And where is DR Kerry? They are different people aren't they?

I just paid all of my bills...I wrote checks for two and all the others are paid on-line!  And I just checked my bank account (also on-line) and the direct deposit of my paycheck was deposited directly into my checking account!  For as long as I've had direct deposit, I'm still amazed (and incredibly grateful) that the money is deposited the night before we're actually supposed to get paid...that way the checks that I wrote on Wednesday will be covered if they come through today (Friday). ;)

Good morning, all!  I've been mostly lurking this week, most of my attention has been on the convention, and I had a great time listening to the speakers and the commentary.

My back has moments when I think it's improving, and long periods of pain during which I fear it will never heal.   I have another week of ibuprofen, muscle relaxant, and some penicillin-based drug before I see my doctor again, so hopefully this week will see some sort of stabilization.

I spent an interesting couple of hours at the NY Public Library Music Collection yesterday looking at original Broadway materials on WHERE'S CHARLEY? and I found a few lyrics not in the show.  I've always suspected that some of the awkward lyrics in the published vocal score were errors of Mathilde Pincus and Don Walker in 1954 when MTI assembled the show for rental purposes.  Unfortunately, I could find no lyric solution in the materials I was examining.

I have to get on my soapbox, too, and state that the NYPL doesn't offer the freedom of examining  cartons of files that the Library of Congress does, and to check out 10-15 folders of various manuscripts in the storage box means a constant trip to the Special Collections desk.  The librarian at the desk yesterday, who is usually an amiable man, appeared to be stretched to his limit.  I did a cursory check and left, so I will go back next week and continue my search.  The Library of Congress, in the research I've done, usually hands me one storage carton at a time, so that I can take all the files in the carton to a table and examine everything at my liesure.  And this, DRs, is why all of my ms are with the Library of Congress.

Good morning Tom, Michael and Larry.

I will be listening to City of Angels (OBC), 110 in the Shade (OBC) and Sugar (OBC) this morning. Not sure what I'll listen to in the afternoon, perhaps Friday Night is Music Night on BBC.

I had a presentation due yesterday and it went well so I actually slept last night. I tend to get obsessive about these things. Since Monday I have been working on the presentation and waking up at 4am (not by choice) unable to go back to sleep. It's now out of the (successful as I thought it would be) and I actually slept until 6am today. TGIF so I can sleep late tomorrow morning.

I will be alone this whole week. Anthony has clown shows on Saturday and Sunday and then next Saturday as well so he will be staying on Long Island for the entire week, not back in the city until August 9th. He has things to do during the week. He's making some radiator covers for the apartment and his father has a workroom w/all those sexy power tools. He's also finishing some sewing, curtains, a bed skirt and a cover to hide the TV tray tables. From power tools to sewing machines. What a jump.

I must resist going to Academy and Footlight. I must, I must, I must. I will go up to the Equity office and see if there are any free theatre tickets for the weekend. That will keep me busy!

From Yesterday

MORE gossips!!

(Excerpt from www.lancastereaglegazette.com by Hollie Saunders)
Roberts shares his life over coffee
Sitting around a table, sipping coffee is a good way to generate interesting conversation -- especially when it's with actor Tony Roberts.

Roberts played opposite Julie Andrews in "Victor/Victoria." He described her as one of the "true great ladies who lived beyond one's expectations."

"Julie is very kind and generous, and treated everyone the same. At the same time, she is very down to earth. She was poor and supported her family with her talent when she was young. She is a working woman," Roberts said. "(Julie's husband) Blake (Edwards) is the complete opposite. He wasn't well liked because he was a Hollywood director. He was arrogant in his approach (to stage directing), and they didn't like it."

He said Andrews declined the nomination for her role in the play because no one else was nominated, and said it was a slap in Blake's face.

As I was started to read I was treated to a mini Julie Andrews festival on Theayrically Challenged on Live365 one of the better "radio" programs on the system.

