Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Thursday, and now it is time for you to post until the Thursday cows come home.

I'm just back from seeing Ms. LuPone at the Razz Room in SF.  It was quite spontaneous as a friend of mine was ill and couldn't use his tickets.  It was the show she did at 54 Below, and she was just great.  An hour and 20 minutes or pure joy.

And that's all I have... who could ask for anything more?

Larry wrote:  At the end, I got all weepie because no one today writes silly so well or produces songs like "You've Got Possibilities" or "You've Got What I Need."

Larry, i really am happy for all the artists. several of whom I love dearly, and no one respects the greatness of Strouse and Adams like me.

But your word "produces" could be  the key word -

Many of today's writers under 40 or 50 write "silly" just great, and create great silly songs - the producers don't trust shows with songs like that any more for Broadway, though, unless they come form somewhere with a sheaf of good reviews..    but I urge you to look at Lutvak and freedman's score based on Kind Hearts ad Coronets (whatever they're calling it at the Old Globe), the score of  Nobody Loves You coming up at Second Stage.  Also, some of the best of Goldrich and Heisler, some of the best of Adam Gwon's funny stuff (he has two sides that are very different, his moody stuff is arty, but his his goofy side is wonderfully silly and makes me double over when I need to feel better).   these are as much testaments to the worlds of Strosue and Adams as so many are to Sondheim, I think.

In other words, I think their tradiiton lives on(maybe in part)  in the classes Strouse taught, for example - just as Sondheim's tradition live on, and Herman's lives on in others, etc!

They did a video together to honor Cameron Mackintosh, IIRC.  They must get along.

Good morning, all!

I wish I could have slept longer, but the neighbor above me began stomping around at 7:00 and by 7:30, I figured I wouldn't get any more sleep and it was time to begin moving. I'll leave here around 9:45; I have a barber appointment at 10:30, and then I will head to Toyland. I have a bit of work there, then Anthony Morelli is showing up around 12:30 to drop off some work and to pick up a small job I've asked him to do for me. Following that, I'll hang out at Toyland until I meet Bruce Pomahac at 4:30. We'll visit, have dinner, and see the Irish Rep production of DONNYBROOK, following which Joshie, the music director, the wonderful harpist Karen Lindquist, and I step out for a drink. Bruce is going out with Donna Kane, who is playing one of the DONNYBROOK leads. I am hoping for a fantastic day.

I doubt it, DR Elmore.  She and her husband came to town, probably after you left, for him to join the big pediatric group.  Cathy was a nurse and was one of the team who tended to our friend Tot in her last days.  She was also one of the nicest physician wives I've ever known.

Loved the movie when it first came out on video. A fictionalized version was what Robert Altman was working on at the time of his death.

What interests me about the musical is that it's a mix of fact and fiction. The writers tracked down the people from the movie to hear what had happened to them since, and then worked from there. The character Hunter Foster plays was made more of a redneck than he is in the movie or real life, and, at least according to the actor, he didn't mind at all how they changed his character around. He didn't see it as being his story.

Back from a really interesting work session - we ran through all the album stuff and it's going to be really good.  But that wasn't the interesting part - the interesting part came after, just sitting and talking - I'll talk about it more in the notes, but it's why I always insist with singers that there are a lot of conversations, because out of them sometimes brilliant ideas can emerge, and that's what happened.  In about thirty minutes Lanny and I will be on our way to the Ford's Theater via Metro - we'll pick up our tickets and then find somewhere fun to dine.  And then, it's Hello, Dolly!

I am reading a very interesting book for review - it is titled TENDER COMRADES.  Interviews with those who were personally and professionally involved in the Blacklisting of the 1950's....

I didn't expect to like it - but there are a lot of interesting stories in there.....much better than a "history" of the times written by someone who just researches the facts.

I just read a bit about the book.  It sounds very interesting, especially the interviews with those defending why they ratted out others to save themselves.

Speaking of eating...today, I went downtown to a local sandwich shop (http://www.5thavesandwich.com/) and met a couple of friends for lunch and visiting.  I had the club sandwich and it was huge!  It was three layers with ham, turkey, bacon and tomatoes, and a few other things that added up to one very large and delicious sandwich!  I only ate half of it!  I wish that I had taken a picture...it would've definitely been worth posting. :D

Anyway, I'm off now to my parents' for dinner, but I'm still not quite hungry from the lunch sandwich, which I'll bring, so I'll probably just have half of what's left when I get there and the rest a little later tonight.

Be back later!

Quote
Jane are you familiar with a restaurant in town called Cucina Biazza (sp)?

Yes, why?

We haven't eaten there since Bryan moved from here to Portland which was a long, long time ago.

