DR Doug, have you ever heard of--or worn-- Hotter shoes? Hotter is a UK company that makes COMFORTABLE shoes for men and women (can you imagine?), which are also stylish. (!) I was so bowled over by this novel idea that I took advantage of their promotion and bought some. I wore them for the first time today. They felt great.

For those of us who are Stateside, www.hotterusa.com. For DR Doug, www.hotter.com. About the price of Ecco.

DR Jeanne. I've never heard of Hotter shoes before. Interesting to know. I usually buy Hush Puppies which I find very comfortable.

Actually, today's birthday person is former DR JulieC40 (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=14802), who is not the same person as the very errant and truant DR Julie (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=2163).

If I remember correctly, JulieC40 came to HHW by way of JMK.

Good morning, all!

It's another Toyland day; I have to wait for this UPS shipment - AGAIN! - and I've got the last couple of 2nd proof scores to check out.

DR JohnG, I saw the 2nd to last performance of RAGS: after the first act, the feeling was "why is this wonderful show closing?"  Then Act Two answered the question: it was a mess. The cast was great with one exception, my late friend Larry Kert, who didn't want to be the villain, and that was his role in the piece, and his material wasn't very good. There were too many missteps:
  1. Tammany Hall doesn't like Jews but needs their vote, and the political scene ends with all these snobby Catholics and Protestants happily dancing the hora with Stratas' character leading them? Isn't it fun to be a poor Jew from the lower east side? The scene should have been her first clue her husband wasn't an honorable person and a political pawn.
  2. Stratas' character has been compromising in every way to keep herself and her son safe; I believe she should have been the character who dies, if anyone needs to, standing up to the rioters at the union meeting.
  3. There never was much drama to the Stratas-Kert-Mann triangle.
  4. Killing off Judy Kuhn's character in the Triangle fire wasn't a good move.

It was a wonderful cast and I wished the show much good, It deserved a run of several hundred performances like TENDERLOIN or other "almost hit" shows, but it couldn't run with the funding it had.

I didn't know there was such thing as a good Victor Mature movie

I always think about Groucho Marx's remark about VM in the film Samson & Delilah

"Well, there's just one problem, C.B. No picture can hold my interest where the leading man's tits are bigger than the leading lady's."

As for Richard Widmark

Of all the films I've see where he was the lead I would have to choose "Madigan"

Thanks for the response, Larry, on "Rags." I agree with most everything you said, except I found the mistakes rather easy to forgive -- but, then, I already knew the score, so I knew how that music would help things. I can imagine not knowing the music would be a drawback with all that tsuris going on. Yet there have been shows with worse books or storylines that have run longer than "Rags." "Starlight Express," for one.

Hi Everyone:

DR Druxy, I listened to your sons rendition of Cat Stevens's "Wild World".  I thought his version was very good.  Then I went online and listened to "Wherever the bad things go" which I really enjoyed. He is very talented. I also write and sing ballads and play acoustic guitar.

In my younger years I loved Cat Stevens.  In fact I wrote a essay on the song "Where do the Children Play" in high school.

I tell you, this project is so frustrating.  The missing cue is still missing and we're now pulling the separate dialogue, music, and effects tracks, where hopefully the music will be clean enough to use.  I've gone this far and we may as well go the rest of the way - but we really should have announced this three weeks ago and now it's going to be another week or two for sure and I am SCREWED because it's going to push our payments three weeks further down the line than they should be.  I have three other projects that are mastered but the liner notes are not done and approvals will take at least two weeks.

DR John G butter is vegetarian but not vegan.  The vegan butters are pretty good.  When Craig was living here I used to use his vegan butter & mayo.  The mayo was excellent & if it came in smaller sizes I would continue to use it.

Did you make your own taco shells?  I used to fry up tacos and serve them with a large selection of fillings, including mushrooms, to choose from.

The regionals for American Ninja Warrior are in Baltimore on April 19-20.  Patrick thinks he'll be competing there; if not he'll be in Miami in May.  If he's in Baltimore I'm planning on going.

TOD: The only time I remember seeing Richard Widmark is that I Love Lucy episode mentioned previously.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a Victor Mature movie.

There are actually one or two Tex-Mex places in town that have begun offering lettuce or cabbage instead of corn, which is smart given how high the diabetes rate is here.

You should see Road House. Ida Lupino plays a drifter who lands in a tiny town. She gets a job singing at the local bar/bowling alley. She falls for Cornel Wilde and Widmark falls for her. Celeste Holm is there, too. It's a great movie.

Great idea.  Is the cabbage raw for that crunchy texture?  What kind of mushrooms did you use?  It sounds good.  Onions with the mushrooms might be good too.

Back from rehearsal.  Returned to a couple of nice packages in the mail:

My YOUNG GIRLS have arrived!  Just checked the disc, hitting a couple of chapter stops, and it looks (and sounds) fantastic.  Hard to believe this will be only my second Jacques Demy film.  (I've ordered US DVDs for two other Demys:  THE PIED PIPER and BAY OF ANGELS.)

I wanted to watch that tonight but there's some stuff going on that might prevent it.

Also got the UK Blu-rays of (HORROR OF) DRACULA, PEEPING TOM, and LA GRANDE ILLUSION.

Be back later.

The cabbage is raw and adds crunch. I used cremini mushrooms from Costco.

I decided not to do the rest of the picking up tonight.   If the merry maids are here at 8:30 am, I'll have them do the bathrooms and kitchen while I'm picking up the dining room and  living room. The cats will be relegated to my bedroom.  I'll finish cleaning that myself

Think I'll try to get some sleep.  I've been awake since 5:00 AM when the lightning started, the cats jumpedn the bed and something boom, banging into the house. I have no idea what it was, there was nothing out there when I got up.  So I've been awake since 5:00AM and lord knows what I'll find in the AM.  At least we still have power right now.  I have the furnace cranked up so it will be warm in here if the power goes.