I do have a question though about the about article. In reference to Blake Edwards THEY DIDN"T LIKE IT was it the actors and creative personal who didn't like him or the critics?

Irvin Shortess "Shorty" Yeaworth Jr., who directed the 1958 cult movie "The Blob" and later made hundreds of films with religious and social messages, died in a car accident in the Middle East. He was 78.

Yeaworth was traveling in Jordan when his vehicle went off the road near Petra on July 19, his wife Jean Bruce Yeaworth said.

"We think he fell asleep," she said.

Yeaworth often struggled with his legacy as director of the camp sci-fi classic "The Blob," much of which was filmed in his backyard in Pennsylvania. "He was not very proud of it," his wife said.

The Miss America pageant is pulling the plug on its talent competition, eliminating the amateurish two-minute routines that have come to feature cheesy stunts such as tractor driving and trampoline jumping.

Instead, this year's crowning Sept. 18 will showcase some of the women performing in a videotaped montage culled from talent routines staged in preliminary competition.

Just one contestant chosen by the pageant's producers will perform live, after the selection of the five finalists for Miss America 2005. ABC-TV is trimming the telecast to two hours this year.

"It's the cornerstone of our organization. It's what sets us apart," said Miss America CEO Art McMaster. "If it were up to me, I'd show all 52 talents on TV. But when you're in a collaborative effort, as we are with ABC, there had to be a compromise somewhere

Well....having a talent competition begs the question that you have a talent to show.  I enjoyed watching the 1958 Miss America Contest earlier this year on TRIO.  Interesting "talent" segment, not all BAD, but not all that interesting either.

Well. I've made it to the end of my first week back at work since my arm-breaking fall two weeks ago today.

Some of you might be amazed to learn that my cast-like splint was removed Wednesday morning!  X-rays were taken and my doctor announced that things look good.  I was then given a removable hinged splint that was "set" to give me a restricted range of motion.  My challenge is to maximize my ability to operate within that range over the next three weeks after which a new goal will be set.  I can remove splint to allow cleansing/moisturizing/light massage and/or a good scratch!

It's all very new and aggressive to me!

My arm is swollen, very bruised and quite "sore."  When a day is done and I've done more than I ought in using it, it positively "aches."

VCR: Nada
DVD: Nada
CD: TONS of things. including the Bacharach recordings mentioned last week of which I've listened to only a selection or two on each CD.

Latest eBay acquisition:  Window card for "Funny Girl", featuring original cast listing.

These are, of course, subjective opinions, not facts, but I said Wildhorn and Eder are talentless for a few reasons:

Wildhorn, before he started writing for the theatre, was a fairly successful writer of pop songs.  In the theatre, pop songwriters (such as Rupert Holmes) are welcomed, as long as they move away from the cliches that make pop sell and dramatize characters and situations as has to happen in the theatre.

The three Wildhorn musicals lost more money on Broadway than the combined career Broadway output of any other writer.  The shows were set in Victorian England, the French Revolution, and the American Civil War.  And yet, for the most part, the scores were set firmly in the same century: late 20th.  (He also befouled the score of Victor/Victoria after Henry Mancini died... different setting, same old junk.)

All had lyrics that made me laugh out loud, not with them, but at them - howlingly funny without intending to.  One song keeps throwing different adjectives in front of the noun, "moment" and one of these adjectives is "momentous."  If a kid in a fourth grade writing class did that, he'd be sent back to third grade.

But wait, I hear you say, Wildhorn isn't responsible for the lyrics; he's the composer.  The hell he isn't!  When a good composer is handed a horrible cliche like "someone like you loves someone like me and suddenly nothing is the same" he sends his lyricist back to the drawing board.  I can't imagine Jule Styne accepting that line.

But each lyrical cliche is matched by a musical cliche, and such things are a little harder to explain.  (It's easy to point to a bad lyric.)  Take A New Life.  Please!

