So, I am off to Toyland: I've got one dull score to bind, a vocal score to be
Elmore, what version of "The Good Companions" do you have?
Happy HHW anniversary to DR ChasSmith! Did you say something yesterday about an upcoming visit to Ohio?
I'm also not looking forward to seeing the new version of GATSBY. It looks way too CGI glitzy for my taste. What about it needs to be in 3D? The sweaters flying?

I have read the book now three times and love Fitzgerald's writing, but until I saw the movies, the story of the novel just wouldn't stick with me. I would remember the words more than what they were saying.
Maybe they should remake MY DINNER WITH ANDRE in 3-D.
::)
Thanks to all for the positive comments on the interview. Very nice to hear.....
DR DOUG R - I like Patrick Hamilton as well, the play was known as Angel Street on Broadway, and I am not sure why the title change.....but the script is titled Angel Street as well. I was reading that Hamilton was badly disfigured when he was struck by an automobile in 1932 although he continued to write.
He wrote the screenplay adaptation of his play ROPE for Alfred Hitchcock.

I thought Arthur Laurents wrote the screenplay for "Rope."
....
Well DR CHAS SMITH - anniversary boy - in August we will be doing THE DROWSY CHAPERONE and perhaps you and DR GINNY & Co can drive over....
And the word of the day is: FANFARON!
And the day continues bad: I'm finding melodic errors in the vocal lines and this means another proof, since the last one clearly wasn't successful, before we can print and this puts us back several days. Color me disgruntled.Better Day Vibes, Larry.
BK-
You Should Read THE GREAT GATSBY
BK-Amen.
You Should Read THE GREAT GATSBY
Hmmm.....I was quoting from a webpage about Patrick Hamilton and ROPE....but it looks as though he may have been contracted and did some writing, but that Laurents is credited with the screenplay. I haven't read AL's book in a long time, and I forget if he wrote about it.

In his biography of Patrick Hamilton “Through a Glass Darkly”, Nigel Jones goes into considerable detail about the screenplay of ROPE. In summary, he says that after agreeing to give Hitchcock the go-ahead to film it, Hamilton was himself asked to do the screenplay and he worked on a preliminary script treatment of ROPE for producer Sidney Bernstein at Elstree Studios in England in 1947. Hamilton wrote to his brother to say “Under my contract I can be called upon to do another six weeks – either here or in Hollywood – I hope to heaven here.”
Nigel Jones goes on to say that when Sidney Bernstein returned to Hollywood, Hamilton’s treatment was delivered into the hands of Hume Cronyn, who rewrote the plot, giving the Rupert Cadell character an anguished guilt over having led the murderers astray with his teachings of Nietzsche. Behind Cronyn’s back, Hitchcock brought in a third writer, Arthur Laurents, to write the film’s dialogue. Laurents handed his first draft to Hitchcock and when he came back to do the rewrite he found that Hitchcock had inserted some of the original play into the text and made other adjustments such as making the homosexual bond between the killers more explicit.
Hamilton disliked the finished film and felt that he had been bribed into getting involved by a mixture of assurances that his text would be adhered to and threats that if he did not take part, his script would be mangled by lesser writers.

Great story, especially to think that anyone could take an Arthur Laurents script and make it more gay.
Perhaps the story behind Rope is more interesting than the film itself. I like a lot of it, but, by the end, it always feels like it's more of an exercise, a demonstration of Hitchcock showing how good he is, than it is about entertaining the audience.

Jrand's interview was indeed nice.
Is tonight an opening night for DR CHAS SMITH and DR MATTHEW? Or have I mis-remembered....again.
In a couple of hours it will be exactly one year since I first logged into this JERNT.

In a way, it seems more like a couple of years! Can it really only be last June - ten months ago - that BK, DR Elmore, DR Ben, DR FJL, E&T DR Producer Julie, and some singin' gal named Sandy Bainum had our first get-together??

My son and I sat outside and watched the mockingbird feed the fledglings.

The babies are very loud. And the second after the parent drops the bug in that big open mouth, the baby starts crying again for more.
DR JANE!
I got very brave and let the barber in the building cut my hair. I have a pretty basic cut and he's been telling me for years he'd be glad to cut it. I just felt weird going to a barber, but he did a great job.
Mom and Dad were fine. Still having lots of senior moments, but as my mother likes to say, they don't have them at the same time very often
Today we had to close early on account of the weather. It's currently 74 degrees and sunny with hardly any wind. After our long winter, it was time to enjoy the weather a little

At half the cost?

I guess Wednesday will be back into the 40s, but until then, it's finally Spring

That is so pretty.
I actually had a cupcake tonight. My favorite cake is cheesecake (the creamy one). But it wasn't really possible to bring one to the restaurant.
And my sister's friend decorates cakes. And she has her made her some caramel/with cream cheese frosting cupcakes for her birthday last month. Well my sister had frozen them. So we ate them tonight. :)
Thank you DR Jane.
I am so looking forward being able to bike. I desperately need it.
Thank you DR Jane.
You are welcome. Where did you go for dinner this year?
The "almost all" was LINCOLN. I thought the sets and the costumes were wonderful. I thought the acting by Mr. Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, and especially Sally Field was fantastic. A pity the producers didn't put Ms Field up in the Best Actress category instead of Supporting Actress. I think she might have beaten Jennifer Lawrence. Watching the movie, which moves very quickly, the one question I had was "Why?" What was the point of the movie? Admiring the
acting, the costumes, and the sets was great, but it had no real purpose. I
felt no better or no worse having seen the film. I don't know, it seemed as
much a film about emancipation as it was about Lincoln. Thank you Mr. Speilberg for a History Channel special
The two "partial films" I saw; one was an old friend and one was a discovered
treasure. The old friend was APOLLO 13. I can't believe how caught up I get
watching that movie. Even knowing how it ends, I still hold my breath wondering
if they will make it. Another movie with a great cast of actors from Tom Hanks
to Gary Sinese.
And the discovered treasure, but probably only a discovery to me, was a film
entitled BIG FISH. I couldn't really describe it, nor would I want to try, but
if you get a chance to see the film, go for it. Albert Finney in his most
American role. A touching little film.

Big Fish, the musical, is trying out in Chicago. The reviews were quite encouraging.
Sounds like an enjoyable day at sea, TCB.

So, I guess everyone was watching "Carousel" on PBS tonight, right?

In other news, I am relieved and delighted to say these (now)-amazing high school kids pulled a great opening night of BARNUM out of their collective arse. There are many nits to pick, but it wasn't the disaster one would have fully expected after last night's debacle. And this place is no Calabasas. No, sir. But somehow, the spirit of the show was unleashed like a genie from a bottle -- for the first damned time -- and they even covered a few tech bloopers better than you could ever imagine.Good for them -- and you.
