Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not too happy with Time Warner, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently off-line and need a new MOOdem.

Last night (actually, just a few hours ago), I had a union meetin'.  We got some things discussed and questions answered.  We're gearing up for negotiations later in the year.  This year, the whole contract is up for negotiations.  We have some issues that we want to bring up and, hopefully, the management won't just say no.  They're called "negotiations" for a reason. :)

Well, it's a good thing I posted when I did - because guess what - we went down again.  I called Time Warner and had to hear a chipper recorded voice tell me that happily the outage had been fixed.  Oops.  Guess not.  I got a specialist on the phone again, she had me do the usual pointless stuff, told me it all looked fine on her end, but of course it wasn't - so she went ahead and reported it again - now it's back up, but who knows for how long.  Tomorrow or Sunday I go to the AT&T store and discuss UVerse with them, because I can't deal with this crap anymore.

An early "trend" in the movies.

At least we're told it's a not a musical and two characters might be "gay", but I don't think that word is ever used.

More later.

At first I was thinking that DR Jane was saying that her library told her an ebook was available but when she went to download it she couldn't. Now I understand what she did mean.  It was a book on her wishlist that she hadn't yet reserved. But still it was fast. Well now you can reserve it right and be second?

My niece (who will be 4 this Friday) blabbed my sister's Mother's Day present to her. It was pretty funny. I guess don't tell her anything you don't want everyone else to know. :)

Also, I had her make 4 cards yesterday (a Mother's day for my sister, a Mother's Day for my mom, a birthday card for my aunt whose birthday is today, and a birthday card for my brother-in-law's aunt whose party is today). So we showed my sister 3 cards and so my niece says "but I made 4 cards".   I had told her the 4th card was a secret. But I guess she doesn't quite get it yet. :)

My shoulder is a little sore this morning but it's fine. I knew it was going to hurt when I was lifting my niece at the park. But she wanted to do those things (monkey bars and fireman's pole) so badly. I couldn't refuse.

re: DR Jane's funny comment last night about losing weight by going to restaurants you don't like.

It's funny but I can't imagine eating out/taking out so much while trying to lose weight. I guess if you are doing it purely by calories then a lot of places now are listing those (so that part is good).

But here they don't do that (list calories). And most foods could have anything in them making them more fattening.

I feel like if I make the food myself then I know exactly what I am putting in it. And I can eat more fruits and vegetables and cook them how I like.

I can't put a hold on it without removing something from that list.  I only get 6 holds at a time which is why I check my wish list once or twice a day.

A restaurant in New Mexico listed all the calories which frustrated Keith.  He would have preferred not to know & hesitated to order what he really wanted.  I on the other hand was oblivious to the fact a calorie count had been provided.

Here is the kind of customer that just makes you scratch your head.  I received an e-mail filled with CAPS about how this guy had ordered Leave Her to Heaven and HADN'T RECEIVED ANY CONFIRMATION of the order (we don't do those - paypal tells you "you've made a payment"), and hadn't received a shipping notice (we don't do those), and hadn't received the disc.  So I told him we'd check his tracking information on Monday, since the discs had shipped over a week ago and should have reached him.

He then wrote back and said he hadn't actually ordered from us.  Now, I don't know about you, dear readers, but doesn't that just make you wonder about someone's sanity?  But the capper is - he DID order from us because I'd already seen his invoice - I checked again just to make sure and saw that he'd actually ordered late - May 3rd, so his order probably didn't ship till the 5th or so, so while it's taking a while to get cross-country, it really hasn't been that long.

I am heading out for the evening: dinner with Bruce Pomahac, then the Playwrights Horizon production of FAR FROM HEAVEN (?) by the GREY GARDENS team. Since I detest the orchestrator, who once royally screwed me over on a job, I'm sure I'll dislike his work as much as I loathe him personally. I haven't seen the film it's based on, so I have no idea of what to expect.

Back from THE VIKINGS (which was very enjoyable) and from running a bunch of errands in some mightily torrential rains.  Well, we've most definitely needed the rain.

In today's news, I have been gifted with some form of frickin' MALWARE!

This one turns a couple of random words or phrases on any given web page into ad links.  Isn't that nice of it?  Example:  On my screen, the word "errands" in my previous post is blue and underscored, and hovering the pointer over it shows three items and prices -- just innocuous stuff, but oh my, how it wants me to click on it.

This, on a three-month-old computer, and I am an especially scrupulous person when it comes to not clicking on crap or going to questionable websites.  Well, have to fix it.  I suppose I'll be downloading Malwarebytes or whatever that's called.  It did the job fine for me on some problem or other a few years back.

Back from some bacon and eggs and picking up a couple of packages.  Guess what?  The Internet was down - don't know how long, but it just came back up as I was dialing Time Warner.

More frustrating Time Warner calls - down, up, down, up - never their fault - supervisors are in a meeting but will call me back (sure they will) - it has to be my modem so a technician will be here Monday between three and four and he will tell me there's nothing wrong with my modem and that outages were being experienced all weekend.  I will call billing and tell them I am done unless they give me a full month's credit for the aggravation and obvious lies.

This is no consolation whatever, but I have been through exactly that kind of horribly aggravating situation with Comcast.  It's just inexplicable, how there seemingly aren't ways for them to positively identify exactly where this kind of problem actually resides.

Sounds like he would fit right in as a regular at this site.

