John G., Anthony has been taking tap for about a year and a half.

He began in an absolute beginner class (if you can walk you can tap) and has moved his way up to what's called "Fast Beginner" two steps up from Absolute Beginner. He loves it and takes class 3 times a week.

It's still a chilly spring here in New York. We've had surprise days in the 50s and it's supposed to return to those numbers by the weekend but right now it's 34.

Good morning, all!

Last night the neighbor above me arrived home with girlfriend around midnight. For once, they actually appeared to be trying to be quiet. It was not successful.

This morning, Kyle Guglielmo is coming to Toyland to sing some of ROBERTA for me. I've narrowed the role to him and to Patrick Cummings, and they're both excellent. Decisions, decisions . . .

TCB Asked

Re:  HELLO, DOLLY!

I have always maintained that had Ms. Streisand allowed them to put her in a fat suit, and allowed them to age her up 15 to 20 years with her make-up; she could have easily scored a second Oscar nomination.  And she could have shown herself to be an actress.

Still, is Gallagher really a Irish-Jewish name?

Her name is Gallagher-Levi. She was Irish Catholic Gallagher and married Epherium (Sp?) Levi a Jewish man which would have been a mixed that probably would have alienated them from both of their families since the story takes place in the 1880's. One would also assume he was an older than Dolly by quite a few years

Ephraim happens to be my Hebrew name.  In fact, on the Israeli cast recording, when Dolly talks directly to Ephraim and says his name in Hebrew (like at beginning of "Before the Parade Passes By") and calls him by his name in Hebrew - exactly the name the rabbis in school called me by - it would really make me sit up and take notice.  For example, Dolly talking directly to "Eph-ra-im" saying his name with such meaning with the Hebrew pronunciation was right there at the beginning of the B side of the LP.

I guess people know my admiration for Stritch .  I even had "stritchfan" as my twitter handle until my twiiter was hacked [amid the online nonsense, it seems] and lost as my handle last October.

If it's Ok, here's my salute to Stritch - which I put yesterday afternoon way down in the comments box under Stephen Holden's  Times article, the article which is at:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/03/a-notable-audience-for-elaine-stritch-at-the-carlyle/

Tune of I Never Know When to Say When -
based a bit loosely on Mr. Holden's touching, insight-filled article, though of course Mr. Holden is obliged to deal with what he sees as the flaws for benefit of people paying the very high prices at the Carlyle for the rest of the run

[Stritch]
I’m having fun in here
A well-sold run in here
Look by the bar, seems every star knows I’m not done in here
They hang on every turn of phrase, every rhyme
That says there’s never a time to call time

I may not toe a line
And I may blow a line
But they don’t jeer, I make them cheer when I forego a line
If I get controversial, it’s so sublime
No, there is never a time to call time
No getting old ain’t no crime
There’s never a time to call time

We saw the marvelous "Passion" at Clasic Stage last night.  Elmore's friend Rob Berman, who I've  gotten to meet at dinner with him,  did a spectacular job conducting, and I hope elmore got to see the show.

Melissa Errico was out  unfortunately.  But Judy Kuhn lived up to the great memories of her Kennedy center oerformance, and Ryan Silverman made me wish I could afford to fly to oregon to see him in "Somewhere in Time" - he is that good.  And such a featured cast - Steve Bogardus, Jeffry denma, Ken Krugman,  and we're right on top of them, like in theior living room the way John Doyle set it up, really meant to be PASSION in-your-face!  In a good way.

Amy Justman  did very very nicely. quite a fine compelling actress.  Of course she is the understudy for both Fosca and Clara because she is so incredibly flexible that she could do either part.   Would love to go back and see Melissa Errico, but it seems to be sold out for the run.

Good morning, all.

This week seems to be both dragging and speeding by quickly. And I seem to be caught in the middle.

Vibes for those with snow. In the wake of the storms yesterday, the temperatures plummeted. I ended up having to turn the heat on again last night, two days after running the AC. I wish the weather would make up its mind. Either that or it has made up its mind and I wish I could adjust to it.

Thursday morning greetings!  I had a delightful evening at the Playhouse in the Park!  Suellyn and I met there for a bite to eat in the cafe and we had a nice catch-up visit.  THE BOOK CLUB PLAY is quite fun - more about it in a separate post...

