Title: IN THE LOOP
Post by: bk on July 25, 2004, 11:59:35 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now in the loop or in the pool and you may now post until the loopy cows come home.  To it, I say.

all of the above plus
Roger Williams, Ray Conniff and the sounds of Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny.
Quite liked the Boston Pops and these days the Erich Kunzel albums are great.

Special mention to the 50 guitars of Tommy "Snuff" Garrett.

The Ferrante & Teicher Lps would have been my firm favourites.

There have been individual "easy listening" or "lounge music" songs/instrumental numbers that I've enjoyed listening to, but there isn't a particular performer that I've been a fan of...unless Barbra Streisand counts.  I don't love her music/interpretations (I don't know if I ever really did "love" her stuff) but I like a lot of what she's done, mostly in her early to middle years, not so much her later stuff.

I had no idea it was after midnight. Then I looked at the clock, always a wise thing to do when you're unsure of the time. Now I have an idea -- which is that it's after midnight.

Tomorrow I drive Dear Daughter downtown to take her interview for her citizenship, I quizzed her on the 100 question test and learned some interesting things. I've now memorized the 13 original states. Did it in a few seconds, amazing Dear Daughter. I taught her the trick of memorizing meaningless lists -- one of my useless talents. Haven't memorized anything in ages and it was actually sort of fun. The 13 original states, from memory BTW, were Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina. Voila.

I used to have a boyfriend who was a big "lounge music" fan. He made me "lounge" compilations which I may still have somewhere. Or not. Perhaps more detail tomorrow on my specific tastes in this music. I'm too tired now.
BTW - I also like lounge music furniture -- leopard chairs and all that. On that note (F#), good-night.

Ah...well I was going to vote for Mouse Ears, but the tiara will be all right as well, DRPANNI!!   ;D

So much going on....I am feeling a bit better, but not sure if I will able to attend rehearsal tonight.  I have let the director know so that she can change her plans...if need be.

Okay....easy listening....ah!!!!!!!!!!

Percy Faith, by all means.  Billy Vaughn.  Ray Conniff.

Here's a name from the past for all of us DR's of a certain age:

Lester Lanin!  He and his orchestra played mostly dance music, but I loved their albums.

The Three Suns and The Kirby Stone Four.

Well.....I loved easy listening music, and I still do.  Martin Denney, of course.  Les Baxter.

I will leave some for other DR's who not up as early as I.  8)

Well it is now 6am and I am getting ready to drive to the airport.  But first I must pick up my passengers.

Had a long day yesterday.  Will try to describe it some time later today.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Morning all!  I'm up and ready to go back to work!  If I get feeling to bad I have a "guaranteed ride home" pass to be drove home at no charge by taxi.  You get them for riding the bus on a regular basis.

I can use mine up to 6 times a year but I never have.

Same reason I didn't bring one... because, as we learned at Cold Stone Creamery, we, dear father, are two clueless fellas!

...well...that and I don't even have one...

Don't feel bad fellows, I had the camera WITH me when I met DR Elmore and forgot to USE it!  ::)

The mind is a terrible thing.

Gotta run.  Have a good day all!

PS:  Could someone please give me the tip on how to quote from a day before and how to do several quotes in one message?  I had that information but lost it with the old computer.  Many thanks!

It's 7:30 AM - aka the time when I'm normally getting out of bed to go to work.

Somehow today, my alarm went off at 5:30 AM and I went about my morning business of getting up, showering and caffeine-ing myself before I glanced at a clock.

Obscenities were flying, let me tell you.

Of course, once I had gotten up showered and caffeine-ed myself, there was no way I could consider going back to bed.

So now it's 7:30 AM and I have made myself a beautiful eggy breakfast with homefries (a weekday luxury) and am just about to read the paper.

Maybe I should do this every morning...

