Well, you've read the notes, the notes dreamed of Roquefort, and now it is time for you to post until the dreaming cows come home.

And the first of the two new Kritzerland releases is:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack and world premiere CD release of the complete score to:

MY GEISHA

Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman

Released by Paramount in 1962, My Geisha was a comic delight, thanks to a stellar cast that included Shirley MacLaine, international superstar Yves Montand, Robert Cummings, and Edward G. Robinson.  It featured a witty, colorful script by Norman Krasna.  In the director’s seat was Jack Cardiff, who’d started off as one of the greatest color cinematographers ever.   While his director credits never quite reached the heights of his cameraman credits, he helmed some wonderful films, including Sons and Lovers, The Lion, The Long Ships, Young Cassidy, The Liquidator and Dark of the Sun.  He also held the distinction of directing the only film ever made in the Smell-O-Vision process, Scent of Mystery.  The film received an Academy Award nomination for Edith Head’s gorgeous costumes.

But what takes My Geisha to a whole other level is the radiant score by Franz Waxman.  There are many ways to approach scoring a comedy: you can accentuate the humor, you can underline the laughs, or you can try to make the music comic.  Waxman’s approach was to score the story being told and to let the comedy speak for itself.  Hence his music is filled to the brim with dramatic scoring and beautiful melody, including his exquisite main theme.  That approach was perfect because it makes us care about the characters and the story.

Because the film is about a moviemaker making a film of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, there are also a few excerpts from the opera, conducted by Waxman himself.  Interestingly, he uses no Puccini references at all in his score.   Waxman seemed to have a real affinity for and love of Japan: My Geisha and his great score for Sayonara are musical proof of that.   Certainly his music here is as achingly beautiful as Puccini’s, making use of occasional Japanese tonalities, colors, and instruments.   It is music that’s rich and varied and music that works perfectly both within the film and as a stand-alone listening experience apart from the visuals. Waxman was one of the greatest of all film composers, and his work for Paramount was especially brilliant, with such films as Sunset Blvd., A Place in the Sun, Botany Bay, Elephant Walk, Stalag 17, Sorry, Wrong Number, Come Back, Little Sheba, and Career, to name a few.

My Geisha is making its CD debut and we’re very pleased to present the entire score.  The LP release left off several wonderful cues, but now we have the score complete, from the original three-track session tapes in glorious stereo sound.   We include the few integral Madama Butterfly selections and some bonus material.

My Geisha is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the last week of March but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Both releases will be live at six in the morning - if you want before then you know what to do.

Kritzerland is proud to present its latest release – a brand new CD by a beautiful and talented singer!

JULIANA HANSEN – LIVE AT STERLING’S UPSTAIRS AT THE FEDERAL

Juliana Hansen’s first CD, a live recording of her wonderful nightclub act, is an exciting, vital, and moving program of mostly show songs and some great standards.  Miss Hansen was seen in the national tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie in the title role, appeared on nationwide television on ABC’s Grease: You’re The One That I Want, and has done a lot of work for Disney Studios over the years, including her recent vocals on a Disney CD of lost Sherman Brothers songs and a series of Disney in Concert appearances all over the world.

The CD is filled with such enduring classics as “A Cockeyed Optimist,” a Disney Princess medley of favorites, including “Belle,” “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” and “A Happy Working Song” (she was the first person to ever perform the latter live), “Moon River” and two rare songs from the flop musical version of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, along with her amazing rendition of Thoroughly Modern Millie’s “Gimme, Gimme,” “Disneyland,” and a wonderful medley of Sherman Brothers songs, and lots more.

It was an electric evening at Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal with a rapturous reaction from the sold-out house.  Those who were there knew they were witnessing something very special, and now listeners can relive that experience with this CD.

Julina Hansen is produced by Bruce Kimmel, with musical direction by A.J. Robb.

The price is $17.98 (plus shipping).  CDs will ship by the last week of March – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

TOD:

Don't really miss any fashion trends. So, for a reverse, here's one I hope that never comes back: those horrible Bill Crosby sweaters from the 1980s.

As for food trends, I miss some old-fashioned desserts, such as a dense layered coconut cake or a poppy seed cake with a nutty filling and a creamy frosting.

Will have to think about the TOD.  Especially the food one.  I can, however, say I miss Roquefort Dressing for all of those who indulge.  I don't happen to be one of them, though I often wish I was.  It's a wonderful name and, I'm sure, a wonderful culinary tradition.  I've even checked in the supermarkets and NOTHING goes by that name any more.  Isn't that insane?  How does such a classy name disappear like that?

Here's a question right back at BK:  Is "Roquefort" but a memory at all of the jernts you frequent nowadays?  At Musso and Frank?  How about Joe Allen?  I think it needs to be brought back, by a restaurateur who can listen to reason, and who gets it.

