Good morning, all! Once I got to sleep, I slept quite well. Getting there was not very easy: too much tsuris yesterday from the Man from Philadelphia and the leading man's manager, who finally responded after keeping me waiting for seven days. Much as I feel I've been very fortunate in much of my working life, some days I still hate what I do for a living.

So, I am off to Toyland: I've got one full score to bind, a vocal score to be compared with the full score before it goes to the printer, and some DEAREST ENEMY work to finish up.

What about it needs to be in 3D? The sweaters flying?

I have read the book now three times and love Fitzgerald's writing, but until I saw the movies, the story of the novel just wouldn't stick with me. I would remember the words more than what they were saying.

DR DOUG R - I like Patrick Hamilton as well, the play was known as Angel Street on Broadway, and I am not sure why the title change.....but the script is titled Angel Street as well.  I was reading that Hamilton was badly disfigured when he was struck by an automobile in 1932 although he continued to write.

He wrote the screenplay adaptation of his play ROPE for Alfred Hitchcock.

I thought Arthur Laurents wrote the screenplay for "Rope."

Greetings from Toyland! It took a hellish hour to get here, thanks to an "incident" at 96th Street. After one train, tightly packed, came by after a 6-minute wait, they announced that, because of the incident, all trains were running express from 96th to 72nd Street. This meant those of us on the platform at 86th and 79th Streets had to leave the station, and figure out what the hell next to do. I took the 79th Street bus to Central Park West, transferred to the B subway, and at 59th Street transferred to the MN7 bus, which dropped me off at my usual 28th Street subway stop.

Then, I learned my DEAREST ENEMY appointment was cancelled, so I could have stayed home!

DVD:

THE GREENGAGE SUMMER  Another film which I saw and liked when it was first released but haven't seen for many years. The DVD looks good but unfortunately Sony have presented it full screen - very obvious with so much empty space top and bottom.

LES BICHES (rental)  Having seen the strikingly attractive Jacqueline Sassard in ACCIDENT again recently I thought I'd check out this film by Claude Chabrol. I've seen many of his films but missed this one. Jacqueline Sassard had a short career and this was her last film. I read somewhere that she married someone very wealthy and gave up acting.

CD:

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK Alfred Newman's score nicely presented on the Real Gone Music label as per the original LP selections. I see that apart from being licensed from Universal Music it is also manufactured by Universal so presumably there's little likelihood of Fox being able to make the complete score available.

Yes, Jacqueline Sassard.  Just like Patricia Gozzi.  Those incredible young actresses appearing in those wonderful films of that era, who then stop and retreat into "normal" lives.  It's a crime, I tell you.

I was very pleased how much the 1974 movie followed the book of THE GREAT GATSBY.  I am not looking forward to the new film either, although I like Leo....  I shudder to think what the director will do to the material to make it so NOW and TODAY and HIP....all of which will date it quickly.

It seems as if every generation has to put its stamp on this work or that - and it immediately takes a timeless work and fastens it firmly in a contemporary frame....  Romeo + Juliet......

Hmmm.....I was quoting from a webpage about Patrick Hamilton and ROPE....but it looks as though he may have been contracted and did some writing, but that Laurents is credited with the screenplay.  I haven't read AL's book in a long time, and I forget if he wrote about it.

In his biography of Patrick Hamilton “Through a Glass Darkly”, Nigel Jones goes into considerable detail about the screenplay of ROPE. In summary, he says that after agreeing to give Hitchcock the go-ahead to film it, Hamilton was himself asked to do the screenplay and he worked on a preliminary script treatment of ROPE for producer Sidney Bernstein at Elstree Studios in England in 1947. Hamilton wrote to his brother to say “Under my contract I can be called upon to do another six weeks – either here or in Hollywood – I hope to heaven here.”

Nigel Jones goes on to say that when Sidney Bernstein returned to Hollywood, Hamilton’s treatment was delivered into the hands of Hume Cronyn, who rewrote the plot, giving the Rupert Cadell character an anguished guilt over having led the murderers astray with his teachings of Nietzsche. Behind Cronyn’s back, Hitchcock brought in a third writer, Arthur Laurents, to write the film’s dialogue. Laurents handed his first draft to Hitchcock and when he came back to do the rewrite he found that Hitchcock had inserted some of the original play into the text and made other adjustments such as making the homosexual bond between the killers more explicit.

Hamilton disliked the finished film and felt that he had been bribed into getting involved by a mixture of assurances that his text would be adhered to and threats that if he did not take part, his script would be mangled by lesser writers.

Great story, especially to think that anyone could take an Arthur Laurents script and make it more gay.

Perhaps the story behind Rope is more interesting than the film itself. I like a lot of it, but, by the end, it always feels like it's more of an exercise, a demonstration of Hitchcock showing how good he is, than it is about entertaining the audience.

