Good New Year, all.

Well over 700 postings last night, a full three pages after I gave up the ghost.

Definitely could use some more sleep.  I'm going to lie down for a bit longer and hope to catch another hour or two.

And then I shall begin to get on with my day.  The main thing will be driving some 90 minutes down into Brooklyn -- Williamsburg, to be specific -- for my friend's New Year's Day Do, which fortunately doesn't even begin until 4:00 in the afternoon.  And it's not a wild thing, just a nice gathering with a diverse selection of people coming and going till about 7:00 or 8:00 at which time it will come to a nice dignified close and we'll all get home at a decent hour.  And that, DRs, shall be my day.

Good morning, all! It was a quiet New Year at 202 West 82nd Street. I got totally caught up in NOT SINCE CARRIE, with Kathy and Anderson on in the background, and I forgot about HHW! I'm happy the partay went on fine without me. I notice that I became the evening's running joke; in fact, I laughed out loud this morning when my friend BK, the ancient rhymer, called me an "ancient pelican."

Yes, BK, the chili is quite deelish, and I wish I could offer you a bowl topped with grated cheese or sour cream, although I may have chopped up too many jalapenos for it. I'd consider it a success. Most of it is now in the freezer, and today I am going to make a huge vat of spaghetti sauce.

So, Happy New Year, everyone!

Good morning and a very Happy New Year to all!

I planned on coming home from work, catching a short (snort) nap and then staying up to see the New Year in.  I didn't think that would be a problem as there was a quite lively party next door--just out side my bedroom window.   Well, I've often said that when I'm sleeping you could set off a cannon and I won't wake up.   And I didn't. It was 7 PM when I started my "nap" and I woke up at 2:45 AM.  I slept though the whole thing!

My New Years dinner is cooking as we speak.  The same but different--pork and Sauerkraut but this year I'm trying it the way my niece Marie makes hers.  Mine was just Sauerkraut and pork with some brown sugar.  Marie said she does the same but adds beer, sliced apples and onions.  I'm giving it a try in my slow cooker.  I will let you know how it tastes later.

I did not make it to midnight last night. In fact, I was in bed by 8pm. I have had a bad cold the last two days, so going to bed early seemed like the healthy choice.

Of course,  I woke up at 4 am...so, got up and watched a movie I had DVR'ed called BLACK WIDOW starring Van Heflin, Gene Tierney, Ginger Rogers, and Peggy Ann Garner. Afterwards I went back to bed.

Today I will likely sit around and watch some old movies unless I start to feel better, in which case I will do some laundry and possibly a little bit of much needed house-cleaning.

It is freezing here this morning. Not literally. I guess my blood has thinned because the 50s now seem cold to me. I usually spend New Year's Day getting organized for the new year. That's what I shall work on today. Then take a walk in the afternoon.

I've been through my receipts, separating them in the various categories:
  *Rent
  *Utilities
  *Insurance: Health/Life/Apartment
  *Income/Tax payments/payouts
  Travel: subway/taxi
  Travel: out of town
  Postage/Fed Ex
  *Subscriptions/Memberships
  *Equipment/Supplies
  Books/Music
  CDs
  DVDs
  Promotion/Donations

The ones starred are pretty much ready to be tallied; the millions of tiny MTA and taxi receipts sit in a huge pile at the bottom of the bag along with restaurant receipts. All the receipts for Books, CDs and DVDs are currently one big pile of rceipts from Amazon, eBay sellers, etc.  That's a huge dent in the chaos of my receipts, so I'm starting ear;y this year. I'd like to have the rceipts ready for my accountant by Feb. 1.

I am up and have written the first five pages of a new book.  I got up a little later than planned, about 10:45, but it took me a while to fall asleep last night, because my head was a jumble of thoughts about different projects for this year.  But I got a good night's sleep, feel good, and jumped right into the book as soon as my vision and brain were clear.  It's cloudy out, but I think I will try to do a New Year's Day jog.  Then I may write another page or two, although for the first day I'm always thrilled if I can do three to five pages and I've done that already.

I saw Les Miserables today.  I enjoyed it overall, but was disappointed in the singing of many of the actors.  While I enjoyed Hugh Jackman in The Boy from Oz and his "one-man show," I really didn't care for his vocals.  I was embarrassed for him during "Bring Him Home."

I'm curious what I'll think of the singing. Funny, Hugh Jackman was not one of the actors I was concerned about, since I"ve heard him sing before.