As far as I know there is no restaurant in LA that serves roquefort dressing - although some research may be in order.
Title: Re: DREAMING OF ROQUEFORT
Post by: bk on February 25, 2013, 06:49:35 AM
Nope - a simple Google search tells the reason no one serves it anymore - you can thank the United States government as we can for so many stupid things: In 1999 they raised the tariff on Roquefort and other imported foods from Europe 100% because Europe refused to buy hormone injected beef from the US.  End of Roquefort dressing because a pound of Roquefort cheese costs around fifty bucks to get here.  Bravo US.  Perhaps they should think about reversing the tariff.  There also seems to be some question whether restaurants actually used real Roquefort cheese, but I'm here to tell you they did.  There was a big difference between Bleu and Roquefort.

BK,

I totally agree with you about the show last night.  BORING!

However, I did enjoy the numbers from LES MISERABLES and CHICAGO.

Much of the humor was in bad taste...and, worst of all, not amusing.

The funniest line of the night was Daniel Day-Lewis' Margaret Thatcher quip.

I gave up on the Oscars at about 10:00, right after Anne picked up her award.  I didn't think it was a horrible show but there wasn't enough going on that warranted missing a good night's sleep before a Monday.  While I found a good deal of Seth McFarland's material funny (the Von Trapp Family bit actually made me laugh out loud), I don't understand why he needed to occasionally go so tasteless.  He also has a wide misogynistic streak.

I agree with BK that the highlight of the evening was Shirley Bassey knocking "Goldfinger" out of the park.  And yet, who gets a standing ovation?--Jennifer Hudson with her overamplified, autotuned and underwhelming "And I Am Telling You".  Feh!

Low point (aside from the Lincoln joke) was Paul Rudd and Mary McCarthy doing God-knows-what they think they were doing.  I agree with Rex Reed on McCarthy--the woman's only schtick is her weight.

Interesting.  Instead they should have outlawed hormone injected beef here.

Well, the cinemascope on page 2 made that impossible to read, so if I missed anything important, i apologize.

I think we are ready for the SUPERMAN orchestra reading on Monday and my Encores! work is finished for this round. Tomorrow, I'm back to Madame Roberta and "Lovely To Look At."

My 3:30 meeting cancelled, so we moved that to Wednesday afternoon and I headed home.  I stopped in the corner market, and I swear there are a lot of stupid asses who shouldn't be allowed to be parents.

I agree with BK that the highlight of the evening was Shirley Bassey knocking "Goldfinger" out of the park.  And yet, who gets a standing ovation?--Jennifer Hudson with her overamplified, autotuned and underwhelming "And I Am Telling You".  Feh!

I didn't watch as far as Jennifer Hudson, however, I do recall Shirley Bassey receiving a standing ovation.

TOD: Clothing-I would like to see a return to popularity of shoes without insanely high heels. One of the actresses on the red carpet last night said she was wearing 9 inch heels. If you stepped on an uneven surface, seems like you would snap your ankle in half! I blame the porn industry for making this a requirement to look sexy. These shoes weren't made for walking!

TOD, continued--

Still thinking about foodstuffs I wish would come back.  But that actually ties in so strongly with foodstuff VENUES I wish would come back, that I shall list a few.  I miss the ubiquitous cafeterias we grew up with in the 1960s.  And speaking of ubiquitous, the Howard Johnson's chain (now that I'm old enough to appreciate it!).  And Royal Castle, a White Castle imitation (but unique and wonderful in its own right) that flourished mostly in the South, I think, but there was at least one in Cleveland.  In fact, I'd have to say that Royal Castle is one of my Rosebuds, food-wise.

And I really mourn the dearth (and death) of true coffee shops.  Yes, there are still plenty of them out there, along with the somewhat equivalent northeast "diner" variant.  But the ones we've lost, someone should have hanged for it:  the three Ship's in Los Angeles.  Coffee Dan's, of course, which I apparently was privileged to discover and eat in a few times just before it vanished.  Mr. D's in Marina Del Rey.  I could name a few in my other home towns, but the names (if I could remember the names) wouldn't mean anything to anyone else.

Some thoughts about last night's singing:

Shirley Bassey:  I was a bit distraught that she seemed to favor only her lower register.  I feared the worst....until she hit those last notes.  She obviously had been "saving" her voice for the money notes.   I was very glad for her.  Good show!

Jennifer Hudson:  I'm not fond of the arrangement, but she was powerful.  Sorry many of you did not think so.

Barbra Streisand:  I thought it unusual that they would linger over Marvin Hamlisch. It seemed to say he was the most important of all they managed to memorialize (to the exclusion of such folks as Andy Griffith).  But...the song and the singer are so inextricably linked to Hamlisch and his Oscars for song and score ("The Way We Were") that it was more than forgivable.  And Streisand has powerful pipes.

The "Les Mis" number:  Loved it.

I totally disagree with what BK said last night re: Kristin Chenoweth.  I did not watch all of the Red Carpet on ABC. But what I saw of her I loved. Maybe she got better as the show went on. But I thought she was very sweet to the people she interviewed. She seemed to know about their movies. She made them feel comfortable. I loved her. I also enjoyed Lara Spencer but could have done without any other interviewers (dislike when there are so many).

I also loved Kristin's closing number. I thought she was great!  I don't think it can be bad if 1 billion people now know who you are.

