Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of being finally cast, and now it is time for you to post until the finally cast cows come home - one of them is playing Mazeppa in Gypsy, the MOOsical.

Good morning, all!

I wish I'd stayed in bed longer, and I could have today, but I am up and about. I have little to do this morning before I head to Lincoln Center around noon. I have a couple of hours' research at the NYPL there and I look forward to seeing friends as well.

Of the really popular singers, there's some of Katy Perry's songs, and of course the person who seems to have made a new career of winning every award in sight whether she should or not - Adele.  One of the Times writers said he's sure there's a law in california that when Adele is nominated, it's against the law for Adele not to win.  :)

Adele catapulted to a phenomenon (despite being really good, IMHO, which normally shouldn't be a barrier) by being an ordinary-looking "be yourself' kind of gal.  Did I ever post this Youtube tribute to the Vogue spread, where Vogue airbrushed even normal-gal Adele into looking like a super-model, pretty much defeating the whole point of why people loved Adele so much?

"Rolling in the Deep" spoof about Adele's Vogue magazine spread

Good morning, all.

Loved that Adele spoof, FJL. But I don't care for Adele's material and haven't listened to much of anybody lately. We had to listen to Taylor Swift occasionally when I worked for the census and her work was performed on every channel most any time of day. It was not pleasant, though her voice is not as horrible as her material is.

I have Adele's cd.  I listen to it when i'm not in the mood to be upbeat.  Usually involving boyfriend problems.  It snaps me out of my gloom by the time the cd is over.   I'm just not that into being moody over a guy.

I think that makes sense.

I sometimes almost hear Adele singing "Let the Skyfall" as "Let this guy fall" because of her history of singing about how badly some men have treated her- but she did the SKYFALL theme after she was happy already.. :)

But she and the guy she wrote the 10-million-selling album about are friendly again.

It's the guy she wrote her earlier album about that she's still upset with, the album that was successful but not a mega-hit.

At leastm taht's what the gossip is.

Back from the mall. Browsed in the bookshops and in HMV (most of the chain is still in business awaiting a buyer - apparently Walmart are now interested!). Had a cheese and ham toasted sandwich for lunch. The good thing about visiting the mall is that I get lots of exercise from walking miles backwards and forwards!

Woke at 3:44 a.m. and tossed and turned for at least an hour and half.  I must find a good nap time later in which to make up that sleep, since it refused to happen this morning.

Totally agree about Celine Dion -- for me, a splendiforous example of no "there" there.

But there are, of course, popular singers who I catch here and there in a particular context who are just fine.  When the whole world was going on and on about Adele being chosen to do the title song for SKYFALL, I had no idea who that was.  I'd never heard the name.  And that's not meant to be derogatory at all.  I just don't follow that world.

And followers of SMASH in its first season will likely recall that Adele's song RUMOUR HAS IT (which Jrand posted) was the song for one of the truly memorable SMASH dance sequences:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpP_0awEsEk

memorable for SMASH in I think a good way, for all the dancers involved.

BK, I am as clueless as you re: current pop music.  I probably dropped out of the top forty/pop scene (do they still have the top forty?) somewhere in the mid-seventies (or earlier) and, except for some oddities like Tom Waits (who was never pop or top forty), have had no interest in the current music scene since then. Even most of today's Broadway show music leaves me cold. I've rarely heard of any of the singers or bands who appear on SNL, never listen to the stuff in the car, could care less about the Grammys or any other music awards.

TOD:

The only current pop singers/groups I am familiar with, and that I really enjoy, are from India, Pakistan, or assorted middle eastern countries, so....Hisham Abbas, Amr Diab, Strings, Diljit Dosanh, Nancy Ajram...those are a few of my favorites.

As for current English language pop music, I have heard so little of it that I can't really make a judgement. Much of the "dance" pop sounds nice, and is rather similar to those listed above...except in English.

A lot of today's Broadway show music leaves me cold, too.

Of course it takes time for something to grow on one -- sometimes.  But even when it does, there still isn't the supreme pleasure of going back and discovering any (pick one) of the multitude of, say, pre-1980s shows I don't know, and having them excite from the first.

Thank you DR MBARNUM.  I am looking forward to the oddities.

I have only completed the first disk of WEST POINT - but it is most entertaining.  I see that Lawrence & Lee are the script consultants....they have many Broadway/movie credits.....  And one of the episode writers is Gene Roddenberry......

Last night I saw Barbara Eden and Corey Allen in separate episodes - when she was backing a 1956 Dodge convertible out of a driveway, Barbara almost took out a few parked cars......

At first I thought host Cadet Charles C. Thompson (or Townsend) was a real cadet....until I started looking at the credits and realized it is Donald May - who was later in THE ROARING 20's and THE EDGE OF NIGHT.

