Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no bunions, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading Damon Runyon, eating an onion, and looking at a bunion.

To answer a question from yesterday - I've not thought about recording the song Lost Horizon, but probably will record another song from that score.

Friday morning greetings!  We had a wonderful time at Richard's younger brother's house last night and got home very late.  Three of the 5 Palmer cousins were there:

Chris, an Air Force helicopter pilot whose stories make his parents pale
Jen, a bank (well, credit union) officer just like her grandfather
Rob, our son the paramedic

Jen's husband and Rob's wife were also there.  Chris' girlfriend is stationed in Germany.

And the episode I wanted to see LUCY MEETS LUCILLE BALL.....which wasn't as funny as I thought it might be.  And of course the longest extra was a SPOTLIGHT ON LUCIE ARNAZ......even though she has been "spotlighted" on a couple of other season collections.....in fact the first release of HERE'S LUCY was Lucie's favorite episodes of the show.....

We had a 1978 Hallus Valgus, which, as you might imagine, had a fair amount of sediment, but it was still quite drinkable, definitely a light but amusing vintage.

My nephew, Herman, is headed off to California to play in the Rose Bowl parade. His high school is the first from Lexington, Ky., ever to be chosen to play in the parade. As you can imagine, he's terribly excited. They have to take a long bus ride to Atlanta before flying out. (I pity both the bus driver and the airline.  ;) )

They are last in the parade. I don't know if that means they get cut if the parade runs over time or what. But he has to haul his French horn around for 3 1/2 miles of parade ground.

My favorite author (Kelley Armstrong) has two enovellas that came out in the past two weeks. I am trying to decide whether to buy them or wait till they maybe go on sale at some point.

They are sort of expensive ($5 and $5.99) for enovellas.  Maybe they are longer than I think.

I am trying to decide how high to set my goodreads goal for next year (how many books I think i will read). I include e-novellas and children's books that are over 70 pages. But I don't include other kids books (otherwise that would really increase my total).

Not sure whether to do 100 books again this year. Or to aim for higher. If I do 150 I don't think I would get there.  I could always do 100 and then add more if I think I can do it (you can adjust your goal).

I also don't include free ebooks that i get on my kindle unless they are novels. I have lots of cookbooks and stuff like that.

And a classmate who graduated with my brother and me in the high school class of 1968 died on Wednesday, but no cause was given in the paper......

Oh my goodness!  That's terrible!

DR JRand, I'm so sorry to hear about your friends.

I have been nagging Richard for a couple of years to stop shoveling snow and, finally, he's waiting for a call back from a guy who was recommended by the company that mows our grass.  They don't do residential snow removal because they have so much commercial business.

Smart move. I used to shovel show as a kid, though we never got a great deal in Louisville. Just blizzards or dustings, no in-between. It was back-breaking and exhausting work for a teenager. Breathing can become much more difficult in the cold.

It's time for the big push to win the Broadway World Best Special Theatre Event Award - only three days of voting left - please tell all your friends to vote asap - and if you haven't, really, don't make me bitch-slap you from here to eternity and hell and back, just do it.  It only takes a moment, as Jerry Herman said.  You just register your e-mail address and then you only have to vote in our category.  We're currently being trounced by a show that had a cast of thirty, and a group that has membership in the hundreds - hard to fight that, but we must fight the good fight and get the little guy to win.  We can do it if we all pull together and vote, vote, vote (that is three votes, although we'll need a lot more than that).  Spread the word, word the spread, won't you?

One last parody YouTube for 2012 -

Here's a Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend PARODY on YouTube - sung by Sheree Sano

CHATTING IS A SHOW'S BEST FRIEND - inspired by the NY Times front-page article by Ben Brantley, on standing ovations for the Encores City Center GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES which starred Megan Hilty of SMASH, a true 2012 highlight

Yesterday I did some laundry, then did a run to the local Trader Joe's. It was the LEAST busy I've ever seen that store. It was really nice! I could actually shop without bumping into other shoppers.

PS: I was NOT born to shop. When a store is crowded I can't concentrate on my shopping and just want to head for the exits.

Congratulations to your nephew and his school.  I would record every station airing the parade, at least near the end of the parade.

