Well, you've read the notes, the notes had all the balls in the air, and now it is time for you to post until the juggling cows come home.

Saturday morning greetings from HOME!  We boarded the plane in a timely manner and then sat for 5+ hours as the weather deteriorated.  When we finally landed at Newark, we'd missed our connection to Dayton.  They got us on a flight to Cincinnati and Rob and Mary Linda picked us up and brought us home.  Today we'll retrieve Richard's car from Dayton.  By the time I fell into bed, I'd been up for 24 hours.

And I'm sick...

So sorry you didn't get away on time Ginny. The TV news here has been full of complaints from passengers who similarly had to sit on planes for many hours yesterday waiting to take off. That's an appalling way to treat people.

After 3 hours, they offered the option of getting off, but said there would be no way of getting back on and your checked baggage would go to Newark.  We didn't really see any point to leaving the plane.

Very interesting, about the 21 chapters.  Never would have noticed that, either.  But, once knowing it, it's just another little thing to appreciate.  There's something comforting about consistency, even with something that would not seem to matter in and of itself.

Horrible.  There's something so lacking in our system and our facilities, that people need to be trapped on a plane for hours without options.  Getting off but not getting back on?  And that "option" is only presented after three hours of boring, constrained entrapment?

By the time we got to the 3-hour mark, we'd pulled away from the gate and taxied to the line-up for a runway that was closed before our turn.  Because our original gate was by then occupied by an arriving flight, we were in a holding area.  Anyone who chose to get off was bussed back to the terminal.  I don't know if anyone opted to leave the plane.

One of my co-workers is leaving after almost 10 years.
I want to give a little gift. I want to make a cd of "Good-bye" songs.

This is what I have so far

Be Back Soon (Oliver)
So Long Dearie (Hello, Dolly)
So Long Farewell (The Sound of Music)
As If We Never Said Goodbye (Sunset Blvd)
Don't Like Goodbyes (House of Flowers)
Goodbye For Now (Reds)
Goodbye (The Producers)
We Musn't Say Goodbye (Stagedoor Canteen)
The Promise (I'll Never Say Goodbye)

Most of these are gut wrenching ballads. I need some upbeat songs. Any suggestions?

I'm glad you made it home. But I wish they would realize these things before they board people. So unfair. Why should someone have to sit for 5 hours. And then to tell people they could get off but not back on and then lose their luggage?  I am claustrophobic and would have been very unhappy to sit there for so long.

I'll bet they didn't tell people it would be an extra 2 hours. :)

But who would be willing to miss their flight and possibly lose their luggage.

Since the weather was so bad did they give people the option BEFORE getting on the plane not to board (reschedule).

DR Matthew, the one good thing about yesterday's flight was that it wasn't fully booked.  The seats are 3-3-3, and few, if any, middle seats were occupied.  Richard and I had aisle seats across from each other, so it was pretty comfortable.  At least for the first few hours...

Good morning, all!

DR Ginny, I am happy to hear that you finally did land in Middletown, OH. I had a similar ordeal once, but my only aggravation was that by the time plane took off, I'd finished the book I planned to read on the flight, and all I could do during the actual flight was read the ailrlines literature. Oy! Thank you for the post card. I hope you will be feeling better quite soon.

I slept late: whatever drugs I've for the pains in my neck and shoulders are not strong enough to knock me out so it takes forever to get to sleep.  It was niceand chilly in the apartment around 7:30, so I decided to stay inside the comforter rather than get up and face the day.

I will shortly begin the laundry, write up the corrections on the Moross score, and think about a trip to the market.

Been there, done that, learning a critical lesson in so doing.  For some years I've viewed air travel time as one of the greatest opportunities for good, solid, uninterrupted reading.  I know of no better way to pass and take advantage of the time.

But I majorly blew it once, on a four-hour flight back here from Dallas, by finding myself with but a few chapters left in the book I was reading -- just as they announced an additional one-hour wait on the tarmac before takeoff.  DOOMED.  And all my own doing.  I nursed those chapters as slowly as I could, knowing there was nothing but the flight magazine which usually takes about five minutes to get through, even when there IS something worth reading.

So, never again.  Now I always make sure I have at least one whole additional book that I know I can get into should the need arise.  And I only read books that are printed on paper.  Haven't yet been attracted to anything electronic.  Fortunately, I have plenty right here on my shelves to pick from.

This morning, I'm going to the Met.  Actually, I'm going to the simulcast of the Met's "Maria Stuarda" as one the leads graduated from the SF Conservatory and actually sang in my church choir before I got there.  So, I'm very excited to hear her. When she's in SF, she pops in and sings at church sometimes.  It's quite a treat for all of us.

It's a big subject.  And important to me, but I don't know where to begin.

Okay.  Just in general:

Art Deco period commercial buildings (stores, restaurants, theaters, offices) and Arts & Crafts (roughly 1910-1930?) style homes.

There's always the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore Goodbye-ee song:

Now is the time to say Goodbye
Now is the time to yield a sigh (yield it, yield it)
Now is the time to wend our waaaayeeeeee
Until we meet again
Some sunny day.