Good morning all
I'm surprised at how quickly my body has adjusted to east coast time.  I woke up this morning bright and early at 7:30 am, no alarm needed.
The wedding yesterday went off without a hitch..well, except the one you'd expect at a wedding, of course :)  (no groaning...)
But the service was short and sweet, and the food was marvelous.  The bride, my new aunt, spent all day cooking up a miriad of delightful dishes, mainly dealing with seafood...scallops, oysters, calamari salad, and salmon galore.  Everything was cooked Italian style...dripping with butter and olive oil and such...I stuffed myself and shan't be able to eat for a month.  Of course i managed to save room for some wedding cake.

Oh, for those who care, here is the end of my airport saga -
After 18 hours in that cursed place, my father finally showed up at 2 pm.  We went down to the rental car center, only to find out that since he hadn't picked up his reserved car on time, and hadn't called ahead to tell them about it, the car had been rented out.  I should add that he could not remember WHICH company he'd rented from, so we visited five different counters, asking if they could check to see if we MIGHT have had a reservation that was gone anyway.  Good thing my father has charm...
So anyway, after finding that no one had any available cars, we ended up at the information booth, asking if there was any other company we might try.  The lady behind the desk took pity on us, called her 26-year-old son, and had him drive us the 50 miles out to the lake.  Talk about depending on the kindess of strangers!  Of course we paid him for his trouble.  He was also rather cute...but of course, I'd been traveling for 31 hours at this point with no shower, wearing the same clothes, so I was in NO position to make a move.  But he was pleasant to look at during the trip :D

So there you have it...a trip that can truly be called an adventure!

I am leaving in a bit to go talk to the advisement people at ASU (Arizona State University in Internet lingo). I always hate talking to the advisement people. Most of the time they don't know what they're talking about.

The lady on the phone told me my appointment was for Monday the 27th. So I don't know if it's on Monday or the 27th. But I'm going today just to make sure.

See what I mean? Even the people answering phones for the advisement people don't know what they're talking about.

Nice story, Ann.

Good morning, everyone! Back from NYC with a big smile on my face: from having a great time in the city but also happy to be back home living a more leisurely paced existence.

I'm going to break up my thoughts about the shows I saw into several different posts over the next several days. One long post is just too dreary to read and gets exhausting (for me) to write.

Also, it's going to take me days to go back and read the notes and posts from the last few days. I did log on briefly last night and finished reading the rest of the posts done on Wednesday, the day I left.

I want to thank DR RLP for clarifying my birthday for DR Jane who was interested. He was correct in stating it is September 3rd. His is September 2nd, and how ironic that my college roommate's birthday was ALSO September 2nd. Talk about coincidences!

On today's Topic of the Day, I go along with many of those already named. I adored Ferrente and Teicher and Roger Williams. Being a (mediocre at best) pianist, naturally I would have been drawn to them, and my aunt, who adored them too, used to take me with her to see them in concert when they'd come to Charlotte. I know I must have seen F&T four times. Percy Faith: just lush and beautiful music.

My first NYC story actually occurred the last night we were there.

Some of you know the story of my frustration with trying to score ASSASSINS tickets, succeeding, and then finding that the show would end the week before I got to NYC. So what to see? My friends and I decided we'd go to THE FROGS (which was sold out; I checked) and try to score cancellation tickets on Saturday night.

As some of you know, the show actually opened on Thursday (this may have been discussed in Friday's posts; I haven't read them yet but I will) to fairly bad notices. We mulled the situation over all day Friday and Saturday and finally decided Saturday afternoon that we'd rather see a show that got great reviews and awards than one with wonderful actors but bad notices (since it WAS our last night in NYC). So, we picked I AM MY OWN WIFE. The box-office fellow was from NC and gave us a deal on the tickets saying the theater was running a special sale and we paid $50 apiece for the excellent second row mezzanine/first balcony seats.

