Well, you've read the notes, the notes had fury and spoke of Christine, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently watching their favorite movie based on a Stephen King book - MOOsery.
-
And the word of the day is: FLEHMEN!
-
4:23 am, and I can't get to sleep.
:(
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
5:24am and I've just gotten up.
-
Chester will be up by 7 and want to be walked.
Then, the cleaning lady will be here by 8:30.
I will be a zombie all day.
:( :( :( :(

Good morning, all! I had very peculiar dreams and I'm happy to be up and moving. I've been listening to the edits of the DEAREST ENEMY Epilogue for the past 30 minutes, and much of it is quite nice.
Today is another Toyland trek. I'll finish up the proof on "Clementina," perhaps try out the binding machine with my new binding supplies, and head home. Ialso need to make some fixes to the vocal arrangement of "Let's Begin."
DR Matthew, I'm sorry that you did not see Sarah Brightman last night. I know you were looking forward to it.

Have you seen this great student video in response to the Steubenville rape case:

good morning to all

ask bk
who are the lead dancers in Turkey Lurkey Time from Bacharach Tribute you directed?
-
saw the Callaway Sisters last night in their show BOOM. They were ask to dropped 25 minutes from the show including the Jimmy Webb songs, Joni Mitchell songs, Blowin' in the Wind and some of the patter. They needed to get the show down to about 65 minutes. The Royal Room was over flowing with people.
After the show I heard this man talking to friends who had a very distinctive voice and realized he was Dick Robinson who has syndicated radio show called "Standards By The Sea", He is Founder and President of The Society for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook. He does his two hour show from his yacht.
-
I watched all three MEN IN BLACK films one after another, recorded in HD on my hard drive. I'd seen the first one before but not the other two. I thought they were all great fun.
Having done that, I'm off later for drinks with a few friends.
-
Good morning, all.
Decent sleep, coffee, banana, toast, more coffee.

Last night, as I walked home from Charlotte's building, I saw flashing lights at 79th Street and knew something was gong on. It turns out that an 18 year-old boy out celebrating his birthday was killed by a subway because of his foolishness:

Good Morning on this bright fragrant Wednesday (the orange blossoms are wonderful right now).

Oh my! Such links! What a world what a world.

I think he is your first cousin once removed.
First cousins share a grandparent, second cousins share a great-grandparent, third cousins share a great-great-grandparent, and so on. The degree of cousinhood ("first," "second," etc.) denotes the number of generations between two cousins and their nearest common ancestor.
The term "removed" refers to the number of generations separating the cousins themselves. So your first cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your first cousin. Your second cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your second cousin. And your first cousin twice removed is the grandchild (or grandparent) of your first cousin.

Re the notes:
Oddly enough, I had never gone to see THE FURY when it was released. I have no idea why it wouldn't have been a "must see" for me then. And I never crossed paths with it in all these intervening years. So, when I watched the Blu-ray last week, it was a new, undiscovered film for me (love when that happens) and I was fascinated from beginning to end. No, it can't equal CARRIE -- it suffers (if it must suffer at all) from being a sequel of sorts. But what a sequel of sorts! And what a cast! And yes, what a score from John Williams, Bernard Herrmann quotes and all. And though having never seen it, I had absolutely no problem with the look of it. It looked like film -- especially, the way so many films looked in the '70s -- from first frame to last. Why those aspects of it are distracting or even catastrophic for some of these people watching it now, is totally beyond me. Little imperfections and all, it's beautiful, and I can't get enough of the beautiful look of film so beautifully transferred. We are so fortunate to have all of this now.
Haven't yet watched CHRISTINE. Will do so soon. (I got what must have been one of the last copies the evening it went on sale.) And I'll agree with BK's short list of Stephen King stories and films. These are the ones with substance, and I'm glad they attracted the attention of those very filmmakers. I had a similar, though not as severe, reaction to THE SHINING. I liked it okay for the most part, but was put off by the Nicholson antics and humor. (And I love Nicholson antics and humor.) But I'd wanted it to be more "serious". So I remained 'eh' about it, and it was years later that I returned to it and could see it as a Kubrick film. Book and film, two different things, and I do love 'em both now.
(I traveled that same path with Altman's THE LONG GOODBYE, a more extreme example of book/film love/hate. I still don't "love" it, but now I'm able to like it. A lot.)
-
Wow, DR Jrand62, it sounds like you know this stuff. Me, I have to throw names into my genealogical software and let IT tell me who's what. Seriously.
-
DR Elmore, thanks for those links -- both good and bad. OMG, what a tragedy. Unthinkable, really.
-
The Fury also features, of course, Mr Andrew Stevens.
-
THE FURY also had a great TV ad campaign.....

