and watch a movie or two.

Oh wait.  I can!!    :)

I usually get high end crackers right after Christmas and put them away for next year - Tom's usually has a nice cracker with nice quality gifts.  Costco and BJ's occassionally have them as well.  I was intriged when you were describing the one Ant made for the li'l one and knowing how artistic he is withthe doll houses I wondered if he actually handcrafted all the crackers-

Had a very nice Christmas evening "do" at my aunt's house across the street last night.  This morning, I am taking down the tree...it's half done.  I have to reorganize the ornament box or everything will be crushed next year.

Today will be packing (vice boxing) day here.  I need to get things organized and ready to go tomorrow morning.  My flight leaves Columbia SC at 10:45 a.m. and will arrive in Atlanta by 11:45 a.m.  My flight out of Atlanta departs at 2:45 p.m.  Will arrive at SFO at 5:15 p.m. (remember the three-hour time difference).

Happily, I don't go back to work until January 7, 2013, so I'll have more than a week to recuperate and reestablish my old habits!!!

My sister took my parents to see it yesterday with my nephew. Apparently, all of them loved it.

I plan to spend today chillaxing for the first time in weeks.  Unless I decide to brave the awful weather that's supposed to come today (wintery mix and winds) and head out to the malls to pick up calendars and discounted Hallmark ornaments, that is.  But it's terribly nice that, aside fom a few minor clean-ups left over from yesterday, I have nothing that I *have* to do.

Ahhhhhhhhh...

Help we are snowed in here - and it is still snowing.  I will take pictures....everyone is being encouraged to STAY HOME and not drive.

State Offices of course are OPEN, so that employees will have to use a Personal or Sick Day to keep themselves out of danger.  I had many conversations with the Personnel Dept - telling them that if one drives when one's county is under Emergency Conditions - one's insurance is invalid....their reply:  "We'll pay the ticket....."

I watched three of six episodes of season one of THE HOUR last night....most enjoyable....and I shall watch the rest some time today or this evening.

I shall also watch my "snow" movie.....the movie I always watch on the day of the FIRST heavy snowfall of the year:

WHERE EAGLES DARE with Mr Richard Burton and Mr Clint Eastwood.....now on BLU RAY.

We had a lovely dinner and a lovely meal - perfect pork and gratin, great dessert (had an extra portion) -  with Bill, Maureen, also our dear friend Joe whom I hadn't seen in a couple of months was here for a several hours before he had to get back to work (he's the fellow who wrote the screen comedy FRIENDS AND FAMILY, which I think some here on HHW have seen, but he sort-of chucked show-biz to go back to medicine)  et al.  We had some Irish carols and I of course forced some of my current faves Michael Buble and Rod Stewart and Thalia background music and even a little Steve and Eydie "Hallelujah" into the background soundtrack.

The Steve and Eydie "Hellelujah" song has become a holiday favorite for me for some reason, almost any giving-thanks holiday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnwwO4nBiXo

Good morning, all! One holiday down and one to go! I am happy to see yesterday go. It was profitable in that I worked and made some money, but holidays are no longer special events in my life, more like obstacle courses to be navigated with Machiavellian cunnng, and unfortuantely my Machiavellian cunning is not what it once was. I did get some lovely cards and gifts from dear friends outside the City, and I got some beautiful emails from friends I haven't seen since 1970. That was the good side of the day.

It was nice to hear from DRs Dan(theMan) and Jose.

I slept late; the internet at Toyland is down so I brought work home yesterday, I have no idea when my colleague Curtis will attend to it, I have no ideawhere things stand on ROBERTA, and my lfe continues at its current frustrating pace. I must make a trek today to the post office and to the bank. And then I proofread.

I do want to see LES MIZ, perhaps this weekend. Having read the complete unabridged novel, I disagree strongly with DR Druxy's comment that that story is all about the Javert-Valjean chase; LES MIZ is not THE FUGITIVE. It's a history of a generation of the French population (the wretched ones) following the fall of Napoleon and the political unrest, centered around Valjean's story. One of my biggest problems with the musical is that there is no explanation for the 10-12 years between Valjean's taking custody of Cosette as a child and their life in Paris when she's fallen in love with Marius. The scenery changes and so does Cosette. One of the things missing in the stage version as well is the fact that the obnoxious kid Gavroche is Fantine's brother and Thenardier's son, sothe Thenardier's pop up in the musical often out of nowhere and coincidence rather than from Victor Hugo's plotting.

More coffee.

I'll take the prosciutto, Matthew.

The only way to really eat that meat is if it is sliced so thin you can read the newspaper through it. Otherwise, your right, too salty and too chewy.