And Leonard Nimoy when he was young - looks VERY MUCH like Zachary Quinto....it is uncanny.

FJL, it was a late booking once I got there, for one of the holes I had in my schedule.  So I took the night I could get.  The actresses, both fine, alternated parts in this three-hander.  Kristen Scott Thomas played the wife  the night I saw it; Lia Williams the friend.  Both are so good, it really wouldn't have mattered to me.

I saw Quartermaine's terms at Williamstown Theatre Festival a few years ago, starring Jefferson Mays.  What a fine play.

Ben Brantley (in another of his Times reports from London) did an article drawing parallels between the fact that both Rupert Everett in JUDAS KISS and Rowan Atkinson in QUARTERMAINE'S TERMS spend a large part of their time onstage sitting.  I hadn't noticed that as a key element in the role at Williamstown, so i wonder if it's a choice made for Atkinson's performance.  (maybe for a "contrast" with his normally active Bean)

I don't recall a lot of activity in Quartermaine's Terms, but it's been more than 30 years since I saw it at Actor's Theater of Louisville. And I think it was the lack of activity, combined with electric writing, that made an impression on a fairly young theatergoer.

I'll have to do my London report in segments over several days. FJL, I love QUARTERMAINE'S TERMS (I'm a big fan of Simon Gray, in general) ever since I saw a televised version of it back in the eighties with Edward Fox playing Quartermaine.  He also originated the role onstage.  This production directed by Richard Eyre, a director I much admire, was a lovely production with a terrific cast.  Sadly, the weakest link in it for me was Rowan Atkinson, who I have always adored as Blackadder.   He could not erase the memory of Edward Fox for me in this role and somehow missed the poignancy the character has always produced for me.

It's true both Atkinson and Everett sit a lot in their seperate roles...and, perhaps, it is a tribute to Everett that he can hold the stage just sitting.  His Oscar Wilde was mesmerizing and this play and his performance were one of the best things I saw.  Freddie Fox (Edward Fox's son) was also very good as Bosie.  We saw him a couple of years ago in a production of FLEA IN HER EAR at The Old Vic (he played Camille with the cleft palette, for those who know the play) and we knew then he was a young actor to keep an eye on.

John G.  THE AUDIENCE with Helen Mirren turned out to be high on my list of favourites as well.  It was surprisingly good.  I say "surprisingly", because I feared this play might be a tourist trade piece with both Mirren and Peter Morgan the writer capitalizing on their movie success with THE QUEEN.  With two such talents I should have known better.  It was a rich, insightful piece.  And she gave a smashing performance.  TRELAWNEY OF THE WELLS interested me because I am a theatrical archeologist who is always fascinated by the obscure, the forgotten, the rarely done.  And it was also playing at the Donmar Warehouse, a favourite venue of mine.  The play, I felt, showed its age with a bit of a rocky start in the first scene, but picked up steam, and I had quite an enjoyable experience by the end of the play.  It is a slight Victorian comedic piece by Pinero, but enjoyable for what it is.   I don't think it's as good a play as, say, his THE MAGISTRATE.  Also Patrick Marber did some " most respectful additions and ornamentation" to the piece, so I don't really know whether these helped or hurt it.

I'm not sure this is an extraordinary season...or at least the two weeks I was there...I've been there when the available plays I felt were much more exciting.  With the exception of a couple of things at the National, I saw every straight play that was pretty much available which says something about the season right there.  Shaftsbury Avenue is still over-run and booked with long-running but essentially clapped-out musicals, often of the jukebox variety.  Sorry, but I don't consider things like THRILLER and STOMP and ROCK OF AGES and LET IT BE real musicals, let alone real theatre.  Also, while it's nice to see terrific actors like Helen Mirren onstage,  I can remember a time when the West End was not so dominated by the need for movie star or tv names.  You could see people who might be terrific actors but were hardly household names in terrific plays.  It was certainly not the worst selection of plays I've seen over the years; nor was it the best.  But overall, it was eminently satisfactory.

(I still have ringing in my ears the question of whether to see FOLLIES or ON A CLEAR DAY in NYC being posed by an out of towner as "Should we see Bernadette Peters or Harry Connick" - but at least it meant tickets were being sold to live theater.)

Hey everyone.  Sorry I've been E&T the last few days.  It's been a crazy few days.  I'm going to share some info with you that I'm not sharing with my "other' online family.  Went to the Dr, my blood sugar and blood pressure is up.  All can be controlled by diet and exercise.  And since I don't plan on relying on medication for the rest of my life, I began exercising and really reading labels.  MAKING myself find time at least an hour to day to walk, ride my bike, go to the gym, etc.  Something that has to be done and I'm good with it.  I've also been experiencing tension headaches, which could be caused by many things, one being caffeine which I stopped pretty much on Sunday.  The Dr also suggested I see a behavioral therapist, which I'm more than happy to begin doing and the appointment has been made.