The show was quite interesting. I have to shame-facedly admit that before seeing this play, I knew NOTHING at all about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, sort of the Quentin Crisp of his/her time and place. While I found the story very, very interesting and Jefferson Mays simply wonderful playing Charlotte and lots of other characters, I didn't find it compelling. Interesting without being gripping, I guess you'd say. Charlotte was a strong willed but quietly sedate person, so there were no VIRGINIA WOOLF displays of volcanic emotion during the show from the central character, and maybe that's what I wanted. At any rate, it was a good show, a great performance, and featured a fascinating set design and marvelous direction moving the single actor around a ingeniously designed and decorated set.

BTW, our weather during the four days ran to total gamut. The first day was hot and steamy, a (for me) typical NYC summer day. Friday was the day of torrential downpours. Even with an umbrella, there is no way not to get soaked while traversing the streets with deep puddles and gutters always overflowing. Saturday was overcast and cool, Sunday the clouds began to give way to sun but temps were still below normal. So in all, it was the most pleasantly cool July weekend I've ever spent in NYC.

I had one Lester Lanin album (on Epic, I think) - a Latin B'way album that was quite nice.  I, too, love Billy May but think of him more as Big Band than lounge, although I suppose he could fit in either world.  I liked Roger Williams, too, but not as much as Ferrante and Teicher.  I also liked Peter Nero quite a bit.  And Jackie Gleason's albums are wonderful - lush, and gooey and great-sounding.

I really don't listen to "Easy Listening" now, but I used to like Ferante & Teicher, Peter Nero and the Norman Luboff choir.  Now the only time I listen to that kind of music is when I on the phone and put on "hold" or when I am in an elevator.

We attended a rather dull wedding Friday on the Delaware River.  Well, since it was raining, it was moved inside a mansion.  Joy was the hit of the party, her dance floor energy raising everything by several notches.  Those aware of my song "I Can't Marry You" know how we feel about wedding traditions.  What was most interesting was meeting the groom's aunt, uncle and 10-year-old cousin from Japan.  The groom also had an uncle and his Japanese boyfriend from Vancouver, who gave great massages.  All the aforementioned elevated the affair in some way.

I'd always said we'd return home either Sunday or Monday, but, for some reason, they booked us into a hotel 20 miles in the wrong direction, just for Friday night.  I didn't arrive at this hotel until two a.m., and, upon waking, was told we had to check out in a half an hour.  No rooms at any inn in Bethlehem (hmm, sounds familiar) and we ended up staying at a neighbor's house.  Seeing this house proved the highlight of the trip, as it's an eighteenth century farmhouse with antique cabinetry hiding things like refrigerators, etc.  Now THAT was the bed-and-breakfast experience one might had sought, had one been allowed to make one's own accommodation plans.

At the day-after-party was the woman who'd played the piano for my 1998 revue, Lunatics and Lovers (I may have the date wrong).  Turns out she has a little boy who'd toured in Ragtime and I told her I can't listen to, or play the song "Our Children" without flooding my face with tears.  How she managed to sit through it, with her son playing one of the children being sung about, I'll never know.

Good Morning!

-I had a hard time waking up myself today too... My travel alarm clock has an "unlimited" snooze alarm...  If it didn't, I'd probably still be in bed at this time.

Growing up, I would pull out my parents' collections of Mantovani Strings, 101 Strings, various Reader's Digest collections, and a some interesting Columbia Treasury collections.  I always seemed to gravitate toward Johnny Mathis singing "Little Green Apples", and an instrumental version of "Hey, Jude".  And I still try to play Roger Williams' version of "Autumn Leaves" every now and then. ;)

Well, time for me to get my day started and get some work done.

Busy weekend.

Yesterday was crazy.

Today is my sister's 2nd wedding anniversary.

Her husband's sister was in town with her husband and kids and stayed at my sister's new house for a month.

So we (the hubby's sister and I) decided to buy them a really nice expensive painting they wanted.

They had seen this painting quite a few times at the Costco near their house.  But every time they went it was either sold or they realized it cost too much.

On Friday my sis had casually mentioned that they had moved the paintings to a different Costco.  And on Sunday Joyce (the hubby's sis) and I (and her son and hubby) went in search of it.