On Christmas Eve, the hostess of the party I went made Duck Wellington in which she seared the duck breasts, then rolled them in ground mushrooms, before she wrapped each one in prosciutto. Then it went in the puff pastry. It was the four course and way too much food, so I'm having mine as leftovers tonight.

When you've been on a reduced sodium diet like mine for 2.5 years, even ham tastes too salty.  And don't even get me started on restaurant food!

A movie and/or a stage play cannot be a novel.  Neither one has enough "real estate".

To make a credible dramatization of a novel like LES MISERABLES, you have to boil the story down to its "spine" or essence.  And, storywise, the essence of LES MISERABLES is the chase.  That's what moves the narrative forward.

Everything else (i.e. the social conditions, the revolution) is background or subplot (the romance), just like the Civil War is background to Scarlett's story in GONE WITH THE WIND

If you want to dramatize the complete novel of LES MISERABLES, then it has to be done as a 10-12 hour mini-series.  (Perhaps it has been done.  I don't know)

I think the BBC should do 5-10 part adaptations of the two epic French novels of the 19th century: LES MISERABLES and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. How many parts are there to their WAR ANDPEACE with Anthony Hopkins? 12?

The chase makes better drama.

Actually, if you shift some of the events around (i.e. make Javert's suicide closer to the end), then you could probably have both.

Besides, by the time Javert kills himself, Valjean has pretty much redeemed himself.  He just hasn't told Cossette about it.  Storywise, does he really need to?

Gavroche is Fantine's brother?
Eponine's brother.

From Wikipedia: Gavroche is the eldest son of M. and Mme Thénardier. He has two sisters, Éponine and Azelma, and two unnamed younger brothers. He is also technically unnamed; the reader is told he chooses the name for himself, but is not provided with his real name. Mme. Thénardier only loves her daughters, and M. Thénardier shows no affection for any of his children. Gavroche is told by his parents to live in the street, because he would have a better life there.

My friend, Bonnie, loves getting books for Christmas, but only if somebody gets murdered in them. In other words, mysteries and mysteries only. She reads dozens of them a year. So, she was particularly incensed when a friend gave her "Laura Lamont's Life in Pictures," a book about a woman who becomes an actress in Hollywood. The gift was from someone with a doctorate in philosophy and seems to have been picked up off a new book table without the slightest thought about the recipient.

Anyway, her reaction made us want to pick up the book and see what it was really like. Well, it came under a great deal of fire as the prose was decidedly underpar. We all took turns opening to random pages and within three or four sentences, we discovered that the author had penned something laughable. The first was on page one and went something like: Cherry County, so named because of the cherries that grew in the county.

Then the title character's son, Junior, was found "scampering" up to his mother and wrapping his legs "against" her waist.

Perhaps the best was an entire paragraph of how our heroine had been forced to sleep in a closet without a door. There was a curtain to provide a little privacy, but it picked up all the smells of the awful mystery meat being cooked in the nearby kitchen. Such hardship made her long for the day when she could have a door of her own, one "made of real wood."

Of course, as I look on the Internet, the book is getting fairly decent reviews.

Curiosity got the better of me so I checked it out on Goodreads, lots of 1 & 2 stars for this as well as 4 or 5.  The range is very wide but at mostly 3 stars I wouldn't read it unless the topic appealed to me.

Gavroche is Fantine's brother?

Yep! and they are Thenardier's children.

Yu are correct! I screwed that up. Eponine is the daughter the Thenardier's prefer over their lofger Cosette.

I had a hard enough time remembering Gavroche's name.

I think he meant "Eponine." Gavroche is a Thenardier.

I did. But gavroche is not an older brother of Eponine; he's a younger brother. He's just a kid when he dies on the barricades.

My memory of the stage musical is that we never know Gavroche is Eponine's brother. And the Thenardier's do not show up at the wedding in the novel.

Yesterday, it snowed in the Olympia/Tumwater area!  Snow on Christmas!  But it didn't last long, at all.  It was already melting by the time I left my house at arount 1:00 pm.

Loved reading the various responses to "Les Miz." May try to see it this weekend, if possible.

My sister took my parents to see it yesterday with my nephew. Apparently, all of them loved it.

I have to say (well, I don't really have to, but I'm going to)...I thought that Russell Crowe was the acting and singing weak link of the show.  He was just two-dimentional in his acting and didn't really "emote" with his singing.  He wasn't as intense or driven as you would expect Javert to be.

Just my additional 2¢.

I bought the "Les Misérables" highlights soundtrack MP3 downloads from Amazon.  Someone posted here that it was only $5.  Well, it's still only $5 from Amazon but iTunes has the exact same tracks for $15.99!  Since it seems that a complete recording isn't going to be released, I would at least rather have what is available (even without an electronic booklet :P) and when the DVD is released, I'll probably make my own complete recording.

