Title: UP-TO-THE-MINUTE
Post by: bk on July 21, 2004, 12:00:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've seen the notes' minutiae, you're up-to-the-minute on the notes and now it is time to post until the up-to-the-minute cows come home.

I have no questions and no answers. There's a nice symmetry to that. Good-night.

Yes the notes are au courant!  Rehearsal update brings us right up to the minute.

Posts yesterday....DRROBIN (?) I also enjoy CARNIVAL STORY....Miss Anne Bancroft is blonde and looks nothing like a high diver....but I like to imagine that she is really Eve Harrington and this is the kind of movie she left Broadway to star in.  A German version was shot at the same time with (I think) Curt Jergens and Hildegarde Knef - and they can be seen sitting at a table & dancing in the wedding scene.  I love the "danger" music - and MB favorite Mr Steve Cochran is menacing in the extreme!

Question for BK. Are you aware of the two compilation CDs available from Raven Rrcords in OZ  - one of Jimmy Webb songs and  the other of obscure songs and performances of Bacharach material. Do you have either or both - are they worth buying. Much cheaper for me to buy direct than through Amazon of course.

I'll have to check - definitely don't have the Webb, but have a ton of obscure Bacharach.

This question is particularly for DRs JRand53 and Charles Pogue. What are the sources of the quotations you use ("Harry, I saw a satellite"; and Frank Loesser's on "the heart ...")?

Ask me no, questions and I'll tell you no lies.

I listened to the wonderful Janis Siegel, Sketches of Broadway, yesterday. I'm making my Friday report early. So sue me (a Frank Loesser reference). Great stuff! Boy, is she hot.

Kerry, if you hop in and out of here, thanks for the little note :-)

Jason, hope your job travails are working out.

'Morning. an early post, then a quick walk, then work. Will post intermitently during the day, depending on how my Server is behaving. (Adelphia comes tomorrow to troubleshoot.)
I hate to be a copycat, but believe it or not, I was kept up all night by some creature on the roof or the attic area. (Not a total copycat because bk's squirrel only appears around 5-ish to wake him up, as I recall). I am now totally zonked, but must carry on, brave little soldier that I am.

I knew this was coming a few days after my birthday (what a great birthday present to myself!), but look at what we're getting for such a cheap price:

Streeting on September 7th is the classic Murder on the Orient Express, which has been newly remastered in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and includes the new "Making Murder On The Orient Express" four-part documentary, the "Agatha Christie: A Portrait" featurette and the theatrical trailer. Retail will cost you a mere $14.95.

TomofOz and Jane, I enjoyed your discussion of Jimmie Rodgers! I am also a fan...great singer. Have either of you seen his film LITTLE SHEPHERD OF KINGDOM COME? I believe it is his only film role and he does a fantastic job in it! Two of my interviewees, Diana Darrin and Kenny Miller, are also in it and they had nothing but praise for Jimmie. I beliebe Kenny Miller is still in touch with him.

Wicked.  Yes, I know Chenoweth has left the building, but a well-written show should survive a change in actors.  And yes, I believe Wicked has a good score, not great but good, so part of the writing is there.  Plus the only "spectacular" shows I've seen have been in London or on the road, not on Broadway.  I'd like to see the Broadway people strut their stuff.

One of my absolute favorite Manhattan Transfer songs isn't really about food, but the word "food" is in the title:  "Soul Food To Go (http://www.tmtfanclub.com/brasil.html)."  It's funky, it's just a lot of fun! ;D The album Brasil (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002ILX/qid=1090420442/sr=1-10/ref=sr_1_10/103-4358801-4536629?v=glance&s=music) won a Grammy for Best Pop Peformance by a Duo or Group with Vocal!

For my senior recital in college, I wanted to have a theme that was different than most others and I tried having food theme.  When it came to finding songs, it wasn't that hard, but finding scenes from plays with good cuts and that didn't require a ton of props was difficult, so I abandoned it.  But someday...

Well, Mr. BKs CDs do get around. I'm listening to a BBC Radio 2 program right now and Mr. David Jacobs is playing a cut from Drat the Cat with Mr. Jason Graae. You're a hit in London BK, even if you've never been there.

Another great Manhattan Transfer song that's almost about food but not quite is Java Jive. It's one of the first MT songs I heard and made me fall in love with their music and performances.

Good morning! Good yawning!