A new life
What I wouldn't give to have a gnu life
Better than a pig or kangaroo life
If I must be furry, set me free

OK, so that's not the lyric, but the tune keeps hitting the rhythm of the middle two lines incessantly, always leading to an ill-chosen rhyme.  It puts one to sleep.  Sometimes, the singer will combat the dullness of the compositional lines, by singing REALLY LOUD.

Which brings us to Linda Eder, who sings really loud.  And in a Streisandish mode.  What I concern myself with, most days, is making sure that musical theatre performers are living each moment, acting the hell out of their songs.  Eder is wholly unable to do this, which is why, perhaps, she's never been cast in anything her husband wasn't involved with.  It doesn't matter what she's singing (I am I, Don Quixote, the lord of La Mancha...) she merely sings it loudly.  No acting, no facial expression.  She's what my wife calls a park-and-bark.  She stands and bellows forth.

I'm not saying its an unattractive sound.  But when sound seems to have no thought behind it, it's boring.

Which brings up one more point about Wildhorn.   Sometimes, he puts so much time between phrases, you could drive a truck through them.

Tell my father that I'm dead (pause, pause)
And tell Fred (pause, pause)
Our chaffeur (pause, pause)
Tell my father that I cried (pause, pause)
As I died.

I know some people like that song, but I can't hear it without falling asleep.

RLP, no coseys they. The radiator covers will be wood w/a metal grate in the front (we need two, one for the living room and one for the bed room). We live in an old building w/those big old honker radiators that take up lots of space. Since my upstairs neighbor and my downstairs neighbor both LOVE  their heat in the winter we rarely turn the radiators on. It has to be really, really cold for us to use them so we will get more use out of them with well designed and functional covers at much less cost than any of the hardware stores in Manhattan would charge to make said covers. I'll try to remember to take pictures when they are finished and I'll post for all to see.

You have absolutely NO idea how discouraged and dismayed I am by this news.  Dear Partner John and I haev always been BIG Miss America fans (as is his father...), and the talent competition was always our second favorite portion of the evening (well, evening gowns still come first).  We were pissed off enough when they started only showing five talents instead of all ten, but this is just the end of the line.....!

How does the  Miss America pageant have 52 contestants?  I know I haven't been watching the news lately, but I thought there were still only 50 states.  Okay, so maybe Puerto Rico counts for 51, but how do they get to 52?  Was their a tie?

Growing up, my family and I used the watch the pageant religiously every year.  And for many of those years, we still had a black and white television so we would have to guess what colors the ladies were wearing.  When we got a color television it wasn't as much fun to watch any more.  Progress is the root of all evil.

All I can say about the decision to eliminate the talent portion of the pageant on television is that I'm glad my mom is no longer here to see this. It would have killed her. One of her most anticipated events of the year was watching and critiquing all of the talents on the show each year.

Everyone makes fun of the talent portion, but I can remember down through the years that she and I watched it together being electrified by some of the women, and not always the winners. If I was a regular watcher any more (I watched last year for the first time in deacdes since Clay Aiken appeared on the show to open it with "This Is the Night"), this would lose me as a viewer.

Thanks, diva.

Public domain films: When films passed whatever the amount of years of copyright protection they had, they went into the public domain unless the copyright was extended.  So, that's why there have been multiple DVDs and tapes of certain silent films, etc.  Then there are the cases where the studios have screwed up and not put a copyright notice anywhere in the body of their film, i.e. Charade, Till the Clouds Roll By, etc. and those films are in the Public Domain as well.  Where certain films have been able to be protected, ironically, is their music - although I don't believe any publishers have gone after these PD companies, on Till the Clouds Roll By they conceivably could because the composers music is protected and is under copyright.

Is Simon Cowell one of this year's judges for MA?

Ann,

When I babysat for crabby kids a zillion years ago, I'd get a friend to phone me. I'd tell the kids it was their mother/father, who said to cool it. This usually worked. On the other hand, two crabby brothers once reacted to this tactic by locking themselves in the bathroom (this was an apt. building, fifth floor) and threatening to jump out the window.