Different strokes, as they say.  I love Miss Chenoweth as a person.  I thought she did not come off well last night, and I'm certainly not alone in that assessment.  But I'd guess you loved her long before the Oscars and that she can do no wrong in your eyes - you're not the only one to feel like that, either.

The academy has a committee which goes over the lists.  The claim they have to make hard choices and eliminate some folks, perhaps because they weren't as well-known for their movies as much as they are known for their TV appearances.

They tend to show a lot of folks no one "out here" has much knowledge of.  Given the time factor (i.e., they always go OVER), they could include all the names without any problem.   TCM Does this sort of thing SO much better!

Sounds like they left out a lot of people, especially those who started in movies but did a lot of TV work, such as Larry Hagman and Lupe Ontiveros. They'll never get those things right, but, seriously, there are numerous places online that log which celebrities died in the preceding year. You'd think they would use something like that.

Custard pie.  No one ever makes custard pies anymore.

Not true.  My Aunt Doris made one at Christmas (primarily for my cousin Butch, her first-born, but she still let me have some).

:D

How was it?

Oddly, Johnson's frozen custard pie was rather good.   When we lived in Michigan one of the markets sold a delicious custard pie and I haven't seen it since.

It was good-ish.  I was "off the sweets" at that time, unfortunately.  Had no taste for them much.  This was the gestation period for my pneumonia!

I can image though I might have found the custard part soothing.

Last night we watched a 1958 movie we think should have been nominated for director & best film, THE BIG COUNTRY.  Worthy was the best supporting actor award to Burl Ives.

There are many moments of quiet when far more is conveyed than sound, action, or words could thanks to the fine directing and the superb acting.

The flawless cast includes Gregory Peck, Jeanne Simmons, Caroll Baker, Charles Bickford, Chuck Connors, Alfonso Bedoya, and Charlton Heston.  Yes, even Heston was good.

Of course, one very good thing about last night's Oscars was that they DIDN'T do the tributes to the best actors and actresses as they announced those winners.  That idea was a pretty bad one.

That was a real relief. I hope that idea is gone for good. It seemed very "reality TV" driven.

How nice to see DR Edi here!

I read this morning that Andy Griffith was not mentioned in the memoriam tribute, along with others.  Really, who decides which actors are included and are they all too young to remember his fine movie career?
Sounds like they left out a lot of people, especially those who started in movies but did a lot of TV work, such as Larry Hagman and Lupe Ontiveros. They'll never get those things right, but, seriously, there are numerous places online that log which celebrities died in the preceding year. You'd think they would use something like that.

I think that they could've shown/featured Marvin Hamlisch when Barbra started to sing, but then continued with more people for the rest of the song...just my 2¢.

I agree with Ron.  I loved Bassey, Hudson, and Streisand.  I also Loved the LES MIZ number; and I even enjoyed "All That Jazz."

Last night I watched most the Oscars sitting in my recliner.  Nicky loves to curl up on my lap when I am in the recliner.  Unfortunately, I don't sit there very often because it is kind of a risky move getting from the wheelchair into the recliner,

Anyway, during the show, Nicky got up and went over to his drinking fountain on the other side of the room.  He was walking back to the recliner when Cathereine Zita Jones started singing "All That Jazz."  Nicky stopped in his tracks and looked up at the big screen.  He must have watched about a minute before he stopped watching and came back to the chair.

Maybe they should drop it if they can't include everyone.  It would be very easy to cut out a few jokes and add the extra names.  It is just wrong when they leave people out.

I thought the "In Memoriam' section was handled very nicely last night.  I think the fact that George Clooney was asked to announce it shows that the Academy were trying to put more importance to the segment and to improve over the last few years where they have messed up.

Had a fun but very difficult rehearsal today.  Most of the difficult part stems from the charts, which are, in most cases, just not very good - our poor musical director has really had to work hard, but we still had a ton of problems trying to match the music to what I'd sent the singers, which sometimes differed from what I sent the pianist because it was easier to hear the vocals on what I sent to the singers - I think we got it all straightened out - when everyone's a little more together I think this is going to be a really fun show.  Now, back to my movie and wacky noodles.

I've never been a fan of Key Lime pie...I love a little lime juice in my diet Pepsi (or even diet Coke), but not the pie.  I don't know why.

I always enjoy the Oscars, when I watch it...however, I didn't watch it last night. I would have watched it for sure if'n I had seen more of the films that were up for awards.

George - I don't suppose you would have happened to have  recorded the Oscars?

DR Vixmom, I'm not sure where, but I heard this morning that the entire broadcast is available for viewing on the web.

Vixmom, if that's good enough for you, just let me know and I won't send a disc...but if you want a disc, let me know, too. :D

Thanks !  I will try and  find it =on the web so I do not have to trouble you

Just heard from Dolores' son that she had a full hip replacement this afternoon and that the surgery went well. He hasn't seen his mom yet. I would imagine she's still under the affect of the anesthesia.

Rapid Recovery Vibes for Delores and she remains in my prayers!

And yet they included Michael Jackson when he never did a movie, not that I know of anyway.

He was in The Wiz