Yesterday I discovered Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.

arghalaghraghalrgha

Today I plan on eating nothing but salad and other assorted "forget about the ice cream" foods.

My parents decided to go up to Quebec City for the day using their handy-dandy train passes and my grandmother just left for church and then lunch with her friends.  My sister is working at her wading pool.  So....

I AM ALONE AT HOME!!!! *DANCE DANCE DANCE*

Question for Ask BK Day: What is your favourite ice cream flavour?
Title: Re:UP-TO-THE-MINUTE
Post by: Stuart on July 21, 2004, 08:04:33 AM
Hmmmmm....food songs......

"Food Glorious Food," though not a favorite song, certainly fits the bill.
"A Little Priest," though not a food I would eat (no comments from the peanut gallery), also fits the bill.
"Ice Cream," though not about that treat directly, does impart the joy of the frozen confection.
And of course, my favorite from the land of chicken soup: "To Each His Consomme-ah"

But seriously folks.....

My question of the day, to BK and all other dear readers, is this:

I know that most of us feel that when one comes across a phrase or a word used in everyday conversation, it can trigger an association with a song, or even quotes from movies, etc.  (Peter Filichia talks about this sort of stuff all the time.)

Recently, I was flipping through a font catalogue, looking for interesting typefaces for my season brochure.  I came upon one that I have never liked (Brush Script), and I thought "No, that's the WHOREHOUSE logo font."  I came to another (I think it is Murray Hill) and thought "Nope.  A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC."  So my question is this:

Am I the only one that has strong associations between typefaces and show logos?

Well, right now I have no questions.  Maybe later.

I just finished watching the last film version of NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, and in some shots Dame Edna looks like Marian Seldes!  I enjoyed the movie a lot, which I thought was better than the same director's EMMA, which was  too pretty and a little coy for Jane Austen.  While I enjoyed it, I much prefer the A&E-BBC production with Kate Beckinsale.

Food songs:
Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy
Pie (Jerome Kern from "The Stepping Stones")
This Was a Real Nice Clambake
Ice Cream
A Little Priest
I Can Cook, Too
Chop Suey
Cause We Got Cake ("Too Many girls")
Remember that dreadful Gershwin song "Vodka" that Dorothy Loudon used to sing?  Does that count?
Cherry Pies Ought to Be You
Worst Pies in London
If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd Have Baked a Cake
Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries

Am I the only one that has strong associations between typefaces and show logos?

I don't have such a conscious association, but now that you mention it I know I strongly associate Tenderloin's typeface with that show. Mame's, also.

Typeface and overall design do make a lasting impression. I think the ugliest album covers - including typography -  are for Henry, Sweet Henry; and Promises, Promises.

A Little Night Music's typeface captures the spirit of that show, but it isn't my favorite either.

The following was e-mailed today to  members of the CASTRECL e-mail list (run by one time HHW interview subject Max Preeo):

Blakeslee and Minoff to Star in Kimmel-Directed Revue, What If?

By Andrew Gans

Bruce Kimmel, who produced dozens of theatre-related recordings for the Varese
Sarabande label, will direct a new musical revue next month in Hollywood.

Entitled What If?, the revue will begin performances Aug. 10 at the Hudson Main
Stage Theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard. Heading the cast are Forbidden
Broadway's Susanne Blakeslee and The Goodbye Girl's Tammy Minoff as well as Paul
Haber, Ryan Raftery and Alet Taylor.

The revue, according to production notes, is described as a "delicious romp of
musical parodies, plus songs written by cabaret and musical theatre songwriters
like Billy Barnes, Doug Bernstein and Denis Markell, Rupert Holmes, Tom Jones
and Harvey Schmidt, Leroy Anderson and Walter and Jean Kerr, Bruce Kimmel [and]
Mary Rodgers." The production answers such What Ifs as "What if Stephen Sondheim
wrote Bye, Bye Birdie and what if Rodgers and Hammerstein had written Assassins
and what if Frank Loesser had written The King & I?"

The creative team for What If? comprises Jose C. Simbulan (musical director),
Cheryl Baxter and Joseph R. McKee (choreographers), Eddie Adams (assistant
director), Melissa Ficociello (set designer), Amy Adams (costume designer),
Steven Pope (lighting designer) and Dale A. Cook (stage manager).

