Title: THE HIGH-PITCHED SQUEAL

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a high-pitched squeal, and now it is time for you to post until the high-pitched squealing cows come home.

I do have thermals for the football games on Friday night.

It's butt cold in the stands.  The evening it rained was a trip.

My place is 1/3 of a house built in 1912.  The electrical was replaced so I could move in.   The heater is next, which I don't want them to do as it requires removing an outside wall.  WHAT A MESS, I DO NOT LIKE MESSES.

 ;)

The other 2/3's of the house has a fake fireplace heater thing that was installed when they bought the house the same year I moved in.    The neighbors did not mind the mess.

And the summer weather is fine here.

A friend of mine is working on installing a solar farm in Lancaster.  They told the crew (some 400 people) it will be in the 30's the rest of the work week.

They all wear lots of clothes.   And ski masks for their faces.   Now that's cold for sunny Southern California.

This is a good thing.

Good morning, all!

I've been watching the Oscar nominations; I found fascinating the nominations that got applause from the crowd there and the ones that did not.  For example, big applause for Bradley Cooper's name, no applause for Daniel Day Lewis or Hugh Jackman.

I got a phone call from DRvixmom around 9:30 last night; she asked me to report on her computer virus, and then voila! Welcome back, DR vixmom!

I am off to Toyland. I may meet up with DR edisaurus later today or tomorrow morning.  She says  that last year was a real ordeal and that she is coming back to us soon.

The crime case I followed obsessively was the OJ Simpson trial; I still read everything new about Lizzie Borden and Jack D. Ripper.

Haven't read the full list of Oscar nominations yet, but the one story I did read made be pleased for both "Amour," which I really want to see based on BK's recommendations, and "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which I was crazy about.

The rest seemed fairly predictable.

TOD: We had two serial killers (three actually. One of them was a team) in 2005/2006. They were all caught around the same time. The Baseline Killer first hit near one of my favorite birding places and lived near where we were meeting for church while waiting for our new building to be completed. The Serial Shooter(s) hit about a mile from here once.

That means that LINCOLN is a lock foe Best Picture.

TOD: There was a case in L.A. last year that had me riveted. A teenager was accused of bringing a gun to school and deliberately shooting a fellow classmate in the head because he was offended that his classmate was gay and had behaved too outrageously. Yet the jury refused to convict the boy because they seemed to agree with his actions, so it ended with a hung jury. Rather than face a retrial, the boy later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. He's still facing 20 years in prison, but the messages coming from the case were truly ugly.

In theory, I love a good crime and keeping up with the developments.  In practice, I don't think I've ever stayed with one all that long.  Certainly O.J. Simpson for a while, but not consistently and not throughout.

How about the JFK assassination?  I loved reading up on all the earlier theories, evidence, etc., but finally dropped it by the time the '80s rolled around and new suspects and theories were popping up every month.

Watergate might actually be my favorite of all.  A wonderful cast of characters, and superb entertainment with twists and turns every step of the way.

We have a big trial going on right now. Frankly, I don't think it was that much of a big deal when the crime occurred. I mean, it was in the paper, but it wasn't a big sensation at the time.

Two more votes for OJ and Watergate......

There have been a few more that I watched casually - but cases like OJ and Casey Anthony so shake my confidence in the juries, that I find it difficult to watch.

I sort of kept up with the Jerry Sandusky trial - but lawyers like the one he had....and the one Casey Anthony had...and ALL of OJ's team - out to beat the system at any price - upset me to no end.  Everyone is entitled to a fair trial.....but some of those lawyers bend and shape the law and the system for their own ends and publicity......and make a travesty of our system of justice.

We had a local case here, I think from 2009-2012. A man's mansion caught fire, and he was lucky to be able to escape the second story because he happened to have his scuba gear and a rope ladder in his upstairs bedroom. (??) Investigation found lots of flammable stuff set up in the house. It was discovered that he was facing foreclosure, and he was charged with arson. At his trial last summer, he was convicted. Immediately after the verdict was read, he turned red, convulsed and died. Cyanide.

DR Vixmom, the DVD/VHS recorder combo you posted a link for appears to be the very same machine that I have.

What is particularly nice about it is that it will record onto DVD shows from all of the cable stations and/or from the DVR, which most DVD recorders are no longer capable of doing due to some sort of copy protection that a majority of stations now have. Somehow or other, this machine will override that.

Warren William? Smarmy, yet effective.

