Good morning, all! In another hour I must be out of here and into midtown where I will meet Joe Deer of the Wright State Musical Theatre Program in Dayton, OH.  Joe was a performer who performed as a dancer and actor professionally on Broadway and elsewhere and he was a featured dancer with Lee Becker Theodore's  American Dance Machine, a company I really miss. He has a project to discuss with me.

After that, I will head for Toyland to continue my proof of ROBERTA before we send it to hte printer.

Good morning, all.

Stayed up too late but got some pretty nice sleep.

Heading out in a while to the wonderful Lafayette Theatre in Suffern (Succotash), NY, for the first of their spring series of Saturday morning Big Screen Classics.  Today it is JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG in 35mm.

Where on Facebook, DR Jrand62?  Mind you, I know next to nothing about getting around on Facebook; I'm probably the most ignorant adult on the face of the planet when it comes to that.  But this isn't the first time someone has posted about something or other that I would "assume" is on some obvious (to me) page, and yet ..... it just isn't.

Saturday morning greetings!  Today I'm going to lunch at one local country club and dinner at another - la dee dah...

The luncheon is AAUW's April meeting and it's an author event with Dayton novelist Martha Moody.  We have about 50 reservations and it should be a nice affair.

The dinner is the gala banquet for the Middletown Historical Society.

Such a whirlwind...

Thanks for the birthday wishes DR TCB!

I am not sure if you will see this. But my personal problem with Russell Crowe in LES MIS (and I talked to a good friend who is obsessed with LES MIS and he thought the same thing) is that his voice just did not sound right.

I thought that Russell Crowe had a better singing voice than what I was expecting. And he acted the part well IMO. But he does not have the right voice for Javert. We are used to a certain powerful voice. And Russell Crowe was just distracting to me.

It was great to get a big name. And he was very capable of acting the role. Maybe if the movie wasn't sung through then it wouldn't have been such an issue.

I used  to like Subway...until I started being gluten free.  Now, all I can eat are their salads.

Applebee's is okay and, since there are no NY style deli's in Austin, I like Jason's.  Their corned beef is about as good as you are going to get here.

My favorite in the U.K. is Cafe Rouge - a French style chain.

I used to like the original Wimpy of decades ago when they served burgers with onions and toasted buns. Now superseded by the popularity of the awful (IMO) McDonalds.

I'm not a big fan of chain restaurants...places like Applebee's, O' Charley's, Outback, all sort of have the same level of mediocrity.  The only fast food chains I really regularly patronize are the Cincy chili/coney island places like Gold Star and Skyline.  I like places like the Cracker Barre and Bob Evans, because you can always get a nice breakfast at them.  And I'm fond of the Golden Corral as an all you can eat place.

Charles - I often visited the large Wimpy in Picadilly Circus - actually the one I visited had probably gone by the early eighties. I think it was the first Wimpy in London and the only one for a long time. After work on Saturday morning in the early '60s (my first job) I would go there and sit on one of the bar stools having a burger then go and see a movie. There are still a few Wimpy restaurants around but they are not much like the originals.

Of course being from Long Island we are big on Diners - nearly every town has one - and most of them are open 24 hours and run by Greeks - you can have anything from pancakes  and eggs to Surf and Turf at anytime of the day you wish

I was shocked when I went to Houston in 1972 with my Youth Group and there was not a diner to be found - and no one had a clue  as to what a  diner was -  we couldn't get bagels or rye bread either

Post by: George on April 27, 2013, 12:46:03 PM
Then tomorrow, we have our final performance of "Reservoir Dogs" and strike.  Fortunately, that will go quite easily.  The only set pieces are a couple of boxes and a ramp and a door.  The hardest part will be having to clean up all the fake blood from under the ramp, and then we have to paint the walls of the space black.  We painted the very small theater a kind of grey and we have to get it back to its original color.  Then, cast party!

So, have a great weekend, all!

Her first 3 are kind of "chick" books - very character-driven and relationship-oriented.  Her newest, which I bought today, is futuristic, set in Dayton.  One of the characters is a history professor who delivers a lot of historical background.  My book group liked her first, BEST FRIENDS, very much.

I'm really short on time now so I'll have to put mine off till late tonight, after the show -- but I won't forget.

I've been watching LES MIS. So far the only performance that has impressed me has been the young Cosette. I have seen nothing I feel is Oscar-worthy. I will say, though, that Helena Bonham Carter makes a great witch.
I was very impressed with the guy who played Marius. And re: Hugh Jackman other than the fact that he is a big name I see little comparison between him and Russell Crowe. Hugh Jackman is a broadway performer with an amazing voice.
Except that the score wasn't in his vocal range.