What If? will offer two preview performances Aug. 10 and 11 at 8 PM and will
then play Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM through
Sept. 12. Hudson Main Stage Theatre is located at 6539 Santa Monica Boulevard in
Hollywood, CA. Tickets, priced $15-$20, are available by calling (323) 960 7784.

I wasn't really involved at all.  The project came to me and I shepherded it, and also gave my opinion of the master they sent me and asked them to redo it to smooth out the sound levels from track to track.  It was Patti's deal all the way.

As soon as the previous article was e-mailed to the list, the following reply was posted:

Doesn't this count vaguely familiar.  Like maybe "The Musical Of Musicals"
recently at the York in New York?

Nothing like a fresh idea.

Brent

I countered with the following reply to the reply:

The two are totally different.  MUSICAL OF MUSICALS told the same story in
the style of five different songwriters.  The entire evening consists of
five mini musicals.  Bruce Kimmell's "what if"s (which have been posted on
various websites over the years but never performed before), spoof one
specific show with new lyrics set to the tune of a song from a show by
another composer.  Since each "what if" only lasts a few minutes, they are
more conducive to a revue format.

It seems that every time Bruce Kimmel's name is mentioned in an e-mail on
this list, someone has to make a derisive comment.  At least see this show
before knocking it.  Having read many of the "what ifs", I think you will be
pleasantly surprised.

I hope that's the only anti-BK reply I'll have to defend.

Typefaces from show albums can really become ingrained in your brain after awhile.

I'll never forget how wrecked I was with the typeface used for the movie of MY FAIR LADY. It just didn't seem to fit the classiness of the show. And then when the main titles come up on the screen, the title looked nothing like the typeface used on the soundtrack album.

WEL: You might also inform them that my What Ifs have been around long before The Musical of Musicals was a gleam in the eye of its creators - and what's to say they didn't read them and what's to say they weren't inspired by them in the same way that South Park's creators have been "inspired" by my Nudie Musical, right down to ripping off its most famous line for their film Orgazmo.

Good Morning!

Well, what a way to start the day off... I got a phone call from the person who sent me the e-mail a couple of weeks ago informing me that I was no longer part of an upcoming project... -All that unseemly and unpleasant business... yadda-yadda... Well, this morning - well, he actually left a message saying he'd try me back in the morning on my cell phone last night, but it didn't come up until this morning - he calls me back to tell me officially, in person (well, at least in voice), that he will be using someone else.  And, as I suspected, the whole decision was made a few months ago, but he just couldn't find the time to tell me until now.  ?!?!?!?!?!! Of course, I had been trying to follow up with him on a regular basis since March... ?!?!?!?!?!?!  In any case...  *Did that make sense?  Sorry for the run-on sentence fragments.

Not sure exactly how I feel about the whole thing... Well, I do... Just feeling lots of stuff... Pissed off... Frustrated... Kind of "oh, well..."... and still sad that I lost the gig... etc., etc., etc....  At least he knew I was in L.A., and he took into consideration the time difference when making his phone call so that he didn't end up waking me up at 6:00am.

And I also now know that it's just time to stop wanting to associate myself with that person/institution no matter how truly worthwhile my past dealings have been with them.  It's just not worth it.  So there!

Ah, well...

On the brighter side of things, I'm here in LA working with a bunch of wonderful people, on a wonderful new revue, and I'm having a great time all around.  And I've even been running into friends I haven't seen in years in the barely two weeks that I've been out here.

And speaking of work...

Laters...

Speaking of press releases... I was reading the one for R SHOMON which opens tonight up at Williamstown.  It's the new Michael John LaChiusa piece.  It's being directed by Ted Sperling who has been and still is quite a good musical director.  However, none of the press releases I've seen list the Musical Director for this show.

So, to sort of rectify this situation, I'd just like to say that the Musical Director for R SHOMON is Brad Haak.  He was the Conductor/Musical Director for the production of CHILDREN OF EDEN I just did at Ford's Theatre.

You would think that with a project as undoubtedly difficult and "tricky" as a LaChiusa musical, that the musical director would warrant some sort of mention.  Heck, if I can get can mentioned in the "What If?" press release... ;)

Break a leg, Brad!

Short day at work.  We were supposed to be getting a large truckload of goodies for the store, but the truck broke down.  Hence, no goodies.  Hence, no need for the extra staff to stay on all day.

Since my boss also had to discipline one of my co-workers today, it was just as well that I took off early.  Said boss appreciated all, and will be making up to me re the lost hours later on.

