Title: I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES
Post by: bk on January 26, 2013, 12:53:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes believed in fairies, as do I, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they also believe in fairies.

Having re-seen Michael Gough in Herman Cohen's HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM and KONGA, I've now ordered the DVD of BLACK ZOO which I've not seen before but can't wait to see because Michael is apparently even more over-the-top demented in that film!

Good morning, all.

Continued get-better vibes for DRs Ron Pulliam, Sam, Ginny and all in need.

Off to judge a wine competition today (if my nose stops sneezing long enough to let me smell anything), then dinner and dancing. So, I'll be E&T for most of it.

Yes DR DOUG....yes he is....and THE BLACK ZOO was filmed in California....so his targets are Americans.....including, of course - since it's a Herman Cohen film....a young (mute) male assistant:  Rod Lauren.  It was directed by Robert Gordon who played the Al Jolson character as a boy in THE JAZZ SINGER.....and who was the boyfriend of actress Allison Hayes.

Throw in Jeanne Cooper - and who could ask for anything more?

TOD: I remember hating the Mia Farrow version on TV, but loving Mary Martin. I once saw Cathy Rigby, who was fun, but the best "Peter Pan" production of the musical I've seen was at the Empire State Theater in Albany where the cavernous theater was perfect for all of the high flying. Don't remember who played Peter, but I also remember loving Ugg A Wugg.

My first viewing of PETER PAN was of course the Mary Martin television versions.....and even then I kept wondering why Peter was played by an old woman......

I saw Cathy Rigby tour in PETER PAN in the 1990's and it was most enjoyable......and I was in a production of the show....playing Mr. Darling....although since it was a "young people's" show, I did not also play Captain Hook.  Mrs. Darling and I were the only adults in the show.

I loved Nana the dog.

Good morning, all.

Got up way too early for a Saturday.  Fed the beasts and laid back down in the trusty La-Z-Boy recliner to try to catch a few more Z's, but more than that just to give my back a bit of relief from overnight soreness.  That did the job pretty well, and now I'm sucking up the Green Mountain Nantucket Blend whilst ketchuping on these notes.

More Nantucket Blend!

TOD:

Mary Martin on television, always in black and white because my family didn't get their first color set till way late.  To the best of my knowledge I never saw it in color at all until I "grew up" and got the laserdisc.  And boy, was that a return to one of the great cultural artifacts of childhood.  Pure magic.  By then, it had been many years since I'd seen it, and I watched it straight through twice.

Never got my arse to a professional production, nor have I watched any other one on DVD.  Yet.  That will be remedied.  The only other one I've even seen, period, was when I played in the pit for a community theater production in 2007 in the wilds of Connecticut.  That was great fun, even if, sad to say, I was only playing string reinforcement on synth because it was a volunteer orchestra and they only had a couple of violins and bass.  Someone else already had the piano/celeste part.

I LOVE this score!  And it was equal parts frustrating and rewarding to navigate the still-original manuscript parts with cues and notations that say "Mary" does this and "Mary" does that!  I figured that would go away someday and I kept a photocopy for myself -- but for expediency I had to capture it on 11" x 17" paper and I have yet to cut it down and assemble it, so it sits in a box, waiting for me.

Of course, I since learned that McGlinn was restoring this one!  And boy did it need it.  The piano/conductor score itself was lacking in many ways, and it seemed that nothing agreed with anything else.  DR ELMORE:  Did that get completed, and were you involved with this one?  Please forgive if I've already asked that.

Wish I could have caught this production!  Wonderful, wonderful show.

TOD - the Mary Martin TV version was a big part of my childhood.  I hadn't seen it, nor heard any of the music, in a long time when MM died.  When I heard "I know a place where dreams are born..." in the news report of her death, I cried and cried.

The only time I've seen it on stage was when Middletown's Summer Youth Theatre did it in 1996.  Now, as DR Elmore knows, the quality of SYT productions can vary, so I was not expecting much.  It turned out to be quite good, due in large part to the young lady who played Peter.  It was fun to see the show through the eyes of our son who was 10 at the time.

