Title: AT THE BALLET

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ballet-like, and now it is time for you to post until the balletic cows come home.

LOL, also up early.

Actually, I got to sleep early last night for some reason, so i got a full night's sleep - and anyway, Dylan decided he'd like breakfast and when he saw me stirring, placed his and Toby's food order.  (He must be on an early schedule anticipating BK's very early morning flight tomorrow.)

Lucky Dylan and Toby got right back to sleep even after having a full breakfast.  :)

I had my full breakfast also.

Oatmeal, walnuts, dried cherries and cinnamon and coffee.

Now I'm at the office about to begin another day, another dollar.

It's 28 degrees in New York City. Be careful out there.

I was hoping to listen to Larry's Eileen interview today since I was unable to do it yesterday. I don't think that's gonna happen. I've been all over both Dress Circle's blog and WWFM and I don't see the program in any kind of archive. Perhaps it will be up later in the week but it's not up now. I don't know that they archive this one because I can't find any WWFM Sunday Opera broadcasts on the Web site. That's the program title for Larry's interview. The only shows listed at the Dress Circle page at WWFM are from January of 2013

Dress Circle (http://www.wwfm.org/webcasts_dress_circle.shtml)

The regular Dress Circle Blog has nothing related to Eileen other than what Larry posted yesterday. There is no link to the Eileen interview/broadcast.

The Nutcracker (my 1st)

and my favorite:

The Who's Tommy. This is before the movie or any other stage version of the show. It was one of Le Grand Ballet Canadien most popular productions and they brought it back several times over the years until they 'retired' the production.

Good morning, all! The neighbor above me did not arrive home until around 7am this morning. That means that once I turned out the lights at 10 at night, i slept quite well. Frankly, i wish he preferred to spend most of his time at his lady friend's apartment.

This morning, I am off to Toyland.  I don't know if any scores have come in to be proofed, but we're three weeks behind the schedule I set, and I am not very happy about it. I'll accomplish what I can - if I have nothing to proof, I'll unpack more cartons and put them away - and then head home.

My first memories of ballet are on tv in the early 1950s: either the broadcast of the Royal Ballet's SLEEPING BEAUTY or CINDERELLA, both with Margot Fonteyn. Two of my favorites - CAKEWALK and PINEAPPLE POLL - are hardly performed these days, and I was lucky to see the Joffrey Ballet Company perform CAKEWALK, which is a lot of fun. City Ballet keeps Robbins' and Balanchine's choreography going strong, thank God, and I think they - and Royal Ballet's Frederick Ashton - are the best. Robbins' DANCES AT A GATHERING is one of the most amazing and heartbreaking things I've ever seen, and I'm still waiting to catch Balanchine's macabre LA VALSE.

I love ballet.....although I haven't seen A LOT of it in person.

I did enjoy the Houston Ballet when they brought their SWAN LAKE to I.U. in Bloomington many years ago.  And I have seen the Butler University Nutcracker a couple of times....most enjoyable.

Of course I also enjoy dance on film and video.....  I like the Maurice Bejert BOLERO in LES UNS ET LES AUTRES.

And DR ELMORE recommended a terrific film that I highly recommend to dance lovers here - it's a modern ballet set in Paris.....if DR ELMORE can't remember the name, I will have to find the DVD....somewhere around here.....

AND The Car Man by the guy by Matthew Bourne.

TOD:

The Nutcracker was the first ballet I saw. An evening with Barishnikov (sp?) and Patricia McBride was the second. I was in ninth grade when he came to perform with the Louisville Ballet. Really wonderful evening, including a Balanchine pas de deuze and "Patroushka," although the Stravinsky music was very strange to me.

Among favorites of mine was seeing Suzanne Ferrell and McBride in their farewell performance with NYC Ballet doing "Jewels," which Balanchine had created for them.

I haven't had the time I would have liked to study dance more and I don't really know what I'm watching, but I do enjoy it, especially 20th century works by Balanchine, Robbins and the like.

I wore shoes outside yesterday since the ground was completely bare (the streets not the grass). There are still large mounds of snow from where the snow removal companies piled snow.

I was so hoping we'd get Spring weather soon. The bike path looked clear.

But that said we are supposed to get a huge storm tonight/tues/wed. I guess the chance that the weather will stay warm enough to turn to rain is probably too much to hope for. :(

I want Spring!

I've never seen a ballet in the theatre unless it was part of a musical.  I've seen some on TV but don't remember watching any all the way through.  I admire the discipline and find some of it incredibly beautiful, but not really where I choose to spend my entertainment dollar or time.

TOD - Didn't really see any ballet until I moved to Ohio.  My earliest memories are 1) going to Dayton with a co-worker to see Edward Villella in recital at Memorial Hall, and 2) seeing Columbus, Ohio's, BalletMet in concert at the local Miami University campus, where I worked in the library.  That performance was one of my first dates with Richard, who at the time was a fifth grade teacher.  I went to the ladies' room at intermission and when I rejoined him in the lobby he was surrounded by adoring 5th-grade girls.  It was very sweet.