Yesterday at lunch, one of our group said that he and his wife were planning on spending a week this summer at the Shakespeare Festival.  Another member told him not to miss eating at Ashland's very best restaurant.  I didn't think i had ever heard you mention it.

Back from a deliciously delicious meal at McCormick's and Schmik.  I'd eaten at one of the LA ones and really hadn't liked it, but this branch was superb.  I had grilled salmon (blackened) and veggies in a lemon butter sauce and a shrimp cocktail to start.  Since this was the first meal of the day not bad calorie-wise.  I also ordered Lanny and I a side of creamed spinach.  I had only four bites of it but it was certainly amongst the best creamed spinach I've ever had.  Then I splurged, because after three weeks of being really good I figured I was allowed one splurge, so we ordered the chocolate bag for dessert.  Inside the "bag" was white chocolate mousse, and the "bag" itself was dark chocolate.  Also some berries.  Lanny had very little of the mousse itself and a lot of the bag.  I had a little of the bag and a healthy dose of the mousse and berries, but even between us we didn't finish and left quite a bit - so hopefully no real damage.

That is similar to William Manchesters two-volume book THE GLORY AND THE DREAM: A Narrative History of America 1932 - 1972.  I expected to be bored to death with the books, but he managed to blend the historical events of the time, but also the movies, the styles, the fads, etc.  It was wonderful.

And then there was Hello, Dolly.  I'll talk more in the notes, but let me just say that in fifty-something years of theatergoing it was the single worst professional production of a classic musical comedy that I have ever seen.  I don't mind a director having a "concept" - in this case a stripped down Dolly with no sets that basically takes place in a train station with the luggage carts moving around to become tables and the hat store and like that.  In fact, without changing that part of it, I could stage a fun Dolly on that set - one that would use it cleverly and make it work.  If you like brown, this is the production for you.  Everything is brown - sets, costumes - it's like you're watching Hello, Dolly by Anton Chekov.  Everything is lifeless and dreary and there's simply no joy.  The director states he's trying to play the text, to get to the heart of Dolly, but he's doing the opposite - he simply does not have the tools to deliver.  And if you're going to forego Gower Champion's brilliant choreography, you'd better have something damn good to replace it.  Gower was one of the greats at dance as storytelling - here we get steps (not interesting steps) and that's it.  Twice the choreographer paid homage and gave us Gower moves and they were the only moves in the show that worked.  Funny that.  A cast of around seventeen including a six-person ensemble.  Not the Dolly I want.  The title song is performed by Dolly and four boys.  They do roll out a big carpet for her entrance - I thought, finally some red, but alas, it was beige.  The poor actors are left hung out to dry, especially the talented Nancy Opel, who is so much better than she's being allowed here.  Either her director encouraged a performance without energy (real) or her director didn't do what he needed to do to GET the energy.

Well, I'm officially in the middle of the Casino race here in Sioux City. There are four different proposals going to the racing and gaming commission and one of them will become our land based casino.  I was going to stay out of it, but have been asked to speak on behalf of the one I really do want to get the license.   I'm pretty amazed that they actually think what I have to say will make a difference, but what the heck

Would this be a non-Native American casino?
Title: Re: THURSDAY IN WASHINGTON, DC
Post by: Cillaliz on March 22, 2013, 08:26:23 PM
Well, yes and no.  Yes, because we do have casinos in Iowa and this isn't a Native American casino.  No because would be financed and managed by Ho-Chunk inc. which is a Native corporation.   We already have a casino in Sioux city but it's sort of a fake riverboat.  At first you had to have a real boat that moved, then you had to be on the river, but not move  Not it can be land based, but the licenses are few and far between and of the 4 proposals, only one will get the license.

In Washington we only have Native American casinos.  Well, actually we do have some other "casinos" but they are basically just card rooms.

Two of the stories at the links above are about the Sgt Blass, a young man from my home town who died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.  The first is at the airport when the family met his casket and the second is about the man who lined the streets of my home town with 2000 flags in honor of Sgt Blass

The flag man story is on the same page, I can't get it to come up in a separate link. It' below the first story and called "man honors fallen soldiers with thousands of flags"

The Native American casinos are all strictly for profit.  I think there are something like 24 casinos around the state.  Each one is run by a different tribe.  Besides the gambling the tribal casinos are the only place Washington residents (and guests) can go and still smoke inside.  That makes their bars and hotels popular as well.

I considered going home for the service on Tuesday.   I don't know that I'd go to the actual service, but afterward they are asking people to line the street from the high school to the outskirts of town.  It's about 3 miles give or take.  He is being buried in a nearby town.   So the entire lenght of town will be  lined with people and the 2000 flags.   I think it's an amazing tribute.   Unfortunately, I'll be at the meeting about the casino