So, when did you stop reading Stephen King? Was there a certain novel or collection of stories that just ended it for you?

Sorry to hear that much was cut from the show. More "Boo" than "Boom," though I image they were still good.

And the word of the day is: FLEHMEN!
I usually cough up a lot of that when I get a nasty cold.
-
TOD:

The King novel IT was my camel's back: too long, too meandering, and it needed an editor to say stop being indulgent; your novel's not that important or good, and when all the boys had to have sex with the girl to rescue themselves, WTF?

Wednesday morning greetings! Richard and I have been finishing up our tax paperwork and he's now taking it to our accountant's office. I attribute 32 years of marital happiness, in part, to the fact that we've never tried to do our own taxes!
-
LOL, DR Ginny!
-
Thank you. I really don't want the expense this year.
-
FJL, listened to "Love Is Like Water" this morning. Really beautiful song.
-
Elmore, did you read "Gerald's Game"? I can't remember where in the chronology that one fits. But it started out to be his best book because the terror was so real and human, and then he ruined it with some unnecessary alien element that made it all silly.
I've listened to many of his book since then, but I won't sit down with a copy and read one.
-
Thank you. I really don't want the expense this year.
But maybe you'll get a tax deduction if it's more energy efficient. We're hoping for that because of the new furnace we bought in 2012...

Story on the costume designer for the underdesigned production of "Hello, Dolly!" that BK saw. As if BK's review didn't say enough, this makes me want to see the show even less.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/theater_dance/at-fords-theatre-costume-designer-dresses-dolly-with-an-updated-period-flair/2013/03/26/854c87da-9624-11e2-9e23-09dce87f75a1_story.html?hpid=z12
And the costumes are dreary. Would love to see FJL do a spoof to the tune of "So Long, Dearie." Maybe "Dolly's Dreary."
-

great, I'll tell Skip!
-
Good grief - the red dress isn't in the finale - it closes the First Act.....or maybe some leading ladies put it back on for the curtain call.....
-
Sounds kind of like DR JOSE's The Music Man set during the depression......which also happened in D.C.

Somewhere around Pet Sematary. And then when every book automatically became the length of The Stand I just lost interest. I tried to go back with Dreamcatcher, which was, of all the King books I've read, the nadir. I hear the Kennedy book is a real return to form.
-
I didn't even mention Before the Parade Passes By, in which the cast are all in dreary costumes WATCHING the parade - pass by, which you never see, of course.
-
Oh, and I'm up - exactly eight hours of sleep as I didn't get to bed until two.

I saw that in D.C. at the Arena.
I mentioned that production of A TIME TO KILL very briefly but glowingly in the comments under the article at

11//22/63 could have used a good editor. It was about 4 CDs, or anywhere from 120-150 pages, too long. Too much stuff about swing dance lessons, but the rest was cherce.

Perhaps, BK, on days such as Wednesday's Ask BK Day, you might consider adding a secondary topic for discussion. Most of us have been around this site for a long time, and it is difficult to think of new and revealing questions. But just because we don't have questions, the post total should not have to suffer.

Yes, I saw that on Diane Sawyer last week. A much needed response indeed.

