Title: THE WACKY WORLD OF EBAY BOOKSELLERS
Post by: bk on March 30, 2013, 12:57:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both wacky and worldly, and now it is time for you to post until the wacky and worldly cows come home.

Ben - Re shows like THE OFFICE - i guess I see shows like that as "making fun" of the office politics rather than actual living the office politics.  Kind of like seeing HOW TO SUCCEED , which is full of the back-stabbing an front-stabbing, but stylized in a way that if I see types i know in life from work i can say they nailed those people, if i see qualities of myself i can say ooh that's me in my office habits so maybe I can change that if that's indeed bad office behavior.

Kind of like Archie Bunker fighting with Michael Stivic on All in the Family but Archie clearly being the lead character - - i never saw him as spending a half hour with a bigot as a star , i saw him as spending a half hour looking at a bigot being exposed and commented on.  as opposed to mary tyler moore Show, where for the most part, i felkt we were spending time with people we might like to hang out with rather than comment on, and just the Ted Baxter and Phyllis and Sue Ann types were being laughed at.

But that's great discussion stuff you brought up on that.  It does make me think about the need for networks (and I wonder if it applies to big commercial shows like shows on Broadway) to consider what people wnat to see after they've worked hard all day.

Post by: FJL on March 30, 2013, 03:22:54 AM
To bring it to theater, HOW TO SUCCEED is so stylized that it's easier to laugh.  THE APARTMENT and PROMISES PROMISES are of course more "real" and human, so it actually hurts more if you see the reality of day-to-day office politics.  I think.  Not a quality evaluation by any means, just a comparison of how the works stand based on rael-life office situations (at leaat as they remained when I started being in offices several years after the eras of those shows).

No hithering and yonning today, which is a bit of a relief.  It's a day to stay around the house and get things done.  It is well needed for that, and I'm in the mood for it.

If anybody with a kindle is interested in reading Stephenie Meyer's book THE HOST (that is now a movie) it is $1.99 today. It is really good (although the first 100 pages are a bit slower).

Also her other Twilight ebooks are all $2.99/each.

Good morning, all!

I slept late, I will shortly begin the laundry, and tidy up the apartment. I'm doing as little as possible this weekend. All of the recording madness this week, and now the non-response from the Man from Philadelphia, has worn out my mind and body. The curious thing is that I think I got our leading man yesterday, the one the producer wanted for the recording, but so far that leading man has not confirmed that he is indeed accepting the job.  So, until I hear from him, I cannot move, and that's frustrating.

So, on to the chores to occupy my mind and time.

We were both dressed in all black - long skirts to the ankle- and the other assisting - a young man, Sean,  was likewise dressed in all black as was Pastor.   The music was done by the full adult choir (about 30 people now)  the string choir and the bell choir

Sean stood at the altar and read the prayers, I stood in the pulpit and read the prophecies  from Isiah and the Vixter stood at the baptismal font and read the Passion from Luke and Pastor did the darkening

We start with the church lit my seven aisle candles and the large Christ candle  in front of the altar - (the church was stripped of all other candles, hangings etc  Thursday evening)  the only "decoration" is a black stole on the  large cross hanging over the altar

we started with strings , then bells, then a hymn, a prayer, reading from Isaiah, reading from Luke, prayer... one candle extinquished and we continue this way until the church is lit  by only the Christ candle - then that candle is carried  out  and  as the entire church is in darkness the back door is SLAMMED to symbolize the rolling of the stone in front of the tomb - and all exit in silence

Our tradition is that we do not even speak on our way out to the cars -

It is a very moving and somber service

Well Vixdad is coming to take me tyo breakfast as they willhave my car for another hour or so -  does it seem reasonable that O woudl nee new tires with less than 29,000 miles on the car?

At $183.00 A PIECE I said no, thank you

I will see what Costco charges -   come to think of it  - one of those tires is less than 6 months old -  I had a flat that could not be repaired a while ago

methinks I may have to find a new maintenance  facility - I am having some trouble in believing in the veracity of their statements

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

Is it all four?  My previous car, an otherwise wonderful and lovable Nissan, was HELL on front tires and required all too frequent front end alignments.

Not a big fan of William Holden. In his younger days he seemed to be a personality than an actor. His performances seem to be all the same no difference from film. It wasn't until his later years that I think he became a better actor, but still I really don't have a favorite film of his to choose.

I've been watching a high definition TV broadcast of Disney's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Picture quality was superb. I saw the film as a child in 1954 and it seemed absolutely amazing. It still holds up well. James Mason is perfect as Captain Nemo. The only thing which doesn't work for me is Kirk Douglas' over-jokey Ned Land.

one advantage of being Lutheran is that we eat meat on Fridays  :)  So we had the 2 for $20 steak dinners

Funny, much of my childhood we didn't eat meat at home on Fridays.  My parent's traveled a lot to medical conventions so they hired live in help to clean & watch us on Saturday nights and when they traveled.  Many of these women were catholic & in respect to them we didn't have meat for dinner.  I also attended Sunday church with a number of the women as not to be left at home alone.

Thanks, DR TCB!  Tonight, I'll slip entirely out of character and cheer for Ohio State.  Tomorrow, we'll high-tail it home in order to see Michigan's 2:20 tipoff.