We had to be at the movies at 2:45pm for a 3:10pm showing.  And we didn't know where the Costco was.  And we didn't even know if the painting would be there.

But at 1pm off we went.
Title: Re:IN THE LOOP
Post by: Jennifer on July 26, 2004, 10:59:48 AM
Okay so off we went.  I knew the address and which highway it was on. But I'd never been there before.

Right away we were lucky.

I wasn't sure whether to get off at the first exit. I did, and it was the right choice.

Then we had to either go right or left at the exit. I chose left. That was right.

Then the Costco was RIGHT THERE at the corner of the highway.  ANd when I drove in, there was a parking spot right in front of the door.

So we were feeling great.

Then we walked in and THE painting was right at the door.

Things were looking good.

Only problem was it was too big to fit into my car.

It was now 2pm. And I thought it would take 30 minutes to get to the movies.

So we had 2 people we could call.  One had a van and was going to the movie. But it was out of his way.

The other was coming in that direction (to the movie) but we weren't sure if it would fit and we couldn't reach him.

Anyhow after leaving 4 messages #2 answered. And the painting fit.

And we left at 2:45pm but still made it to the movies by 3pm.

And it was all worth it when we all went to my sister's place after.  We snuck the painting in. And then joyce said there was a hole in their wall. They came running out and when they saw the painting my sis had tears running down her cheek. And so did I.

They put it up and it is so beautiful.  It was expensive. But I'm so glad we did it.

My favorite "easy listening" performer is this Liberace wannabe named Emilio at the Flamingo in Vegas. He got fired for punching his fist through a slot machine, so he's not there any more. He had a really cheesey synthesizer and an even cheesier smile and he made a lot of mistakes.

Memo to HHW Ambassador to Fine Arts AKA DRJay:

We expect a full report!

Renée Fleming is reaching out to new audiences via pop, jazz and a book despite feeling “it’s risky to step outside of the mold,” she says.
(Jennifer S. Altman / For The Times)

Extracts from LA Times (http://www.calendarlive.com/music/cl-et-breslauer26jul26,2,7189366.story):

Quote
On a high note

Soprano Renée Fleming's star is soaring as she pushes the boundaries of divadom.
By Jan Breslauer
Special to The Times

Jul 26 2004

The celebrated American soprano, who performs at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday, has triumphed at the Metropolitan Opera and throughout Europe, earning comparisons to such greats as Maria Callas and raves from critics not known for gushing. She is widely hailed as one of opera's biggest female stars today, although the praise has not been unanimous.

Fleming has provoked naysayers not only because of her glamour and slick marketing but also because she resists the pressure to specialize. She has gone from a bestselling "Bel Canto" album to a CD of show tunes with fellow opera singer Bryn Terfel. Up next is a Handel album, followed by a jazz CD.

"It's risky to step outside of the mold," she says. "We risk alienating people who appreciate what we do. Opera has a small niche audience anyway, a sometimes voraciously aficionado-style audience."

Fleming may have alienated a few purists along the way, but she has certainly achieved fame beyond the opera house. People know her face from Rolex ads, and her voice from the 2003 movie "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." She inspired the main character in Ann Patchett's 2002 novel "Bel Canto," a dessert by master chef Daniel Boulud and a newly minted iris. She's been featured in media outlets where opera singers are seldom seen, from People magazine and Vogue to "60 Minutes," CNN and more.

Fleming is not the only contemporary opera singer to attempt mainstream visibility. While a number of artists have made recordings or done projects aimed at a broader audience, it was the Three Tenors juggernaut that broke the mold for crossover of this kind.

Los Angeles Opera general director Plácido Domingo, the only one of the three tenors still performing at a high level, has been doing crossover for decades. Back in the '70s, he appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and was spotted by record producer Milton Okun. Okun, who now sits on the L.A. Opera board of directors, approached Domingo, and the result was the 1981 Domingo-John Denver duet and album "Perhaps Love." Since then, Domingo has recorded many nonopera albums.