Yet an interesting person, if one is to believe imdb.com: "Personally, Warren William was a shy and retiring type. Speaking of him, five-time Warners co-star Joan Blondell said that William "was an old man even when he was a young man." According to San Francisco critic Mick LaSalle's 2002 book "Dangerous Men: Pre-Code Hollywood and the Birth of the Modern Man" (New York: St. Martin's Press, 2002), William, who quite unlike his early Warner Bros.' stereotype as a heartless "love 'em and leave 'em"-style seducer, remained married to one woman throughout his adult life. He was an active inventor with multiple patents, designing one of the first recreational vehicles, reportedly so he could continue to sleep while being driven to the studio in the morning."

It's a media clique at these announcements...not necessarily a representation of Academy voters.  I'm glad Cooper was nominated.  I'm also glad DiCaprio wasn't.

Why, oh, why, do I find Phoenix's nomination very satisfying despite his uber-strange behavior a couple of years ago?

DR LAURA - your post reminded me of a case that is happening in Indpls. right now.....the explosion of the house in a nice neighborhood....

After 30 days of investigation, the woman who lived there, her boyfriend, and his brother have been arrested on charges of murder, conspiracy, and countless other things....  They appeared before a judge and now we are waiting for the trial to start.  It was a foregone conclusion and after seeing the homeowner on the news, it was fairly obvious something was up.....

Hopefully they will ALL serve time.  A neighbor and her husband were killed....

Then I saw the Oscar noms.  I don't know why Druxy is surprised at the non-nomination for Mr. Hooper - whatever one thinks of the film, Hooper's direction is AWFUL.  And the film would NOT be up for Best Picture if they hadn't made this inane rule that up to ten films could be nominated.  When they did that, whatever last vestige of Oscar interest I had flew out the window.  If there were only five slots, it would be a much different story.  What's really interesting is the difference this year between the DGA noms and the Oscar direction noms.

Joaquin's nomination was entirely predictable, since all the actor idiots think that's brilliant "ACTING".  The shame is that a truly wonderful actor who should have been nominated, wasn't - not a show-off performance like Phoenix or the typical Oscar bait performance of Mr. Washington - Jean-Louis Trintingnant.  But then, he's subtle and real and today's actors don't really understand that.  They understand whispering and/or over-the-top ala Phoenix.  And it's the actor's branch of the Academy that nominates the five people.  At least they nominated Mr. Trintingnat's co-star Emmanuelle Riva.

I've been home about an hour, dealing with a surly mailman, a can of kidney beans that I could not open, and other hellish occurrences. On a happy note, Bruce Pomahac's Christmas gift finally arrived today from London.

DR John G, I got a package from you today. I will be opening it shortly. Thank you.

I'm just P.O.'d that Jack Black didn't get a nomination for "Bernie." But I guess it wasn't seen enough.

Thursday....feh.   Stayed home feeling poorly yesterday.  Listless, extremely tired, stomach unsettled.  At work today, am already drained.

Still....I'm here...and I'm alive.  There's that!
I hope you don't have the flu. With all the news stories about that today, it's the big worry on my mind. I futzed around and never got the shot. Of course, everyone's out right now.

I got a flu shot back in November...it was the H1N1 vaccination.   I hope that's effective against the current strain causing all the troubles.

From what I have been reading we are protected against one strain and not another. It is kind of confusing.  Following is from the most detailed article I've read so far.  I actually which is wasn't so detailed.

"The predominant flu strain circulating is an H3N2, which typically kills more people than the H1N1 strains that usually predominate; the relatively lethal 2003-4 “Fujian flu” season was overwhelmingly H3N2.  this year’s flu shot is well-matched to the H3N2 strain."

I needed a bit of laughter this morning.  Last night I found out that Sherlock's brother Boz lost his battle with the kidney disease.  With all the tests they ran, including a biopsy, they couldn't find out what caused this.  Since he was a Canadian champion and the father of several litters they fortunately were able to rule out this was genetic or cancer.

I've never had that problem.  I've even been able to record pay-per-view movies on my DVR and burn them to (standard) DVD.

;)

It is a rather recent develepment, DR George. Older DVD recorders can record any channel, but most newer ones cannot bypass the anti-recording signal thingy...which I didn't find out until replacing my old machine.

I am trying to decide where I will stay on my next (hopefully in April) trip to Los Angeles. I have always wanted to stay at The Mayfair Hotel. It is so classic..and cheap...but reviews are terrible.

I am not that picky, usually, but several reviews talk about people's feet turning black due to  walking on the carpet barefoot. That just doesn't sound good.

Some of the other hotels that I would love to stay at are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range.