Miss Saigon auditions are today.  I got a lovely email from the executive director wishing us well today, which I was quite taken by.  It's a important show for me as well as the director.  Sentimental in a lot of ways for me, also.  Even though I played it in 2006, this time around, the stage manager is my best friend and it's one of the first shows we saw together.  I hope we find the people we need.

TOD:

I also grew up with the MM TV version.  In b&w since we didn't get a color TV until '68 or so, but the last year it was broadcast ('65 or '66?) we were at my aunt's house and I got to watch it in Living Color!  I was mesmerized.

I remember being taken to see the Disney animated PP.  While I enjoyed it, it never was a huge favorite of mine.

For a hoot (and for $10 seats in the balcony), a friend and I went to the Sandy Duncan revival in '79.  Our intent was to make fun of the whole thing, but like BK said-- there's no fighting the show (or Sandy Duncan, for that matter.) By time they did "Ugh-A-Wah" we were completely won over.  Christopher Hewitt was Mr. Darling/Capt. Hook and he was wonderfully hammy.

DR John G mentioned the Mia Farrow TV version.  I do remember watching it but I don't remember if it was the stage show or not.

Saturday Question for BK:  how is the stage show depicting Tinkerbell these days?  They used a laser back in 79 (which was state-of-the-art back then) but it had that herky-jerky effect to it.  I was wondering if the effect has been improved since.

DR ChasSmith, I did not work with McGlinn on the Samuel French materials for PETER PAN; that occirred after our falling out in 2002.  I understand it was a typical McGlinn situation: finish the product, do no proof reading, submit a set of materials full of errors, take the check, and burn another bridge.

So anyhoo, moving right along...

I just listened -- and paid attention, wasn't puttering around doing anything else -- to the PETER PAN album.  I've had it since way before I knew any of you fine people here (it even has a water-damaged booklet; I think I picked this one up at a library sale or some such), so this was a time to reconnect with it, study the liner notes, and enjoy it anew.

WONDERFUL!!  A great put-together of material, wonderful orchestrations by one DR ELMORE, and just one delight after another.  And the song Guy Haines sings is beautiful.

Kevin, I didn't know you went to hear any "H"s; I thought you just saw "B"s. Oh, that's right. You saw Sandy Bainum, but then that's a "B", as well.

I now have it on good authority that Lenny's, the new deli that will be replacing Junior's on Westwood Blvd, will open on Feb 7--and with lower prices. It makes me wonder if someone was watching the decliine of Junior's and saying, "$15 for a sandwich and they say they can't make money?!!" and grabbed the space when Junior's closed.

And, yes, my neighbor got his old job back.  I wish them all well.

Chester, our new pooch, has his second day of school today.

During this past week of study, he has learned "stay," and "down," however he seems to do it only when he want to.

 :-[

If that continues after you finish your classes you might need a personal trainer to make a couple of house visits.

Thank you, DR Jeanne, on both counts.  My husband picked out that shawl for me several years ago and, as you can see, it got quite a workout in England!  It just came back from the dry cleaners today.

I wonder how the sandwiches will compare for less money.  Will that mean they are smaller or the quality won't be as good.  I've also been thinking with the bad press the landowners got that Lenny, whoever he is, negotiated a good deal with a lower rent the first year.

Will your neighbor be making the same amount of money?  Of course I know that tips make a difference.

The wonderful Kathi Moss who was in the original Broadway casts of Grease (Cha Cha), Nine (Saraghina  sp?) and Grand Hotel passed away today. Last week (Jan 14) her friends got together at an Actor Fund's concert to raise money for her. She was unable to attend, but was able to watch it via computer.

I went to Juliana's photo shoot, but didn't stay.  Then I got emergency texts telling me I had to come back because they didn't know what to do.  Curious, since I'd have a very long and detailed discussion with the photographer about it.  I couldn't go back since the rehearsal was starting, so I texted her and e-mailed her and called her and told her to call me right back so I could hear exactly what was going on.  Haven't heard a peep since.  I have my suspicions about what may have happened, and said suspicion has nothing to do with the photographer, who is great.