Sometimes when I am at the theater for one of the tours, I look over at Sandra and ask her if it is just my hearing, or was the singer really bad. She always says the singer is bad. Which is really a shame when you are talking about the pros on a tour.

Last night, the family went to a local restaurant, Budd Bay Café, for dinner and I had the fresh mozzarella chicken burger with fries.  It was pretty good, but not especially flavorful.  After that, I went to the combo birthday/New Year's Eve party that my friends Kevin and Jim were having.  Jim (who's a woman, but goes by the name "Jim") turned 40 and I met her husband Kevin when we were in "Romeo & Juliet" together.  The party was supposed to start at 7:00, but because of dinner, I didn't get there until about 7:50.

I was the second person there. ::) Eventually about a dozen people showed up and chatted and played games and had a delightful time.  A few people left before midnight, but just before midnight, we all checked our cell phones to get the official time (their only TV was downstairs in the basement, but everyone was upstairs) and toasted the new year with champagne, sparkling cider and other assorted liquid refreshments.  We chatted for a couple more hours before I decided to leave.  I got home at about 2:30 a.m., and checked my e-mail, then went to bed.

It is freezing here this morning. Not literally. I guess my blood has thinned because the 50s now seem cold to me. I usually spend New Year's Day getting organized for the new year. That's what I shall work on today. Then take a walk in the afternoon.

I don't recall ever going to a movie on New Year's Day, but that sounds like a very good plan to me.

Remember 50 without sun can feel colder than on a nice 50 degree winter day on the East Coast.

I was trying to decide what to read as my first read of  the year. I wanted it to be something really good. I decided on Lisa Gardner' new book Touch & Go that comes out next month.

I noticed on Goodreads you got this one early, congratulations.

Last night I decided I didn't like the book I was reading.  I did a Barnes & Noble search for books under $2.99 and decided to read THE SOLDIER'S WIFE by Margaret Elroy.  I'm enjoying it very much and it was a nice way to bring in the New Year while Keith was sleeping ;)

Today I checked to see what books my library has by Elroy & darn, the book I'm reading is the only eBook of hers they offer.  I'm still glad I paid the $2.99 so I didn't have to wait to read it.

The book takes place during the German occupation on Guernsey.

Keith & I went with friends to a couple of the parades, camped out half the night first.  They were fun.  The second time we talked the very hesitant parent's of a friend into letting her go.  We promised it had been safe and that we would watch out for her & stay in a group.  We were all on the ground in sleeping bags when someone in the crowd tossed a firecracker.  Of all the people guess who it landed on.  You should have seen the scramble to get that off of her FAST.  All was fine and it was put out before any damage was done & while she was still napping. :)

I was disappointed that what I watched today of the parade did not show anything about the making of the floats. They used to sometimes show the floats as they were being assembled. I love watching this!

I did see one couple get married this year on top of a float. But it was weird that their parents had to be at the bottom of the float and not even see the wedding. Who had this brilliant idea?

Watched Black Widow on Sunday. Wasn't it fun?

I think you can wait on Jack Reacher until it hits DVD. Some good performances, but Tom Cruise is so flat and the direction so inept that it seems to be fighting against itself for too much of the movie. Cruise had to emote once in the movie and you could hear titters in the audience.

I had never heard of pork and suaerkraut on New Year Day until I came to HHW.  So if it is an American custom, it isn't known everywhere in the U.S.  I like sauerkraut, so I would love to try it.  I don't think I will wait until next New Year to try it.

My sister and I were going to go the movies today (she wants to see "Monsters, Inc." in 3-D), but she decided that she didn't want to leave her house.  So, I'm going to go and see if tickets are available for "The Hobbit."  I haven't read any of yesterday's posts after my last one, so I've got more than 20 pages to ketchup with when I get back. ;)

I got to the theater at about 5:00 pm, anticipating a huge crowd, but no one else showed up until about 5:35.  By the time the theater was cleaned from the previous showing and they opened it, there were probably eight people in line.  By the time the commercials/previews started, there were a couple dozen people.  More people showed up by the time the actual movie started, though, so it was a good night to see it.  I got a great seat and it wasn't crowded around me.

As for the movie itself, I didn't mind the length or the extra characters (mostly because I don't remember the original book) but the look of the 48 frames-per-second 3-D is very different than regular 3-D.  At times, it really did look like I was seeing actual things in front of me and not just a movie.  But it really didn't have that "film" look at all...like the look of a hi-def daytime soap opera.  That was a bit weird.

But what I noticed more was that it really looked like they used natural lighting throughout the whole movie.  All the daytime scenes (even indoor) were very bright.