Just saw on another label's website That they are releasing a new version of marry me a little. But what also caught my eye is the off-Broadway cast recording of John and Jen. They do not have a physical version of it, but you have to download it digitally. I also looked at the credits but guess what there is no credit for the producer! What are they afraid of?

The babies are very loud. And the second after the parent drops the bug in that big open mouth, the baby starts crying again for more.

The bus rides home were horrid: two young people, a couple for whom English was a second language, took up four bus seats with their fat asses and their bags and crap making it unpleasant on a crowded bus, so I transferred to a104, and had to deal with obnoxious kids and their apathetic parents or nannies who don't care that their little preciousnesses, all deserving to be made into rugs, don't sit srill, stop kicking and stepping on the passengers about them. Good thing I don't carry a gun.

TCB Ebert Lives

Over the last few days, I have seen almost one entire movie, most of two movies
and a segment of a third.  Not bad for a not very current film person.

The segment that I saw was of Le Miz.  I only watched part of it, because I am
hoping they might show it in the big theater on the ship, which is how I would
prefer to watch it.  I watched from Fontine having sold her hair has taken ill,
and Istopped watching after (I believe) "A Heart Full of Love."  What I  saw of
the film, I enjoyed;  if enjoyed is the correct word for Le Miz.  I don't quite
understand what the complaint so many people had with Russell Crowe's voice.  I
didn't have any problem with it.  It still not my favorite musical.  I love the
music, but there is too many damn stories to keep straight.  You need a score
card rather than a program.  Will I watch the entire film some day?  Maybe.

The "almost all" was LINCOLN.  I thought the sets and the costumes were wonderful.  I thought the acting  by Mr. Day Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones, and especially Sally Field was fantastic.  A pity the producers didn't put Ms Field up in the Best Actress category instead of  Supporting Actress.  I think she might have beaten Jennifer Lawrence.  Watching the movie, which moves very quickly, the one question I had was "Why?"  What was the point of the movie? Admiring the
acting, the costumes, and the sets was great, but it had no real purpose.  I
felt no better or no worse having seen the film.  I don't know, it seemed as
much a film about emancipation as it was about Lincoln.  Thank you Mr. Speilberg for a History Channel special

That is weird.  In my post reply spot, this post looks correct, but when I post it, it is spaced all funny.  Of course, the ship's computer is acting very strangely tonight

The two "partial films" I saw; one was an old friend and one was a discovered
treasure.  The old friend was APOLLO 13.  I can't believe how caught up I get
watching that movie.  Even knowing how it ends, I still hold my breath wondering
if they will make it.  Another movie with a great cast of actors from Tom Hanks
to Gary Sinese.

And the discovered treasure, but probably only a discovery to me, was a film
entitled BIG FISH.  I couldn't really describe it, nor would I want to try, but
if you get a  chance to see the film, go for it. Albert Finney in his most
American role.  A touching little film.

Big Fish, the musical, is trying out in Chicago. The reviews were quite encouraging.

BIG FISH on stage sounds strange enough, but I guess it would be terrific as a musical

Actually there have been enough histrionics on this cruise to make a good soap opera.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to the Humane Society garage sale.  No, they aren't selling things from the Humane Society, they are selling donated items FOR the Humane Society.  I'm guessing that there may be some good finds at that sale.  It's the first really nice weekend and the end of the month so I think I"ll drive around and look for garage sales.  They are always best at the end of the month...people moving who need to get things sold

In a way, it seems more like a couple of years!  Can it really only be last June - ten months ago - that BK, DR Elmore, DR Ben, DR FJL, E&T DR Producer Julie, and some singin' gal named Sandy Bainum had our first get-together??

I am so very glad that you came to join our family here!!

My son and I sat outside and watched the mockingbird feed the fledglings.

The babies are very loud. And the second after the parent drops the bug in that big open mouth, the baby starts crying again for more.

that is a GREAT photo!!!  Thank yiou Laura!

Oh HELL.  Which Carousel??

Couldn't have anyway, as I was playing a show.  But have I stopped into the Comcast office for a DVR?  I guess you can guess the answer to that one.

In other news, I am relieved and delighted to say these (now)-amazing high school kids pulled a great opening night of BARNUM out of their collective arse.  There are many nits to pick, but it wasn't the disaster one would have fully expected after last night's debacle.  And this place is no Calabasas.  No, sir.  But somehow, the spirit of the show was unleashed like a genie from a bottle -- for the first damned time -- and they even covered a few tech bloopers better than you could ever imagine.

I started listening to the French production of Sunday In The Park With George sung in English. I'm so used to hearing it sung by Americans (Broadway Cast) that the British cast is sometimes off putting.

It is available for listening for another month. So I will take my time. This show is really a visual delight so listening only to everything (dialogue included) can be a bit of a chore.