DVD Player:

Der Brucer and I watched Hellboy earlier this week.  Ron Perlman is clearly this generation's Lon Chaney, Jr., with his ability to act under a ton of prosthetics.

At the same time that we picked up Hellboy, we also picked up Starman, Cat Ballou, and The Tailor of Panama, all at a good discount price.  But last night I wasn't in the mood for any of them.

I slipped Fantasia 2000 into the player, instead.  I happen to like the film, and it's a good relaxation/decompression flick, to boot, and to flash back to an earlier TOD.

At some point, we've got to get me a new discman, so I can play music in my room without having to blast it through the entire house.  (That's what headphones are for.)  And getting one that has an adaptor we can plug into the car stereo would be nice, too.

For me too!  The talent portion was actually the only reason that I watched the Miss America pagent.  I shall watch no more. :(

In my CD player at work:  the original cast recording (produced by our very own BK):  The Irish...and how they got that way.

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."  I've taped all this week (special DNC coverage) and my parents want to watch it.

Good Afternoon!

-I, too, was a bit zonked after last night's rehearsal.  It was just a long day for me.  I headed out shortly after 9:00am to head back to the rehearsal studio to fetch my phone - which was, as I thought, sitting "in" the piano (I had closed the fall board/keyboard cover before removing my phone - out of sight, out of mind).  Then it was a short bus ride over to Highland and Santa Monica, and then a short few blocks walk to the Hudson.  I hung out while the piano tuner finished his tuning.  -And it's more like a mini-baby-brand piano size-wise, but it works nicely in the space and for the show.  Then I headed out and decided to explore and get some lunch.

I headed over to La Brea, and checked out the relatively new Target store there.  Very nice.  Actually, the whole complex, The West Hollywood Gateway, is very nice - a Best Buy, some restaurants, a Ben & Jerry's (yes, I had ice cream - and the scooper had to be one of the friendliest scoopers I've ever had), etc.  However, it was weird walking just a few feet past the complex down La Brea and seeing all the "industry" back there.  While at Target, I decided to "splurge" on a new portable CD player - $12.99!!!  I had forgotten to pack mine for the trip out here, and I figured for $12.99, what the hell?  I also needed a new portable cassette recorder.  That piece of equipment, however, was $25.00.  It's just strange how the "old" technology was priced higher than the "new".

Then it was back to theatre to get some practicing in on the new-to-me piano.  It feels good, and I can get some nice "colors" out of it.

The rehearsal went well.  It was a "typical" first night in the theatre rehearsal.  Just lots of new "stuff" to deal with - and still some old stuff to work through.

Once I got back to the apartment, I decompressed with "The Daily Show", and then headed to bed... And slept... and slept.  :)

I believe he meant that the Broadway people he got to work with didn't like his "Hollywood attitude" and that also reflected on the Tony voters' decision, but I can only rely on what the article excerpt says!

It might have been a Hollywood VERSUS Broadway thing! :(

Those in pain (Elmore and Ron) are exempt from such stimulation of course. (Unless it helps).

Last Cd played last night was a Beatles compilation - I was recording the songs "Girl" and "If I Fell".
I made a Bee Gees compilation for a friend the other day - some wonderful melodies but NEVER read those lyrics. I guess songs don't  need to make sense to be successful. I would prefer to leave my cake out in the rain.  Taste is such a personal issue.

CD - Lionel Bart's LA STRADA, Rodgers & Hart's EVER GREEN (2 words indicates the British stage version as opposed to the one word movie), 2 Merman LPs from the 60s newly released on one CD

DVD - Probably the original CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN/BELLES ON THEIR TOES

WHS - Nothing

Are you actuallly listening to Bart's score that he wrote or the one that appeared on Broadway with only about 4 of his songs and the rest written by the uncredited Martin Charnin and the musical director whose name escapes me at the moment I write this.

Okay I looked up La Strada. According to my notes: Only four songs written by Lionel Bart made it to the opening and closing night performance. !3 other songs by Bart were dropped along the way. 10 songs written by Martin Charnin and musical director Elliot Lawrence made it to the opening. Although they did write 7 others songs that did not.