However, there is a distinction to be made between opera singers such as Fleming and Domingo singing one-shots with the likes of Elton John and John Denver, or even making whole albums of other types of music, and pop singers who perform opera — so-called crossover artists, such as Andrea Bocelli.

As the market for the Bocellis of the world has grown, the music companies' attitudes toward opera singers making nonopera recordings has changed.

"When I started recording, every opera singer had a crossover project: music theater or cabaret music," Fleming says. "And in the years since then, we haven't been encouraged to do that at all."

Her much-delayed pet project is a jazz album that she expects to make in August, for release next year. "I just want to do this one jazz record, that's all I want to do," she says. "As a lyric soprano, I have a large repertoire that can be recorded: I'm not a specialist. It was hard to find time to do it, to make space in the schedule. But it's finally happening. Unless it falls apart again."

As any opera singer who wants to have a big career these days must, Fleming continues to pay close attention to the "branding" and the art. Particularly since she sang the 1998 debut of André Previn's "A Streetcar Named Desire," there has been consistent interest in Fleming. In addition, there was a surge of attention this past fall, when she opened the Met season with a widely lauded turn as Violetta in "La Traviata."

She's expecting another busy fall, with the release of her newest Decca CD, "Renée Fleming: Handel," and a book, "The Inner Voice," due out in November from Viking Penguin.

"It's not an autobiography," the singer says. "The framework is autobiographical in the sense that it tells my story, but it's really a process-oriented book about how to learn how to sing, how to build a career."

At the Met, she'll star in a new production of Handel's "Rodelinda." Until then, she is continuing a tour of major American music festivals, including Tuesday's Bowl appearance, where her program will likely include selections from "Rodelinda" along with a variety of other opera fare and some musical theater songs.

In January, she will return to the West Coast for a recital at Los Angeles Opera, where she will make her company debut the following season, 2005-06, in "La Traviata."

Here's a name from the past for all of us DR's of a certain age:

Lester Lanin!  He and his orchestra played mostly dance music, but I loved their albums.

Ah, yes "Gentleman Of a Certain Age" - sure beats "old fart".

This GOCA not only remembers the LPs of dear Lester, he danced at A Debutante Ball to the melodious sounds of his orchestra  - partnered by the future mother of his children.

When I purchased my ticket for Miss Renee Fleming's concert tomorrow evening at the Hollywood Bowl, I anticipated that there would be a good amount of orchestral filler and Miss Fleming's repertoire would be on the fairly light side, with a heavy dose of "pops."

Well lookie what's on the program:

Mozart: Overture, The Marriage of Figaro
Handel: Morrai sì, l’empia tua testa, from "Rodelinda"
Handel: Ombre piante, urne funeste, from "Rodelinda"
Bizet: Danse Bohème from "Carmen"
Massenet: Adieu, notre petite table, from "Manon"
Massenet: Obéissons quand leur voix appelle” (Gavotte) , from "Manon"
Wagner: Prelude to Act III of "Lohengrin"
Strauss: Morgen (Op. 27, No. 4)
Strauss: Zueignung (Op. 10, No. 1)
Rodgers: Carousel Waltz
Traditional, arr. Grusin: Shenandoah
Traditional, arr. Grusin: Water is Wide
Porter: So in Love, from "Kiss Me Kate"
Rodgers and Hammerstein: You'll Never Walk Alone, from "Carousel"
Verdi: Overture to "Les vêpres siciliennes"
Catalani: Ebben?… Ne andro lontana, from "La Wally"
Puccini: O mio babbino caro, from “Gianni Schicchi”
Verdi: Merci, jeunes amies, from "Les vêpres siciliennes"

Faithfully reported by your voracious aficianado.

So, we picked I AM MY OWN WIFE. ..

