Title: TOO EARLY BLUES
Post by: bk on May 14, 2013, 11:57:25 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the too early blues and the not too early greens, and now it is time for you to post until the too early cows come home.

And the new Kritzerland release is one that's been in the works for over five months - it's finally here and it is gloriously glorious.  Order without fear.

Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack CD release:

TOO LATE BLUES

Music Composed by David Raksin

Too Late Blues (1962) is certainly one of the greatest films ever made about the jazz world.  Despite being a studio movie and being scripted, it feels like jazz, like an improvisation.  Given the maverick nature of John Cassavetes and the rawness of his first film, Shadows, it was truly bold of Paramount Pictures to hand the reins of a big studio production to someone like Cassavetes.  But that’s exactly what happened with Too Late Blues.   It was a perfect match between subject matter and filmmaker.  In 1959, Cassavetes had starred in a TV series called Johnny Staccato, playing a jazzman who moonlights as a detective.

Too Late Blues is a beautifully made film, with great performances and gorgeous black-and-white photography, and a score to die for, by the great David Raksin.  There is a lot of jazz in Too Late Blues.  The easy way out would have been to do standards, but Raksin wrote all original music for the film, even for the source cues.  And what music it is – Raksin at his best, and Raksin at his best is as good as it gets.  It didn’t hurt that he was working with some of the best West Coast jazz players of that era, including Red Mitchell, Benny Carter, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles, Milt Bernhart, and the best studio musicians anyone could hope for – including the amazing trumpet player Uan Rasey.

Raksin wrote one of his most exquisite and inspired themes for the film, which he titled “A Song After Sundown.”  It’s heard in jazz guises, within the dramatic score, and even as a vocalise performed by Stella Stevens’ character.  It’s a haunting, melancholy theme filled with sadness and yearning – classic Raksin, as are the jazz cues and the dramatic score.  It’s all of a piece – absolute perfection in the picture and wonderful to listen to outside the film as well.

This is the world-premiere release of Too Late Blues.  We had access to the scoring session masters and the original prerecords done for the “live” playing in the film.  The latter were all recorded in one-track mono, while the score cues and some of the source cues were recorded in three-track stereo.  Given how the music functions in the film (the first dramatic score cue occurs over an hour into the film), we took a different approach in sequencing the album, trying for an optimal listening experience rather than strict film order – which would have given an hour of jazz cues before the first score cue.  We have included all the music written for the film – first the film cues, and then a bonus section filled with alternates and various odds and ends, over seventy-six minutes of prime David Raksin.

Too Late Blues is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the final week of June, but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all! I have a free day, so I stayed up late reading this new centennial biography of Benjamin Britten by Paul Kildea, which is quite wonderful since he can do something that Merle Secrist and that horror Joan Peyser cannot: discuss their compositions intelligently as music and their relationship to events and times in the life and give an impartial and honest account of a life without having to invent villains or impose personal prejudices or ignorance.

Today, I plan to hang out around the apartment, run a few errands, work on DEAREST ENEMY liner notes, and laze about.

DR ChasSmith, have fun on your brief trip! I used to love Perkins, but I don't recall being in one since around 1978!

More coffee!

Good morning, all.

Writing this from the airport. I've already taken the bird to the Tweet Suites for his vacation, finished packing and did some housecleaning before getting here. I hope to sleep on the plane since I didn't sleep last night, but if not, I have a couple of books that can do the trick.

It's the mystery number, for sure.  A short clip of the number can also be seen in the trailer.  Unfortunately, I think the outtake must have been lost in the 1970s George Eastman House fire where a number of Fox's technicolor nitrates and outtakes were stored.  This would most certainly have been a natural to have been added to previous video releases of the film...or at least in one of the two videos of Fox musical outtakes that were issued.

At last I've got the Blu-ray Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection - it was available at half the original price. VERTIGO, my favorite Hitchcock film looks wonderful. I used to think that the picture quality of the HD Sky TV broadcast was very good but in comparison I see that it was awful! On the other hand I thought MARNIE looked better on TV - at least it didn't have what appear to be swarms of mosquitoes flying over the picture.

Well, go know!  I Googled "number cut from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'" and found, among other things, THIS article (http://blamemameblog.blogspot.com/2011/12/film-gentlemen-prefer-blondess-lost.html) explaining what the number was supposed to be.

I am "guessing" that it no longer exists in any viewable/audio form.

DR Jrand, I really, really hope your family looks just like this...and that is a sweet name for your family's band, don't you think?

Hi everyone.

So, Miss Saigon closed and was the highest box office gross-er in a LONG time.  Sold out houses, standing O's, just a great show.  Everyone was happy.