I didn’t know “Miss Rose White” was from a play.  I do know I liked the movie very much.  We haven’t watched it since it first aired.  Hmm, maybe we should again if it is now available on DVD.

Tomovoz do you still have the Jimmy Rogers 45?  I’m sure I also had an album of his.  I don’t know what happened to my records from when I was young.  All I know is I wasn’t the one to dispose of them.  >:(

Ann as far as I know it isn’t bad to eat after you work out.  I believe it is good for your muscles to drink lots of water.

Bruce you get the feeling from the photos that everyone in the cast likes each other and they are all having a good time.  It is nice to know it’s true. :)

Well my internet service has been hit and miss today....it may be the heat, I don't know!

ANYWAY....congrats to MR BK and JOSE and all those involved with What If? on your mention at Playbill.com   And boo to those naysayers on the other email site.

DiT - my quote comes from that classic film ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN....it is somewhat truncated and I will correct it on my birthday when my name changes to Jrand54.....the actual deathless line uttered by Miss Allison Hayes to William Hudson (and written by Mark Hanna):

"I saw a satellite tonight."

"Everyone's seeing satellites these days."

"Right in the middle of the road?  Harry, I almost hit it!"

My question for ASK BK day:

I didn't see an answer the other day.....isn't your theatre on Sunset Blvd near where the old ZIV Television studios used to be?  They were used as American International for the movie HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER.....

AND....do you have a proscenium or thrust stage?  And which do you prefer to direct on?

I don't remember where ZIV was - we're on Santa Monica Blvd. between Highland and Vine, right at the corner of Hudson.

It's kind of a proscenium thrust.  I like proscenium stages and always have.

I just wanted to take a minute to say I'll be E&T for the rest of the week. This is my trip to NYC week, and I'll be leaving mid-afternoon today. Will be back sometime Sunday evening. Looking forward to the shows, the food, and the sights and sounds of the city.

See you back here on Sunday.

Matt H.  I missed your birthday?  When was it.  I don't see it on the calendar.  Your profile says you are a Virgo, which is August 23 - September 22.  Please claify.

I've taken down The DVD Place - after three months of being promised that the switch to our new look and name would happen, the person who was to do it finally sent me an e-mail saying he was too busy, as was the person who was going to design it.  Three months ago had I had that info I might have been able to do something about it and find others to do the switchover.  But now, I'm too busy myself and we'll just continue to do our DVD thing right here.  So, as of today, I've had them remove The DVD Place.  I've asked that all the content be saved in case I want to do it at some point.

One day while I was at Goodspeed, during waits between charts, I used the Mac in the Music Office to go through all the recordings I did with Bruce that were available on the Amazon.com site.  I wanted to see what reviews the recordings got.  On UNSUNG MUSICALS I fond a pan by someone calling him(her?)self MISSGYDER, who claimed that the recording might have been all right except for the sleazy synthesized orchestrations!  So, last night I rebutted this person with a blurb "Missgyder is Misguided."  Now I'm ready to tell off the jerk on whatever other post is slandering my Dear Friend BK.  So, will someone please tell me how to find this "other" site?

It's not a site, it's an e-mail group.  From what I understand, several people have already come to my defense and told the "person" they were both incorrect and out of line.  I have no doubt that the "person" has not come back to apologize.  This particular e-mail group has a long history of two or three acolytes of Mr. Sher slamming me - it's what they do, but people come after them so fast they slowed down on the attacks.  You can only do agenda-laden things for so long before everyone catches on.

Keith says she looks as if she had a bad hair day.  She is soooo cute. :)

Keith just took her outside with him.  I hope she is dry by the time she comes back in.

Robin: Never say never, but not in the near future anyway.

Sad to report that the new Gidget set is indeed full frame, even the first Cinemascope film which looks horrid pan and scan (the titles are scope).  A real shame.  I just don't "get" Columbia at all.  They do some of the great DVDs of really obscure things like Bonjour Tristesse and The Swimmer, and they do them right despite those titles having limited appeal.  But Gidget they do Pan and Scan.  Someone needs to bitch-slap whoever is making these very occasional and very odd decisions.

SWW I don’t suppose you wanted to be around when your boss disciplined your co-worker.
Yes, I thought it might be best to put a little distance between us.  The co-worker can get highly in-your-face, and has been disciplined for that before this.  I didn't see any sense in tempting the fates and provoking another incident.  But the simple fact was, we had too many people at the store for the afternoon, and my leaving for the day helped us keep to our budget (and earned points with the boss).