Goodbye
Goodbye
We're leaving now,
Tattybye
Goodbye
We wish you all goodbye
Fartatata, fartatata..

Ennis House is about as majestically other-worldly as you can get, I think.  It's incredible.

Get an ereader. Then you'll have tons of reading options all the time.

I love actual books. And I did not think that I would love my kindle as much as I do.  But I honestly cannot imagine living without it now. I still read 50% physical books. You don't have to give that up entirely unless you want to. But it is so handy and then you don't have to carry the book around with you.

DR Jennifer, the only problem with an e-reader is that they make you turn them off during take-off and landing.  I had only my iPad and found it frustrating to have to stow it during those times.  In the future, I will have at least one dead-tree book or a couple of my own magazines.

I finessed, which took about an hour because I made a lot of little changes and added a few things.  Then I took a shower to kick start the inspiration part, got a way to start the new chapter that I liked and wrote three pages.  All subsequent pages will have to be written when I get back around five.  I should be able to do at least five to seven more, and if I'm feeling industrious I'll try to finish the current chapter - I know exactly how it ends so that's nice.

Were any of you Ohio or Midwestern types around Columbus enough in earlier years to remember the rendering plant near I-71 (or whatever the original highway was) and Frank Road on the south side of town?  You could smell it for a couple of miles in either direction.

A childhood memory.  Made those trips to and from Cincinnati just a little special.

"Maria Stuarda" was a wonderful opera.  I'm amazed at the technology.  I was able to text a friend of mine that was at the performance as it was being simulcast.  This might get me to more opera, even if it is in a movie theatre.  They filled in a lot of blanks during intermission with interviews and such.  Next is a production of "Rigoletto" which is set in Las Vegas.  I think I'm going to try and get there also.

DR Jennifer, the only problem with an e-reader is that they make you turn them off during take-off and landing.  I had only my iPad and found it frustrating to have to stow it during those times.  In the future, I will have at least one dead-tree book or a couple of my own magazines.

But they would only make you turn it off for a few minutes right? Not for the full 5 hours?  To turn off a kindle is really nothing.

They were very accommodating about keeping us comfortable and entertained.  In the 5 hours we had 2 or 3 false alarms when we had to do tha take-off routine.

Thanks for the vibes!

One of my co-workers is leaving after almost 10 years.
I want to give a little gift. I want to make a cd of "Good-bye" songs.

This is what I have so far

Be Back Soon (Oliver)
So Long Dearie (Hello, Dolly)
So Long Farewell (The Sound of Music)
As If We Never Said Goodbye (Sunset Blvd)
Don't Like Goodbyes (House of Flowers)
Goodbye For Now (Reds)
Goodbye (The Producers)
We Musn't Say Goodbye (Stagedoor Canteen)
The Promise (I'll Never Say Goodbye)

Most of these are gut wrenching ballads. I need some upbeat songs. Any suggestions?
No Goodbyes from Over Here!
Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye (Seven Lively Arts)

Regarding the tarmac, I was stuck once for three hours. I can sit quietly without a problem, but our staff was not at all accommodating. I'm not sure what the regs are, but we were not permitted to use the bathrooms. Nor were we able to get anything to drink. Maybe they thought by not allowing us drinks we wouldn't want the bathrooms?? We were not  given the option to leave the plane. Things may have changed for the better since, but there really needs to be a better way to handle things.

TOD:

One of my favorite buildings is the PSFS Building in center city Philadelphia:

Built in the early 30s as the headquarters of the PSFS Bank.  I remember being able to see the red neon sign atop the building from miles away through my parents bedroom window when we lived in Camden.

The building is now occupied by a Lowes Hotel.  The sign still continues to shine at night.

I had a similar ordeal once, but my only aggravation was that by the time plane took off, I'd finished the book I planned to read on the flight, and all I could do during the actual flight was read the ailrlines literature. Oy!

Oh, I can spend a great many hours lost in the pages of a Sky Mall Catalog.  But I always have at least two e-books on my Kindle - just in case.

I have discovered that there is too much of a good thing. I have consumed too much acid in these cocktails over the last few days. And I will need to take it easy.

One of my favorites was the Fitzgerald:

The Fitzgerald Cocktail

1.5 oz dry gin, preferably Hendricks
0.75 oz lemon juice
0.75 oz simple syrup
2 dashes Pimento bitters

Earlier tonight, I just had the TV on and RTV was showing "The Colgate Comedy Hour" from the 1950s with hosts Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.  I didn't see the very beginning...but I hit the record button and it saved what was in the buffer.  During the end credits, I noticed that Norman Lear co-wrote it.  They also listed the song, "Millie the Fillie," written by Jerry Bock and Larry Holofcener.  It was in the first 10 minutes that I didn't record, so I checked YouTube and it's actually there.  Two listings of the exact same version of the song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb-I1E5iWGw

or

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH6ZL194qTo

And it turns out that Jack Cassidy sings part of it!  Pretty cool. :)