In December 1980, right before we were married in January 1981, Richard and I took his nieces to see THE NUTCRACKER in Cincinnati.  They were 6 and 8 and, after the performance, the lady behind us complimented us on our well-behaved daughters.  We just said, "Oh, thank you!"

Of course, once DS Rob started dating Mary Linda, we saw quite a bit of ballet at the University of Cincinnati.  My favorite was their full-length SWAN LAKE, in the spring of 2008.

Back from a three-mile jog.  I didn't receive my airline e-mail to check in so I went to the site and did so.  Then I called them and asked them why the e-mail hadn't arrived.  I talked to one of the most ignorant people ever, and pity the people who try to make a reservation with her.  I asked and she looked at my file and said I'd received the e-mail on March 6.  I explained that was the confirmation e-mail and I was talking about the check-in e-mail for my flight.  Then she said they don't send those e-mails, that we're just supposed to go to the site to do that.  I expressed disbelief and said I have never not gotten that e-mail before a flight.  She then asked if it had gone into my spam folder at which point I should have asked for a supervisor.  I said I don't have a spam folder for that account.  Then she asked if it had arrived while we were talking - I told her no, at which point she said again that they don't send them out.  I thought I was hearing a Pinter play by that point.  Of course, when I got home from the jog, there it was.

Topic of the Day:

I'm not a particular fan of ballet on its own, so I haven't seen many ballets live.  My sister's boyfriend had tickets for Pacific Ballet Northwest (http://www.pnb.org/) in Seattle, and my sister couldn't go, so I went.  It was very good.  It was three different short ballets, but I don't remember more than that.

Several ballet/dance groups have come to Olympia on tour that I've ushered for...all have been very, very good:

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (http://www.alvinailey.org/)
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (http://www.trockadero.org/)
Mark Morris Dance Group (http://markmorrisdancegroup.org/)
Pilobolus (http://www.pilobolus.com/home.jsp)

These are the ones that I can specifically remember seeing and very muchly enjoying. :D

Proceeds from the book sale = $10, 867.05!

Even after expenses, that will mean a lot of scholarships!
Spectacular.

Thanks, DR John G!

Amoeba is the BEST place to browse for CDs! I spend an awful lot of money at the one in Hollywood, whenever I am visiting.

Of course, I spend an awful lot of money browsing for CDs on Amazon.com, as well.

I'd heard a lot about Amoeba and when I finally got into the Hollywood store last fall, it turned out to be all that and more.  You can't do the whole store in one visit or you'll be seeing double.

Did I buy anything?  No, because I was traveling as light as possible.  Next time, though...

Contractor two has come and gone.  And I must stop and just relax now because I haven't stopped since I got up at nine.  I spent an hour trying to get the printer configured with the laptop - that's finally done.

Good evening.

BK: I'm afraid it's going to be a cool visit, weatherwise.  We actually had a little snow this morning.  It's going to be in the mid-fifties tomorrow but back down to around 50 Wednesday and in the 40's later in the week.

I've been to the market, and the weather is not at all pleasant. I don't know if the snow will stick but it's making for slippery mobility.

I'm going to have some dinner, then watch tv and read the new Jane Austen biography.

Thanks, DRs Jane and Cillaliz - wish you both could have been here!

I miss browsing for books.  It would have been fun.

I went to Amoeba Records last night in SF, found some cool stuff, but I, too, miss browsing through CD's, records, etc... the art is lost :(
I do, too. I really miss record stores. The used CD/DVD stores here are OK, but not great.

No. I haven't read much of the Austen juvenilia. I have it here somewhere. I believe that her cousin (?)Eliza who was the widow of a French nobleman and who later married one of Jane's brothers, was the model for Lady Susan.

Look at the first pages.  It is very different from anything else she wrote, which might be why it wasn't published until after her death yet it was written when she was 19.

The more I read the more engrossed I became in the story.  Jane obviously didn't know how to wrap up the story, not so much the telling of it but the style of her writing.
Title: Re: AT THE BALLET
Post by: elmore3003 on March 18, 2013, 04:54:18 PM
Her cousin Eliza married a French nobleman who was beheaded during the Revolution, and Eliza barely escaped France with her life. My memory is that she and Jane were close before her marriage but that Jane disapproved of her putting moves on Jane's brother, who was younger than Eliza. This is all residual memory from the Tomalin biography pf Austen that I read over 15 years ago.

I have the 6-volume Oxford edition of Austen. LADY SUSAN is in it, along with the unfinished THE WATSONS and SANDITON and her juvenilia, like her History of England.

From DR TCB:
Quote
They just interviewed this woman on the news that was a passenger on one of the recent Carnival ship hiccups.  She was screaming about bringing her lawyer into the arguments.  She had better go back and reread the Terms she signed before she boarded the ship.

Hmm, you mean the small print I never read?

Not really all that small, but yes, those are the parts she should have read (and you, too).

Watching Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson in a production of "Look Back in Anger." Not as good as it should have been. I think it's  because Branagh is not as irresistible as he is irritating. I don't understand the character's magnetic hold on the people around him.