Traffic into and out of Cincinnati was horrendous and I'm glad I don't have to do that drive every day!

Post by: Ginny on April 04, 2013, 07:03:47 AM
DR TCB - the play would be good for a group that has a strong pool of 30-something actors.  The cast of 3 men and 3 women also double in some character vignettes.  Costuming, set, and props are all current, so it would not be an overly expensive production.  The Playhouse has done some nice book-related lobby displays.  They have post-its on which to write the title of your favorite book and they're posted on a wall.  Also they have a "Bring a book, take a book" table and a coupon tie-in with Joseph-Beth Booksellers.

We watched WINCHESTER '73 last night.  I hadn't seen it in years, and it certainly holds up extremely well.

Anthony Mann and Jimmy Stewart made some terrific Westerns together, and this is perhaps the best of them all.

It has a great cast, including Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis in minor roles.  The black-and-white cinematography is magnificent.

This is terrific...even though the tape quality is not.

I love this score; have the original cast album on CD.

I recall seeing an Equity Waiver production of it in N. Hollywood, probably during the 1980s, with Susan Watson and Chris Costello.

I would certainly need a 3 or 4 hour complication DVD of B movie trailers and another compilation DVD of my favorite Bollywood song picturizations, one from contemporary films and one from vintage films. So there's 3 dvds.

For movies, if I have a copy of something dramatic like, say, ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE and a copy of something funny like INTERNATIONAL HOUSE, I should be ok because  I can watch those over and over (and have) without tiring of them.

Lastly, a DVD of Athletic Model Guild short subjects from the 1950s...just in case I get lonely.

Wait a minute, DR Jrand62.  Are you filing these alphabetically within category, or what exactly?  If they're filed in any kind of strict order, what happens when you acquire something new?  Or are the pages in the binder removable so you can insert new ones easily?  Or are you setting up some kind of numbering system?

We need some more information here.

From DR TCB:
Quote
Back in the mid-seventies, one of the local radio stations in Seattle interviewed one of the executives of the Altoid Company who was visiting Seattle.  The reason he gave for his visit was that when they were calculating their world-wide sales; they discovered that the City of Seattle ranked as the third biggest sales market of all the countries in the world.  So they had sent him here to find out how that was possible.  The reason he found was that when the coffee market exploded in Seattle, people started looking for something to cure coffee breath at work.  Someone stumbled upon Altoids and several coffee chains (i.e. Starbucks) began stocking them at the cash registers of all their stores.  Thus started the Altoid fever in the United States.

Interesting and funny.

It airs again on Sunday at 11:00 AM PDT on the Sony HD station.

In New York, Talkin Broadway excludes people who have pending civil rights suits - and their gay partners and their relatives who have nothing to do with those suits - from their parties.

And this is on West 54th Street in the heart of Broadway in New York City.  Not Georgia.

I've never been a calorie counter -- when I've dieted, it's been something like Atkins in which you stick to a certain type of food but you don't count calories -- but I believe it's time to start.

What prompted this post (in addition to Ye Olde Waistline, of course) is the foodstuff I just ate and very much enjoyed.  I like some of the wraps at Trader Joe's and today I picked up their Wild Pacific Salmon Wrap.  First off, it's delicious and quite hefty and filling.  It consists of salmon, cucumbers, spinach, and yogurt dill sauce in a tomato tortilla.  Okay, if truth be told (and it must, it must), I could eat three of these in a sitting.  But I'm trying to cut out that kind of binge eating.

Anyhoo, I'd noticed that this wrap was notably lower in sodium than their others (some of which have four times the amount), and lower in carbs.  But what I'm not used to looking at is the calories.  Unfortunately, they seem to believe this fine piece of foodstuff consists of two (2) servings.  And that's how they get you.  But the numbers still aren't bad.  Calorie count is 400, or 200 for half.  If you're a stronger person than I, you will eat half of this and save the rest for later.  That's a concept foreign to my way of life, and something I need to work on.

John G., Anthony has been taking tap for about a year and a half.

He began in an absolute beginner class (if you can walk you can tap) and has moved his way up to what's called "Fast Beginner" two steps up from Absolute Beginner. He loves it and takes class 3 times a week.

I read this as "Anthony has been taking a nap for about a year and a half" lOL

Well I have finished 800 DVD's - all in binders in a semblance of order.....have prolly about that many more to go....but I am getting there.  I did Foreign Films and Peplum Films today....