Of course, the Mary Martin version was a memorable part of my childhood.

I never saw Sandy Duncan---wish I had.

Cathy Rigby is amazing!  The first time I saw her my mouth was open with amazement!  Not to mention Brent as Captain Hook, who clearly is having the time of his life, as BK said.

Kevin, you have probably already seen this clip, but you can get a good idea of the "joy" that Sandy Duncan brought to the role of Peter.  I saw her do the show four times on Broadway, and every time I saw her, I became a child again.  And I was at the stage door after every performance.

As I mentioned before, I saw Sandy Duncan do PETER PAN four times on Broadway.  She just blew me away.  That was also the first production to add Sandy flying out over the house on the final bow.  And Sandy was absolutely charming to every single adult and child that waited for her at the Stage Door.

I hate the DVD version of Rigby's Peter Pan - it's just all "canned" and there's nothing exciting about it - in other words, hideously directed by people who think they know what they're doing.  It's the Sandy Duncan version that should have been filmed - shockingly, it wasn't even given a cast album!  I would have done it instantly if I were doing such things back then.

I gotta tell you.
Title: Re: I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES
Post by: George on January 26, 2013, 10:56:52 PM
Here's the first:

Around 20 years ago (can really have been that long ago??...but it was), I was in a local production of Peter Pan.  It actually was an Evergreen State College production.  From what I remember, they auditioned several girls and women for the role of Peter, but no one was quite "right."
Title: Re: I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES
Post by: TCB on January 26, 2013, 10:57:43 PM
I think it was Dan (the Man) who asked about how Tinkerbell is done now.   In this current production, I believe, the role of Tinkerbell was being played by Honey Boo Boo.  Sadly, she has gained so much weight that they could no longer fly her as well as flying Peter and the three Darling children, so she has been replaced by the new and improved laser.

Chunk #2:

The choreographer was Stephen Terrell, who had choreographed the BK-recorded Das Barbecü!  The director and producers (I think) just couldn't find anyone who had the boyish charm that Stephen happened to have (being a boy, and all), so they finally decided to ask him to play the role!  He accepted and was a terrific Peter!  AND he was a REAL boy! ;) He was a delightful person.  I didn't get to know him very well at all, but in the few interactions we had, he was very nice and polite...and, of course, very nice to look at.

What's wrong with my chunks?
Title: Re: I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES
Post by: George on January 26, 2013, 11:02:53 PM
I played Bill Jukes, one of the pirates and the first to be killed by Peter, and had a great time.  However, the production itself was a troubled production.  The the biggest problem was that the set designer didn't really read the script or find out what the off-stage space at the Washington Center was like (it has no stage left wing...there is only about eight feet before you run into the ropes for the flys).
Title: Re: I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES
Post by: George on January 26, 2013, 11:03:42 PM
The designer had built a raked ship deck that had to be completely cut (after being paid for!) because it wouldn't actually fit on the stage and there was no place to store it when it was not on-stage.  What a dolt.

And then we'd heard that the director didn't want to pay the extra $3000 to have Peter fly over the audience at the end of the show.  She (the director) also wanted to completely redo the flying choreography.  One of the Foys (an actual member of the Foy family) was supervising the flying and he told her something to the effect that he was in the room when this show was created and that he knew how the flying had to be done for this all to work.

When we did PETER PAN (about ten years ago), they brought in the flying company the week before tech.  Most of us had the first flying rehearsal off except for Peter and the children.  I decided to go down and watch the rehearsal.  I waited until they took a break and then I headed down to where the flying crew was talking.  I said, "Hi, my name is TCB and I am playing Hook.  I understand you are going to be flying me, as well."  My God did those guys turn pale.

After a couple of rehearsals, Stephen said, "Now I know why they always have women play this role."  It really hurt his "family jewels."