There's a stage actor kid here in LA who'd be fantastic - don't remember his name, but I've seen him in two shows. Other than that, I really think we'd just have to find a kid.
-
Back from a three-mile jog.
-
Secondary topic: What are your favorite films of De Palma and John Carpenter.
-
It was a bus ride from hell getting home today, and I am home. I need to run to the market.
I also need a nap.
-
My favorite Stephen King book, and filmed adaption, is THE STAND. I don't often reread novels, but THE STAND was an exception. And the TV miniseries was everything I wanted it to be.
Second favorite would be a tie between THE DEAD ZONE and IT. I really liked the film version of THE DEAD ZONE, but the TV adaptation of IT should never have shown us IT. A big disappointment, they should have showed the adults seeing IT, but left it to the viewers imagination.
Come to think of IT, I reread both THE DEAD ZONE and IT.

Secondary TOD:
Brian De Palma
SISTERS
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (benefit of the doubt, haven't seen it in many years)
CARRIE
THE FURY
BLOW OUT
John Carpenter
HALLOWEEN
THE FOG
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
CHRISTINE
THEY LIVE
Both are entertaining, I like each of their styles, and I'm being a bit of a hard grader by not including some of their other efforts which I also very much enjoy.

I remember reading this and really enjoying the writing, but it's been so long since I read it that I have absolutely no memory of any alien element. :-\

TOD:
So, when did you stop reading Stephen King? Was there a certain novel or collection of stories that just ended it for you?
I think that "Gerald's Game" was one of the last Stephen King books that I read. I also only read the first two or three of the "Gunslinger" series. It just took much, much, much (that's three muches) too long for him to write and publish them taht I just lost interest. I suppose I could go back and read them all now, but I've got quite a few things on my Kindle that I need to get through before I even think about going back to previously read books.
-
I have not read "Gerald's Game," but I liked the early books, especially "'Salem's Lot" and "The Shining." I also liked the collections of short stories and the book on horror in media.
I thought the wonderful dePalma film "Carrie" was an improvement on the novel - I felt the same about JAWS, a terrible novel and a great movie - and I remember liking "Christine" and "Pet Sematary," which creeped me out.
-
I agree that 11/22/63 needed some editing. It was the first Stephen King I'd read in a long, long time and it took me a long, long time to finish it on my Kindle.
-
My friend, actor Bob Nichols, who was Captain Andy in John McGlinn's SHOW BOAT has died at age 88. He was kind man and a very good one.

DR Jane, I'm sorry to hear that your book group is falling apart. Mine, too, is in transition. I started this group, as a sub-group of AAUW Middletown, when Rob was in kindergarten. Because I have agreed - drumroll, please - to take the presidency of AAUW Middletown for the upcoming year, one of the book group members has stepped up to take over. She will do a great job and I'm glad she's taking a leadership position, both for the book group and as part of the AAUW branch overall.

Very sorry to hear that, DR Elmore.

Sorry for the loss of your friend, DR Elmore...

Sorry to hear that Larry.

Last night, following the TOD of a couple of days ago, I had a craving for some Hammer, so I popped in MANIAC which I hadn't seen in some years. Had the greatest time watching it, especially since I'd forgotten some of the twists and turns it takes in the last 20 minutes. Great stuff.
THE SNORKEL is on that disc, and I think I'll watch it tonight. In fact, that and CHRISTINE just might make a fine double feature.
-
Only one other person turned up for drinks tonight. One person has been rushed to hospital for appendicitis - probably to have it removed and someone else had an emergency broken window at home to attend to.

This day has been a really difficult one. I thought ROBERTA was cast, and today we lost our leading man. He's in City Opera's new production of "Anna Nicole Smith," and. while it was my understanding three weeks ago that all schedules were fine, I learned three days ago that they begin their rehearsals on Aug 13, the same day we begin ROBERTA in Dublin, and City Opera doesn't like his being gone for two weeks. I am not paid nearly enough.