Next week:  Musicals.....

Well we have just SPENT four and one half hours without inner web or cable.  Thanks Comcast!!!

I am dividing the discs first by subject......the alphabetically by title.  I am using regular 3" ring binders, and some sheets that hold 4 disks on each side.  I include the paper from the disks in a sheet protector next to the sheet.  So all binders can be added to....and rearranged as needed.

I am keeping Blu Ray discs in a separate binder that will grow to TWO binders very soon....but easy enough to do.

By definition, in any civil rights case, you're "not wanted" by the people or group denying you access to their [whatever, service, public accomodation, taxi cab, restaurant, place, job, anything].  Yes, you can go eat somewhere else, see the film somewhere else, spend your time doi9ng something else, live soemwhere else, work somewhere else, etc.  But a principle is that if it's seen as discrimination, you don;t have to accept it.

I don't know how it differs in Canada.

The only analogy i can make to a place like Talkin Broadway is imagine a building where the the tenants rae 98% wonderful people but you have a beef with the landlords who feel laws don;t apply to them, so the landlords want you out.

Topic of the Day:

1776 - I would take the extra-extended laserdisc version
Close Encounters
The Fall
The Hobbit - the as-yet unfinished three-part extended version (that counts!)
The Lord of the Rings - the three-part extended version (I consider all three parts to be one movie ;))
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Scrooge
Singing in the Rain
Star Wars (the original theatrical version when it was only "Star Wars" and not "Star Wars, Part IV: A New Hope")

These are what I can think of...I'm sure that there are more that I could choose and more effectively narrow them down to only five, but I didn't)

OK legal eagles - since I only dabble in real estate law as a para...my curiosity is piqued-

Do you have to prove the excluded party is  part of a group that is being discriminated against?  For instance  not allowing in Asians or people over 60  or women or amputees -  is it discrimination if they just don't like one particular person?

I think the only actor that I would allow to play me would be MR BK.

Really Jack, I would have said Alan Arkin.

Back from a three-hour wine dinner. Quite wonderful and I'm sure to miss some sleep tonight in order to catch up with everything before bed.

Best course was tamarind-lacquered duck breast with carrot and ginger confit. Best flavor was a piece of braised rhubarb served alongside lamb.

Five course plus apps, ChasSmith. I think I could have matched your appetite tonight. Oh, how I love my hobby.

I'll choose Seth Rogan.

I really shouldn't say this about another Western Washington boy (not to mention The Christ), but Jim Caviezel isn't a very good actor.

I'm back.  A survivor of JURASSIC PARK.

This never was a film I could get fanatical over.  I even had to be taken to it in its first run; probably never would have gone on my own.  I enjoyed it okay, but never felt the slightest urge to return to it at a theater and I believe I only ever sampled the vaunted DTS laserdisc and later one of the DVDs.  So, it was fine seeing it all the way through tonight on the big screen, and the 3D conversion was fine...but that's it for me, don't need any more, thank you very much.  I did start to get curious about the original Crichton book this time, though, and might seek out an audio version for enjoying in the car.

Hmmm, you are a bigger fan than I am.  Still, I would be interested in seeing it in 3-D.

I have yet to see any of the 3D films, since the rebirth occurred.  I should probably try and see one before I, or they, disappear.

We are having a rash of obituary burgleries in Western Washington.  The thieves scan the obits and then break in to the house during the funeral.  I am shocked that people would do this to people.

Had a lovely meal at the Daily Grill - shrimp cocktail and cedar plank salmon and one piece of bread and butter - about 700 calories all in.  That was it for the day, so I'm having some snacks now.  Then we had a really good rehearsal for Sunday's show.

He's nice to look at...and I really enjoyed him in "Frequency."

Well, tonight we had the women's final preview of "The Reservoir Dogs."  It's interesting.  I prefer the men's version (and not for the preferred man-candy), but they're more intense and the movie was written for male actors.  The women's version is a little slower and not as intense, but tonight's audience seemed to enjoy the women's version much more than the audience last night at the men's version.  It could just be that there was a larger audience tonight with more friends and/or family, so we'll see how it all plays out throughout the run.

It was a good show tonight.  Tomorrow, we open and have the first of many two-show nights!