My View: It is not Charlotte but Doug (the reporter/writer) who is the real protagonist - and it is in the closing dialog between him and John that the play reaches it's emotional crescendo. As is quoted in the intro to the written script:

Quote
Whatever you do, don't write a play about history. Write a play about your love affair with Charlotte von Mahlsdorf

While I'm not familiar with The Plum Tree, the mention of PK Chang's and Cold Stone Creamery brings on a rant.

Don't you just hate it when some mom-and-pop operation, that's been doing fine for years, suddenly faces competition from a big national or multi-national chain and is put out of business?  It's the individual entrepreneurs that make a city great, not the ubiquitous chain stores.  I try to avoid the latter as much as possible.  Today, in fact, I shook the hand of a new bookseller in the neighborhood.

He's across the street from Columbia's Barnes & Noble (am I right that Barnes & Noble started out as NYU's bookstore?) and the book suppliers sell to Barnes & Noble at a much lower price than they do to independants like him.  Of course, that's because Barnes & Noble racks up a high-volume amount of, er, volumes, but often it seems the system is rigged against the little guy.

P.F. I remember looking on my parents' 78 rpm records when I was a kid and under the name of the song and the artist performing it, it would say "Fox Trot" or "Jazz." Did people really care back then what tempo or type of music was being played? I assume if they bought the record, they knew what they were getting before purchasing.

Nice pic, Dear Reader Jane.

Question:  Why do the apes have their own palace in Bratislava?

That's an interesting observation DR Jay.  Here's what the guide book says:

"A relatively obscure fact that we learned during our travels is that the old Slovenian kings were descended from apes that migrated to Europe from Africa in the 5th century BC.  At the time of the migration the land was populated with simian-wannabes like the Greeks and Romans--thus it was fairly easy for the roving gorillas to assume positions of leadership in the lands that became Slovenia.

(BTW, it is rumored that Nero's great grandmother was an ape.  Apes are notoriously tone deaf and Nero probably inherited his lack of ability from the ape-gene transfer.)

Today in Bratislava this little-known biological artifact can be witnessed in the Bratislavan saying "king see, king do" and, of course, the name of the royal residence: The Primate's Palace."

The above excerpt was posted by DR Jane's husband who assumes no responsibility for how other DRs subsequently use this information.

Also...he says "Hi guy" ;) to DR Jay!

Jay, I knew you would know immediately it was Keith. :)

Noel, I hate it when the chain isn’t worthy of the store that has been eliminated, such as The Plum Tree.  We are trying to keep chains out of our little town.  So far there are three Starbucks and one Blockbuster.  I don’t mind, in fact I like the little Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.  I don’t believe any of these have put another store out of business.

Bruce, a Cold Stone opened up in Brentwood down the street from the Ben and Jerry’s my brother frequents.  He went in the first night to see what the fuss was about and didn’t care for it.  In the beginning they were so busy he feared his B & J’s would go out of business.  So far it hasn’t happened and all is well in the world with my brother.

Welcome back MATTH!  Sounds like you had a good time in the Big Apple.  I remember seeing those tempo markings on 78 RPM recordings as well.  I just assumed it was so you would know what dance to do to the song...LOL.

THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG....well, I think Holden is very handsome and I love the on location photography.  Nancy Kwan is so beautiful, but she is such a BAD actress...LOL.  And for me the movie (and probably the play as well) makes the mistake of treating a brothel like a sorority house - with all the stereotypes in residence.  Most of Kwan's lines seem to have been looped so this was her second chance at voicing the performance, and she still misses most of the time.

The best acting I ever saw her do was in her Pearls of the Orient bath oil commmercials that ran and ran and ran several years ago.

Good Afternoon!