The academy vote 5 songs again this instead of the embarrassing two songs from last year. I've been listening to them all and quite an interesting collection of songs. Very different for very different films.
Before My Time from Chasing Ice. (A Documentary sung over the end credits)
Suddenly from Les Miserables (Oscar bait. A new song written for the score)
Pi's Lullaby from Life of Pi. (Sung in Tamil!)
Skyfall from Skyfall (The only song I believe made the charts)
Everyone Needs A Best Friend from Ted (a very 50's/60's style song)

One first hearing I like Pi's Lullabye the best even though I cannot understand the lyrics. My second favorite is Everyone Needs A Friend. I would have love to hear Seth MacFarlane sung the song as Brian from Family Guy. My third choice is Before My Time.

Skyfall and Suddenly are my least favorite. With Suddenly getting the #5 spot

All of the motels on Ventura Blvd get bad ratings, also. That would be the most convenient area for me to stay, however, and it seems so Perry Mason-like.

The place in Burbank that I stayed at last time was inexpensive but was waaaay out past San Fernando Blvd and I kept getting lost everytime I went someplace.

I do have an offer to stay in Encino for a few of those days with a former Miss USA, so I will probably do that for at least one or two nights. And I love her dog, so that will be fun to have some canine company.

My patty melt was from Jerry's Deli.  I'd never noticed it on the menu, but the man seated in the booth across from me was having it and it looked really good, so I took a chance.  They happen to do very good burgers at Jerry's and it was a great patty melt - just the burger, cheese, and onions (and the ketchup I slathered all over it).

Cyanide.

I remember that.  The TV camera caught him popping the cyanide tablet.

My Papa's  ham casserole recipe

egg noodles - wide or extra wide
1 egg
1 quart sourceam
1 stick butter
seasoned breadcrumbs
1 - 3 cups minced ham

Egg noodles, cook al dente, drain, toss with butter,

take quart of sour cream reserve a 1/8 cup - mix a beaten  egg into the quart, mix in with the egg noodles

stir in the mince ham, put the whole thing in a well buttered casserole dish

top with sour cream (like icing)  sprinkle with seasoned breadcrumbs and paprika  dot with butter

bake at 400 until brown and bubbly

serve with more sour cream on the side

you can always add broccoli or asparagus if you like but we like it plain

it is also wonderful fried up the next day with a couple of eggs

That is what I make at Christmas. It's nothing but butter (and a lot of it), almonds and almond extract, some jam (all of the ones I use lately are homemade, but not in my home) and the usual suspects: sugar, flour, salt.

What jams? Ginger Peach, Mexican Plum and Mustang Grape were what I had on hand.

Hamburger, rye bread, & cheese.  My mother used to make a mini, opened face version of this to serve as appitizers.

And grilled onions

Yes, my patty melt was medium well - no rare for me.  Jane, I have always used ketchup on patty melts - just like the flavor that way.  I do use 1000 island on my bacon cheeseburgers, though.

Other than my own trials, OJ is the only trial I really followed closely.  I met some of the defense team before the trial and most of the rest of them afterwards.   I read 24 books about the case.  Interestingly enough they were all different.  I like Jeffrey Toobin's the best , if I remember correctly)

I thought Ben Affleck should have been nominated for best director.  I knew the ending of the story and I was still in suspense and was worried that maybe I had forgot how it really ended.  It takes a good director to do that

Yes, great movie about the Iranian hostage crisis.  Six people got out when the embassy was taken over and hid out in the Canadian Ambassadors home.  This is the story of how the CIA attempted to rescue them.

First patty melt I ever had was at an International House of Pancakes.  Love at first bite.

I think grilled onion is traditional, but I always remember having it raw on the Hamburger Hamlet's patty melts.  Which worked beautifully for me, but I'll take 'em either way.

Did a little channel surfing this evening and landed on THAT THING YOU DO.  I have never once seen it all the way through, and tonight I just caught the scenes shot at the Ambassador Hotel, which are just heartbreaking.  And you want to know what killed me the most about it -- assuming it was the real thing, or a very good re-creation of it?  I'll tell you.  The coffee shop.  Remember when hotels had coffee shops?  Just beautiful.  A coffee shop to die for.  And from the looks of this coffee shop, they probably served a pretty good patty melt.

I disagree with that.  If there were only five Best Picture nominees  I think Les Miz would be at the top of the list.  It is exactly the type of film that the Academy loves.

I am very sorry to read this, Jane.  My sympathies

Was she Miss USA when we still were 13 Colonies?

Well, I'm still at work. :P But I'm FINALLY leaving.  I've been working on our fiscal year rollover and I HOPE that a new option (just one little check box not available before) will do what it seems to indicate that it will do.  If it does, this will be the easiest fiscal rollover ever!  If not, it'll just be the way that I expected it to be...slow and cumbersome.  We'll see.

I'm going to (hopefully) come to work early tomorrow and test it.  I just remembered that it can easily be tested, but I didn't think about that until now...when I NEED to leave.

Anyway, I'm outta here!