Good afternoon.  Beautiful day here.  I've had a couple windows open most of the day.  I love airing out the house.   The cats enjoyed it for awhile, basking in the sun on the window ledges, but now have wandered off to nap somewhere soft.

I've had my walk. I passed a biker that might have been Kyra Sedgewick on Riverside Drive, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I am out of shape, but in a week, my walks and I will be formidable!  Carrying a heavy bag back from the grocery was also good exercise.

It's a beautiful day in Manhattan as well.

It may be cloudy and rainy tomorrow (that's what the weather guessers say) but it's gorgeous right now. We have been out and about running errands and had a trip to the library. We have a documentary about Provincetown, a 1969 production of Twelfth Night with Ralph Richardson, Joan Plowright and others and the HBO Mildred Pierce. Thanks, New York Public Library.

It's an ok day here in the Bay Area.  It's suppose to rain... let's hope it's after our service tonight.  I see to be almost caught up with things.  I'll be heading back to the church in a bit to finish some music prep for musicians, etc - but the power points are done.   Just need to shower, get dressed and get back.  Tomorrow (which begins at 7:00) should run quick and smoothly.

I've got 10 people coming tomorrow and the brush pickup is Monday. A tree trimmer just stopped by and I needed the branches that are over the roof trimmed back. So, I'm seeing the shadows of branches coming down outside as I type this. Strange.

Plus, the area at the curb will be covered with branches. Won't be very sightly, but people can at least get by.

I did that myself, the first time I joined for a Christmas dinner at a friend's house where there were umpteen appetizers and a couple of first courses that I unwittingly took to be the main meal.  Boy, was I in trouble.  I was much better on subsequent occasions, having learned my lesson that day.

DR JohnG, let me know what you think of UNDERTOW...it is one of my all time favorite movies!

From DR TCB:

Considering you could have been a crazy Presbyterian, I guess we should be glad that you are Jewish!

I'm not sure what that means but I'm still chuckling over it.

I understand very little of what I say!

I am at the Honda dealership now having the 30,000 service and yearly inspection done and enjoying the free wifi

I just watched the new episode of "Doctor Who" and WiFi features prominently in the plot...and not in a good way! :o

Since teh Vixter and Ihad not eaten and Vixdad was out at a game, she and I went to Applebees fro dinner --

one advantage of being Lutheran is that we eat meat on Fridays  :)  So we had the 2 for $20 steak dinners

And another coinkydink!  Last night, I went to Applebee's with a couple of friends and I went again today!  They have a new Brew Pub Pretzels & Beer Cheese Dip (http://applebees.com/menu/appetizers/ultimate-trios/brew-pub-pretzels---beer-cheese-dip) and it was delish!  We shared an order last night and today I had to have some for myself. :D I don't drink and I don't like beer but this only had a slight beer flavor.  It was just too good.

DR vixmom -- maybe the car itself has some kind of alignment issue that's wearing the tires out too fast, or unevenly?

Is it all four?  My previous car, an otherwise wonderful and lovable Nissan, was HELL on front tires and required all too frequent front end alignments.

I've also had that problem.  We get our tires from Les Schwab, a tire dealer.   We can stop in anytime to have our tires checked & rotated for free when needed.  They honor their tires when there are problems.

I got my tires from Costco and they also rotate for free.  I think I'm close to being due for another rotating, so I'll probably take my car in sometime soon.

Do you do any of the services outdoors? We used to, but it kept getting too cold on Easter morning. When I lived in Florida, I used to love going to sunrise services on the beach.

I remember a snowy Easter in Massachusetts & Bryan building a snow bunny.

We used to live in Fort Carson, Colorado (right next to Colorado Springs) and I remember one year where it started snowing before Halloween and there was still snow on the ground after Easter.  That can NEVER happen in Washington state.

It may be Easter but it's still very cold and we've just had a snow shower. The weather is expected to stay cold until at least mid April.

Good grief!  Winter is over.  Didn't anyone tell England?

BK - I would think that perhaps  it might be a wise idea to use your alarm and lock your back door when you jog - you can get a little wrist band that holds your back door key - you don't need to have the whole key ring in your pocket

DITTO!!

Or pin your key to your jogging shorts.

PIN MY KEY TO MY JOGGING SHORTS is the name of my new self-help book.

KevinH, PM me the e-mail address she used - if she registered earlier today, I already nuked it and she'll have to do it again - I get 100 spam registrations a day and just nuke them without even looking.

JohnG, I could never have done what I did to Promises without Phil's excellent recording technique.

Never play a drinking game where you drink a shot everytime Ann Baxter says, "Moses!"

Beautiful stained glass windows, TCB.  Is the sanctuary wheelchair unfriendly?

No the church is pretty much wheelchair accessible, but the problem is the parking.  There are only a couple of handicap spots and a heck of a lot of old people.

This is the sanctuary of the church where I was raised.  I still attend this church, or did until this wheelchair fixation came about.  The windows represent The Lord's Prayer.

I am also looking forward to Kevin's sister joining us. I wonder what her name will be?

I hope it has nothing to do with 3D.