I still can't tell you how many books I have read this year.  I'm dating them on Goodreads so maybe next year I can count them.

When Keith recently did his hours of shoveling he said I should stay out there with him in case he needed me.  I told him I wasn't concerned he would have a heart attack from shoveling.  It is the men who aren't in good shape & don't do the physical work he does that have heart attacks while shoveling.

I did stay with him and I do like to check up on him when he is working outside.  I worry more about him when he is on the riding mower than when he is shoveling, unless it is icy.  Falls are scary.

I'm looking forward to seeing this.  Thanks for the report and I'm happy to see you & Charlotte had a good time at your movie night.

No plans for today.  It's bright and sunny out but also very cold and windy.  I think I'll venture out and just go wherever my fancy takes me.

How long have you and your fancy been dating?

It's been on and off for years.  But my fancy was in a generous mood today--he took me to Best Buy and bought me a new Blu Ray player.

Your my fancy is very generous to you! ;) I think I need to find my own my fancy.  I am actually thinking about getting a new Blu-ray player.

Actually what I want is a new region-code free DVD player.  For about a month or so, I haven't been able to play ANYTHING on mine...not even US releases.  I thought that it might be that the region code setting somehow got screwed up, but I don't know what could've happened.  Anyway, I was looking on eBay and there are several Blu-ray players that are listed as all-regions for both the Blu-ray AND the DVD!  And several are also under $200.  I think that if I get one of those, I can give my parents my current Blu-ray player (since they now have a hi-def TV) and probably just throw away my DVD player.  I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of it.

When we got our Blu-ray player I forgot to ask Keith about the regional thing.  Oh well, too late now & I don't expect to need that too often.  Heck, we have enough problems just finding the Blu-ray DVD's available to rent.

Happy Last Friday of 2012!

Have waited all day for the postman (or postmistress) to deliver my "held mail" which was scheduled to be delivered to me today.

Where is it is what I want to know.  It's after 5 p.m.   Have sat here ALL DAY because I didn't want to miss it.

Shucks!

DR Jane, a lot of people have heart attacks when shoveling.

I know and I've read, numerous times, most of those of men who are out of shape & not used to strenuous work.  I could be reading info that isn't accurate & Keith could have a heart attack while shoveling, but I believe the odds are against it happening.   Keith is in far better shape than in his youth.

Had two dinners tonight, and I now realize  that was one meal too much.

Please describe them.
The first was at a place called the Fruiteria, which specializes in Mexican small plates. I had a six chile margarita with a grilled octopus salad, a lightly spicy shredded chicken stuffed chipotle chile and pork belly with a corn sauce with almonds in it. Then I had a bowl of fresh fruit.

I then went to Bite, another small plate place, more Eurocentric, where I had a glass of sparkling rose' along with white anchovies and a type of ratatouille, followed by a plate of king trumpet mushrooms stuffed with ground veal and  a nice sauce. I ended up with a glass of white wine that the bartender described as sweet, but thankfully wasn't.

The mushrooms were the best of the lot, although the pork belly was very good.

Bite was very small and had very uncomfortable chairs at the bar (there are only 7 tables). Then the owner came in. She's a lovely creature, dressed to the nines, and she was wearing a perfume that smelled very expensive. Yet she was wearing so much that is was unpleasant to be around her. That made me happy to leave when I did.

Finished with my viewing.  Watched two motion pictures and am watched out for the evening.  I had intended to not eat that much today, and yet...  I had some tuna on a couple of those small Hawaiian roles, I had some slivers of salami from the Eyetalian salami David Wechter got me (one sliver on one of those small Hawaiian roles), a reasonable piece of my daughter's cherry loaf cake, and then the capper - two chocolate Entenmann's donuts.  If I hadn't done those I'd be fine, but there they were staring at me forlornly.

Well, I'm off to the theater for some ushering.  I'm sure that I'll have a rollicking good time. :)

Be back later!

"A Christmas Survival Guide" was a great show!  Three terrific performers and a great band.  Although, I think they changed the songs...is Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" really a part of the show?  There were a couple of other songs that I'd never heard of, but they were all performed quite well.  There was a small audience (only about 80 or so in a house that seats nearly 200), but everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.