Back from the author luncheon, which was a huge success!  Martha Moody was a very good speaker and responded well to some great questions.  There was a good mix of AAUW members and non (but prospective) members.  The meal at country club #1 was quite mediocre.

Shame about the meal but nice the speaker was good.  Do you recommend reading any of her books?

Her first 3 are kind of "chick" books - very character-driven and relationship-oriented.  Her newest, which I bought today, is futuristic, set in Dayton.  One of the characters is a history professor who delivers a lot of historical background.  My book group liked her first, BEST FRIENDS, very much.

"Chick" books with the last one looking interesting was my impression of them.  Since BEST FRIENDS was available at my library I downloaded it.  Please let me know what you think of her latest book as it appealed to me.  So far my library doesn't have it on eBooks.

Keith decided to take a side trip to the little town of Ruidoso in the mountains, out of the desert, which he knew to be near the area where Billy the Kid became famous.  He also wanted a Billy the Kid t-shirt which could not be found in Ruidoso.  It was suggested we go to Lincoln, about half an hour away.

When our morning began we had no idea how interesting the day would be.  Our regret is that we didn't spend the previous night in Ruidoso allowing us the entire morning to explore the area rich with history.

Yes, Keith found a great shirt in Lincoln where we also learned about the War there and the truth about Billy the Kid.  Such a sad story.

To the Three J's (Jennifer, Jeanne, and John;

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.  I enjoyed Jackman, Crowe, and Hathaway.  I did not like Marius.  But since I consider the property a very small ripple in the cinematic ocean; there is very little reason to argue about the film.

Probably not. I thought many of the actors were very good. But IMO probably not so exceptional that they should get Oscars.  I think for Marius he just had the perfect look, acting, and voice for the character.

I don't know that they would have gotten it made without the stars.  I was okay with people like Hugh Jackman or Amanda Seyfried. Because I thought they could at least sing and act their roles.

DR TCB have you seen LES MIS often on stage?  I think for people who have seen it on stage a few times they are more used to the voice/sound/look of the guy who played Marius in the movie vs Russell Crowe's Javert. I think if I had never seen the show then I would have had the opposite reaction (liking Crowe more).

TOD

National:
PANERA BREAD
IHOP - breakfast only
CRACKER BARREL - breakfast only
RED LOBSTER - prefer this over most other family-type chains; prefer the old kitschy decor to the current upscale-ish bland look

U.S. regional:
STEAK & SHAKE
BOB EVANS and PERKINS - breakfast only
WAFFLE HOUSE
WHITE CASTLE
BIG BOY (Bob's, Frisch's, etc.)

More local regional:
(Cincinnati):  SYKLINE and GOLD STAR.  Never had them frequently enough to cultivate a preference.
(NYC-centric):  SHAKE SHACK.  Various NJ/NY/New England diners that aren't really a chain, but they're all very much alike.
(L.A. - Oy! where to begin?):  DU-PARS, MARIE CALLENDER'S, TOMMY'S, ASTRO BURGER, probably many many more.
PEA SOUP ANDERSEN'S - at least it used to be a chain.  I'm forgetting a LOT here.
(Philadelphia):  Don't recall the names, but several CHEESE STEAK places.

I highly recommend the Carousel on pbs.org with the New York Philharmonic. The music sounds so beautiful coming from that large an orchestra and the girl who plays Louise, someone named Tiler Peck, is amazing as both actress and dancer during her big ballet scene.

I missed the Camelot they did a few years back but seeing Nathan Gunn in this made me sorry I missed that earlier performance.

Back from the second opening night.  A play about Lorenz Hart, featuring the songs of Rodgers and Hart.  A strange hybrid that doesn't really work, IMO - the actors were good, the direction a little lax for my taste, and some playwriting problems definitely need to be addressed. I'll be nice in the notes because it's a brand new work and I know a lot of the folks involved.  This type of show is just not really my cuppa.

Then, I need to get myself back to The Midnight Sun where we'll have tonight's two performances of "Reservoir Dogs."

The men's final show tonight was great!  It was sold out!  Actually, we added eight, count 'em, EIGHT seats because of all the demand.  The grandfather of one of the actors got there just a bit too late and had to be turned away.  He was not amused.  The show itself was their best performance.  A great time was had by all!

Many PBS videos are available from their site for streaming. So nice not to have to bother recording them! When they're no longer available from PBS they usually go to Netflix.

And that is what I hate about streaming...they're never available for very long.  I prefer the option of purchasing an actual physical DVD/Blu-ray/CD and be able to keep it for as long as it lasts.