A good deal of score was reused for The Optimists aka The Optimists of Nine Elms. has anyone seen this film from 1973 that starred Peter Sellers

Der Brucer and I had a very nice repast, traveling downtown to a restaurant called the Stoney Lonen.  It's supposed to have Irish references, and our waitress was indeed from Ireland.

We went because every Friday night they have a bargain: half-off on the fish and chips, and $2 Guiness.

We started with their soup of the day, lobster bisque with fresh crab meat.  The bisque itself was on the brothy side, but had a good flavor, and there was plenty of crab.

As for the fish and chips, the halibut was ale-battered and breaded nicely, crisp on the outside and very tender inside.  The chips, shoestring potatoes, were just right, not overdone (as can often happen).  This was served with a nice cup of cole slaw, not skimpy but enough to last through the meal.

Very enjoyable.

He had "bad blood" and was not welcome at the convent. I remember reading it in his "diary" Too bad the Tra La La days are over. And now I am probably just going off on a pop tangent that not even the kings of clowns on this site will follow. I''ll go play solitaire for a while..

Isn't the Duran Duran musical called "Hungry Like The Wolf"? I think Michael Crawford is to star. Sort of a gothic thriller! They are doing so well with the genre lately.

Maybe they can get Harvey Fierstein to play Rio.

Can't seem to clean up. I'm just moving things around from place to place. This calls for ice cream -- the one true source of energy (aside form chocolate). Perhaps CHOCOLATE ice cream. I shall attempt to put on some clothes and venture out for ice cream.

Panni have you thought about relaxing tonight and cleaning tomorrow? I would save the chocolate for the morning.  :)

Just curious:

Has Harvey Feinstein changed the spelling of his name lately?
It's not divine to me!

Mmmm... Ice cream! Good idea, Panni. I myself am eating a carton of Ben & Jerry's Karamel Sutra. It's yummy!

I have so much furniture in my room right now and it doesn't all fit. I have a futon/bunkbed, a dresser, a bureau, a nightstand, four end tables, a desk, four chairs, and two bookshelves. I've been trying to make it all fit so that you don't have to climb over something to get through the door. It's like a really big version of that game where you move those tiles around to make a picture and there's only one empty space.

Yes, DR Francois, there was some talk about Broadway's Lost Treasures here some weeks ago. William E. Lurie, I believe, posted the rundown of the next installment, and while I'm grateful to have ANYTHING, regretted that the powers that be still can't seem to procure rights to the clips from DREAMGIRLS, I DO! I DO!, A CHORUS LINE, PURLIE, and COCO, among others.

Commercial world, dear reader Matt, commercial world!

I think seeing Katharine Hepburn in her only musical would or should be commercial. So would CHORUS LINE and DREAMGIRLS, iwo of Broadway's all-time hits. Mary Martin was one of the first ladies of musical theater and whose name still should mean something to the people for whom this video program is intended. And PURLIE features the electrifying opening number and the unforgettable "I Got Love."

I know, Lansbury and Orbach are still around and can publicize the video, but I think the numbers named are every bit as commercial as "We'll Take a Glass Together" (which I LOVE, BTW, as it features the amazing Jeter and HHW pin-up boy Brent Barrett.)

Talk about wanting to have it both ways!  If it's nudity, it really should be nudity.  If they're wearing briefs, then they ain't nude.  Producers will try to get away with anything these days.

For Mary Poppins and disney music fans!

Infos posted by HOPEMAX at www.magicmusic.net

"Hi, I normally just lurk, but I did attend the NFFC convention.  I'm not sure there is as much info about the DISNEYLAND set as you would like.  Randy Thornton spent a lot of time talking and playing snippets from Mary Poppins.  Here are what I have from my notes, I hope I haven't messed anything up too badly.  I wrote this for another Disney board, so some of the stuff I explain for them.