Thanks, DR George! I'm trying to keep my sense of humor going, but this has been a really bad day. Luckily, I've got options for other baritones, but I don't like it when I lose my first choice.

Nice.
Over the years I've met too many women who have said the woke up from parties or dates realizing they had been violated. :(

I recently read Jack Kelly's (Garner's co-star on MAVERICK) biography, and it was quite good.

We used to do our own, one doing the initial paperwork & the other checking it. During moves that were confusing with two states for income we used accountants. Once Turbo Tax became available Keith has done it every year & set the kids up to do their own.

How many people are in your book group? I have decided to host our May meeting. Someone might take my July spot if she doesn't end up as the June back-up (the June hostess is still recovering from a stroke but doing pretty good). I have invited a guest to join us in May but chances are she won't join, if she decided to at all, until after summer.

No news from DR Laura so I shall add my vibes here for not needing a new air conditioner, or expensive work on it.
-
Bob Nichols also appeared in my recording of Drat! The Cat! - he was terrific. Jason Graae was doing Ragtime with him and suggested him.
-
Well, as I feared, the Man from Philadelphia is now in on the casting situation. I'm putting it all aside and watching tv. I consoled myself by ordering the new Criterion edition of MONSIEUR VERDOUX.
-
Picked up a couple of packages, one of which is a new 11 CD box set of the complete Legrand/Demy collaborations - every note of music. And finally the English-language version of Young Girls of Rochefort. I'm curious to hear the quality of some of this stuff - since many times this company, who says they've properly licensed, doesn't actually have the master tapes - the composers or estates usually give them to this company - the proof of this is when they did their silly version of That Man From Rio, saying the only tapes available were for about four tracks and then augmenting those with NEW recordings made by Alexandre Desplat. As you all know, the master tapes were all sitting here in LA at MGM and that's what we used for our complete version of the score.
-
I left shortly after the AC man arrived and my husband took care of it. He's not here now, so I don't know what the verdict was.
I had lunch with a friend and her two-year-old. The toddler babbled constantly about the wizard balloon (hot air balloon she saw this morning) the birds on the restaurant patio, the nearby water fountains, and the airplane that went fast that she rode to Phoenix on. She calls me Miss Lorla.
-
Then I dropped off some milkweed seeds at The Monarch Scientist's home and then went to the bank to pay for my too-many purchases that I made last month.
-
I'm sorry for your rotten day, Elmore. Maybe you should go have lunch with a two-year-old.

"She Calls Me Miss Lorla" is the title of my new semi-fictional novel about a small Arizona town and its inhabitants.

With the way I feel today, Miss Loria, I'd probably eat the child for lunch,

Or maybe you would feel better if you threw a tantrum. Like if they try to take away your mac and cheese too soon.

I hope that wasn't too big.

As with last night it is just me here. Sigh.

I saw that announced somewhere a while back. I am hoping that I can get there, but since my track record on travel isn't exactly stellar this year, I'm just going to wait to even think about it

I saw that in D.C. at the Arena.
I mentioned that production of A TIME TO KILL very briefly but glowingly in the comments under the article at
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/11/new-broadway-play-to-star-estelle-parsons-and-stephen-spinella/
Interesting. They don't have the rights to the film only to the book - or something like that. Rupert told me never to talk to him about the film as he has never seen it and had to agree not to watch it to guarantee the play is not based at all on the movie.

VIBES OF ALL KINDS TO DR ELMORE!!!!!!!!
Sorry about your friend
-
The verdict is in:
It should survive another summer.
-
Larry, sorry about your casting situation.
-
FJL, thanks for the Cimino "Take Me Along" commercial.
-
Finishing up "To Rome with Love" and find it meh overall. But it's always nice to see Judy Davis, even if she only has two minutes of screen time.
-
Welcome, 0 guests.
Where is everyone?

Here's an interesting new website for folks who love old movies: The Brotherhood of the Popcorn.