Instead, I've brought home some study materials on cookware, so maybe I'll be better at answering questions on which pan is better than another.  I really don't like bluffing on answers, making guesses and passing the guesses off as facts.  I don't mind not being the best salesman on the team...but I'll be danged if I'm not going to make the others work to keep the current pecking order!

That unfortunatly is my least favorite, As a matter of fact I consider it one of the worse films I ever saw. I was five years old and it was one of the few films I was allowed to see in Montreal at time. At that age I thought it was dumb, stupid and boring. Not necesarily in that order.

Young children for  the longest time were not allowed to see movies because of a terrible fire where many children died. It wasn't unti the mid to late 60's where the restriction was lifted.

They have some way of taking the sound and faking it.  Sometimes, though, they manage to find the stereo music tracks, so the music portion can be real stereo.  They just spread it around as far as I can tell.  As far as the original mix, be it mono or stereo, once they change it it is no longer the original film - the mix has been altered from what the director and his sound people had originally done.  That's why the original mix should always be included.

From what I understand, it's because SAG got involved and insisted that these documentaries not be feature length or something.  So, they now break them up to avoid problems although I don't know that SAG prevailed in that particular bit of idiocy.

If they can restore films for home video why don't they restore the coming attractions or the behind the scene material as well?

It's not worth it to them to restore the ephemera.  Simply not worth the cost.

RE Paul Haber: He's certainly been around and is in Fear No Evil.  He was in the Joe Namath/Robert Morse Sugar at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 1978.

They have some way of taking the sound and faking it.  Sometimes, though, they manage to find the stereo music tracks, so the music portion can be real stereo.

I remember buying some LPs in the early seventies which were re-mastered mono recordings, processed into this horrible fake stereophonic sound.  It sounded muddy and distorted.

Luckily, there's been a lot of advances in remastering sound these days, but sometimes, these remastered movies sound terrible in their new versions.  I'm thinking specifically of Jurassic Park, which sounds utterly spectacular on the laserdisc, but isn't very good on the deeveedee.

Which brings up another Ask BK question:

Have you ever recorded (or wanted to record) a song or a CD in glorious, monophonic sound?

Ok, I have researched "What If" cast member Paul Haber...he played gang member # 1 on an episode of MANIMAL, was Cute Investment Banker in an episode of SEX IN THE CITY, was a regular on the soap AS THE WORLD TURNS in 1999, and in the TV series SUPERIOR COURT in 1988, and he had a co-starring role in the horror film FEAR NO EVIL in 1981...seems like a neat guy and my kind of actor!

Did I ever tell you how much I enjoyed your Jewish Thighs On Broadway?

No, Michael - but, jeez, I'm such a praise-junkie, it means the world to me to find out you read it and liked it! Thanks so much for letting me know... writing can be a lonely business. NEED that feedback. Yer a pal.

I would love to see the stage version sometime.
And i think the trips to Europe section of the book would be a movie in itself!!!

Send me your address at Malibran@aol.com, and I'll send you the DVD or video - your choice- of the dress rehearsal of last September's show at Seattle Fringe... with the proviso, of course, that if you have any friends in Florida theaters, you might allow me to use your name when I contact them with my promotional materials...

And I am working on another story, using the plot of those Europe chapters. Those actually HAD been another story, but I SO wanted to use them, so I put them in as part of the Jewish Thighs character's experience. Glad you like that, too!

Blame it on my "one Trek mind," but BK's mention of Sol Kaplan's excellent score for "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" got me to whip out my "Doomsday Machine" soundtrack CD and look Mr. Kaplan up on imdb.

The CD's liner notes make mention of the lull in Kaplan's career during the '50s.  He was blacklisted for refusing to name names for the HUAC.  Still, imdb lists more than fifty projects he scored.  It may only seem that he didn't do that many movie scores because his output was becoming less frequent during the time when soundtrack albums were becoming more popular.  Is that possible?

Anyway, his two scores for "Star Trek," the first season's "The Enemy Within" and the second season's "The Doomsday Machine" contained some of the finest, most stylish and cerebral music written for the series.  "Doomsday" in particular is memorable for its driving, throbbing theme for the menacing, funnel-shaped planet-eating device.

I liked The Candy Man better when Mr. Sondheim slowed it down and added some suspended chords.