Well, one thing that I do have to do is go out and fill my bird feeder.  I've gotten in the habit the past few weeks of keeping it filled with seed.  It doesn't attract anything more exotic that thongs of sparrows (and an odd cardinal or two which the sparrows tolerate--they've driven off the bluejays that attempted to take over the joint).  These hungry birds are going through a 40 lb bag of seed a week, but I enjoy watching them.

:)

Throngs--not thongs...

I probably need to upgrade to a better brand of seed.  Right now I'm using Pennington wild bird seed from Home Depot.

Just saw something most amusing on the Film Score Monthly message board.  The label that likes to make pre-pre-pre announcements has just done their first pre-pre-pre announcement for 2013, basically telling everyone that they've got a humungous release schedule for 2013 that will not abate, glut be damned.  But here's the amusing part - the thread title - Farewell 2012 - Hello 2013 complete with exclamation point.  Why is that amusing?  Well, for any of our usual denizens around these here parts, you'll know that exact phrase with the exception of the changing years, is always how I title the New Year's Eve notes.  Every year.  Do I think this is coincidence?  No.  Is it?  No.  Does it tell me something interesting?  Oh, yes, it tells me something interesting all right.

I've been trying to find out something about the scarf Bryan sent me.  It is from the Ohio Knitting Mills but they don't have anything on their website.

Bryan is sweet to send gifts but I'm always telling him to leave the pretty wrapped packages empty as it is the pretty package I like the best.

I don't know what the yarn is on the scarf but I seem to be somewhat allergic too it, plus it is so long it goes all the way down to my knees.  It would look very pretty on a long black coat I have except, to my horror, it began to shed all over the coat.

I've got to figure out some way to wear this.

Watching a fascinating indie called "George Washington." Had heard about it, but I knew nothing about the picture. Really good.

We've got at least 3 inches of snow, with every other kind of wet, cold, icy precipitation coming down on top of it.

Time for me to leave work.  I'm going to Costco to see if there's anything that I want to get with my gift card. :D

I may save it and just use it for gas, though.  We'll see.

Until later.

I suppose that it would've helped if I would've brought my gift card to Costco. ::) Oh, well...I didn't find anything that I wanted to get, anyway.  I'll just bring it with me next time.

The good news is I had a great talk with Sharon my REAL cat sitter today. She's in a rehab facility in town and got to go home for the first time in three months on Christmas day.  He dog went nuts!   I will be visiting her sometime in the next few days.

The bad news is Paul's mom died this afternoon.  She's been in the hospital and I had a feeling this was coming  He wouldn't talk about her and asked me not to ask.  We had lunch today and a couple hours later he let me know she died and that they knew it was coming.  She was in her 90s and had pneumonia.   I'm glad I was here to have lunch with him today.  He said it was just what he needed at the time.

We are going to have snow tomorrow and the next day.  I think I'm going to go to see Les Miz one day and visit Sharon on the other.  I will adjust everything according to whatever I can do for Paul.  His sister and her family all live here and he has tons of friends, several other very close friends.  He's going to call me in the morning

If I am going to read the complete Les Miserables, what should I get.  There was a discussion about the unabriged versions starting differently.  I was a bit confused.  There is an unabridged version for the Nook.

Can't believe I don't have to work until the 2nd.  I really don't remember the last time I took this much time off.  Today I slept in and didn't do too much.  I went to the grocery store, shopped a little at Shopko and had lunch with Paul.   It's really nice just to be home and do nothing in particular

Thanks Vixmom...on both accounts. I didn't know Paul's mom that well.  She and Paul were very close, so I'm concerned about him.

Sharon sounded very anxious to have me visit.  She saw one friend today and first told me the best visiting time...then said I could come any time at all and that if I was there during PT I could just go with her and be there while she did it.  So, I'm going to try to go tomorrow, but I'm glda I didn't promise it just in case I need to do something for Paul

I have been thinking about Sharon - her medical bills must be astronomical - has anyone been conducting any fundraiser for her?

Oh, dear, very tired.  Kind of wishing I didn't have these two meetings tomorrow so I could write the contextual commentary, but alas I do.  I did start it this evening, however.  And I'm told there may be a problem with our guest star, Hal Linden - it's my fault if there is, because somehow when I wrote him about it I said it was Sunday the 7th, when it's really Sunday the 6th.  He said the 7th was fine because he was out of town on the 6th, but I'm just not sure if he means Saturday the 5th - it's confusing so I wrote him to make sure we're fine.  If not, we'll do without a guest for this show and he can join us for another.  I'm really hoping it works out, though.