First, Randy started talking about the Wonderland Music Project.  If you visit the 20th century music shop, at Disneyland you will find some kiosks where you can order music.  Randy's goal is to get everything that was ever released on vinyl on those kiosks so you can get them on CD.  The covers on the CD's will look like the original album covers, the labels on the CD will look like the labels on the original albums, the original product numbers, etc.

Eventually, these kiosks will also be made available at WDW and hopefully the World of Disney stores.  The plan is to add approximately 5 titles per quarter, the kiosks opened with 50 titles.  The next two quarters will be light on park stuff because they focused on the Storytelling Albums, since they are are easier to produce, so Randy could focus on...

The Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary 2-Disc set.

They've been trying to get this project off the ground for 15 years.  And one day at work, when Randy was working in the tape room he came across a reel called "Mary Poppins pre-demo."  Mary Poppins, was Randy's high school band teacher's favorite movie, and he was the one who taught Randy how to edit and clean up tapes.  And if he could get a great MP soundtrack made, that would be kinda a way to say, "Thanks."  So when his bosses came by and asked what they should do, Randy said Mary Poppins.  The boss wasn't too sure, they had done a soundtrack before, hadn't done too well, (Randy said, of course not it was a bad vinyl pressing and the cover art made Julie Andrews look like a dancing girl) they would need to do something to make it special to get it approved by management.  Randy pulled out the pre-demo and said, "Does anyone know that this is here?"  No one did, including the Sherman Brothers.  So that became the impetus for the new project.

So they still had this stuff to work with.  And then one day, Randy was with Dick Sherman and Dick brought out 6 reels, 7 hours of tapes of the early story meetings with Walt, P.L. Travers, Dick & Bob Sherman and a few other top people.

On the second CD will have 41 minutes of these meetings.  All the songs that didn't make the film, like the compass sequence.  There is a 12 minute interview with Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, Sherman Bros and Irwin Kostal (arranger and conductor) done by the Hollywood Spotlight Microphone, the radio spots, the Sherman Brothers interview that did make it on the restored soundtrack, snippets from the orchestra sessions.  The first CD will have 26 new minutes of score added to the soundtrack.  The soundtrack now comes in at a total of 79 min 48 sec which gives them 12 sec to spare on the CD.  Definetely a jam-packed album.

A few tidbits:  Cherry Tree Lane is based on Mrs. Travers house, 90% of the whistling in the movie was done by Julie Andrews, Dick Sherman played the Kazuu in the Jolly Holiday sequence and Irwin Kostal did the softshoe sounds for the penguins.

Randy spent so much time playing tidbits from the album and chatting about Mary Poppins, that he ran quickly through the rest of his stuff.

Walt Disney Records will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.  It started because it occured to Roy O. Disney that they didn't need to have to work with some other label, "they should just do this ourselves."  They are writing a book on the history of Disneyland / Walt Disney Records.  And next April an retrospective exhibit of the history of Walt Disney records will be opening at Paul Allen's Experience Music Project in Seattle.

He talked only briefly about the CD set that will be coming out for DL's 50th birthday.  Bruce Gordon and Stacia Martin will be doing the booklet.  And that they did take some liberties with the material to "fluff it up."  Instead of just having the spiel for the Mark Twain, or an instrumental piece you might hear in the queue,  they layered the two together.  "So it didn't sound like school."
There's the six disc version and there will be a 2-disk version for the more casual listener.  It will be the same stuff as on the larger set, but snippets instead of full ride-thru.  Things I remember him mentioning:  the Barker Bird in Adventureland, a new HM ride-thru, Country Bears shows, CoP.  Silly me, I  thought I could remember everything and didn't take better notes."

Ya know, I don't think I've posted at all today.  Not sure how that happened!

I just got back from synagogue.  We had a special service this evening marking our Rabbi's tenth anniversary with the congregation.  It was a very nice service and now I feel spiritually recharged.

As they say in the South, Shabbat Shalom, y'all.