A food song by Oscar Brown I like is Food-o-phobia.

I had a wonderful time at Junie B. Jones, the new Marcy Heisler/Zina Goldrich musical.  I think the choreographer should be canned, but, by about the third number, emotion kicks in and you just have to love it.  Good to see Michael McCoy one-up Harvey Fierstein.  And Mary Faber as Junie is a delight (she was the little girl "There Used To Be a Building" was sung to over two years ago.  Now's she's grown up to be a six-year-old.)

Strange to find that the best new musical scores in New York right now are either written for children (Junie B. Jones, Children's Letters To God) or a spoof thereof (Avenue Q)

I've Marcy's cell-phone number now, BK.  Do you still need it?  Did you end up using one of their numbers?

ASK BK QUESTION DAY #3

So many DVD now have "Documentaries" as part of their special editions.  Why do they break them up into separate documentaries or give you the oportunity to "PLAY ALL" If you chose the later you still have to watch multi opening and closing credits for each individual documentary.

Why not just make one long one with multi chapter stops so you can skip over the parts that do not interest you?
"Play All" is for the couch potatoes who don't have enough energy to press a remote button.

Think DR Noel's MIL, and her continual LOTR DVD watch while visiting Noel and DR Joy.

Frightening, isn't it.

(I'm just hoping she left DR Noel with more than her two cents worth.)

Der Brucer celebrates on the 8th of Aug, and I on the 17th.  We traditionally call the period between "Birthday Week."  This saves energy, because we don't have to shift out of celebrate mode during the week.

But der B looks much better in pantaloons than I do.  We've never figured out why.

During her 88 hours here, the mother-in-law helped herself to all sorts of food in the refrigerator, without asking, without being told she could.
Now we've discovered that, in using and cleaning one of our expensive wedding gift skillets (not from her; I don't think we got anything expensive from her), she scratched it and brillo'd off the non-stick surface.

I may be errant and truant soon, as I must attend some awful wedding in Cornwell Heights, wherever that is, and have long rehearsals for the Triad shows that will include DR Jenny, regaling us with a Finn tune.

A PS to DR Noel:

At some point, we (meaning ALL the DRs) should start collecting a list of songs that would be good for auditions, school performances, etc.  You can't be the only one advising students on material.  I've a hunch there are some lurkers out there who could use the advice, and we've got a great pool of knowledge here at HHW.

So, you might want to set some parameters, some guidelines, and then let us all loose to see what we come up with!

When you're ready, we'll be there for you.

I was thinking about a Marcy and Zina song, but the last time I had to deal with them it was just too difficult, so I pulled it and replaced it with something I wouldn't have ANY difficulty with.  I wish it weren't so, but I have no time to deal with people who in any way will be anything but forthcoming.  I also dropped Marcy an e several days ago, to which there has been no response, probably as she's been so busy with her show.

I'm sure that Jose will have A LOT of advice, parameters and guidlines to give in this area!

My number one rule for picking an audition song is:

"Sing something you know and that you love to sing."

Don't sing something you just learned. (Although some people have that knack...)
Don't sing something you think you should be singing.
Don't sing something just because it's worked for other people.
Don't sing something just because you heard someone else sing it.

There are songs you like.
There are songs you like to sing.
There are good songs.
There are good songs for you.
There are good songs for auditions.
There are good songs for auditions for you.

Know the difference.  For yourself.  Just because you like the song doesn't mean it will work for you.  Just because you like the song doesn't mean you should use it for an audition (maybe for a callback instead).

-As they say in Avenue Q, "It's a fine, fine line..."  Yes, it takes some trial and error to find the right material, but I've always thought that if there's any sort of negative stress and strain involved while finding and choosing and learning the material, then some of that "stuff" is bound to be projected in your audition.

I've seen many an audition where there is a sense of the singer singing "under duress".  They're just not enjoying themselves.  Yes, auditions are by their nature not a pleasant thing, but that doesn't mean they have to be dreaded.

And then there are the other considerations: style/period, appropriateness for the show you're auditioning for, finding the right 16 bars, acting, range, etc... But it all comes back to:

"Sing something you know and that you love to sing."

*And, actually - and sort of unfortunately - due to the run of What If? I will not be able to play the Fall SETC auditions in Charlotte, NC, this September.  Anyone out there know anyone who would like to and can play for about 250 people in two days? ;)