Looks promising.
-
Good grief - the red dress isn't in the finale - it closes the First Act.....or maybe some leading ladies put it back on for the curtain call.....
No, the red dress is for the Harmonia Gardens which is scene 2 of Act II.
-
On a Legrand/Demy binge. Watched part of Gorgo.
-
The finale is usually the white wedding dress.
-
CHRISTINE -- lots of fun.
-
Every time BK says Legrand/Demy, I think we're about to hear an announcement of some very welcome film restoration.

Doesn't sound like there are any parts for me. I will tell my agent not to bother.
-
DR Elmore, here's hoping for a far better day tomorrow.

Secondary topic: What are your favorite films of De Palma and John Carpenter.
De Palma would be :
CARRIE
BLOW OUT
Carpenter would be:
HALLOWEEN
HALLOWEEN II

I think he is your first cousin once removed.
First cousins share a grandparent, second cousins share a great-grandparent, third cousins share a great-great-grandparent, and so on. The degree of cousinhood ("first," "second," etc.) denotes the number of generations between two cousins and their nearest common ancestor.
The term "removed" refers to the number of generations separating the cousins themselves. So your first cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your first cousin. Your second cousin once removed is the child (or parent) of your second cousin. And your first cousin twice removed is the grandchild (or grandparent) of your first cousin.
thank you! I have been trying to figure out how that works for years!

I have to confess -- I printed that out and put it in the genealogy file drawer. (Yes, I have a genealogy file drawer.)
-
This Legrand set is pretty amazing. Eleven discs - under fifty bucks. Can't beat that.
-
Secondary TOD:
Brian De Palma
SISTERS
PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (benefit of the doubt, haven't seen it in many years)
CARRIE
THE FURY
BLOW OUT
John Carpenter
HALLOWEEN
THE FOG
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
CHRISTINE
THEY LIVE
Both are entertaining, I like each of their styles, and I'm being a bit of a hard grader by not including some of their other efforts which I also very much enjoy.
I foErgot about PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. I love that movie.

FJL, listened to "Love Is Like Water" this morning. Really beautiful song.
One of my very favorite songs from THE LAST STARFIGHTER.
Mine as well - Love Is Like Water and Father and Son are probably my two favorites
-
Elmore I am sorry to hear about your friend
-
and I am very sorry to hear about the local boy who paid so tragically for his stupid stunt --- and for his family and friends
-
Stephen King - all of his paperbacks are on sale at World of Wisdom for $2 each.
Are they signed?
-
and I am also sorry to hear about your casting troubles

ooh! Ben's turn! :):)

The days seem to have fewer hours in them just lately - and I need to be up in 6 of them --- so good night
-
My friend, actor Bob Nichols, who was Captain Andy in John McGlinn's SHOW BOAT has died at age 88. He was kind man and a very good one.
I am very sorry, elmore. My condolences.
-
Our little troublemaker is at it again. It's very difficult taking the high road. I'm trying and will continue to try.

~~~Vibes for Larry and ROBERTA!!~~~
Thanks, DR George! I'm trying to keep my sense of humor going, but this has been a really bad day. Luckily, I've got options for other baritones, but I don't like it when I lose my first choice.
Oh come on Lar, you know I was your first choice. Give me enough mortician's wax and I could still be your young baritone!
-
Good morning, all! I had very peculiar dreams and I'm happy to be up and moving. I've been listening to the edits of the DEAREST ENEMY Epilogue for the past 30 minutes, and much of it is quite nice.
Today is another Toyland trek. I'll finish up the proof on "Clementina," perhaps try out the binding machine with my new binding supplies, and head home. Ialso need to make some fixes to the vocal arrangement of "Let's Begin."
DR Matthew, I'm sorry that you did not see Sarah Brightman last night. I know you were looking forward to it.
Thanks Larry - I'll see her in October. Something to look forward to!
-
Oh, and I'm here.... running around all day and didn't have a chance to post. Holy Week madness!!
-
However, with all the madness, I think I'm somewhat prepared
FATHER AND SON? I don't remember that one.