I just had to take a break from looking at, placing and playing all those little black dots of music on the page.  I'm at the "detail" stage now, and I just have to make sure not to drive myself crazy with all those details.  If I keep up my current pace, I should have a complete book for the show by the end of the week.  *I've done charts - lead sheets - for a bunch of songs, and now I want to actually write out full piano-vocal parts/arrangements.  Sometimes it feels like slow going, but then I look at the clock and it's actually earlier than I thought it would be - that's a good thing. :)

I'm not a big fan of Cold Stone Creamery either.  The appeal of the novelty of having your ice-cream "made" right there on the marble slab, as well as some of the songs and "skits" the scoopers put on, did draw me into the store initially, but after tasting the ice cream...  It's just has no depth of flavor to me.  I taste more sugar than flavor in their base ice creams.  And the price/mark up.... eh!  *However, I'm still appalled at the price of a single scoop of Haagen Daaz at their stores - it's practically the same price as a pint at the grocery store!

Another bit of info. Mayor James Hahn's nickname is Slim Jim.
As for the citizenship appointment...
Rachel's appointment was set for 12:45. She got in at 1:30. Not a huge surprise. She passed with flying colors - she heard several people around her being told to come back and try again because they FAILED. However, she can't get sworn in until after she comes back from Study Abroad. She leaves on Aug, 17 and the next swearing in day is August 18. Oh well.

THE TRUTH IS OUT!

Broadway.com (http://www.broadway.com/template_1.asp?CI=40446&CT=3) tells all:

Quote
Solitaire and the Solitary Writer
by Julie White

I have now remembered that I have a very hard time writing anything. I tend to turn on the computer, go to Payday Freecel Solitaire and say to myself "just one more game, and then I will start writing" for such an embarrassingly long time that when I finally begin whatever I am attempting to write I am filled with self-loathing. Today, for some reason, I cannot open Payday Freecel. Not that I haven't tried. I think my husband has so successfully blocked all pop-up ads on the computer that it won't let me play... so I have to write this. I have a friend in L.A. who is a successful screenwriter and confided to me that she also has to deal with this problem. Her solution is not to allow herself to wash her hair until she finishes what needs to get done. So finally her nasty head forces her to get on with it. I think the longest she lasted was a week.

OK, Panni - fess up!

DRJOSE that is wonderful news!  Onstage - will you be wearing white tie and tails?  A cutaway?  A tuxedo.

I think you should wear a tuxedo coat, flat shirt, tie, and a kilt!

TOD:

Is Carmen Dragon too high-brow to be considered "easy listening'?

If our voracious afficiando was out and about the Hollywood Hills 40 odd years ago he would no doubt have tales to tell.

John Henken, writing for the Hollywood Bowl (http://www.hollywoodbowl.org/about/piece_detail.cfm?id=1248) reports:

Quote
Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and '60s, recorded prolifically with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. His evocative arrangements - here of "Across the Wide Missouri," aka "Shenandoah," an American sea chanty much associated with the Western pioneer movement, and the powerful 1895 patriotic anthem "America the Beautiful" - are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world.

der Brucer

Note: Since he did the score for the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" he can't be pure high brow.

Sadly, no. At least not that I remember...you see they had a lot of this stuff called "champagne" ....

der Brucer

By the Bye - Lanin actually had quite a few orchestras touring at the some time ; "Music by the Lester Lanin Orchestra" didn't quarantee Lester Lanin.

Your opinion of I Am My Own Wife is very similar to my Aunts and Uncle. They were looking for something to see in NYC and it was one of the plays I suggested. She had the exact same opinion as you did. Interesting. I think now I will strike it off my possible play list when I go to NYC in 10 days

There was a musical fest as as well as a the comedy fest in Montreal while I was there. I sat next to one of the singers from the music fest when I fly to LGA on my way home to Florida. I asked him if I should go see Wicked or Avenue Q. he had seen both several times and like them both. But I think he was leaning to Avenue Q.

For those that have seen both which ones would you recommend?

As for my trip to Montreal there was never enough time to do everything I wanted to do. But I made time to see my great Aunt who at 94 is still sharp as tack. She is the last of the patriarchs who are still alive. She is my father's mother sister. I try to make a point to visit her every time I am in Montreal or at least calling her.

