Title: AUDIO BOOKS
Post by: bk on February 26, 2013, 11:13:09 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of audio books, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently auditioning to read audio books for cows.

I got creative yesterday and put together this music video of a song I wrote back in the mid-1980s with Michael Silversher, who also does the vocal. Enjoy!

When I first saw MIDNIGHT LACE on Frances Farmer Presents - I thought Roddy McDowell was the culprit.....then I thought Herbert Marshall was the culprit....  For some reason, when I was eleven, I didn't think the leading man could be the bad guy.  And then there was that mysterious boyfriend of the neighbor that we never saw but always wrote letters.....

Good morning, all!  I am stayng in today. Before I headed out to the eye doctor yesterday, my stomach was behaving quite badly. The late afternoon and evening were worse, so I cancelled all plans today and decided to stay in. We'll see if what I had yesterday was a mild form of food poisoning or some virus floating about.

I will work on the ROBERTA libretto and have a liesurely, quiet day.

And today's good news: Diana Montague, one of England's leading singers, will play Aunt Minnie on the recording.

I watched NCIS last night - and Ducky (David McCallum) and his young assistant carried almost half the show.  They are definitely better when they just have conversations here and there.  The scenes with them seemed interminable.

We had a crazy evening of sleet last night, for what seemed like several hours.  I could hear it throughout the house.  Fortunately, miraculously, it was all rain this morning, with no mix or ice or anything at all on the roads or sidewalks.  Very strange.  But I shall not look a gift horse in the mouth.

Interesting discussion in the notes about audio books.  Do any DRs listen to them? I don't think I've ever listened to one before. I see a lot of avid readers on blogs who listen to them instead of reading the book.  I think it might be interesting to take a book you like and then listen to the audio recording. But I would find it very weird to listen to the book instead of reading it and then review it.   I mean if you review it totally as an audio book fine.

I've only listened to a handful of audio books over the years, but I love them.  I mostly listen when on long drives, so that's why I don't hear nearly as many as I'd like.  But having a book read to you, as long as it's done really well, is totally rewarding, and just about as good -- maybe I shouldn't even qualify that -- just AS damned good as reading it on the page.

I read a lot of books with my ears.  Started using audiobooks when I had a long commute to and from work and now I use them when I exercise on the treadmill and NuStep, when I knit, and when doing mindless household tasks.

The reader makes all the difference and often I'll choose to listen to something because it's read by one of my favorite voices - Kate Reading, Orlagh Cassidy, C. J. Critt, Grace Conlin.  Once I started listening to Willa Cather's My Antonia, narrated by some woman who was awful.  When I found the same book narrated by George Guidall, I was much more satisfied.  Richard and I got to be in the studio when he was recording Nathaniel Philbrick's book about the Mayflower.  Fascinating process to watch.

Jim Dale's recordings of the Harry Potter books are brilliant!

Post by: John G. on February 27, 2013, 09:31:21 AM
Love my audio books. I agree with DR Ginny on Jim Dale reading the Potter books. Superb.

I prefer Stephen King on audio to reading him. And I love reliving old favorites by listening to them. I recently listened to Middlemarch and, before that, Anna Karenina. Listening to them provided a different insight into the works.

Right now, I'm listening to Lou Diamond Phillips read Tom Wolfe's latest, "Back to Blood." I think his reading is better than Wolfe's ocassionally overblown prose.

Crappy afternoon.

Yesterday morning, I woke up with a congested sensation in my throat.  As the day wore on, the sense of an oncoming "chest cold" seemed ominous.

Last night, I had a nice hot bowl of homemade beef-vegetable soup and went to bed early (after taking some cold medicine).

This morning, I woke up feeling no worse than I did yesterday.

However, things have deteriorated and I'm feeling the cold settling in.

On top of all this, folks here in the office are dragging their feet on "rush" projects and quibbling over insignificant word choices/sentence structure...and then opting for the grammatically incorrect choices.

My last nerve is defying someone to step on it.   I've let some folks know I may not be in tomorrow and if anything is left hanging they're just going to have to deal with it.

You know what's funny?  Here's what's funny - I've never had a bagel in NY that I liked as much as the bagels I get here.  Go know.

That doesn't surprise me at all.

I think the NY Bagels in Michigan tasted more like the bagels in LA than the ones I had in NY.  When we moved to Connecticut a neighbor from Long Island took me to LI to shop and to stop for bagels for me.  I was shocked how disappointed I was.  The next time she took me to a better, as in she figured more to my liking, bagel place and I was happy.

I am trying to decide whether to read my most anticipated book of 2013 while I am sick. Or wait.

I think I have 3 other library books, one of which is shorter and will probably be an easy read.

I did not feel like reading yesterday or the day before.  :(

But finished the book I was reading today.

Not if they are good.

Keith describes a good bagel as dense & chewy on the inside & crisp on the outside.

I watched NCIS last night - and Ducky (David McCallum) and his young assistant carried almost half the show.  They are definitely better when they just have conversations here and there.  The scenes with them seemed interminable.

I thought it was a welcome change from the usual.  I love everyone on that show, so having Ducky and Jimmy carrying the episode didn't bother me.

I got creative yesterday and put together this music video of a song I wrote back in the mid-1980s with Michael Silversher, who also does the vocal. Enjoy!

Second rehearsal much smoother than the first.  Caitlynne is still fighting a cold and has very little voice but hopefully she'll be fine by Friday's stumble-through.  One gal still doesn't have any of her lyrics down,, but she's the same gal who came in three days before the last show to replace a performer and she learned all that so I'm not concerned although I did tell her she had to go home and nail them down.  The show itself is really fun, I think - lots o' laughs and then some surprising heart.

Health vibes that you feel better soon, Ron!

Well, I must be off.  I need to go to The Home Depot and get some wood screws.  The gate in my back fence has a couple of loose boards and I just need to screw them back together.  I'll also have to borrow my sister's drill.  It doesn't need to look pretty...it doesn't now, anyway.  It's an old fence and it'll be a while before it can be replaced.  I'd need to share the cost with the owners of the units on each side of me, and one owner has abandoned it. :P Anyway, this temporary fix will be quick and easy.

Be back later.

I have this fear of letting my mind wonder and losing my place.  I would give on a try for a road trip if Keith were interested.  I often find the library doesn't have an eBook but it does have an audio version to download.

Your library makes you download the audio books.  I would think that would take up a lot of space.

Jane, I just finished typing up the recipe for the custard pie that I will make this weekend. What's interesting is that one of the variations the author suggests is a sugarless custard in which you add a little more cinnamon and nutmeg to the egg mix. I like the sounds of that. I may not go whole hog the first time I try it, but I may cut the sugar in half.

That is indeed my friend Ben! He's wonderful in the Branagh film of THE MAGIC FLUTE.

Does Mr. Davis need a dresser for the recording?

So this actress I posted about last night, the one who felt it necessary to tell the world she was taking an indefinite leave from Facebook - something she threatened to do two weeks ago and didn't - has already made a post this evening - clearly not going anywhere.  She completely ignored my post to her, but others "liked" it because I was right - if you say you're leaving, leave.  These constant cries for attention are so silly.

DR Elmore, thank you for the wonderful gift!  I was delighted to find it in my mailbox today.

You are quite welcome!

Lord, I wish this congestion and my endless throat hoarseness would go the HELL away - I am so bored of it.  It makes me feel that I'm not quite better and it's been three damn weeks already.  I'm still blowing out mucus, still have phlegm and I have a lot of talking to do on Saturday evening.

It is one thing if it is just hanging on, but if you start getting worse again; then immediately get to a doctor.  They have warned people on the news several times in this area.