So, there you have it.   I'll try to be around more....   And these are the days of our lives

FJL, I see London becoming more like Broadway slowly over the years with more tourist musicals and obsessing for names much more than it used to be.  It used to have more plays than musicals, then for a period it was about half-and-half, now I'd say musicals are starting to tilt the scales a bit more.  It seems to me, it still has much more serious theatre in its main theatres and its new plays and playwrights are better.  It also takes a risk on old stuff.  Are we really going to see a major revival of CAPTAIN OF KOPENICK or TRELAWNEY OF THE WELLS on Broadway anytime soon?  It's also good that both the National Theatre and the RSC produce serious straight work in the enirons of the West End and London.  One time on a trip I saw JUNO & THE PAYCOCK by O'Casey, SUMMERFOLK by Maxim Gorky, SONG AT TWILIGHT (with Vanessa and Corin Redgrave) by Noel Coward, A PENNY FOR A SONG by John Whiting, MONEY by Bulwer-Lytton, and TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE by John Ford (with Jude Law).  All playing to capacity or sell-out business.  It seemed to me that I could never see those six unique plays playing anywhere in NY or LA (or anywhere individually across the country) within a year's time let alone all during the same period in one week.

I didn't notice her ears so much....I was too fixated on the hunky actor playing her boyfriend.

I have not seen these movies for more than thirty years.

I had purchased Super 8 versions of Earth VS The Spider and The Amazing Colossal Man.  I wrote a script around them that starred  my family.....and I intercut scenes from those movies into it.....not sure that they will copy the scenes from the real movies.....but we shall see....  We might be having the premiere of our SPIDER movie on DVD tonight.

I really liked that number, too.  One of my favorite SMASH musical numbers was the "A Thousand and One Nights (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTXLK4qq5TU)" Bollywood number that they did. :D

Heard two auditions today for Hofstetter.  Fascinating.  Both were good, neither quite captured the rhythm of the writing and dialogue and neither quite captured Adriana herself, which, for me, is the key to doing these.  I'll assume I'll know when it's right when I've heard the right one.  Then I began to think what if I just did it - I've certainly done readings that way and it worked, but with these books I just think young readers will respond more if it's a young-sounding Adriana-like voice.  When I get closer to finding what I like, then maybe what I'll do is send the final candidates me reading four pages and narration and dialogue with the right rhythms, and have them try to make that their own - I just think it will help them understand the way I write and how it sounds best.  This is tricky and really difficult work.

DR Pogue -

It looks like London at least has not made theatergoers victims of the insane premium pricing $400 ticket structure - yet.

I found it interesting that Vanessa Redgrave starred in an off-Broadway play with Jesse Eisenberg in the Village, and la good number of articles (such as Playbill here) used Jesse Eisenberg's photo

FJL, tix are still fairly reasonable in London, but they've steadily risen and I blame the blockbuster musicals for it.  And some theatres are also now selling some seats with the best views in the stalls and circle as "premimun seats, which usually cost another ten-fifteen pounds more than a regular seat in roughly the same area.  So it is sadly slowly adopting all of Broadway's bad habits.

Had a very irritating call with Ontrac - they just profess not to care that our driver has arbitrarily made us his last commercial stop of his day (package STILL isn't there, even though another amazon package IS there and was delivered via UPS by one).  I told his whiny woman that seven months ago I obviously had made a difference, since the yahoo who is our delivery person began switching it up and getting there earlier occasionally - I should probably have just gone directly to a supervisor as I'd done last time, and I may call back tomorrow and do exactly that.  She suggested complaining to amazon since they've given Ontrac from eight to five to deliver to commercial addresses.  I told her my complaint was with Ontrac because they've obviously chosen the five rather than the eight.  I then did call Amazon and got a nice fellow on the phone and told him I was kind of at the end of my rope.  He's going to file a complaint about this with his superiors - he said he didn't know how much control they'd have over Ontrac and I explained to him with the kind of money they're throwing at Ontrac they have nothing BUT control.  But I said, just ship all my stuff by UPS and we'll never have a problem - don't know that that can happen, but he's noted that wish in my account profile.

Got a supervisor who, unlike the whiny woman, was helpful and who assured me that by Thursday we'd be seeing a change in delivery time - he said he saw my previous complaint and that the facility had talked to the driver back then, and he could also see the history of package delivery in the last three to five weeks and he understood the driver had gone back to his old ways of making us last.  He said that Ontrac is not going to put up with such late delivery as a matter of course, and I believe him since the last supervisor was able to do something about it.

VIBES!!!

Ate some fruit (pineapple, melon balls, and apple slices) and then some of those little frozen tacos for my snack.  With lunch it's still under 1200 calories, plus I did the two-mile jog.