I also was able to reconnect with a friend of mine who I haven;t seen in maybe nine years, We lost touch and by fluke whe made contact and I spent the afternoon with him and later with his partner. We picked up as if we never left off. It was so nice. It is a shame that so many of my good friends live far away from me and we only talk on the phone or via email. I wish I had the time and money to travel where they are and see each and everyone of them.

I have subscribed since the very first issue and now I am thinking of not renewing. Has aone have any thoughts on this?

DR Jane, love the picture of you and Craig! Your son is very, very handsome, and you are way too cute...your smile is so great!!

I don't mind chain stores at all, in fact many of my favorite stores are chain stores...Fry's, Target, etc. Many chain stores started out as Mom and Pop stores. I shop at whichever store has the product I want at the price I can afford and a best selection.

Now as for a quaint town like Ashland I would not want the big chains coming in and ruining the quaintness...I would want them in the outskirts or maybe nearby in Medford, or maybe Talent, and keep the downtown more local business oriented...makes it more fun.

But my buddy Mark loves the place!

I forgot to mention today's topic. Back in the days when I collected show album LPS I collected alot of instrumental versions because sometimes they would have material that was not recorded on the original cast LP. Li'l Abner instrumental is like that and has 2 or 3 cuts that did not make the cast lp.

Sometimes it would be a broadway season where there were flop musicals that did not get recorded and this way for example I had three songs from Let 'em Ride on one LP.

One of the more interesting cuts was an instrumental version of Camelot that had the cut called "The Quests" which was music used for a scene that was cut from the show early in the Toronto run when show ran over 4 hours long!!

MBarnum you are so sweet.

I am very happy when the chain stores go to Medford, just don’t want them here.  I don’t think Talent wants them either.  They are working on becoming the next quaint town in the area.  It helps they are getting the Ashland overflow.  When The Gap moved into the mall is made the front page of the paper-LOL.  At least two of the Starbucks are in older buildings and the third is in Albertson’s so they are not tough on the eyes.  I have friends who have petitioned for Trader Joe’s to come to the area.

Next time I pass the Cold Stone in Medford I will have to check out if they really sing or not. :D

Between Avenue Q and Wicked, I'd pick Avenue Q but it really depends on what you're interested in, in a theatre experience.

I like to laugh, and so Avenue Q, a little musical with heart, would be my choice.  But, other people like a certain "bigness" in a Broadway musical.  For them, there's Wicked.  Also for people who like power belting.  And stars with recognizable names (George Hearn, Joey McIntyre, etc.).  And an interesting plot.  So you see, I'm saying Wicked has much to recommend it, for people who care about such things.  Me, I'd take those "unknown" puppet-masters over the denizens of Oz anyday.

More on the saga of the kitchen store:

The co-worker with whom I had the arguement tried to side-swipe me, setting up a complaint against me with the manager re store proceedures.  It didn't take.

I learned, in a conversation with another co-worker tonight, that she regularly tries to set up her co-workers in little ambushes, to lower their standing in the manager's eyes.  She's done this with the last four managers.  All she does is cause aggravation.

I survived twenty-three years of office politics in a big office, I can easily survive this.

Oh, Michael, what a nice thing to say!!!

About any similarity between Thighs and Kritzer: Many of you already know that BK and I grew up in the same neighborhood at the same time, attended the same schools, and that our parents were good friends, and my dad's brother and BK's dad were in business together in the Kiru restaurant. My very first professional revue was the first one Mr. Kimmel directed - and getting the daily news about this current revue brings back such excellent memories. Even as a young artist, BK had a unique style with the music he loves, and uncommon insight into the soul of a lyric. I do envy his What-If cast!!

Welcome back, Michael. We'll be in touch.

You're welcome.  The fact is, your computer problems are the only reason I've passed you in posts.

Is the only reason?

There's something wrong with the tense in that sentence.  Problems are the only.  How can "only" be "problems," plural?  Doesn't read right.
