Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Greasy, and now it is time for you to post until the Greasy cows come home.

Good morning, all.

An okay sleep and a mother of a dream that included several of my old common dream threads which I haven't had in at least a couple of years.  It was kind of fun having them, and waking up and recalling them!

Okay, so I have no life.

Coffee!

TOD:

This is an easy one -- I have even less experience with GREASE, and far less knowledge of it, than BK.

Never had an interest in it, have never seen a stage production, and have only ever caught one or two scenes of the film which I also never had an interest in.

I'm not particularly proud of that.  It's so immensely popular that I should at least get on board and gain some knowledge of it.  I have so far failed at that.

Did I post last night that I watched Demy's BAY OF ANGELS?  Loved it.  I guess you wouldn't say it's the equal of, say, a BREATHLESS, but it's a noir-ish French New Wave film that holds its own just fine, and boy do I love discovering those.   If you only know Demy from the likes of CHERBOURG and ROCHEFORT, this is a different animal.

My brothers and one sister and I saw GREASE the night it opened at the (now gone) Eastwood Theatre....on a BIG SCREEN with great stereo sound!  That was the theatre that STAR WARS had played at exclusively for many months.  The afternoon before we went, we had seen the movie cast on the Dinah Shore talk show, and they played some clips....and it looked like so much fun.

We loved it!  AND it was 50's night and anyone who dressed up in a 50's outfit got in FREE.  And I got in FREE.....and didn't know there was going to be a contest!  After that, I bought some new clothes.

We saw GREASE on tour starring Miss Sally Struthers as Miss Lynch and she was great.  Adrian Zmed was Danny.....and Mackenzie Phillips was Rizzo. Someone named Kelli Bond Severson was Sandi.

No movie songs in this one.  It was fun....

Sally came out at the beginning and talked to the audience like it was a reunion....then she walked offstage and through the rows asking people their names...and when they told her....she would say things like...."Oh, yes....you were a troublemaker...." and "I never did like you..."  and "Didn't you get pregnant your senior year?"  Then she got back onstage and saw some people coming in late and said to them.... "You never were on time.  You were supposed to be here when the little hand was on eight and the big hand was on twelve...."

Another tour, that I can't find my program for featured Ralph Malph from HAPPY DAYS as Vince Fontaine.

Good morning, all! I slept until 8:00 and I'm on my first cup of coffee. I've been to the laundromat with the laundry for the week. I'll spend the morning cleaning, vacuuming, and mopping, and have the rest of the weekend at my leisure to work on DEAREST ENEMY mixing thoughts and the ROBERTA score and dialogue.

In 1972, I had my choice of seeing a preview of a new musical GREASE, for which mu college friend David James was assistant to the costumer, or TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA with the original cast. I had come to NYC to see TWO GENTLEMEN, so I saw that while my other Miami University friends supported David and went to GREASE. For the entire weekend I heard that I had missed something really wonderful: a complete distortion of all the "good-girl reforms delinquent" movies and tv programs, raunchy and rude, and that I would have loved it. At that point, no one knew how GREASE would fare on Broadway from its Chicago origins, and it turned out to be a hit. I loved the cast album, and I saw the first national tor in Cincinnati: Candace Earley as Sandy, Judy Kaye as Rizzo, John Travolta as Doody, and (I think) Jeff Conaway as Danny. It was fantastic.

And, because it was so cleaned up and toned down, I detested - and still loathe - the film. John Waters should have directed it.

I'm about to leave for a literacy fundraiser brunch at which I expect to see many friends.  When I get home we'll pack up and head for Lima, where we'll be met by Rob and Mary Linda.  Tomorrow morning the two of them and I will head about an hour north from there for the baptism of great-niece Rachel while Richard conducts his regular Sunday service.  We'll all rendezvous back here at home later in the afternoon.

TOD:

In all my years of reviewing theater, I've never seen the show live.

I first saw the movie only in the last couple of years when I bought the DVD at Big Lots. I enjoyed seeing a few of the people in it, including old acquaintance Jamie Donnelly, but found the movie to be nothing much. And the stars are sooooo old that you'd think all of these kids were in remedial classes for a very long time.

I prefer my high school musicals to be more like "Best Food Forward" and "Too Many Girls." Or "Cry-Baby" and "Hairspray."

And I think Elmore is right: John Waters directing the movie would have been ideal.

I've only seen the film version.

Once that you can get passed the fact that people were way to old for the parts (Stockyward Channing was 34!) it was an enjoyable film

There is a stage version of Grease now available (I think) that goes back to the original concept when it was originally done in Chicago. A lot tougher with the language, slightly different story and different songs. I know that the surviving member of the writing team work on this.

Danny dies in a knife fight with a member of the Shark's gang.

I'm up - I didn't get to bed until two-thirty, so I got a good night's sleep.  Barry Pearl is on his way over so no jog till this afternoon, but it's very overcast outside right now anyway.  He's coming here because his props person is a bit of a disaster and they have stuff that looks very silly - so they needed two period radios - one transistor and one set - I have both from the 1950s - a bakelite set and one of the first transistor radios ever made, so I'm lending them.

Back from the fundraiser.  It was fun and festive.  The silent auction and various raffles brought in $4700.  I think the menu planners forgot the entree - we had lettuce salad, fruit salad, biscuits, and baked potato halves with assorted toppings.  There were trays of small pastries on the tables.

And here she is with a buddy scooping up tadpoles in a puddle to move them to a spot in the stream that had more water.

I think it is great you rescue tadpoles and butterflies.

I always thought that Wally had weird friends.  First there was Eddie and then there was Lumpy.  I think that Wally needed an "Friend intervention."

T.O.D.

The first time I saw GREASE, it was the film version.  I suppose there were stage versions both in Seattle and Tacoma, but I had never seen them.  So, when I finally saw a stage production, I was disappointed with it because I missed the songs.  Now you can't find a production that doesn't throw in all the movie songs.  Of course the same thing happens with SOUND OF MUSIC and CABARET.  I miss what they cut from those shows in order to insert the new songs.

The food at Jekyl & Hydes was Ok - I had a turkey  swiss burger with grilled mushrooms, onions and peppers on a freshbaked  bakery style roll -  it was really nice  and I had the truffle fries which were very tasty - the Vixter just had a regualr hamburger  and fries --

The dessert was a pice of chocolate cake - the flipped in upside down in a cup so the icing was at the bottom and put whipped cream on top

oh yeah -  we won't be going back - by NY standards I guess it wasn't bad - $15 - $16  for a burger and fries but for a special occasion it was fun - the Vixter's birthday is the end of this month -  I had a discount code for the Pippin tickets - we had nice seats -  orchestra 10th row, side but only 2 seats in from the aisle - I paid - after the show I picked up what I first thought was the Vixters ticket from the floor - but I realized it was the ticket of the woman who had the seat next to her - her ticket cost $68 more that our tickets did- and the guy in front of me paid  $30 more for parking than I did  -- gotta love those online  coupon codes!

Went to dinner, then saw "The Producers," which was fun. Afterwards, they had a 90-minute cabaret, with people from theaters across town getting up and performing. The cabaret was the best part of the evening for me. The singers did everything from "The Grass Is Always Greener" and "Life Lines" to the version of "Beautiful City" that Laurie Beechman recorded. Some excellent singers out there.