Moving commences next week with the big items on Saturday of Memorial day weekend.

I just got out of a phone discussion about the possibility of my being a guest lecturer on musical theatre next year for a college term. I'm very interested, whether or not the foundation I'm working with folds. I could still edit music and teach a term.

Sounds great, DR elmore!

Did a three-mile jog, came home and sent more music to singers (all is done now save for one song, and, of course sending the stuff to whoever our new guy is), then had some pasta papa, and then went to the mail place, where I was rather shocked to find that the books had been delivered the day after they were sent!  So, we'll ship out tomorrow - although the computer we use for shipping has been having problems and is at the store getting cleaned or whatever they do to it - but even if we have to address them by hand, we will get them out tomorrow.

Forgot to mention that my darling neighbors (yes, the Annette daughter) are doing more work and so had every parking spot taken in front of their house AND mine.  I went ballistic because I had six heavy boxes of books to carry in - I screamed at the workers and told them to move their damn cars elsewhere.  They nodded and did nothing, so I got louder - and the head guy looked at me and said, "I can't right now, I'm busy."  That was it.  I parked in the red in front of their house, and then went to the front door and banged until their housekeeper (yes, now they have a housekeeper - I'm sure mommy left them some money - how nice for them) opened and told me Annette's daughter wasn't in.  I let forth with a loud stream of invective that I was not standing for this parking crap anymore.  She said she'd tell her.  Meanwhile, the idiot head worker saw I was at their door and he beat it over to his SUV and left.  As he was starting his motor I yelled to him that I'd best not see his car in front of my house again.  These little selfish mofos are going to rue the day if they keep this up.

Oh well you read quickly.

I did something so stupid (for me). There is a sequel that I have been wanting to read since the first book came out. The second book came out in April. I have been checking my library every few days waiting to see when it would come in.

And then today 4 books from may 7th came in for me. So I went back and checked my list and it turns out I never suggested/requested the book I've been wanting. :(

Oh well, now I have 6 library books. Good thing that nobody has reserved the four I got today. So I can renew some of them.

I was wondering about this as well. Why not just pull up into your driveway?  I'm sure it must be super annoying to have all the parking spots in front of your house gone. but why do you need one of them? I would never park in the street if I had a driveway.

So, all the "notes" have been migrated successfully to something called Wordpress.  That's a different thing than Moveable Type, which is what we've always used and what I'm used to - I'm not sure why they did this, unless our software was so old that they couldn't migrate using Moveable Type itself.  But I hate the look of Wordpress right now, but as long as Doug's design is similar to what we have, then it will look as its always looked, albeit with a fresh design.  In other words, I refuse to have it look like anyone else's "blog."  Then they'll have to show me or talk me through what I type (or cut and paste) the notes into and that has to behave exactly as the Moveable Type form did - although I gather Wordpress has all the latest and greatest in terms of video and audio linking, etc.  We'll see what Doug comes up with, but at least they got everything archived and protected.

Tomorrow the same thing happens with our discussion board.

I'm getting very sleepy.  That 106 degree day yesterday really took a lot out of me.  It's back to normal today.  Just one freaky day

106?!   Wasn;t it just snowing last week?

Yup.  Frost on Saturday night and 106 on Tuesday.  Between 11 and 12 noon the temperature rose 14 degrees.  It was really strange. The low last night got down to 55 and it's back to normal today.  Really strange

goodness gracious ! Iowa sounds like the poster child for Global Climate change!

It's lovely tonight.  I've got the windows open and there's a nice cool breeze

vixmom, the ghost site is a clone of both the hainehisway.com site and this board - anything we do there doesn't impact the regular site - so we can play, make sure if everything works, find out what the new features of the latest board software are and all that jazz.

Found one of my old boyfriends on Facebook. For someone who helped himself to my credit cards (without my knowledge or ok) to buy pay-per-view football games and tires for his car, way back when we were together (and never paid me back after I found out), he has certainley turned into a conservative moralist.

Pay-per-view football games?

I have live county music at my house today.

Because?

Because Jack is a conservative moralist?

It just happens DR ELMORE when you live in a family of musicians.  It could be worse.....they could play heavy metal or punk.....

The Macbeths play bluegrass. Lady M is a legend in her own mind; to all their ex band members, she's a total egocentric control bitch.

And she is the nicer of the two?

Books will definitely ship tomorrow - I signed them all this evening and the helper came by and has them and the little gift things.

Hmmm... we just set a record in Iowa.  356 consecutive days with no reported tornadoes.  Interesting

After tonight, I guess Dallas / Ft Worth can't say that.

I guess if it doesn't arrive in the next two weeks, then I can assume I never ordered it.

Do you still need/want testers?