At first I was thinking that DR Jane was saying that her library told her an ebook was available but when she went to download it she couldn't. Now I understand what she did mean.  It was a book on her wishlist that she hadn't yet reserved. But still it was fast. Well now you can reserve it right and be second?

I can't put a hold on it without removing something from that list.  I only get 6 holds at a time which is why I check my wish list once or twice a day.

So even if you are number 10 you can only reserve 6 ebooks at a time? Even if you won't be getting that ebook for a while? That seems odd. Can Keith get a library account and get 6 holds too?

Cute.

Oh she also blabbed what the gift was. After all our hard work to make it a surprise. Oh well. It is partially my fault because I showed her on tv what they were getting my sister.  But only after my older niece had told her what they were getting her. But I probably refreshed her memory and made it visual for her by showing it to her. But apparently my dad had sort of accidently blabbed what the gift was already too. :)

My shoulder is a little sore this morning but it's fine. I knew it was going to hurt when I was lifting my niece at the park. But she wanted to do those things (monkey bars and fireman's pole) so badly. I couldn't refuse.

Of course not.  Just a little sore isn't too bad.  I expect you are relieved it isn't worse.

It's actually perfect now but was sore after I took a nap. I think sometimes the way I sleep makes it sore. I was careful not to lie on it. But I still often wake up in pain. But it goes away.

re: DR Jane's funny comment last night about losing weight by going to restaurants you don't like.

A restaurant in New Mexico listed all the calories which frustrated Keith.  He would have preferred not to know & hesitated to order what he really wanted.  I on the other hand was oblivious to the fact a calorie count had been provided.

I think a calorie count in the back would be excellent. So those who want to know can know. But those who don't want to know don't have to look. I know my sister mentioned being upset when she was in Vermont because the stuff she wanted to eat had so many calories. And looking at the calorie count made her unable to order what she wanted.

What a great idea.  If I find I don't have enough books to read I'll do this.  Currently when I run out of books I purchase something the library doesn't carry.  Sadly there are too many books like this on my Barnes and Noble wish list.   I also browse the library for available books and have found a few gems this way.

And I am home from one of the most irritating shows I've ever seen, FAR FROM HEAVEN: good cast, meandering sorta music, sometimes good tunes in search of a song, but more often a string of notes hoping to become something. Then there's the plot based on a Todd Haynes "I hate suburbia and the upper middle class" film, but we've known since "Auntie Mame" that Connecticut for rich white WASPs is a trap of bigotry, antisemitism, snobs, and creeps, so what else is new, Mr Haynes? Kelli O'Hara's perfect life is destroyed by her husband's being gay and her unrequited friendship/relationship with a black man. It's all rather civilized, kinda boring, and completely eventless: nothing much happens and I hated most of the characters.  It's the epitome of a "why do this?" musical.

Ms O'Hara, by the way, is quite wonderful, as is most of the cast.

Interesting notes on Far From Heaven, Elmore. I loved Julianne Moore in the movie, but I felt the movie was a museum piece attempt to make a Douglas Sirk weepie. The musical has been talked about for years now, and I never could understand what about the story sings.

2.5 hours of my life I'll never get back. And the musical isn't even a weepie; it's far too boring.  It's the theatrical equivalent of watching paint dry.

Far From Heaven is a totally idiotic idea for a musical - just like most of these musicals today are - everyone thinks that as long as its a recent film that it should be a musical.  Hoping this trend finally passes after enough of them flop, but it probably won't.

The musical equivalent of watching paint dry. Well, I think I've experienced that before. Listening to "Martin Guerre" was kinda like that.

Interesting notes on Far From Heaven, Elmore. I loved Julianne Moore in the movie, but I felt the movie was a museum piece attempt to make a Douglas Sirk weepie. The musical has been talked about for years now, and I never could understand what about the story sings.

I am still waiting for WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF - THE MUSICAL!!

"Oh, Martha, Martha
Get me another drink. ..."

It could fit any moment of the show.

2.5 hours of my life I'll never get back. And the musical isn't even a weepie; it's far too boring.  It's the theatrical equivalent of watching paint dry.

But did it get a standing ovation?

What was this for, I wonder?

If George and Ira had been George and Martha instead:

DYSFUNCTIONAL YOU
tune of EMBRACEABLE YOU

(VIRGINIA WOOLF tiny spoiler)

Don’t junk me
My sweet dysfunctional you
Don’t punk me
My non-compunction-al you

Just one sip of gin
Has got you swinging at me
When the guests came in
Your taunts came flinging at me

I love all the many ills about you
Above all, they made some pills about you

Don’t talk about that baby
Come to Martha, come to Martha, do
My sweet dysfunctional you!

My friend Sharry and her husband are in San Fran this weekend seeing Jason Graae in LITTLE ME.  What a great role for Jason.

They mention that there have been some attempts, but none have ben able to do it:

The "Apple Annie" story transformed into Capra's Lady For A Day (and Pocketful of Miracles) has long been considered a natural source for a stage musical and a number of prominent writers, including Jerry Herman, David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr; the team of John Kander and Fred Ebb have all worked on unfinished and unrealized adaptations

I was at a B&N today and almost bought COLONEL BLIMP, but decided to hold my water until the next Criterion sale.

"hold my water"?

Is that a real phrase?  Do people say that?  Well, I just did.
